From the Old Photo Album Brant #1 School 1937-1938 3rd & 4th Grade
On November 19, 1936 the new Brant #1 School was opened on Brant-North Collins Road. The former school that was located on the Brant-Angola Road, was later sold and used as an apartment building. The Brant #1 School centralized with the Town of Evans in 1950, joining the Lake Shore Central School District. It was a sad day in 2010, when the Brant #1 School closed its doors. In 2011 the new Brant #1 School building was purchased and renovated as the new Brant Town Hall. The portion of the building shown in the 1937 photo, is the area that today houses the town of Brant Police. Pictured in the photo are: First Row (l-r): Leonard Guzzetta, James Brocato, Unknown, Pasquale Gugino, Joseph Catalano, James Mirusso, Joe (Rocky) Gugino, Anthony (Sonny) Catalano, Joe Gugino. Back Row (l-r): Christine (Dolly) Catalano, Lucille Ellis, Christine Catalano, Phyllis Notaro, Sarah Rozumalski, Frances Notaro, Sarah Muffoletto and teacher - Anna Martorana. This was the first teaching job for Anna Martorana who was born and raised in Farnham, N.Y. Once grown, most of the children pictured in this photo, chose to remain in Brant and raise their families here. Their teacher Anna Martorana, became a professor earning the title of Dr. In 1977 she was elected as the Mayor of the Village of Farnham serving in that capacity until 1986. Phyllis Notaro made a name for herself in the sport of bowling, becoming a National, State and City –“Hall of Famer”. She was and is one of our local celebrities! Both Phyllis and her sister Frances Notaro were life-long residents of Brant until their recent move last year to Orchard Park, N.Y. Brothers Joe and Anthony (Sonny) Catalano farmed together until well into their adult years. Sonny’s twin sister was Christine (Dolly) Catalano. Today at 88 years of age, Sonny is the only living Charter Member of the Brant Volunteer Fire Department. His brother Joe was also a Charter Member. Lenny Guzzetta became owner of Brant Machine on the Brant-Angola Road and was listed as Treasurer of the Brant Volunteer Fire Department in 1956. James Mirusso was a Veteran of WWII and he too was a Charter Member of the Brant Volunteer Fire Department. Sadly, in 2018 some of these pictured students are no longer with us. However - some are! And...quite a few of the descendents of these students are today themselves, residents of the town of Brant. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ___________

The Village of Farnham Remembers Our Veterans
Residents and elected and appointed officials of the village of Farnham and town of Brant came together to remember our fallen Veterans on Memorial Day 2018. The morning ceremony was held at the Steven J. Rauker Veterans Memorial Park on Commercial Street, Farnham, N.Y. To begin, Farnham Mayor Jere Hoisington welcomed and thanked everyone for attending. He first called upon Rev. Jim Fliss of St. Anthony’s Church to open the service with a prayer. Mayor Hoisington then again took the podium and in his enlightening speech, he reminded us all that “since 1868 we have come together in our communities, towns and villages to place flags or flowers on the graves of those who have given their last full measure of devotion to our country.” He continued by adding “...The heroes that we remember today are not exclusive to any gender, race or religion. They are a diverse group wedded to the common principle that America is a nation worth dying for. As we observe Memorial Day every year, the families remember their fallen loved ones every day.”...He closed with these perfectly chosen words that we never tire of hearing: “God Bless You and God Bless America!” During the ceremony, Farnham’s own Aslin Rovnak sang “The Star Spangled Banner”; her beautiful voice ringing out confident, loud and strong. And…as the “DJ” for the day, she later played Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” - an all time patriotic favorite! The morning’s reflective observance also included a speech by Sr. Chief Neil I. Ross, US Navy Ret., the solemn placement of the five flags in honor of the five branches of service as well as the traditional placement of the memorial wreath at the base of the Veteran’s monument. People’s Choice Award at the Brant Summer Festival
The Town of Brant was a bustle of activity this past Father’s Day weekend with the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival and activities. Town of Brant Justice and Summer Festival Committee Member Chad Kaczmarek along with a few other festival committee members, presented the coveted People’s Choice “Best in Show Tractor Award” to Marty Castle Jr. There were eight other tractors in the competition, including an older style Ford, five various models and years of International Harvester and two gigantic John Deere tractors. The people spoke and Marty Jr.’s (and dad Marty Sr’.s) Ford tractor received the most votes overall. Marty Jr. took a few minutes away from the water slide bounce house to accept the award. Besides entering Marty Castle Jr. and Marty his tractor in the competition, Castle Sr. Marty Jr. also drove his tractor in the festival parade which began at 1PM on Sunday. This spring, talented faculty and students from the Art and Technology Departments at Lake Shore Senior High School collaborated to create a large 3-D mural on the side of Tony Troidl’s “Taste of the Midway” building, which is located at 97 Main Street in the Village of Angola. The mural project was initiated by Corinne Damerau-Best as phase 2 of the “Paint the Village of Angola Beautiful” initiative that took place last summer with the help of 108 members of the community. The students were asked to create a colorful mural which depicted aspects of Angola’s vibrant past and current day energy. Art students, Maddy Miller, Hannah Metty, and Lexi Wiens began sketching ideas inspired by Angola’s history, including the prominent railway, which dates back to 1852, the Emblem Bicycle Company, dating back to 1904, and the beautiful Community Clock. They combined those images with the Lake Shore Eagle Mascot, ice cream cones, representing the “Taste of the Midway” and geometric shapes. Graphic art design student, Ryan Cervola, took the sketches and created a dynamic graphic for the mural. Painting directly onto the 82 feet long by 13 feet high corrugated metal wall was going to be a challenge for the students. Technology teacher, Mike Frew, came up with the ingenious idea to cut out all of the major design elements from exterior plywood, paint them in school, and then install them later on site. Mr. Panfil’s Technology students cut, sanded, and primed the images, and then the Art students painted them. When they were done, the Lake Shore Grounds Crew, Eric Kohlmeier, and Mike Sciarrino, under the direction of John Wilson, along with Technology teachers, Mike Frew and Chris Panfil, and Art faculty, Katie Zittel, Megan Smaldino, and Marcia Belliotti installed the pieces on site. The final result is an exciting mixedmedia mural which embraces the spirit and pride of Angola. This project came to fruition because of the support of our talented school faculty, students, and administration, and the generous financial support of the Lake Shore Teachers’ Association donating the plywood, and Randall Best and Lee Widmer-Wick donating the paint. When you look inside the Evans Senior Center , you won’t see people just sitting around. The seniors of Evans community have been showing up week after week to learn the old and newest line dancing. Instructor Gloria Ellis has outdone herself with patience and dedication of teaching a minimum of # 25 members weekly on the most updated country dances. Staff and director witness the excitement in the faces of the members when they master the dance that has been taught. It is awesome to watch the growth and positive attitude that is being seen at the center and not only are the seniors burning calories but reenergizing their mind and soul. Members that attend weekly line dancing, showed off their skills at the Spring Fling Social Event that was held at the Senior Center.
