Hank Wojda

Hank Wojda of Sunset Bay, N.Y., died at his winter home in Labelle, FL on April 17, 2017 at 78 years old. Following graduation, Hank worked at Jafco Marina. He then started Keene Marine in 1960, in Sunset Bay, with his brother Benny and close friend Al Greenwood as partners.

It was during this time that he met his future wife Elaine, while she was on vacation in Sunset Bay. Hank’s love and knowledge of boating also led to his position as Manager of Sturgeon Point Marina and the Buffalo Small Boat Harbor. Later in life, Hank ran Bay Marina in Sunset Bay, with the help of his two sons, until his retirement. Additionally, he was the co-owner and operator of Carousel Skating Centers of Western New York throughout the 70’s and 80’s.

Hank was a positive influence on many people with his generous, happy, humorous, often silly, and unique personality. He had a creative imagination and was always thinking about and planning his next project. When he wasn’t designing the world’s next big invention, he enjoyed finding great deals at all the local thrift stores. Along with his love of boats, Hank also loved hunting and was an NRA Hunter Training Instructor. He shared his love of hunting and the camaraderie of being at hunting camp with his family and friends. Hank is survived by his wife Elaine M. (Schaffer) Wojda, who he was madly in love with and married to for 54 years. Wonderful father of Kurt P. (Jeannie Peresan) Wojda, Carrie L. (David) Newman, and Lance M. Wojda. Beloved grandfather of Kurt P. Wojda Jr., Brandon S. Wojda, Kyrstin K. Wojda, and Tyler H. Wojda. Brother of the late Bernard M. Wojda and Alice M. (George) Dolce. Also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and his loyal dog E-Dee. Arrangements entrusted to the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, Inc., Silver Creek NY. Mrs. Erin Wodzinki, Speech and Language Pathologist at A. J. Schmidt Elementary School, is working magic with our students. Mrs. Wodzinski is also a certified yoga instructor with Radiant Child Yoga Levels 1-2. Her newly obtained certificate is benefiting our little ones at AJS. Yoga is the “union” or coming together of mind (thoughts and feelings) and physical body. Many people feel an overall sense of well-being when they practice yoga.

A. J. Schmidt students in Kindergarten and second grade classrooms are learning to practice yoga and mindfulness.

Mindfulness and yoga can help students learn to focus, manage stress, regulate emotions and develop positive outlooks. They are also developing better coping skills and communication skills. The students enjoy the yoga sessions, which are based on stories and monthly themes.

Share the Road. Look Twice for Motorcyclists

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Spring is here and it is motorcycle season again in Western New York. Riders across our community are tuning up their bikes and getting ready for the open road, making this the perfect time to raise awareness of motorcycles and emphasize safety on our roads and highways.

The month of May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and I would like to share some recent initiatives that I think will help promote safety on our roadways.

First is the commitment to improving New York’s infrastructure that was made in the recently enacted state budget. Funding for transportation infrastructure increased $1.7 billion this year, resulting in a fair, regionally balanced $29 billion dollar plan that will ensure no region of our state is shortchanged. The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program, better known as CHIP’s, is funded at $503 million this year, and $1.5 billion is dedicated to local roads and bridges through the PAVE-NY and BRIDGE NY programs. These investments are absolutely necessary if we are going to maintain roads and keep them safe for motorcyclists.

At a recent rally promoting the dangers associated with distracted driving, I heard from advocates for tougher laws and listened to tragic stories from families who lost loved ones due to accidents caused by distracted drivers. We must do more in New York State to deter this irresponsible behavior behind the wheel. That is why I am pushing for approval of a bill that I support called Evan’s Law, which will stiffen penalties for distracted driving and provide law enforcement with the tools and authority to more effectively investigate these accidents at the scene.

It is very important to remember that whether you are on two wheels or driving a four-wheeled vehicle, motorcycle safety is a two-way street. Riders should take a moment at the start of each season to review all aspects of motorcycle safety. They can also benefit from safety programs offered for new riders seeking to learn the critical skills necessary to ride safely, or those for experienced cyclists looking to strengthen and reinforce safe driving practices.

Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip to Chiavetta's Greenhouse

On Tuesday, May 9th, Southtowns Catholic School Preschool 3 took a field trip to Chiavetta's Greenhouse in Angola. Mrs. Kellie Chiavetta explained what seeds do, read them a book about what flowers need to grow and had a diagram with flowers and seeds. The students each got a marigold, a pot and some dirt. After assembling their plant, they got to take it home for Mother's Day. The next event on their list was a scavenger hunt to look for flowers. Mrs. Chiavetta gave the kids a picture of the many flowers that they have in their greenhouse and the kids then set out to find them. Thank you Mrs. Chiavetta for a wonderful day! 1954 - Enjoying “those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer”!

Evans, Brant and Farnham people - young and old, will recall that Crystal Beach Amusement Park (Ontario, Canada) was an extremely popular place in the summertime!

Established late 1880’s, it remained in operation until 1989. At one time, the Evans Township Lions Club would host an Evans-Brant Community Day at Crystal Beach; in addition to ride tickets, a ticket for bus transportation to and from the Canadian beach was also available – thus encouraging a full day of enjoyment!

These photos provide a fond remembrance of those Crystal Beach days! The date was June 28th 1954: Richard Chido (of Brant) and Gloria Cellura are shown maneuvering a boat through extremely calm waters while everyone on the “Twister” seems to be having a grand old time! The youth of our towns looked forward to this event each year and without a doubt- “wish[ed] that summer could always be here.”
