Gloria P. (Pat) O’Connor of Angola, NY passed away May 26, 2018. Beloved wife of Robert J. “Oakie” O’Connor; dear mother of Robert M. and Sean P. O’Connor; grandmother of five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren; sister of Graham (Joan) Arnold, Peter C. Jentsch and the late Ann Hill; survived by many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 25th at Most Precious Blood Church, 1 O AM. Please assemble at the church. Sharon A. Brockman, age 74, of Eden, New York died Sunday, August 12, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Sharon was born January 20, 1944; a daughter of the late Joseph and Irma Romano. She was the wife of late Butch Brockman, mother of Brenda Atkinson, sister of Kathy (Bill) Sanders, Joseph (Debbie) Romano and Debbie Carnall. Also survived by a sister in law, Rita (Don) Stuhr and generations of nieces and nephews. She graduated from the Eden Central School District. She was the owner of Brockman’s Greenhouse on route 62 in Eden for many years. She was very active in the Eden community as she was a NYS Board Certified Eden Town Assessor for 20 years. She was a 40 plus year member of the Eden Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the board and as a Past Vice President. Arrangements made by LaingFuneral Home, Eden. Karen Munson (Sanford), age 59, of Cherry Creek, NY, formerly ofd Angola, NY, passed away on August 10, 2018, after a long battle with COPD and congestive heart failure. Karen was born on November 20, 1958, and resided in Eden, NY, where she graduated from Eden Senior High School in 1977. Karen spent many years with her father, Raymond Sanford Jr., on his traveling carnival, Zabel’s Amusements. In the early 1990’s she moved to Angola, NY, with her thenhusband, where she raised her five children: Roxanne (Travis) Wright , Nicole (Edward) Gessey, Melissa (Scott) Giles, Brian (Chelsea) Hanner, and Brandon (Anjeanette) Munson. Karen spent several years in Angola before relocating to Cherry Creek to be closer to her daughter, who cared for her infinitely. Karen is survived by her parents, siblings, children and 12 grandchildren: Sarah, Nathan, Ryleigh, Alexis, Brant, Genevieve, Brice, Briella, Keegan, Blake, Skyler, and her unborn grandchild that is expected to arrive on her 60th birthday. He was an avid Notre Dame Sports fan, with a particular interest in Football. He served as President of the family business, Bison Canning Company in Angola, NY, and was the 1 St. President of GOYA Foods Great Lakes, Angola, NY. He served as an Officer and Director of New York State Food Processors Association, was a member of the Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce, Angola Planning Board and an honorary member of the Angola Volunteer Fire Department. Buffalo Jazz and Swing at Angola Gazebo August 22nd

The well-known Buffalo Jazz and Swing Band will appear at the second to last concert of the year at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park on Wednesday, August 22nd at 7pm. The celebrated group normally features 12 musicians and a vocalist. They present musical styles from the 1930s to present day. They feature music from Miller, Dorsey, Goodman, Sinatra, and others. The vocalist is featured on several pieces during the evening. The band was featured in the movie “The Natural” that was filmed in Buffalo in 1984. The evening is sponsored by FlexOVit USA and the American Musicians Union.

The last concert of the 36th year of concerts at the Gazebo will be held on Wednesday, August 29th and will feature the Frankfurters, a German Show Band that have been park favorites for many years. The lively group puts on an interesting show included with a wide variety of music. They feature special European instruments including 13 foot Alpine European horns. The band is sponsored by the Lake Shore Federal Credit Union.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket and plan to participate with dancing that will be available with the last two groups to play at the park this year. The rain location for all concerts is the nearby New Angola Theater.

Miller’s Beach, Brant, N.Y. - The Old Stand 1926

For decades during the warmer summer months, people have traveled to the countryside from the inland populated cities, villages and towns, to spend as much time as possible on the shores of Lake Erie.

About two years ago, Jeff and Anne Prince of Wide Beach, Brant, N.Y. loaned a few family photos to the historical society for scanning into our archives. Included were photos of a popular summertime gathering spot by Lake Erie. It was called Miller’s Beach and was once located off of the old Lake Shore Road in Brant, N.Y. Jeff’s grandparents, Henry and Ruth (Walters) Miller were the owners and operators.

