James Pizzolanti and son Mike on Commercial Street in Farnham, N.Y. in 1919. The Globe Hotel, once located across the street from Pizzolanti’s Hotel, can be seen in the background.
Today’s photo was submitted to the historical society by Michele (Pizzolanti) Schifano. She is the granddaughter of James and daughter of Mike who is the baby in the photo. Michele also provided us with the following family history. Both the history and photo were included in the 125th Anniversary book for the village of Fanham, N.Y. “James Pizzolanti was born Don Vincenzo Pizzolanti in Valadermo, Italy and he arrived with his mother, father and brother, Fred, in Buffalo in 1888. Jim married Carmella Gugino in 1905. They had two children; Michael and Carmelia. Carmelia had a son James Frost. Michael married Kate Vara. They had two children: Janice (Pizzolanti) Michalski and Michele (Pizzolanti) Schifano. The Pizzolanti Hotel,” (or Pizzolanti’s as it was later known), “is considered to be an historical landmark. It is one of the oldest buildings, if not the oldest, building in the village of Farnham.” Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

Lake Shore’s Bus Fleet Reflects ‘A Strong Dedication to Safety’
In all, Lake Shore Schools’ 54-bus fleet travels 607,186 miles per year transporting the district’s students. And it’s done very, very safely … in fact, the fleet closed in on a near perfect 100% on its 2018-2019 New York State Department of Transportation annual inspections. The district’s buses are inspected twice a year – every six months – by the DOT. “They look for any safety defects and make sure the vehicle is operating as intended by the manufacturer,” says transportation supervisor Perry Oddi. “And they make sure it meets FMCSA regulations.” The FMCSA is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association, an agency in the U.S. Department of Transportation that regulates the trucking industry. Its primary mission is to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. Lake Shore’s score of 99.1%, Mr. Perry noted, is derived from the total number of inspections and number of inspections passed. A state DOT letter notifying the district of its achievement states, “Your commendable performance indicates a strong dedication to safety and a commitment to sound maintenance standards and practices.” Pictured: School bus mechanic Mike Stevenson at work. The following excerpt was prepared by Beverly Wasmund for our Village of Farnham 125th Anniversary Book published in 2017: “The Farnham Ladies Drum Corps was formed/started by Helen Watt in 1938. She gave piano lessons to many children in Farnham and the surrounding area and was the organist at Farnham’s Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Most every village and town in the area had active fire departments and were proud to march in their uniforms at all the summer parades. Music was provided by drum corps and school bands. Helen decided that Farnham should form a corps and gathered together the interested women. They learned to march, carry a drum, bells or a bugle, flag or banner.” The Farnham Ladies Drum Corps collected many trophies through the years – plenty of them were First Place! They disbanded in 1955. For the years during and after, they became the pride of the smallest village in Erie County – Farnham, N.Y. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

The Evans Senior Center was fortunate enough to recruit a speaker on past and present “Stock Market” issues which was very well received by the senior center members. This speaker was very knowledgeable and explained to participants how the Stock Market works and the effects it has on our government. Experts have pointed to factors such as irrational exuberance, greed, and lack of transparency as the causes of these fluctuations. The speaker touched on what the responsibility is of the government or central banks to prevent unsettling and irrational market swings. The average citizen can navigate the ups and downs by playing an active and informed role in managing his/her financial affairs. Providing information and resources from the monthly speakers at the center is the driving force that motivates the Director to continue recruiting and arranging the diverse presentations. Christopher Moses Named to UCHC All-Academic Team
Christopher Moses, of Lakeview, NY, was one of 17 Elmira College student-athletes on the men's ice hockey team placed on the 2018-19 rendition of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference office on July 30. The Soaring Eagles have had over 10 student-athletes earn academic plaudits from the UCHC office for the second-straight season, and it marks the sixth consecutive season that the Soaring Eagles have achieved the feat, dating back to their time in the ECAC West. Chris Moses '19, Blake O'Neill '19 and Charl Pretorius '19 all earned the honor for the third time in their careers. Adam Eby '21, Calvin Hughson '20, Harry Kramer '20, Aleksi Ojala '21, Connor Powell '20, Andrew Pucci '20 and Patrick Schmelzinger '20 earned the distinction for the second consecutive season.
