With sincere appreciation I extend a heartfelt thank you to the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce for recognizing me as the 2017 Citizen of the Year! Thank you for entrusting to me this most incredible honor! I am truly thrilled to be in the company of all of the past recipients … and my goodness – what a list! Thank you to all those who played a role in the nomination, selection, dinner and presentation. In addition I would like to thank all the politicians; local, county, federal and state, who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the evening’s event.
From the very depth of my heart I would especially like to thank my husband Bill, my family, relatives and friends and all who attended the ceremony on my behalf. Thank you also to those who made time to send an encouraging note or card, a phone call, or those who - when they saw me – stopped to tell me how happy they are for me. Each of these thoughtful sentiments have meant so much to me. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by so many good, kindhearted and caring people. Our world and our community are extra special because of each of you. I am overwhelmed and humbled at the outpouring of love and support. Thank you all!

C. H. Berns - Socony Gasoline Station was once located on Erie Rd. at Lotus Point Rd., Farnham, N.Y. (Where the Farnham water tower stands today.)
Town of Brant resident, David Berns is the 86 year old grandson of Charles H. and although he resides in Brant, he spent much of his life in the village of Farnham. Another grandson - Charles, who is a cousin of David, currently lives in the original Charles H. Berns homestead.
In early March 2018, David shared some information with us about his grandfather, which we will now share with you. Charles Henry Berns was born in 1877. His wife was Rose (Sager) Berns. Together they farmed the Berns family farm which was (and still is) located on the Erie and Lotus Point Roads in the village of Farnham and town of Brant. This was a dairy farm, but the family also raised produce such as apples, tomatoes, grapes and sweet peas. The fruits and vegetables were sold to the Erie Preserving Company which was located on Railroad Avenue in the village of Farnham. The 1897 assessment roles for the town of Brant, do confirm Charles Berns as having 75 acres in lot 84 and 1/2 acre in lot 83. As a side note - the total property taxes in 1897 were $13.81 and according to this record book, the Berns family also had a dog, which resulted in an additional tax of $0.50!
During our visit with David, we learned that in addition to farming, Charles H. also owned and managed a gasoline service station. He told us that the service station had two gas pumps and that it was located where the Farnham water tower stands today. David reminisced that at that time, Erie Road was only a two lane road. He recalled that apple trees were along side of the station and that there were a few picnic tables interspersed among the apple trees. Back in the day, it was considered fun and fashionable to pack a picnic lunch and take a Sunday drive out to “the country” for a family get-together. This picnic area provided a quiet setting for just such a relaxing and lazy afternoon. Often customers would stop to fill up, before heading down the Lotus Point Road. Most would be journeying towards those sandy beaches along the Lake Erie shoreline, or possibly heading to the ever popular baseball games, which were played down at the lake area.
David couldn’t recall exactly when the service station was removed to make room for the Farnham water tower, however, we believe that it must have been prior to September 1932. We say this because the historical society has a letter, addressed to Mark E. Crawford, Mayor of Farnham from Chicago Bridge and Iron Works, dated September 27, 1932. This letter included a Bill of Lading for steel material to be used for the Village of Farnham water storage tank. The letter states that the material was contained in two train cars (Erie 8915 and Erie 9564) and it was to arrive and be unloaded at the B & LE NYC tracks, Farnham, N.Y.
Our hour with David flew by and we were delighted that he took the time to sit and talk with us. Mr. David Berns has an abundance of history packed Farnham memories to share and we look forward to our next chat!

Easter Stories:
The Resurrection of Christ From the Dead
"And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him." - Mark 16:1-6

Lake Shore Leadership Students Learn About Leadership in the Emergency Services Field
Town of Evans resident and Lake Shore alumnus, Tiger Schmittendorf, recently spoke to the Lake Shore High School Leadership in Action about his career in the emergency services field and what leadership means to him. For many years, Schmittendorf served as the Erie County Deputy Fire Coordinator and also spent 37 years as a volunteer with the Evans Center Fire Company. He spoke about why he chose to work in the safety industry and the leadership demands that come with it. Schmittendorf spoke about empathy in the EMS field and its role in being a good and effective leader. Students were fascinated by the exciting and scary experiences that he related and were allowed to ask questions on a personal and professional level. Schmittendorf let the students know that although he has retired from his position with the county, he continues to travel across the nation to speak to emergency service groups about his knowledge and experiences. He left the students with the notion that leadership roles are a life-long calling.
The Lake Shore Leadership in Action class would like to thank Mr. Schmittendorf for his time and knowledge, and wish him well as he continues to educate emergency personnel across the country.

From the Old Photo Album
1982 Photo of the DeCarlo Farm labor camp. The camp was once located on Mileblock Road, Brant, N.Y.
In an earlier article we highlighted the need for town of Brant farmers to find temporary laborers to help plant, cultivate and harvest the fruit and vegetable crops. Seasonal use housing and facilities were available on almost all of the local family farms for the workers. Typical “farm camps” would consist of one or more small, simple “shacks” or longer buildings with separated, individual living quarters. This photo of the DeCarlo farm shows us one example of a camp layout using a combination of housing styles. This photo was taken in 1982, after the buildings were no longer in use. The buildings are not there today.
