Schmidt is a school where we “lift each other up, and never put each other down.” Jordyn is A.J. Schmidt’s Student of the Month for February. levied and collected as required by law. Adoption of this budget requires a tax levy increase of 1.88% which does not exceed the statutory tax levy increase limit of 2.54%. PROPOSITION NO. 2 Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit: RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: three (3) full size diesel or electric powered 71-passenger school buses at an estimated maximum cost of $121,168.10 each; one (1) 30-passenger gasoline or electric powered school bus at an estimated cost of $65,154.80; one (1) 24-passenger 5-wheel chair position gasoline or electric powered wheel chair school bus at an estimated cost of $76,199.12; and one (1) 7-passenger gasoline or electric powered Ford Expedition at an estimated cost of $65,190.00; for a total aggregate maximum cost of $570,048.22; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost.
Southtowns Catholic Field Trip to Buffalo Museum of Science
Mrs. Chelsea Ebert’s Grade 4 class had a STREAM Field Trip to the Buffalo Museum of Science. The students are learning about “how animals adapt to suit their environment.” After spending the morning looking how at how bugs adapt, they had free time to tour the museum. Lake Shore Middle School Students Raise Money for Sudan
Seventh graders at Lake Shore Middle School read A Long Walk to Water in the beginning of the school year and were moved by the true story of Salva Dut, a Lost Boy from South Sudan. When they learned that Salva began an organization called Water for South Sudan, they wanted to make a contribution to its mission to bring clean water to people from his homeland. The Seventh Grade Student Government members organized a can and bottle drive to raise money to donate to this worthy cause. In addition, they made the donation in memory of their beloved classmate, Andrew Masse, who passed away in December. Andrew’s family will receive a letter from Water for South Sudan indicating that the donation was made in Andrew’s honor. Local Students Awarded at WNY Safety Conference
Eden seniors Miriam Hoelscher and Angeleah Lograsso were each awarded a scholarship from the Western New York Safety Conference at a luncheon at the Seneca Niagara Convention Center. Applicants were required to write an essay about the importance of occupational safety and health. Four winners were chosen from 84 Western New York seniors submitting essays, and although it is rare to have multiple winners from one school, Angeleah and Miriam were both chosen for their outstanding entries! This particular presentation was to inform the community on the adaptations, behaviors that make Owls such excellent hunters of the night. It was such an informative presentation that had the audience completely engaged and asking several questions about Zelda and areas that the Audubon protect in our own backyard and surrounding areas. The National Audubon Society protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow, throughout the America using science advocacy, education, and on-theground conservation. Circa 1942; Cosmo Maley with his daughters Rose and Carolyn on their farm in Farnham, N.Y.
It was only a little over 75 years ago when people from our community relied on horsepower to help farm their land. In 1942, Cosmo Maley took a break from farming with his horse, to pose with his daughters Rose and Carolyn for a photograph. Cosmo’s father Charles Maley along with Pasquale Lomanto had purchased the farm land on Church Street and Mud Road in Farnham, N.Y. on September 30, 1919. (Mud Road today is known as Commercial Street and Brant-Farnham Road.) The Erie County property deed recorded the previous owners as Pietro and Congetta Villa. Cosmo’s son Charles still resides in the family homestead. Charles’ daughter Sandy Meli submitted this photo of her grandfather and aunts when we were gathering information for Farnham’s 125th Anniversary book in 2017. Lake Shore High School Winter Bowling Club
Lake Shore High School kicked off its Annual Winter Bowling Program this past January at Evans’ own Chick’s Lanes. This has become a fun tradition for the high school as over 50 student came each week. While there, student not only get to bowl two games, and have delicious Jimmy’s Pizza (which is housed in Chicks), but they also were able to make new friends and have fun in the dark, winter months. Rural Transit Service Recognizes Dedicated Volunteers
On Wednesday, April 10th Rural Transit Service recognized over 130 volunteers at their annual luncheon held at The Columns in Elma. Rural Transit Service is a non-profit transportation organization providing safe, affordable and reliable transportation to seniors, low income and disabled residents to allow them to maintain a happier, healthier more independent lifestyle. Rural Transit’s success is predicated on the commitment of their volunteers, including drivers, dispatchers and driver aides; providing the transportation and scheduling. In twenty nine years, due to the increasing need, Rural Transit has expanded its service area from two towns, with approximately one dozen volunteers to twenty five municipalities throughout Erie County with the help of over one hundred thirty volunteers and the need continues. Lake Shore Music Department Brings Home Honors
