Dominick “Chip” Catalano

Nancy V. Barber

Nancy V. Barber passed away Sunday May 19, 2019 in her village of Silver Creek home, she was 77. Beloved wife of Gary D. Barber; loving mother of Arlene (Jonathan) Anderson. Sister of Laurence Feltham. Cherished grandmother of Ashley Anderson. Reverend Nancy graduated from SUNY Fredonia in 1963 with a BA in Music Education, majoring in Voice. Upon graduating, she taught elementary music in West Seneca, North Tonawanda, and Hamburg public schools. She later worked as a music therapist at the Gowanda Psychiatric Center. Feeling called to Christian Ministry, she attended the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfiled, MO and was ordained to the ministry in 1992. During her career she minstered to Assembly of God Churches in Fredonia, Silver Creek and Westfield, NY. Along with her husband Gary, Reverend Barber founded His Way Assembly of God Church in Angola, NY in 1995, retiring in 2012. Arrangements by Addison Funerla Home, Inc. ___________

Janeen Elizabeth Garner of Lackawanna, NY, entered into rest on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the age of 48, after a courageous battle with cancer. Loving daughter of Linda (Schwallie) Baker (Gordon) and the late Joseph Budd Garner; dear sister of James, Laura, Renae (Joseph Halas); longtime companion and best friend of John Branchini; loving aunt of Erin, Brent, Tyler, Jerrod, and Zachary; great aunt of Lorelei, Jerry and Charlotte; also survived by her many loving cousins. rrangements made by Addison Funeral Home, Angola, NY. Dominick “Chip” Catalano of Forestville, passed away May 19, 2019 at Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Mr. Catalano was born July 10, 1931 in Buffalo, NY to Dominick and Josephine (Mateczom) Catalano. He worked at Muscato Farms in Brant most of his life and after retirement at Evangola State Park in the maintenance department. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife Lucy (Muscato), a daughter Sandy (Donald) Wells of Hilton, NY, a son, Mark (Lynette) Catalano of Forestville, four grandchildren, Jeni (Kyle) Whigham, Stacy (Chad) Cummins, Kendra Catalano and Derek Catalano, two great-grandchildren, Brenden and Nolan Whigham, two sisters, Catherine Green and Jo Anne Poulsen, and a brother, Stanley Catalano. He is predeceased by two brothers, Anthony and John Catalano. Arrangements by Laing Funeral Home. A private interment will take place at a later date at Mt Carmel Cemetery in Brant. Matthew W. Bingenheiner of Angola, NY entered into rest May 17, 2019 at age 88. Beloved husband of 68 years to Joan M. (Gradl) Bingenheimer; dearest father of Michael W. Martha Louise Hunt

Martha Louise Hunt, longtime resident of Hamburg, was an active volunteer in her communities of Blasdell, Hamburg, and Evans. She died in Hamburg on May 9 at the age of 98. She began her teaching career in Hamburg School District in 1943 and retired from Frontier Central School District in 1977. During her years of teaching, she would tutor children free of charge, made home visits, especially to those students who were critically ill, and welcomed students into her home. While teaching in Frontier, she became very active in the American Field Service which sponsored students from other countries. Mrs. Hunt was active in her churches in Blasdell and Angola. At the Union Presbyterian Church of Blasdell, Mrs. Hunt was a Sunday School teacher, a junior church leader, a junior youth group leader, a deacon, and was chosen as Woman of the Year. As a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Angola, Mrs. Hunt was known for baking large quantities of pies and other baked goods for events and fundraisers. Even at the age of 96, she baked over 30 pies and hundreds of cookies for the church’s strawberry social. At the First Congregational Church, she belonged to the Stitcheri and Tuesday Sewing Groups. Among her projects were making clothing protectors and lap pads for Cradle Beach and for the elderly/ disabled. Mrs. Hunt was a member of the Hamburg Historical Society for over 50 years. Before she passed, Martha was the oldest member of her church in Angola and also recognized by the National Geographic Society as their longest subscriber. She always endeavored to help those around her, even in her last days. Mrs. Hunt is predeceased by her husband, George Albert Hunt. She is survived by 2 daughters, Georgianna (Terrence) Murphy and Diana (Michael) Collopy, 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 9th, at 2 PM in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Angola. Arrangements by Addison Funeral Home, Inc. ___________

A few years back, in recognition of Memorial Day, Hamburg Town Historian Jim Baker wrote an article for “The Sun”. Material for his story was supplied by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society and some excerpts of his informative historical tale follow: “It was March of 1893. The sons and daughters of several Civil War veterans met at the home of Elbridge G. Fenton in Brant. Their purpose was to organize an association to raise money for a monument in memory of the soldiers and sailors from the town of Brant who had enlisted in the Union Army. Four years later in 1897, a group of the association members, led by Elbridge G. Fenton, Morgan. L. Clark, A.S. Parker and Seba Velzy traveled to Angola in a horse-drawn wagon to pick up the cannon and transport it to the Brant Cemetery. The cannon and one solid shot of 100 pounds, was a gift from the federal government. The transportation cost to the association was $20.10.” It was on MEMORIAL DAY of 1899 (120 years ago) that the cannon was dedicated with services hosted by the James Ayer Post No. 202. Morgan L. Clark, a Civil War veteran himself, “later became secretary of the Soldiers and Sailor Monument Association of Brant, Erie County, N.Y. He was very active in the movement to honor the memory of veterans from the war”. It is possible that Morgan presided over funeral services of his fellow veterans, as these handwritten graveside words were found in his personal notebook (spelling corrected): “Comrades, This is the grave of ______. In memory of the honored and heroic dead whose remains here find shelter and repose, we deposit these flowers. May the lessons of the purity which they symbolize rest in our hearts and incite in any the emotion of patriotism which _____ exemplified in life and in death.” Morgan L. Clark, enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 at the age of 16. He served alongside his father Charles S. Clark, who was 43 at that time and also serving in the Union Army. Both men are buried in the Brant Cemetery. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

Lance Corporal Daniel Kusior, who was a native and lifelong resident of Brant was honored by Richard Horwood and the town of Brant residents on June 23, 1968. (L-R) Dan’s father Stanley, his mother Josephine, Daniel Kusior and Mr. Horwood

While reading the 1968 strawberry festival annual booklet, we came across this story of one of our brave town of Brant Veterans: “On January 25, 1968, Lance Corporal Daniel Kusior, a native and resident of Brant was seriously wounded in Viet Nam. Daniel had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March of 1967 and trained at Parris Island. When he arrived in Viet Nam he was stationed near Dong Ha. While rescuing wounded army soldiers from a battle field, Daniel himself was wounded by shrapnel that passed through his right leg and lodged in his left leg. His right leg was then amputated above the knee. On May 15, 1968 Daniel was awarded the Purple Heart for Bravery. Daniel’s parents are Stanley and Josephine (Renaldo) Kusior. His six siblings are Stanley Jr., Marjorie Pero, Mary Lou Carson, Eugene, Kathleen and Linda.” On June 23, 1968 at the Brant Strawberry Festival, Daniel Kusior was honored for the great sacrifice he made for all. The annual booklet was dedicated to him by the residents of the town of Brant and closed with the following statement “Words cannot express our feelings for Daniel and the great sacrifice he has made for all of us.” God Bless all of our Veterans and the sacrifices they have made to keep our county safe.
