From the Old Photo Album

Ready to hit the road in an 1911 E-M-F Automobile, Brant, N.Y.!

BAZAAR

VENDOR

In today’s photo we find past town of Brant resident Milford Calkins in the driver’s seat of a 1911 E-M-F automobile – license number: 63217NY. Milford was the owner of the Calkins Sawmill once located on Brant-Reservation Road, Brant, N.Y. (The current property of Chuck Joy.) Casper Taylor is seated beside him. Casper was father of Ione (Taylor) Calkins and brother of Civil War Veteran George Taylor. In the back seat are Mary Jane (Calkins) Rice (sister of Milford Calkins) and Alice Bufton. Alice was the daughter of James Bufton who was employed at the Erie Preserving Company in Fenton. Fenton was a community of canning factory families located on Milestrip Road, Brant, N.Y. during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. For those interested in the beautiful car in the phototoday considered an antique or classic - we consulted with the on-line Wikipedia site to learn a bit more: The E-M-F Company was an early American automobile manufacturer that produced automobiles during the years 1909 to 1912. The initials of the company correlated with the initials of the company’s three founders: Everitt, Metzger and Flanders. The E-M-F Company competed in the marketplace with companies of that era such as Ford, Buick, Cadillac, Maxwell and Overland. In 1911, the firm placed second in overall assemblies with 26,827 automobiles produced during that year. The 1911 E-M-F 30 touring car (pictured) had a 4 cylinder motor, a 3-speed sliding gear manual transmission and a wheelbase of 106 in. The E-M-F company name was replaced by Studebaker in 1913. Evans PBA Supports Motorcycle Safety &

Awareness

In Loving Memory of Frederick Garrasi III & Terry Addison

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Spring is here and motorcycle season is back in Western New York with riders across our community tuning up their bikes and getting ready for the open road. Since May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, now is an ideal time to raise awareness of motorcycles and emphasize safety on our roads and highways.

One of the biggest things state government can do to ensure safety on our roads is to continue to invest in our infrastructure. That is why I was so disappointed that under the new Senate Majority, Department of Transportation funding decreased $2.3 billion this year, resulting in a disproportionate amount of capital dollars being directed downstate. In my new capacity as a member of the State Senate’s Transportation Committee, my top priority will be to fight for a restoration of these funds and a fair and regionally balanced distribution so we can keep our roads safe for motorcyclists.

Unfortunately, distracted driving continues to be a serious problem in New York State where this dangerous behavior is behind an increase in the number of accidents across the state and responsible for significant increases in vehicle insurance rates. I am continuing to push for the passage of a bill I support that will stiffen penalties for distracted driving and provide law enforcement with the tools and authority to effectively investigate these accidents at the scene. This year, I hope that all drivers will be more diligent and pay attention the signs that remind us to “look twice, save a life.”

Always remember that motorcycle safety is a two-way street. Riders should take a moment at the start of each season to review all aspects of motorcycle safety. They can also benefit from safety programs offered for new riders seeking to learn the critical skills necessary to ride safely, or those for experienced cyclists looking to strengthen and reinforce safe driving practices.

For more helpful information on motorcycle safety, visit the National Safety Council at the following link - http://www.nsc.org/learn/safety-knowledge/ Pages/Motorcycle-Safety.aspx. Have a safe and enjoyable motorcycle season! Contributed by New York State Senator Chris Jacobs

From the Old Photo Album

The inscription engraved on the base of the Civil War Cannon Monument which resides in the Brant Cemetery.

The CIVIL WAR cannon, a gift from the Federal Government, had been transported by a horse drawn wagon from Angola, N.Y. to the Brant Cemetery in 1897, 32 years after the end of the war.

On May 10, 1899, several G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) veterans, led by Elbridge G. Fenton and Morgan L. Clark (both of Brant, N.Y.), met at the Brant Cemetery to build a base for the civil war cannon. The cost to build the base was recorded at $45. Ten days later the cannon was mounted on the base. Then on May 30, 1899 - Memorial Day - the James Ayer Post No. 202 hosted dedication services at the site. The inscription on the cannon base reads as follows: “ERECTED IN MEMORY OF SOLDIERS AND SAILORS OF THE WAR OF 1861-5”.

Both Elbridge and Morgan fought in the Civil War; each first enlisting in May of 1861. Elbridge Fenton was a Sergeant in Company B of the 21st New York Infantry and for his second enlistment a Private of the 9th Battalion of the 33rd Light Artillery Battery.

Morgan L. Clark was a Private with Company D of the 8th Illinois Calvary. He later enlisted as a Private, Company C of the 67th Regiment, New York Infantry (National Guard). Morgan L. Clark (1845 – 1926) is buried in the Brant Cemetery.

New Speakers at the Evans Senior Center

Evans senior center continues to recruit speakers on diverse topics, such as “The Bike Path Killer” which was presented by Linda Drajem, Ph.D., writer, poet and docent at Burchfield Penney. She provided in sighted information on Altemio Sanchez who was a modern day Jekyll and Hyde. He was known as the Bike Path Rapist until he crossed the line from rape to murder. Another educational and informative presentation was Sunshine Wellness Presentation” by Health Coach, Rebecca McNamara. It provided our seniors the opportunity to discuss their concerns in regards to a healthier lifestyle. To hear of different ways to obtain a more positive approach in there, relationships, spirituality and physical activity of daily living. These are great opportunities for Evans Community to tap in resources to provide them knowledge and different ways to obtain their personal goals.
