The Town of Evans is receiving applications for a Full-Time Code Enforcement Officer. Applications in the form of a resume and cover letter are due to the Supervisor’s office, 8787 Erie Road, Angola, New York 14006, no later than 11:00 a.m. on March 26, 2018.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

Candidates must have successfully completed the requirements of Basic Code Enforcement Training Program established by the minimum Standards for Code Enforcement Personnel (19NYCRR Part 1208) in the State of New York as a Code Enforcement Official and satisfied annual in-service training requirements. The applicant, if selected, will be required to take the Erie County Civil Service Code Enforcement Officer written Exam and score within the top three (3) scores in the municipality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test: A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two or four year college or university with an Associate’s degree in engineering, construction, fire protection, architectural technology, or related field; or B. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years of experience in the building trades, engineering, architecture, building inspection, public health inspection, fire-fighting or fire inspection; or C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

A Code Enforcement Officer makes inspections of building construction and repair within a municipality and enforcing the provisions of local building and zoning laws, and under the general direction of the municipal legislative body or administrative officer, is responsible for enforcing state and municipal standards for the construction of all buildings and equipment therein, including standards for materials used and for safety and sanitary conditions; reviews, checks and passes on plans and specifications submitted with building permit applications for compliance with building code, the zoning ordinance and applicable laws prior to issuing permits; inspects buildings and structures in the process of construction or repair for compliance with approved plans and specifications of all requirements of applicable ordinances and laws, including New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code; issues building permits and furnishes the prescribed certificates of occupancy upon application; explains the requirements of the local building code, local zoning ordinances and the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code law and other applicable laws to building contractors and to the general public; provides for removal of illegal or unsafe conditions and secures the necessary safeguards during construction; orders unsafe conditions in existing structures to be removed and arranges for condemnation notices to owners and builders of improper or hazardous structures; inspects existing buildings and structures to insure their conformity with safety standards and elimination of fire hazards; may conduct investigation of source, origin and circumstances of fires and fire prevention code; investigates complaints and assists in prosecuting violations of the building and fire prevention code and zoning ordinances; prepares reports and keeps related records. Mrs. Jennifer Hill’s Grade 2 class celebrated Dr. Seuss’ Birthday with a STREAM project. The children read the book and then watched a video on the SMART Board on how to make it. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the students in Mrs. Hill 2nd grade at Southtowns Catholic School built Rainbow Bridges. The students had to work together to create a rainbow bridge that would hold the heaviest pot of gold. They were only allowed to use 8 pipe cleaners and play dough. Lehley’s Wagon & Carriage Industry in Brant, N.Y. about 1885

In 1876, Mr. George Lehley managed a wagon and carriage industry in the town of Brant. His shop was located on the current site of the Memorial Park at the Brant four corners (next to where the Brant Post Office stands today). According to historical records, Mr. Lehley hired ten or fifteen men who worked steadily building buggies, surreys, cutters, wagons and parts. When the automobile was introduced as a new method of transportation and manufactured carriages and wagons were no longer needed, Mr. Lehley and his son Frank operated a hardware store on the same lot.

George Lehley was the Brant Town Clerk in 1880 and then again from 1884 through 1890. He was also elected as the Town of Brant Supervisor for eight consecutive years, from 1890 - 1897.

The Roadside Inn, Brant, N.Y. - 1935Charles Pero standing on the front porch.

Although it stands quiet today, the second building on the right on Brant Reservation Road, (just as you pass THE traffic light at the Brant four corners) has quite a bit of history behind it. The building’s genealogy is defined in our local history books as follows: “...Julius Lehley built “another hotel” about 1885. In 1889, Emma Lehley owned the hotel, succeeded by Fred Johnt, Peter Reifel and August Middlemire. It was known then as the Union Hotel, with a barroom on the main floor. In 1900, Frank Gruener operated the hotel and William Ahlers had it in 1903. Peter Pero, Sr. purchased the barroom and hotel in 1915. In 1933, Peter Pero Jr. and his wife, Angela, converted the hotel to a steakhouse and added bowling lanes in 1942.” To update the history, we can add Lenny Pero and Nicki (Pero) Wilson as managers of this establishment. As you can see, the Pero family has owned the business and the building since 1915 –over 100 years! During the Pero years, it has been known as The Roadside Inn, Pete Pero’s Steak House and Bowling Lanes and then as Pero’s Restaurant. This now silent structure, was at one time quite a lively establishment and a “hub” of our community! nt Supervisor for eight consecutive years, from 1890 - 1897.
