Angola High School 1919

Today’s photo is split in half for possible closer viewing. When the photo is enlarged, we can read the words “Angola High School 1919” written on the blackboard. We wish we had the names of the students for you, but possibly there are some 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation relatives still living locally who may be able to provide some guidance. This photo was included in the donated box of items from Janet Walker to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society. Her dad, was John Walker (one time Mayor of Farnham) and her grandfather was Lee Walker (gateman for the railroad in the Village of Angola). The Walker family was well known in the Village of Farnham.

The Evans Democratic Club held their September meetings on 9/18/18 meeting at the VFW. Attorney Angela Marinucci appeared to discuss her plans for the Office of the County Clerk. 2018 is shaping up as the Year of the Woman for County elected office. In addition to Marinucci’s run for County Clerk, there are women candidates running for Erie County Court (Suzanne Maxwell Barnes), Family Court (Lisa Bloch Rodwin), and State Senate (Carima El-Behairy.). At the Town level, Moira “Molly” Cooper is unopposed in her bid for Evans Town Justice.

Richard Joseph Lezark, 71 of Evans passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. An USMC Vietnam veteran and a recipient of a Purple heart award, Rick was an electrician for 36 years at GM Tonawanda Powertrain. UAW Local 774. He dabbled in many hobbies, loved traveling with his wife and Corvette. He enjoyed coaching Hamburg Hawks youth hockey, and could never pass by a garage sale without stopping. He is survived by his wife Karen (nee Pfleuger); Sons Jason (Amy Cook), Jeffrey (Danielle); Grandchildren Abby and Garrett; Sister Lillian (Harold) Bright (nee Lezark); and many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews. Predeceased by siblings John, Shirley (George) Hansen; Beloved Husband, Brother, and Father. A patient Grandfather, Uncle and loyal friend, he will be missed by many. Friends gathered Sunday, Sept 16 at Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., Hamburg, NY. The back of today’s photo reads: “Ladies from Holy Cross Lutheran Church preparing for dinner at Schwert’s Hall”. The names listed are: Seated (L to R): Ida (Wasmund) Nordblum, Augusta Schwert, Clara Schrader, Lydia (Wasmund) Paul, Elizabeth Helwig-Betka. Standing (L to R): Mary Carbeck, ______, Marie (Paul) Sager, Matilda (Falk) Merow, Grace Berns, Irene Privettera. Familiar family names even in 2018! Schwert’s Hall is the present day Butlak residence at 513 Commercial Street, Farnham, N.Y. This beautiful brick building, built in 1902 was at one time a store …and there was a dance hall upstairs!

A Ladies Aid Society is mentioned in the Holy Cross 100 Year Anniversary booklet of 1964, as well as in a few written Farnham family histories we have come across in a our published history books. The Holy Cross booklet also mentions that “the [Ladies Aid] Society conducted dinners (on one occasion 625 chicken dinners were served), strawberry socials, fancy good sales, and other innumerable affairs, the proceeds used in the improvement of the church and parsonage.” We believe it is possible that these women pictured are also of this Ladies Aid group. We have not yet confirmed the year of this photo (even with the calendar on the back wall), but… we have a hint of the time frame because the pictured U.S Flag has 48 stars. The 48 star flag flew from July 4th, 1912 to July 3, 1949. That narrows it down some. (Ha!) Holy Cross Lutheran Church (also a beautiful brick structure) with a welcoming congregation, is located on Church Street in the Village of Farnham.

A few years back our historical theme was “Baseball” for the Brant Summer Festival display. Brant residents Sandy and Vince Fininzio Sr. submitted this photo for us to scan and use in our banner which was part of the display. The baseball team was sponsored by the Buffalo Evening News and was a hardball team which played their home games at the Brant Town Park. The photo year was 1968 or 1971. The George Hammond Farm

The handwritten notes on the front of this postcard read as follows: “I helped built this house in AD 1851, I bought it March 1857 and I sold it Sept.1860. W.W.H.” The back of postcard reads: “Oct 5,1913 Dear Great Uncle, Had a very pleasant trip home. The cold is better and hope uncle has recovered. This is the picture of Grandpa Hammond’s place at Brant that I told you Claude took last summer. With care, L[ester]” The card was addressed to “Mr. & Mrs. W. Hammond, 699 Lafayette Ave, Buffalo, N.Y.” This photo postcard was donated to the Brant-Historical Society by Brant resident Brian Rott in July 2014.

Mr. Robert Pfohl of Derby, N.Y. had provided our historical society with a photo copy ofApplication for the Society of Mayflower Descendants, which shows that both George Hammond and William Wallace Hammond (born in Brant, N.Y. in 1831) had descendants who arrived on the Mayflower. Our Assessment records of 1878 list George Hammond as owning 379 acres of land in lot 71. His taxes were $51.06. In 1897 for the same acreage, his taxes were only $37.95! According to THE NEW CENTURY ATLAS OF ERIE COUNTY published in 1909, “The Hammond Farm contains 244 acres, owned by George Hammond, [mailing] address Irving, N.Y. R.F.D.1. Its location is in lot 71, 3 1/2 miles southeast of Angola and 23 from Buffalo, both of which are good markets. Dairying is the chief industry of this farm, there being 28 head of Holstein cows. This farm’s soil is well adapted to general crops, those which are mostly cultivated being wheat, corn, potatoes, oats, etc. About 150 tons of hay annually cut from its meadows. A modern residence and L-shaped Barn 100 x 100 and tenant house make up its building improvements. This is an A 1 farm and handled in a business-like manner.”

It appears that Hammond Road, which once extended from Milestrip Road to Cain Road, was named for this early town of Brant family. Today Hammond Road is divided in two, by the N.Y.S. Thruway. From review of a few town of Brant maps we determine that the George Hammond farm was located on the Hammond Road between Southwestern Boulevard (Rt. 20) and Cain Road. There are descendants of the Hammond family living in our Town of Brant to this day.

Kevin Hamilton Reenlists in NY Army National Guard

Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the State National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.

Specialist Kevin Hamilton from Lake View, N.Y. has reenlisted to continue service with the 105th Military Police Company.

“New Yorkers count on our Citizen Soldiers to be ready and be there when disaster strikes,” German said. “And our nation counts on our Soldiers when duty calls for overseas service.