At one time, the town of Brant had a few beaches in operation to enjoy the lazy days, nights, weeks and way too short months of summer. Fred W. Brinkman included a short narrative of Miller’s Beach in our Town of Brant Sesquicentennial book published in 1989: “[Located] next door [to Brant Beach] was Miller’s Beach and every weekend their crowd would be in the thousands. They had a diving board and although Miller’s tried to keep the Brant beach crowd away, many of those from Brant beach would sneak over to use the diving board.”

The Miller’s Beach sign, once located at Route 5 near the Farnham, N.Y. water tower, points the way to the beach just a short 1-1/2 miles away on the Old Lake Shore Road

A sign once located on the Route 5 and Lotus Point Roads, pointed towards the lake, describing Miller’s beach as a picnic grove and tourist camp, complete with bathing beach, free tables and bath house. When we enlarge the Miller’s snack stand photos we can see from the advertisements that the ever popular Cracker Jack and Vernor’s ginger ale were offered for sale. Today, the beaches of Brant, N.Y. are private property, with no open community access - the exception being the Evangola State Park. People’s Choice Photo Contest at the Brant Summer Festival

There were plenty of activities to keep everyone busy and interested this year at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival held at the Brant Town Park on June 15th - 17th.

The People’s Choice Photo Contest has continued to be quite popular! There is no fee to participate and entrants may submit as many photos as they wish. It is interesting to see the different content of the photos entered as there is no specific criteria or theme. Festival-goers are asked to choose their very favorite photo from all the entries - but one and only one! (It is not easy!)

First Place this year was won by Brendan Dillemuth. He had received the most votes hands down with his gorgeous photo of a barn scene! Brendan is no stranger to our contest as last year he took both second and third place.

This year’s second place winner was Lisa Catalano with her adorable photo of a young boy taking a quick time out for a drink box break while sitting on a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch.

Third place was won by 4th grader Blake Wehrfritz. Although his submission was not a photo - people could not resist voting for this amazing hand drawn entry. Blake’s school allowed him special permission to place this drawing in our contest. It will be on display at the art exhibits in the upcoming school year. This entry was so well received that we will continue to include this style in next year’s contest.

Our fourth place photo winner was listed as Kenneth and Alysia Hontz. Unfortunately for us, they had stopped to pick up their photo and ribbon before we could take their picture. We have to mention that it was a tight competition between our second, third and fourth place winners. One of the secrets (besides having a great photo) is to make sure your photo is submitted on the first night of the festival. The more people who see it - the better your chances for extra votes! (Keep this in mind for next year’s contest.)

We were so pleased with the participation this year. Our winner’s each received a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place ribbon. Each entry received a participation ribbon. All ribbons are made in the USA.

The caption on this photo reads “Leisure Hours and the firm paid for them...on the platform. About 1902”.

Pictured in the photo are the workers and a few buildings of the Erie Preserving Company. Once located in Lot 10 on the Milestrip Road in Brant, N.Y., this area was also referred to as Fenton. At one time, Fenton even had its own post office.

We learn the following from the information written by Nina Notaro-Faltus for our Brant history books: The Fenton family founded the Erie Preserving Company in 1873. This was the first canning plant in Erie County - and it all began in Brant, NY! Benjamin Fenton was the President and James Fenton the Secretary of the company. They were two of seven children of Sarah and Solomon Fenton. In 1885 James Fenton was one of the fourteen original founders of the Associated NYS Food Processors which was then known as NYS Canned Goods Packers Association.

The Erie Preserving Company preserved all kinds of fruits and vegetables; strawberries, raspberries, peaches, pears, pie plant (rhubarb), apples, peas, lima beans, tomatoes, plums, squash and pumpkin. Local people and French immigrants were first hired, followed by Italian families.

125 years ago, the Erie County Independent, Volume XVIII Number 42 dated August 18, 1893 published the following article titled: “BRANT ERIE PRESERVING COMPANY, PROSPEROUS PEOPLE ECT.” The article itself states: “This company has a regular village with streets, dwellings ect. [sic], and a colony of about 300, mostly Italians except division foreman, and the superintendent who is M. J. Brown and evidently the right man in the right place; he is affable, takes well with the producers, is prompt, vigilant and apparently never losing sight of any feature of the large interests entrusted to his care; the factory turns off 25,000 to 40,000 cans daily and we learn the products received for canning this season are exceptionally fine, consequently these canned goods cannot be excelled.”

Today the land that at one time housed the Fenton community and Erie Preserving Company is owned and farmed by Mike and Kellie Chiavetta of Chiavetta’s Potatoes and Greenhouse. This same plot of land was also once known as the Marion Chiavetta Farm.