Recently, the Lake Shore Music Department traveled to Orlando Florida to participate in OrlandoFest!, a national music festival where music programs from across the country compete against one another. The music tour took place from April 3rd through April 8th and included band, chorus, and for the first time, orchestra On route Orlando, the Music Department stopped to take a tour of the University of Florida, and even had a chance to sit in on collegiate rehearsals. During their stay in Orlando, students were able to participate in two educational workshops focusing on S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Science) that were based on two of the attractions at Universal Studios. Students had an opportunity to learn about the Transformers and Skull Island the Reign of Kong and how the ride operates using coordinate systems, plot vectors, and the six degrees of freedom. Students also were able to attend a Blue Man Group Concert and enjoy the Al Capone’s dinner theatre. Music Department students also had the opportunity to participate in Universal Orlando Youth STARS Performance Program ‘Sound Design: Music and the Art of Foley” workshop. There they recorded music for “Despicable Me” and “The Lorax” and also had an opportunity to put their music to the movies. Several students were selected to do voice over work and sound effects for the characters in the movie. The final product was a DVD recording with our students’ voices and music with scenes from the original motion pictures. All three ensembles, Symphonic Band, Mixed Chorus, and Symphonic Orchestra competed on Saturday April 6th, and all three ensembles placed first in each of their divisions. The band also won Overall Grand Champion – with the highest score, and senior-trumpet player Gary Colson, won Top Instrumental Soloist at the festival. This is the tenth music tour that the department planned by the High School Music Department, and the first tour that included all three genres: Chorus, Orchestra, and Band. Each group had to use the Solubility Curve to figure out how to make a super saturated solution of sugar & water. When the sugar was dissolved, they placed the skewer into the solution and as the water cooled, the sugar was attracted to the stick to form rock candy. LS Leadership in Action Participates in Digital Citizenship Summit
On Friday, March 15th, the Lake Shore Leadership in Action Class participated in the planning of our district’s Inaugural Digital Citizenship Summit. This was a conference where teachers and students, K-12, worked together to become digitally literate and safe. Students taught teachers how to use tools online. Specifically, students in the Leadership in Action Class planned a Digital Carnival where teachers were able to choose a variety of stations to learn from. Students talked to Lake Shore teachers about digital citizenship, what are security dangers of online sites, what is malicious, online behaviors and how to proactively combat them, and lastly, they learned what to do online. They showed how social media and school sites can help educate others in positive ways and spread love to those all around. Celebrating Brant’s Quarto-Sequennial Anniversary in 1964 at the Brant Town Park
It was a mere 55 years ago that the town of Brant celebrated its 125th anniversary. March 25, 1964 marked the actual date, but the festivities were held months later on Labor Day weekend. The celebration, in addition to rides, concessions, games, music, displays and exhibits, included a crowd of fun-loving townspeople dressed in “era” clothing. This enormous party was held at the Brant recreation area (formerly known as the Brant Labor Camp) on BrantFarnham Road. The building we see in the background of the photo was replaced by a brick building in later years. An amazing parade kicked off the festivities at 1PM on Sunday, September 6, 1964. The parade marshal was Leonard Guzzetta. It was the Brant supervisor Samuel Ralabate who gave the “Welcome address”. “The National Anthem” was sung by a then 18 year old Clint Holmes, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Bottoms. Clint Holmes, as many are aware, is a Farnham, N.Y. native who went on to become and still is a famous singer/performer in Las Vegas, N.V. There were a multitude of speakers and guests that day, as, in that same 125th anniversary year, the town was also dedicating it’s new park. It became known as the Brant Town Park through a “Name the Park” contest. In addition to those previously mentioned, speakers, presenters, and guests also listed in the program book were: George Heron, President of the Seneca Nation of Indians, Robert Galloway, Leonard Pinker, John C. Walker, Carlton Winters, Richard Horwood, Clarence Beuzenburg, Herman Ciminesi, Christian Militello, Harold Wasmund, Fred Brinkman, Leah “Flossie” Mirusso, S.V. Martorana, Frances L.C. Muscato, Rev. William Seibert, and Rev. David Owl. The event also included awards to senior citizens and parade participants, a performance by the Gowanda Barbershop Octet, a baseball game “old timers vs. youth of the town”, badminton, volley ball, horseshoe pitching, and tug of war on the grounds. Chiavetta’s barbeque dinners were available and there was free square dancing with music by THE BRANT HILLBILLIES, under the direction of Woodie Stearns. The caller was Howard Hurley. It certainly appears that the residents of the town of Brant enjoyed their 125th anniversary year, by planning a day - filled to the brim - with plenty of good, old fashioned fun!
