The Walden Krull Farm Labor Camp on Milestrip Road in Brant, N.Y. circa 1982

Throughout this farming community, the town of Brant farmers required temporary laborers to help with the farm crops. Today’s photo depicts another example of the seasonal use housing and facilities once found on the local family farms for the employees. These buildings on the Krull Farm were once located at the corner of Milestrip and Brant-Reservation Roads. Walden Krull was one of the many Brant farmers who became a member of the Producer-Canners Cooperative Inc. This cooperative was formed on March 1, 1943 in North Collins, N.Y.; purchasing the assets of the Helen Packing Co. Other Brant farmers involved were Joseph Morgano, Ward Martin, Joseph Guzzetta, George Leone, Joseph Conti, Sam Morgano, the Muscato Brothers (Charles, Anthony and Sam), Frank Russo and the Loretto Brothers (Andrew, Leonard, Conio and Joe). Neighboring town members included W. Lee Twitchel of Gowanda, Lee Foxton of Irving, the Thomas Brothers of North Collins and Russell Joy of Fredonia. The growers produced strawberries, raspberries, green and wax beans, tomatoes and grapes. The first year or two tomato paste was one of the main items packed, followed by tomato puree and tomato juice. Strawberries and raspberries were frozen in barrels. Barrels disappeared several years later when strawberries were packed in ten pound and thirty pound tins. The major item was snap beans, green and wax. In the 1950’s and 60’s quite a number of farmers left the Cooperative. The Producer-Canners Cooperative Inc. discontinued operations in 1972 when the doors closed because of the co-op’s inability to install an expansive waste disposal system that was mandated by N.Y. state. Information regarding the canning cooperative was gathered by Nina-Notaro Faltus in 1989 for the BrantFarnham Historical Society. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ____________

Southtowns Catholic School Builds Pyramids

Mrs. Kristina Dahmer's Grade 6 Social Studies class made 3D Pyramids using a limited number of supplies. The students needed to make their pyramid stable, at least 12" tall, contain three facts about Ancient Egypt written in their own form of hieroglyphics and it had to have an object suspended from the middle of the pyramid that would be something a Pharaoh would need in the afterlife. After the Pyramids were completed, the students measured and calculated the surface area of the Pyramid. This is part of the GEAR UP Design program, that is part of STREAM. The project incorporates a multiple subject area content and pushes students to think "outside the box" to come up with creative solutions to problems. It was a fantastic way to wrap up our unit on Ancient Egypt and have the kids show off their newfound knowledge. Thank you to the English family for your donation of supplies!
