PROJECT KEEP EVANS CLOTHED AND FED Most Precious Blood Church is continuing to conduct a clothing, food and paper drive. The current pandemic continues to affect many Americans including many residing in our own Town of Evans. Loss of jobs and income, loss of housing and loss of life even recently are effects of this horrible virus. We have learned from Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) that each year after the winter Holidays the many efforts to provide assistance for those in need are not as plentiful. Consequently we will be collecting any clean clothing, dry or canned foods and paper goods with the goal to restock the shelves at OGN. Although this effort will probably never end, this current publicized project will start now and run through the Lenten season ending Easter Sunday April 4. All collections will be turned over to OGN for distribution to families in need and residing in the Town of Evans free of charge. We will accept all outer clothing (children’s sizes are very popular) and dry/canned goods with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Baby food and diapers are in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels, and toilet paper so these will be collected also. til his retirement at age 57. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Bette” (Gabalski) and they raised their family. Steve was an avid sportsman who loved to fish and hunt alongside his children, Jeffrey (Ann Margaret), John (Amelia) and Jane M. (Jack) Brueckl. He was a past member of the Old Town Rod and Gun Club, having founded it in 1954. Throughout his life it was Lake Erie that brought him solitude. Raising his family along its sandy shores or trolling its azure waves for walleye, nowhere was Steve more comfortable than when he was near. While he enjoyed travelling the country with Bette, it was always the fresh waters of the lake and the warm spirits of the people in his community that called him home. As a result he and Bette became pillars of the Roat Acres Community Association for over 50 years. He served as both vice president and president for years while Bette served as secretary and treasurer. His passion, however was in his 7 grandchildren: Clark, Drew and Jay Brueckl and Quentin, Henry, Elizabeth and Jack Jarzynski. Their visits and stories about their accomplishments nourished him throughout later years. Until the end, he remained humble and appreciative of all his friends and family who cared for him. A Mass of Christian Burial, was held Monday, March 15, 2021 at 12 Noon in Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, NY. Arrangements by Addison Funeral Home, Inc.

Marie A. MacDowell (nee Kleparek)

Marie A. MacDowell of Angola, died peacefully on March 14, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. Marie was a funny, kind, and caring person who thought of everyone except herself. She touched the lives of her friends, coworkers, and students at Lake Shore Schools, where she mainly tolerated the less than well behaved. She married Warren (Wally) MacDowell and raised three boys (Scott, Jeff, Ian). She loved her brother David and his family. Her dog (Bert) will finally be reunited with her in heaven. She loved gardening and using the dust buster. Hated sump pumps, stink bugs and occasional critter that made its way in the attic. An accomplished shark fisherman. She competed in the 1958 National Spelling Bee, attended Jamestown Community College, and loved her Grandchildren (Zach, Madison, Emma, Bailey, MacKenna, Farrah). She is looking forward to finally meeting Alex Trebek. In lieu of flowers, Marie urges you take a friend to lunch. Arrangements entrusted to the Addison Funeral Home, Inc.

The American flag is raised as AMERICA is sung at the Farnham Grammar School ground breaking ceremony

The old wooden Farnham Grammar School (Brant District No. 5) located on the corner of Commercial Street and Erie Road, was completely destroyed by fire in the middle of the night on January 14, 1946. The very next morning, Principal Russell Everhart and Mr. Wallace Ormsby, District Superintendent, asked Pastor Voss of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church for the use of the Church’s Parish Hall for classrooms. The response was “Yes” and thus grades 1, 2, 3 and 4 (about 70 children) attended classes in this hall. Additional classes were held in the Farnham Fire Hall. Almost immediately, the planning began for a new school building on the same lot as the previous school. Records show that by September 1947 Farnham District No. 5 students had a brand new brick school building, Ground breaking ceremony for the building of the to replace their old wooden schoolFarnham Grammar School circa 1946 house. The one floor plan had rooms for eight grades, a combination gymnasium and assembly room, nurse’s office, a kitchen, Principal’s office, a library and a special kindergarten room. The photos today are of the official ground breaking ceremonies in anticipation of the new approximately $300,000 brick elementary school. Three people are identified in the one photo (from our view L-R): six year old Carol G. Voss, first grade pupil, is in front holding the American flag with Robert K. Glass to her right holding the handle of the shovel. To the right of Mr. Glass is Charles H. Berns, chairman of the School Board. Farnham Mayor Louis DeMarco, District Supt. Wallace W. Ormsby, Mr. Glass and Mr. Berns were among the speakers that day. The American flag was raised as AMERICA was sung. On July 3rd, 1979 the “new” brick Farnham School closed. The building was demolished in 2007. A Dollar General store is currently located on that corner lot. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society __________

The Angola High School was located in the building that is today recognized as the John T. Waugh Elementary School on High Street, in the village of Angola, N.Y. In early years this was the school The Angola High School, building where all High Street, Angola, N.Y. students in the Evans-Brant communities completed their post grammar school learning. The following information on the Angola High School graduations was found in the ANGOLA HISTORY section of the 1929 issues of the local newspaper known as “The Angola Record”. W. M. Landon and Son were editors and publishers. · 1888 - The Angola High School held its fifth commencement with three graduates. · 1893 - The Angola High School graduated six students. · 1898 - There were five graduates from the A.H.S. · 1903 - Seven graduated from A.H.S. · 1908 - A class of five graduate from A.H.S. · 1913 - Sixteen graduate from A.H.S. · 1923 - Twelve graduate from A.H.S. · 1928 - The 44th commencement of the Angola High School with fourteen graduates. In the 1950’s the Lake Shore Central School District was formed, resulting in the gradual consolidation of the numerous, smaller elementary schools. A new high school was built, located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, N.Y. It was named the Lake Shore High School. Per Wikipedia the Lake Shore High School “serves students in the Town of Evans and Village of Angola, the Town of Brant and a portion of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation”. Continuing on with the topics of high school and graduation; as we all know, the year of 2020 proved to be a trying year in countless ways. All of the traditional high school activities and ceremonies were either cancelled or limited with restrictions. In order to recognize the 212 seniors for their efforts of completing their high school year, a small group of June 7, 2020; A Lake mothers of the graduating Shore High School senior & seniors organized a GRADUfamily participating in the ATION SENIOR CELEBRAGraduation Celebration Parade, Main Street Angola TION PARADE! The plan was to have the high school seniors parade through town of Evans in decorated vehicles. On a beautiful and sunny June 7, 2020 at 3pm, the parade began at Evangola State Park. From there the parade turned left down Lake Shore Road to Lake Street, a right on Lake Street, took them to Main Street in the Village of Angola. They traveled left on Main Street to Beach Road. Another left brought them to and then ended at the Lake Shore High School for their farewell. The event was a success with almost all seniors and their families participating! People along the parade route were encouraged to (AND DID) decorate their yards with signs and balloons etc. to let the high school seniors of 2020 know the community was proud of their accomplishments.
