According to various news clippings from 1928, “the Angola Airport was located two miles south of the village of Angola on Hardpan Road” in Brant, N.Y. “The field consisted of 139 acres and had a main runway of 2,700 feet with a cross runway of 1,500 feet. The hangar had space for six planes and was equipped with gas and mechanics services. The field was bought and built and promoted by the Eastern Flying Clubs, Inc. with P.L. Schwert, president of the Bank of Angola, as its leading factor. Other officers were: A. P. Bundy, vice president; L.A. House, secretary and George Peck, treasurer.”

Over 10,000 people attended the dedication ceremony celebrated on September 9th, 1928. This photo was included in a collection of items once belonging to John Walker, donated to the historical society by his daughter Janet (Walker) Reger.

The project will include an all new storm drain system to replace the original 1908 tile drain lines, new gutters, some curbing, driveway aprons, new signage, burm seeding and a sidewalk from Beverly Drive to Beach Road.

Lake Shore Celebrates Bus Drivers and Bus Aides

The Lake Shore Central School District recently celebrated some of its hardest working employees – our transportation department. As part of the national “Love the Bus” campaign, students recognized their daily bus drivers and aides with personal artwork and letters.

At Highland Elementary, students wrote notes and stories about their drivers and aides. The event was culminated with an assembly where the transportation staff were presented with books made up of each student’s writing. The students cheered for their drivers and aides and after the assembly, they enjoyed a light breakfast.

“This is a wonderful way for our children to show how much they care about the people who get them safely to and from school,” said Highland Principal Colleen Politowski.

“Driving and monitoring a school bus is not an easy job, and our dedicated transportation team was thrilled to be recognized and celebrated.”

Love the Bus is a month-long celebration held every February. The event celebrates the importance and role of the yellow school bus in education, with a particular focus on thanking school bus drivers for safely transporting more than 25 million children to and from school every day.

The event helps raise awareness and appreciation for the experience of riding the bus to and from school, and recognizes the diverse group of professionals whose daily efforts make the yellow school bus part of the fabric of American life.

• ANOTHER RECENT PLUS for the Village saw a 30 year old, 100 foot ladder truck replaced for the Villlage Fire Department. The “newer” ladder truck was purchased from a small city in Southern Ohio that was downsizing their roster of equipment. It will serve Angola for at least 10 years.

Lake Shore Technology Students Place at Local Competition Applied Engineering and Technology students participate in Bridge Design Contest

Lake Shore High School Applied Engineering and Technology students enrolled in CADD, Advanced CADD, and Technical Applications classes recently participated in the annual Association for Bridge Construction and Design Contest. Technology teachers Mr. Frew and Mr. Panfil supervised the engineering and construction activities.

Over 130 students from Western New York constructed bridges made of only lightweight balsa wood and glue, designed to support a 100-pound test load and put them head-to-head at the Classics V Banquet Facility in Amherst, NY. Participating students carefully studied the competition regulations while designing bridges which would handle the stresses and strains of the testing equipment.

During the event, competitors had the opportunity to speak with engineers regarding designs and career opportunities. They also had the opportunity to network with University of Buffalo engineering students. The majority of the Lake Shore-designed bridges did not fail under the 100 pound test load.

Gillian Barclay placed first for overall engineering design and construction and Daniel Slotman took second overall for efficiency. His bridge weighed only 125 grams, but supported a test load of 274 pounds!

Additionally, David Pignone, Jayke Smith, Jacob DeAngelis, Owen Glose, and Kaliana Palmer had designs that placed in the top 25.

A majorette leads the way in this 1958 Brant Strawberry Festival parade.

There is certainly something exciting about a parade!

The bands, the marching units, horses and carts, unique floats, fire trucks and antique cars. Spectators on each side of the street enjoy the continuous line of music, fun and surprise! It may appear as though it’s easy to arrange and promote, but even encouraging people to participate is not an easy task. Planning a parade is and was a huge undertaking and the volunteers have plenty to do to ensure it’s success. Stop for a minute to think about this piece of history - the Brant Strawberry Festivals had a parade on EACH DAY of the three day festival! There was a Friday evening Fireman’s Parade, a Saturday Youth Day Junior Parade and yet another parade on Sunday which was recorded in the program books as “Queens Day”.

The 1967 program booklet lists the parade committees as “Boots” Hill and Ned Cox for Friday and Daniel Thomas and Gary Walters for Saturday. Sunday’s committee included John and Harlene Fox, Clarence Maiers, Bill Sauers, Anthony Fricano, Bill Fricano and John Walker.

A partial listing of the 1967 parade’s marching winners were recorded as: Best American Senior Drum Corps: 1stDunkirk Patriots, 2nd-Lake View Shoreliners and 3rd-Big Tree Emeralds. Best Jr. Drum Corps (American or Canadian): 1st-Angola Women’s Drum Corps and 2nd-North Evans Rhythmettes. School Band: 1st-Lancaster Junior High School and 2nd-North Collins School Band. Non-Drum Corp Color Guard: 1st-Newcomb-Long Post, American Legion, 2nd-Evans Township Post, VFW and 3rd-Depew VFW. The NYPENN Judging and Parade Association judged the marching and musical units. It appears there was plenty of competition from all over!

In addition to the parades, the festival’s three days were jam packed with back to back events. In 1967, the Festival committee listed over 55 volunteer chairpersons that were assigned to more than 24 areas of responsibility. The Strawberry Festival years - quite an amazing era!
