Students Make Light Up Bugs

Our students were so excited to show their little handmade light up bugs they made in library class with Librarian Anne Maggio. They were made out of aluminium foil and pipe cleaners. It was fun to watch them light up. Pictured in the back row from left Nathan Eberl, Caleb Tanner, Giuseppe Gullo-Faiardo, Ambrose Emke and Jack Garton. “Farnham Field Days” was once a yearly event sponsored by the Farnham Volunteer Fire Department. Our historical society has a few photos from this particular year of the event (1940ish) in its possession. Some of the photos we have depict a parade down Commercial Street in the village. The parade included the Farnham Volunteer Fire Dept. marching unit and the Farnham Ladies Drum Corp., with majorette Beverly (Ahlers) Wasmund leading the way.

The two photos we chose for today, provide a glimpse of a simpler time. In each of the photos, a member of the Farnham Volunteer Fire Dept. is shown dressed in his marching uniform, which consisted of a hat, white shirt, dark tie and white shoes. If we look closely at the bottom left corner of the one photo, we can see the brick road of Commercial Street. The brick building in the background advertising “Ice Cream” is Schwert’s Store which was located on the corner. Built in 1902, this beautiful building still stands today. It is currently owned by Mr. and Mrs. Alphonso Butlak and is now a private residence.

It appears that much of the “field day” fun included soap box derby races with racing down Railroad Avenue towards Commercial Street. Soap box derbies began around 1933 and according to the Smithsonian.com article written by Paul Dickson (May 1995): “soap box derbies are spin-offs from a mix of automobile racing and downhill sledding on a Flexible Flyer. Boys and girls have a passion for anything that travels super fast – even if only down a hill under the power of gravitational pull.” Railroad Avenue in Farnham does have an incline, so we bet that must have provided plenty of speed!

Collecting Sap for Maple Syrup in Brant, N.Y.

A yearly activity for the Friend and Lemke families is making maple syrup for their own use throughout the year. This threegeneration crew begins the process of gathering the sap during February and March, from the woods located on the Friend farm in the town of Brant. In the earlier sap gathering years, oh about 25 years or more ago, (at that time it was only a twogeneration crew), Pete, the beloved family draft horse was part of the group; pulling the mud-boat and transporting sap buckets and kids to the woods and back home again. Today, a tractor and homemade sled are used for the hauling requirements. It is warm days and cool nights that will keep the sap running steady, and with this combination the syrup season can last for several weeks. Larger maple syrup operations use pumps and plastic hoses or bags to gather their sap, but this hardy bunch sticks with the traditional method of collecting - lots of taps, buckets, muscle and time! And, it sure does take plenty of time -and dedication- to tap all the trees, hang all the buckets and then check the buckets daily (sometimes twice a day). The next steps involve; collecting, carrying, transporting, boiling, testing and bottling the sap. Anyone who has canned fruits /vegetables will recognize and appreciate the work involved. And now, with Great Grandma Friend living on the farm for the last 15 years, she helps out too by sharing her canning expertise! (Hmmm…this actually makes four-generations of help!) Outside in the two-sided wood shed, the sap is boiled in a stainless steel evaporator pan over a wood fire. (Wood that is split on the farm of course!) The cooking time goes by faster when friends and neighbors stop by to watch and chat, as the sweet smelling steam rolls off the top of the boiling sap. It takes a whopping 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of pure maple syrup, but, when it’s all done, and every sticky pot, pan and utensil is washed - the taste of that delicious syrup is definitely worth the effort… and besides all that...it’s a fun family tradition!

Raising the roof on the Brant #I School circa 1910

From The Old Photo Album

Samuel Butts, one of the earliest settlers of Brant, N.Y., donated the land on Brant-Angola Road for the town of Brant District #1 School. It was a one-room school, heated with a pot-bellied stove. In 1906, the original school building was sold to Mr. John Mirruso and moved to a location on Brant Reservation Road.

In 1907, the “new” school was built on the original lot donated by Samuel Butts. This time it was a two room school. Later, in 1910 as the need for more rooms developed, the roof was raised and the school was transformed into a two story, four classroom structure. This structure, easily recognizable, is still standing today and is currently an apartment building owned by the Pero family. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society

From the Old Photo Album

The Brant Strawberry Festival was the pride of Brant, N.Y. for 14 years; from 1956 - 1970. It was a three-day event filled with carnival rides, parades and various activities, contests and of course, plenty of strawberries! It was held on Peter and Angela Pero’s land as well as the Brant Fire Company grounds.

One year, a news article boasted that 4,680 quarts of strawberries were sold at the festival grounds during its three-day duration. The Brant Strawberry Festival parades consisted of many ornate floats, one of which can be seen in the photo above. “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” Ecclesiastes 9:10

Some wise soul once said, “Some succeed because they are destined to, but most succeed because they are determined to. ” Think of the determined and don't lose hope:

Handicap him and you have a Walter Scott. Put him in prison and you have a John Bunyan. Bury him in the snows of Valley Forge and you have a George Washington. Have him born in abject poverty and you have a Lincoln. Load him with bitter racial prejudice and you have a Disraeli. Afflict him with asthma until as a boy he lies choking in his father's arms and you have a Theodore Roosevelt. Stab him with rheumatic pains until for years he cannot sleep without an opiate and you have a Steinmetz. Put him in the grease pit of a locomotive roundhouse and you have a Walter P. Chrysler. Make him second fiddle in an obscure South American orchestra and you have a Toscanini.

Enters Rain Barrel Contest

The Erie County Department of Environment & Planning invited all schools & youth groups in Erie and Niagara counties to participate in a rain barrel painting contest with a theme focusing on stormwater pollution prevention or recycling rainwater. Southtowns Catholic School put together a club to submit a rain barrel. With a group of students from grades 3 to 7, we designed and painted our barrel. When it was finished, each student from preschool 3 to grade 8 placed their thumbprints on the barrel and they were turned into fish. The rain barrel painting contest awards ceremony will be held at 12 noon on Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 2018 in the auditorium at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Pictured: Shaley Fish & Jacob Barney.
