“The silent embarrassment of modern astrophysics is that we do not know how even a single one of these stars managed to form.” Martin Harwit, Science, Vol. 231, Page 1201 -1202, March 7, 1986

It’s still a problem for astrophysicists to answer that question. No one has ever seen an explosion, by experiment or observation, produce the amazing order we see in the heavens. Big bangs produce chaos every time. There has never been an exception. Yet we know there are enough stars set in place for everyone on the earth to own 11 trillion of them for themselves. WOW – that’s a lot of stars and a lot of order! Our verse above gives a 5 word explanation, “…He made the stars also…”

Some benefits of growing older....

Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives.

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old.

• Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness.

• Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail).

• Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brans simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions.

• Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them.

Perform at the Brant Summer Festival

Members of “The Bird’s Nest” Buffalo, NY entertained the June 9th, Friday night BrantFest audience with their amazing circus-like performances. A few of the performers remained after their show to enjoy the top notch music of Underground Stampede and some of Roseann and Ryan Turner’s strawberry shortcake at the Brant Summer Festival.

Shown in the Photo: Top row L-R: Silk Aerialists Nina Vega-Westhoff and Mellisa Boglioli, Manager (and Partner Acrobat Performer) Ben Madoff, Pryomancy performers Gillian Tunney and Potter Dee. Front row L-R: Silk & Rope Aerialists Sarah Caputi and Jolene (Friend) Lemke (born & raised in Brant, NY– our home-town girl!)

Hamburg Kingsmen Perform at Brant Summer Fest

The Hamburg Kingsmen Alumni Marching Band performed at the 14th Annual Brant Summer Festival on Sunday June 11, 2017. This is the third year the band has attended the summer festival and the group’s outstanding music was enjoyed by all in attendance. In the photo above, the band is shown preparing their lineup for the parade. Following the parade, they gave two superb mini concerts. Over 50 band members were in attendance and participated! The Kingsmen’s performance was made possible by Chiavetta’s Catering, Councilman Mark & Michelle DeCarlo, Bill & Patty Friend, Judge Clark and Donna Borngraber, Beverly Wasmund and Janet Bowman.

Paint the Village of Angola Beautiful Project

On July 22, 2017 the Village of Angola hosted a one day, community service effort to “beautify” nine buildings in it’s business district. Approximately 108 members from our community and beyond volunteered their time to paint facades, paint tables and chairs, shingle an overhang, clean inside and outside of buildings, plant flowers, pull weeds, mow lawns, sweep sidewalks, trim shrubs, wash windows, put up shutters, flower boxes and signage, play music, feed volunteers, and add white lights to our tree lined Main Street in the Village of Angola. The idea was started by two friends who regularly took walks that led them through Main Street. They went door to door to recruit workers and also took up collections from residents and area businesses to help pay for the supplies to help their neighbors in the business district “beautify” their buildings. Our major donors were Gernatt Asphalt Products, Goya Foods, and Dr. Mark Damerau. New Era Cap, Shultz & Co Hardware and Appliances, Ace Hardware, Chiavetta’s Greenhouse. Home Depot, Tim Clark, Evans Garden Club, Addison’s Funeral Home, Connors Hotdog Stand, Lake Shore Hardware, Sam’s Lumber, Tops Angola location Basil’s Service Center, the Angola Pennysaver Inc., and local residents were also instrumental in helping the funding of this project.

As the saying goes, “Many Hands Make Light Work”, and this grass roots effort was a success due to the outpouring and enthusiasm of the volunteers that showed up to make a difference in their community. Thank you for your generosity in time, talent, and financial resources. It truly was an inspirational day. Without all of you, the transformations that took place on one day would not have been possible.

This is just the first step to bring new life to our rural community. Angola is rich with history in trains, and bicycles, and can claim inventors that have impacted the world. We will be continuing this effort in conjunction with the Town of Evan’s motto “we are open for business”! Let’s support our local businesses, and make Angola vibrant and bustling once again.
