In Early December of 2017, Lynn and Rich Puff of Cincinnati, Ohio paid a visit to our town of Brant and village of Farnham, meeting with two members of the Brant-Farnham Historical Society, one of which was Josephine Battaglia. Lynn and Rich were here specifically to take a tour of Farnham, Erie County’s smallest village. Josephine, living in Farnham her entire life, was the perfect tour guide. Lynn Puff was especially excited to be here, as she was visiting the village that was once the home of her grandmotherMildred Villa.

In the early 1900’s, there were a couple Villa families living in Farnham, N.Y. Their children attended the Farnham school and they were some of the families instrumental in the establishment of St. Anthony’s Church (1904) and cemetery. Additionally, one of the relatives owned a store on Railroad Avenue, which later became known as Militello’s store.

We are grateful that Lynn loaned us a few photos for scanning into our archives. Todays photo taken in 1915, is of Peter (Pietro) Villa and his family who are Lynn’s mother’s great-uncle, great-aunt and cousins. Their home was located on Church Street and is the current home of Charlie Meli. In fact, Charlie Meli’s grandfather Charles purchased the home from Pietro and Concetta Villa on September 30, 1919 – 99 years ago! The family from left to right are: Isabella, Helen Alice, William, Stella, Anthony, Evangeline, Joseph, John, Salvatore, Nicholas, Josephine, Jennie, Charles, Concetta and Peter (Pietro) Villa. Southtowns Catholic School Annual Blessing of Backpacks

Saint John Paul II Parish had their annual Blessing of the Backpacks on September 7th. Before Mass started, students at Southtowns Catholic School placed all their backpacks in front of the Altar. During Mass, Father Peter Karalus and Father Michael LaMarca held up their hands, said a prayer for the back packs and everything they symbolize for the school year. When they were done, they sprinkled the back packs and congregation with Holy Water. This is a wonderful event held every year during the first week of school. LS Tenth Grade Global History Class Remembers 9/11 Attack

(September 11, 2018) Today, Mr. Bob Mahany’s tenth grade Global History and Geography class at Lake Shore Senior High School took time to learn about the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Mr. Mahany described how he and the rest of the school learned about the attacks when they happened and how our country changed in the aftermath. Using examples of heightened security measures students recognize as normal every day actions at school, to changes in the way we travel and attend entertainment events, he painted a picture of how life in the United States was before the attacks.

“September 11, 2001 to me is what Pearl Harbor was to my father,” commented Mahany. “He’s 90 years old and can still tell you exactly where he was when that attack happened. I was right here in this room. What you experience as normal everyday things in life now, those who were old enough to remember what happened see as a turning point in our lives.”

Students listened to Mahany’s description of the events of that day and were encouraged to interact with their own thoughts and questions. Earlier in the day, students took a moment during daily announcements to address the attack and reflect on our country. Both were powerful lessons on a day of remembrance.

15th Annual Brant Summer Festival Announces the Parade Winners!

The 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival parade was held on Father’s Day, June 17, 2018. The parade route began at Hammond Road, traveled down Brant-Farnham Road, then turned into and continued throughout the Brant Town Park. Parade contestants were greeted and cheered on by the many who lined the town park road. As mentioned in an earlier article, this year’s parade judges were four awesome ladies: Maureen (Connors) Shepherd, Mary Hosler (Supervisor of Evans), Karen (Connors) Erickson and Christine Mittner. It was not an easy task, but the four judges were able to come to an agreement on the winners and they are:

• Community Spirit - “Pool Theme” Float; (Jr. Eagles cheerleaders of Lake Shore Football)

• Most Unique - “Bee Keepers” Float; (Lemke Family)
