A Special Pictorial Postal Cancel to Begin the 125th Anniversary of the Village of Farnham

Farnham, the smallest village in Erie County was incorporated on June 15th, 1892 and was named for one time merchant Leroy Farnham. To kick off the start of Farnham’s 125th year, the Brant–Farnham Historical Society initiated a special pictorial cancel event at the Farnham Post Office. The cancel’s Anniversary design consists of the signature Farnham Water Tower Landmark and boasts of the 125th anniversary years 1892 – 2017.

On June 15, 2017 a steady stream of people stopped in from Farnham and Brant as well as various neighboring communities to obtain this celebration cancel. Many of those stopping by said they enjoy collecting the special postmarks. (In fact, more than a few mentioned that they had collected all 16 of the Lincoln Funeral Train route postmarks, a project which the society initiated in 2015.) The first visitor of the day to obtain the 125th Anniversary cancel was John Leatherbarrow.

To add to the festivities, the society had a small historical table display of various Farnham history related items such as photos of the Farnham Drum Corp, Farnham native Clint Holmes, the Farnham School, Fire Hall, churches, newspaper clippings and more. There were give away raffles of (2) framed Water Tower Engineering prints and (2) HO Scale Water Towers. Those who obtained the special pictorial cancel were able to enter. To add to the excitement of the day, the society also handed out 125th Anniversary posters and postcards to all visitors. At the 5PM closing time, PSE Karen Herc had issued over 195 anniversary cancels! (That is 195 in just 4 hours of window time!)

Along with the USPS, Farnham Postmaster David Tempestoso and PSE at Farnham - Karen Herc have been extremely supportive of the Brant– Farnham Historical Society’s celebration project. Christian LoGrasso is the designer of this ERIE ROAD STATION Postmark for zip code 14061. The cancel is available until July 15th. More information can be found in the USPS website - USPS postal bulletin dated 6/08/2017. https://about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/pb2017.htm

Evans Senior Center Offers

Great New Programs

Evans Senior Center keeps moving forward with new programs for the seniors, such as Sitting in Motion Exercise. This particular class had a great attendance number and it allowed individuals that have issues standing for long periods on their feet to be able to enjoy cardio exercise and burn calories while being in a sitting position for this class. The director felt that this kind of exercise brought a balance and alternative opportunity for many seniors that are coming to the center and by the request of the seniors this exercise class will be back in fall.
