AHERA is a federal law enacted in 1987 which requires all school districts to re-inspect facilities for asbestos containing building materials. Our facilities have been inspected, and response actions are planned to ensure a continued safe environment for our students and employees. Activities include training of maintenance staff to prevent disturbance of asbestos and periodic re-inspection and surveillance activities by trained personnel. As required by regulations, Lake Shore Central (Evans-Brant) School District’s 2016 Triennial Re-Inspection was completed as of February 2016 and is available for your review in the District Office during business hours. Lee Walker of Farnham, N.Y. - Watchman for the Railroad

During mid-August of this year, the Brant–Farnham Historical Society received a box of various local history items donated by Janet Walker. Janet is the daughter of John Walker who was at one time Mayor of Farnham and historian for the town of Brant. Included in the donated items was this photo of the neighboring town of Evans. The caption on the back reads “”Lee Walker - Watchman” [for the railroad]. The year is 1942. Even without reading the painted signs, we believe that many will recognize the familiar building behind Mr. Walker as “the old macaroni factory” or “the old feed mill” located next to the tracks in the village of Angola, N.Y. From the well respected Arcadia Publishing “Evans and Angola” book authored by Cheryl Delano, we learn that “this building was built by the Tifft family in 1866 and is probably the oldest brick building in the village”. Not so long ago, a carpet store and an auction business occupied this building. Today an antique store filled with all kinds of treasures is located within its walls. If you “google” Occident Flour, you will find that it was a special patent flour milled and sold by the Russell-Miller Milling Company Flour Mill, of Buffalo, N.Y. The slogan was “Occident Flour Costs more - worth it!” The Occident Mill and Terminal Elevator were located at 87 Childs Street in the First Ward of Buffalo and today are included as part of “Silo City”. The Farnham Volunteer Fire Department won first place in the Fire Department Water Ball Competition this year at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival. It was an intense battle between three of the local fire departments; Farnham, Brant and North Collins. North Collins won second place and Brant took third place. The festival was held on Father’s Day weekend this past June at the Brant Town Park. How the contest is played: The 15” ball (approx size) is attached to a high wire, and starts out in the very center of the wire which is strung between two telephone poles. The poles are about 110 feet apart. On the ground, at opposite ends of the wire, dressed in full fire gear and using water hoses at full throttle, two teams of five members each, begin to battle, as soon as the referee give the “go” sign. The object is for each of the teams to “push” the ball all the way to the other team’s end of the wire, using only the water blasting out of the fire hose, strategy and plenty of teamwork. The team that can first push the ball to the opposite end of the wire - wins! (There are several heats.) It is fun to watch, but it certainly takes a lot of strength, stamina and skill on the part of the fire department members to direct and control that amount of water pressure for any length of time. 150 years ago, in December of 1867, a passenger train from Ohio with a destination of New York City, traveled through the village of Angola towards Buffalo. As the train passed over the bridge over the Big Sister Creek, two of the last train cars derailed. The car ahead of the last, made it to the other side of the bridge, but slid down the embankment. An investi1868 gation concluded that the accident was caused by a bent wheel on a compromised axle striking a metal plate portion of the rail that resulted in the derailment. This past Fourth of July, over a dozen inquisitive history buffs, spent the early morning of this holiday, walking in Big Sister Creek at the edge of the village. But it wasn’t just an “ordinary” walk; we were examining the site of one of the most tragic train wrecks in Western New York history. Through the expert guidance of Caryl Youngers (member of the Evans Historical Society, Buffalo - Gowanda Model Railroad Club, Angola Horror Sesquicentennial Committee and owner of Bella Terra Greenhouse) we did indeed… explore this area!!! We were encouraged to hunt for train and rail items in the creek bed and surrounding banks. Many of the items were keepers too! These rusted pieces of steel were of course not necessarily from the wreck, but mementos of our day nonetheless. And, we werethere, at the bridge where it all took place 150 years ago. It was with silent reverence that we sat under the bridge and listened while Caryl explained the events and described the many heroic people who played a role in that day. Caryl was the perfect tour-guide with a vast knowledge of not only the event itself, but also of railroad history. It was a morning to remember. This train tragedy occurred two years after the end of the Civil War. The interest in the Civil War continues to be great. So for all those history buffs out there, please be sure to look-over the website or facebook page of the Buffalo Civil War Round Table. This fine group that is the sponsor of the longest-running Lincoln Day celebration in the nation!
