It’s officially summer! What we’ve all been waiting for: picnics, hiking, swimming, and many opportunities to include our dogs in the fun! It's tempting to bring Fido with us on our summer adventures, so let’s put together a list of necessities for a successful and safe excursion! Summer Tip #1: Like humans, dogs are uncomfortable in too much sun. They can overheat, get sunburned, and dehydrated rather quickly. It’s always best to rest in the shade, have sunblock, & bottles of water nearby for any outdoor activity. A kiddie pool is another great idea for your pet to cool off in the summer heat, but do not leave them unattended. Locally, Golden Paws Pet Hotel & Daycare is hosting a pool party at their Derby location for dogs on July 3rd! Let Fido beat the heat and swim with some pals, run through the sprinklers, and enjoying some frozen treats! Summer Tip #2: Heat radiating from the pavement is overbearing for dog’s sensitive pads, as they can burn and bleed. If you can’t walk barefoot on the ground, neither should your pet. It’s best to go for walks in the morning and evening when the ground isn’t in direct sunlight, there’s more shade, and the temperatures are not at their days peak. Summer Tip #3: All sorts of exciting things happen during the summer with various scents, critters, and sights. It’s your safest bet to keep your dog on a leash when you are out exploring or socializing. Dogs can become easily distracted and excited seeing new things, and can easily get lost or injured if they are not safely at your side. If at home, be sure the screens on windows and doors are securely in place so that your pets can’t escape. With the 4th of July coming up and the sound of fireworks, many cats and dogs become terrified and accidentally escape through screened areas. Evans Senior Center continues Intergenerational Program partnership with Willies H. Carrier Educational Center Cosmetology department. As we are witnessing the continuing progress of new ideas and programs that are now at the center, this one is the 1st time partnership. Director Veronica Sullivan states she and the seniors were both very impressed to view the younger generation of student’s display of work ethic, along with pride in their skills that were being performed. It was a nice treat for our seniors to be pampered and provide the students the opportunity to practice their skills that were taught to them throughout the year. The seniors experienced manicure, pedicures, haircuts and facials. It is a necessary effort to promote the interaction of youth and other generations, for it allows emotional and mental stimulation which, then triggers fond memories and encourages healthy conversation between two generations. The McGuire Group, operator of five local nursing and rehabilitation facilities, announces the appointment of Dana M. Mata, RN, as administrative director of its Harris Hill Nursing Facility on Wehrle Drive in Williamsville. Previously, she held the position of director of nursing at Harris Hill from 20002003 and also served as acting administrator at The McGuire Group’s Seneca Health Care Center in West Seneca in 2017. In addition to her roles with The McGuire Group, Mrs. Mata has served as a vice president of quality, education and clinical risk for Lexington Facilities and Apex Health Care Solutions based out of Chicago, IL; as a senior director of clinical risk management for Tara Cares, LLC in Orchard Park; and as a consultant for Bishop Rehabilitation and Nursing in Syracuse. Mrs. Mata holds a bachelor of science degree from Buffalo State College and has completed all of the nursing home administrator courses at a master’s level at various institutions. She resides in Derby with her husband Richard and has two children, Richard (Liz) of Grand Island and Dr. Brian (Amanda) of Hamburg. She also has four grandchildren.
