The Evans & Brant-Farnham Historical Societies Take 5th Place at the Erie County Fair
The Evans and Brant-Farnham Historical Societies teamed up once again for this year’s Erie County Fair Historical Exhibit. The combined effort resulted in two ribbons: Fifth Place and Theme. The 2019 suggested theme for all participating WNY historical societies to follow (not mandatory, but suggested if you want to win an extra ribbon) was “A day that changed our town’s history”. Our submission to the Erie County Fair Committee stated in part: “The Buffalo and State line railroad opened February 2nd, 1852 and so with its coming Evans Station was born. And with the transportation came commerce and people. Our desolate sparsely populated community of a few farmers and a saw and grist mill suddenly grew. That day in our history opened the gates of opportunity for farmers to sell their crops to the city markets. Farms developed and began exporting fruit, berries, fresh vegetables and grains. With this growth a new industry emerged “The Canning Company” that brought year round employment, farming, retail shops, hotels, service and more.” We of course must add that the Buffalo and State Line railroad also came through the village of Farnham at Farnham Station. Numerous canning factories sprung up in the village of Farnham and the town of Brant; The Erie Preserving Company, Great Lakes Packing, Fort Stanwix Canning Company, Ellis Canning Company and U.S. Canning Company, to name more than a few. And did you know that Bison Canning Company started in 1926 on a farm in Brant, New York? A year later they moved to Angola, continuing as Bison Canning Company until 1991 when they were purchased by Goya Foods, Inc. Through our display we tried to emphasize the fact, that both the Evans and the Brant-Farnham communities have strong historical ties to each other and to this year’s theme. Businesses and industries highlighted in our display were the Emblem Bicycle Factory, Lythe Tile Company, Goya Food Great Lakes and all the canning companies mentioned previously from the town of Brant and village of Farnham. Note that most of these businesses and buildings were and some still are located near the railroad lines. Enlarged photos of a train loaded with canned goods at the Erie Preserving Canning Company in 1877 and a Great Lakes Packing “Blue Top Brand” tomato label were placed on the back wall. A variety of photos, business receipts and corresponding short history descriptions were included and mounted as well. Many Evans and Brant agricultural items were on display including an apple box, dairy related items, an 1880’s seed shipping box, a few Lily shipping boxes (these shipped from Japan to the Schoellkoph Farm in Evans in 1955) and a 32 quart strawberry shipping box (handmade by an early Brant resident Edward Falk and donated to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society by Sonny Catalano). The display’s rough cut spruce floor was made from trees once standing in Caryl’s yard in Angola, N.Y. The setup/take down committee consisted of : Denny, Bob, Denise, Anna and Caryl. Angola Public Library Hosts Hot Dog Sale/ Book Sale
The Angola Public Library held its Annual Hot Dog Sale and Book Sale on Saturday July 27th, 2019. Along with the hotdogs and sausages, there was also a baked goods sale inside the library for those with a sweet tooth. The hot dogs, Italian sausage and bottled water were donated by Erie County Legislator John Mills, who has graciously sponsored and hosted the hot dog sales in prior years. During his visit, Legislator Mills also presented a most generous check to the Angola Public Library. The books, videos, DVDs and tapes available for sale filled the entire upstairs room (both on tables and under them)! Hard cover books sold for 50 cents each and paperbacks at 25 cents each. The book sale portion of this fundraiser netted close to $500 for the library. For weeks prior, Angola Public Library Director Jennifer Page and the entire Angola Public Library staff and volunteers, includLibrary Board Treasurer ing volunteers from SASI, Jackie Haderer helping with worked tirelessly preparhot dog ticket sales at the ing the library areas for Angola Library on July 27th. this annual book sale. Additional businesses, groups and individuals that helped with the event were Wegmans McKinley, Tops in Angola, Tops in Derby, Frosted Fairytale Bake Shop, Liberwyrms Book Club, Evans Garden Club and Mrs. Joanne Sack. The Evans Highway workers loaned us their grill for cooking and we (the library board members) were there to lend a hand where needed. The total combined proceeds from the day’s fundraising efforts was over $1,700. A great success!! These funds will be used for updates and renovations to the Angola Public Library. We estimate that approximately 200 people stopped in to visit at the library for this event. The community support of the Angola Public Library’s hot dog and book sale was overwhelming and we are pleased that so many were able to attend! According to numerous news clippings from 1928, “the Angola Airport was located two miles south of the village of Angola on Hardpan Road” in Brant, NY. Recently we stumbled across information regarding “The Angola Airport”. It had been compiled by Cheryl Delano (past historian for the town of Evans) for a November 19, 2006 edition of the Angola Pennysaver. Under the topic “Scenes from the Past” Cheryl wrote: “On September 9, 1928, 10,000 people were present at the dedication of an airport on Hardpan Road. Amazingly it had been only a few months since the idea was first suggested at a village meeting. A group of about 40 members organized a company and bought the field, 139 acres on Hardpan Road. It was originally owned by George Matteson who had traveled here by ox cart. (A definite contrast to the method of travel in 1928.) It was early August when the actual work was started. The ground was plowed and rolled and a 2800 ft. runway completed. It ran northeast to southeast. Another shorter runway was planned. Probably the best description is found in an article in the Buffalo Evening News on Monday, September 10, “Under the blazing sun of Sunday’s perfect afternoon, to the tune of whirring of wings and in a barrage of dust so thick one could slice it, Angola’s brand new airport was officially dedicated and opened. It was the greatest day in Angola’s history. The modest 2,000 population of the village was not increased. No, what really happened was that he 2,000 Angolians, men, women, children and babies, deserted the village for the day and journeyed two miles over a dust obscured road to the airport, where they joined with 8,000 or more others who had come from near and afar to attend the airport opening ceremonies.” Cheryl continued by writing “speakers for the day included Representative James M. Satterfield, “father of the Buffalo airport,” and others prominent in the field of aviation. The festivities included stunt flying, wing walking and a parachute drop. There were softball games and music furnished by the Angola Band. Many took their first airplane ride. To my surprise, my grandfather (Allen Guest and family) and my great-grandfather (Alfred Bartholomew) were included in this list.” The Angola Airport is one of many local history topics shared by the towns of Brant and Evans. The town of Brant’s Assession roll book of 1897 documents the Matteson land as 139 acres in lot #61, with the property taxes listed as a whopping $15.00.
