Frances Aronica (nee Fuoco)

Florence Sinicki (nee Pappas)

Florence Sinicki, nee Pappas (age 98), peacefully passed away May 27, 2018 in Schenectady, NY. In 1946 she married Giulio Federici. Together they raised their nieces and nephew, Joan Salli Santora Gaggiano (deceased), Judy Salli (Frank) Angilella, and Tom (Carol) Salli. She was widowed in ’71, and in ‘76 married Edward Sinicki. Florence’s working life began early, helping at the family restaurant during the Great Depression. She was employed at CurtissWright Corp. in Buffalo backing up the rivets in the C-46 Curtiss Commando until the end of WWII. She and her fellow “Rosie the Riveters” were laid off the day the war ended. Florence continued her working career at Trico Plant #1 in Buffalo until retirement in ‘85. She and Edward enjoyed retirement in Delray Beach, FL. She is well remembered for her many years of service at Queen of Peace, chairing the committee to make Rosaries for the Missionaries and teaching others how to make them. Widowed once again in ‘86, Florence remained in Delray Beach until 2013 when she left to live with her nephew Tom (Carol) in Guilderland, NY. Florence is survived by her brother Christ (Leah) Pappas, Angola, nephews C. Richard (Carol) Pappas, Angola, Timothy (Sharon) Pappas, Angola, Christian (Erin) Pappas, Rochester, Michael (Alyssa) Pappas, Rochester, niece Judy (Frank) Angilella, Coral Springs, FL, nephew Tom (Carol) Salli Guilderland. Great nephews Thomas Dean Santora, Scott Gaggiano, Dominic Salli, Frank Angilella, Jr, great niece Julie Angilella, and many great great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her sister Irene Pappas Hoffman and brother in law Harry Hoffman, Stow, Ohio. Arrangement by the Addison Funeral Home, Inc., where services will be held Saturday at 10:30AM. ___________

Justin David Moore

Justin David Moore, age 33, formerly of Angola, NY, passed away following a brief illness at Gates Vascular Institute on May 23, 2018 with his mother and sister by his side. Born January 17, 1985 in Gettysburg, PA, to Janine R. Motto (Lancaster) and Jeffery D. Moore (Lexington, KY). A 2004 graduate of Lake Shore, member of football, volleyball and chess teams. Justin was an avid sports fan who loved the Bills and Sabres. He was a former member of Boy Scout Troop 528, of Angola and enjoyed learning about the weather, history, playing golf and was an amateur pod caster. He loved spending time with family and friends talking and sharing statistics. Justin was employed at the both the Hamburg and Cheektowaga Walmart. Justin cherished his time with his dog Buddy. Justin is survived by his mother Janine R. Motto, father Jeffery D. Moore, and sister Jessica R. Moore (Depew). He is further survived by maternal grandparents Gerald and Janice Motto (Dunkirk), paternal grandparents Clifford and Alice Holliday and several aunts and uncles: Christopher S. (Sherry) Motto (Nobelsville), Glenn A. (Samantha) Motto (Altamont, NY), Sharon L. (Brian) Ardillo (Dunkirk) and the late Laurie M. (Tony) Faso (Fredonia, NY). Kent (Linda) Moore (Lewisville, TX), Terri Moore (Zebulon, NC), Frank (Nancy) Thomas (Chesterfield, VA), Jason (Jennifer) Moore, (Evan, GA), and many cousins. Justin was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Josiah (Patricia) Moore (Carl isle, PA), and Barbara Holliday (Colleyville, TX). Friends and family are invited to a memorial service Saturday, June 2 at noon, at the Evans Center Vol. Fire Hall. The Joseph Morgano Farm Labor Camp was once located on the Brant-Reservation Road in Brant, N.Y. These petite homes were used as seasonal housing for the laborers who helped to plant, cultivate and harvest the crops on the farm. Quite a few of the Brant farmers belonged to or established cooperatives to process and pack the fruits and vegetables of their labor. Joseph Morgano was one of the Brant farmers who became a member of the ProducerCanners Cooperative Inc. Bicyclists and motorists are reminded that bicycles on public streets have the same rights and responsibility as automobile drivers. Respect the right-of-way of bicyclists because they are entitled to share the road with other drivers. Here are some important points for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to remember: Bicyclists: • Must ride in the same direction as other traffic, not against it. • Must ride in a straight line as near to the curb or edge of roadway as practical -not on the sidewalk. • Must make left and right turns in the same way that drivers do, using the same turn lanes. • May legally move left to turn left, to pass a parked or moving vehicle, another bicycle, an animal, or to make a turn, avoid debris or any hazard. • May choose to ride near the left curb or edge of a one-way street. • May use a left turn lane. lf the bicyclist is traveling straight ahead, he or she should use a through traffic lane rather than ride next to the curb and block traffic making right turns. Drivers: • Must look carefully for bicyclists before opening doors next to moving traffic or before turning right. • Must safely merge toward the curb or into the bike lane. • Must not overtake a bicyclist just before making a right turn. Merge first, then turn. Pedestrians: (NYS V&T Law-Article 27-Section 1156. Pedestrians on roadways) • (a)Where sidewalks are provided and they may be used with safety it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway. • (b)Where sidewalks are not provided any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall when practicable walk only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction. Upon the approach of any vehicle from the opposite direction, such pedestrian shall move as far to the left as is practicable. Just remember when riding your bike, be courteous, follow the rules of the road, wear safety equipment and when on your bike or in your automobile always practice defensive operation. LS Middle School Honor Society Cleans Up Around Town

On Thursday, May 24, eighteen Lake Shore Middle School Honor Society members participated in a Village of Angola community service clean up project. The students along with faculty members Beth Schamberger and Ronald Tonelli, and residents Corinne Damerau-Best and Carl Unger, spent the morning working to beautify Pioneer Cemetery and the Most Precious Blood Community Garden. After a lunch break at Dan’s Restaurant, they all worked together to clean up the sidewalks on Main Street in the village. We are fortunate to have these civic-minded young people in our community and are hoping to make this an annual event. Southtowns Catholic School Visits Botanical Gardens

Mrs. Hill’s second grade and Miss Rozwood’s first grade spent the day at the Erie County Botanical Gardens and Our Lady of Victory Basilica. The students first visited the Botanical Gardens to create individual terrariums and to tour the beautiful gardens. While creating the terrariums, the students also learned about the different pats of a plant and the water cycle. They ended their day by taking a tour of the Basilica and visiting the Father Baker Museum. St. Columban’s on the Lake Hosts Worldwide Mission Leadership

St. Columban’s on the Lake Retirement Home in Silver Creek recently hosted a visit by the newly elected leadership of the International Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of St. Columban, who are also known as the Columban Sisters. The members of the new congregation leadership team, Sisters Angela Yoon from China, Kathleen and Susanna Choi from Myanmar, and Rebecca Conlon from Pakistan, came to experience firsthand the compassionate care provided to residents of St. Columban’s on the Lake and to learn about the local community. The residents, employees and volunteers welcomed them and had the opportunity to learn more about other missionary works of the Columban Sisters. The Missionary Sisters of St. Columban is a religious congregation of women dedicated to lives of prayer and service among those in need in various countries throughout the world. Serving the elderly is one of many essential ministries of the sisters who provide a home for elders in Korea, Ireland and here in Silver Creek. “Our elders cared for us, raised us, taught us,” said Sr. Susanna Choi, “and they are among the most vulnerable people in every culture. It is important that they receive all the comfort and care we can provide them.” The Columban Sisters acquired the Tudor Gothic building, now known as St. Columban’s on the Lake Retirement Home, from the Columban Fathers. The fathers had provided seminary training for young men preparing for the priesthood since 1924. When the school was closed in 1968 the Columban Sisters acquired the building and remodeled it to adapt it to meet the state requirement for care of the elderly. Our recent article failed to mention another owner of this corner property which was referred to as the Farnham Garage and/or Kraft’s Garage. Fred Manguso, was also an owner of this property, and it was under his management and ownership that it was known as the Farnham Garage. From 1925-1994 this garage stood at the intersection of Route 249 and Route 5. In the fall of 1994, the building was totally demolished and removed. As Dr. Anna Martorana had mentioned previously, over its lifetime this building served as a garage, a bus stop, a waiting room, a gathering place for teen-agers, a candy store, source of employment for a few people and a repository for a variety of used tools and autos.
