St. Jude, helper of hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. In Memoriam

to our dearest Father, JOSEPH S. CERVOLA JR., who passed away February 18, 2011

Our time on this Earth ends at some point; we just never know when. You were so well respected and one of the finest men. Time has been passing, as your grandchildren all grow. We think of our “Joe Buck” when we see the white snow. Your life was a blessing and fond memories a treasure. Still loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. We all love you now as we did back then.

We pray and hope that we can see you again. Eight long years have passed since you have been gone. But we are at peace to know you’ve been reunited with your only son.

WE LOVE AND MISS YOU WITH ALL OF OUR HEARTS! Sadly missed by Brother Ron, Patti, Karen, Terri, and our entire family!

From the Old Photo Album

We hope everyone is enjoying the 1958 Brant Strawberry Festival Parade photos donated by the family of the Russell and Marie Dispense to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society. This photo was taken while standing across from the Brant Fire hall. We get a glimpse of the announcer’s bandstand just ahead, towering over the crowd of parade watchers. It was located between the fire hall and the now Pero building which sits at the intersection of Routes 249 and 323. The intersection is also referred to as the Brant four corners. The Brant fire hall had been dedicated on Fireman’s Day of the 1957 Strawberry Festival and the corner building (which at one time was a store and a Post Office) was sometimes used as the Strawberry Festival Headquarters. Winter

Pet Safety Tips for Winter

additional challenges when you’re a pet owner. We wanted to share with you

our tips and tricks to make winter pet care a breeze!

Be sure to wipe their paws: On winter walks, your dog’s paws can step in various chemicals like salt, antifreeze, or de-icers. Use warm water and soap to clean your pet’s feet as soon as you come inside. You can also purchase pet-safe salt for your porches and sidewalks to decrease toxic risk. We have pet foot balm for sale at Golden Paws Pet Hotel & Daycare that helps protect your pet’s feet from these dangers. Keep pets leashed: Snowfall can disguise familiar scents that tell your dog where he is. More dogs become lost during winter than any other season. Keep your pet on a leash, check your invisible fence battery each month as the cold can drain it quicker, and make sure your pet is wearing ID tags each time they go outside. Microchipping—done affordably at your local Veterinarian’s office— adds an extra level of safety. Keep them warm: Just as people can suffer from hypothermia, so can pets. Animals cannot tell you when they are getting cold, so we need to make our best judgement on when they’ve had enough outdoor time. Ideally, all pets would live indoors, but if your pet must stay outside, provide them with a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow them to sit and lay down comfortably, but is still small enough to conserve their body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches off of the ground and covered with plenty of heat insulating materials such as cedar shavings or straw (not hay). The shelter should face away from the wind and you will need to cover the entrance with waterproof burlap or a very heavy plastic. Also, pets who spend a lot of time outside need to eat more food to stay warm. You can use rubber dishes to keep the contents from freezing quickly. As always, if you see any animal struggling to survive during the winter, please call your local animal control or SPCA hotline to report it.

“Glad Tiding to YOU” at the Angola, N.Y. Post Office

Who among us doesn’t enjoy hearing good news or receiving a happy greeting?

The Christmas, New Year and holiday season tends to encourage the sharing of fun memories along with best wishes and hopes for the future. These happier thoughts were the inspiration behind the pictorial postmark “Glad Tidings to YOU” offered at the Angola Post Office on December 27, 2018.

Postmaster David Tempestoso shows us what the official stamp looks like! Carrie McDonough, PSE from Brant, helped out in Angola on the day of the cancel.

displays a big smile and the “Glad Tidings to YOU” postmark.

As per USPS rules, hand-back service of the pictorial postmark was allowed on Dec. 27th. Pictured is collector Becky Leone, with her freshly cancelled envelope.

During the first business hour of Dec. 27th, over 80 cancels were issued to those visiting the PO, which is located in the village of Angola. As is protocol, packages, cards and letters sent out on that date, included the special home town message; stamped in the upper right corner and slightly touching the edge of the postage stamps. Mike Seavy, PSE Angola and Post Master David Tempestoso were at the window and ready for the crowd! Carrie McDonough, PSE from the Brant PO was also on hand to help with the busy morning. Because they are interested in collecting local history, many people stopped by the PO for the hand-back service. Becky Leone is one of these collectors. In addition to the Dec. 27th, 2018 Angola pictorial postmark, Becky has also collected the “Christmas Card” postmarks from Farnham (Dec. 18th, 2018) and Brant (Dec. 20th, 2018). She has quite a few pictorial postmarks in her collection including various “President Lincoln’s Funeral Train Route” (2015) and “The Angola Horror” (2017), which was created in solemn remembrance of the horrific train tragedy of 1867.

The “Glad Tidings to YOU” pictorial postmark was announced on-line, in the USPS postal bulletin dated Dec. 20th. During the 30 days that the postmark was active, the Angola PO issued a total of 218 postmarks. 52 mailed in requests were received from over 22 states with 1 international request arriving from Singapore! Michigan and New York had the highest number of requests at 6 each. Florida and Illinois each had 4 requests. California, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas and Virginia were all tied with 3 requests each. The remaining states sent in 1 or 2 requests each.

The Brant-Farnham Historical Society initiated this holiday season project at the Farnham, Brant and Angola PO’s with the help, approval and support of David Tempestoso, who is the postmaster of all 3 locations. The project was approved and authorized by the USPS. On the Dec. 27th pictorial date, the historical society had a hospitality treat table available... complete with sparkling grape juice to celebrate the “Glad Tidings to YOU” postmark as well as the upcoming new year. Hofstra Student from Angola Named Experiential Learning Grant Recipient

Kennedy Cymerman, a Hofstra University student from Angola, has been named an inaugural recipient of the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Transformative Learning Grant. The grant's financial support subsidizes the expense of research projects, commuting to New York City for internships and community service experiences, and the cost of study abroad programs.

According to HCLAS Dean Benjamin Rifkin, the Transformative Learning Grant will be awarded every semester to students who have committed to an experiential learning program the following semester or during an intercession. Students selected for the grant must have financial need verified by Hofstra's Student Financial Services. The grants have been made possible by the generosity of Hofstra donors.

Kennedy, a member of Hofstra's class of 2020, is a music major, who will be taking classes in music theory, eartraining, music history, voice, intro-to-cinema studies, and dance when she studies at the University of Melbourne in Australia this spring. She will apply the HCLAS grant toward her educational expenses.

SS. Peter & Paul School

Students at SS. Peter & Paul School in Hamburg recently had a fun STREAM activity as they welcomed Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra French Hornist Sheryl Hadeka. Hadeka gave a presentation to students about storytelling with music. She broke down the process of a story featuring a beginning, middle and an end and incorporated music with the story telling. Pictured above is Hadeka playing her french horn for students.

Once a month, the Lake Shore Leadership in Action Class pays a special visit to our Life Skills' Classes in our high school to educate students of all learning abilities Each month, Leadership students choose a different theme and activity to teach to their peers to

incorporate holiday themed fun, new skills and social interaction. This past December, students from both classes baked and decorated cookies to bring home as gifts to their loved ones. Although students learned great skills that day, the real lesson came into view watching students of all learning abilities work and learn together. The Lake Shore Leadership in Action Class would like to thank the Lake Shore Special Education Department and teachers Mrs. DiChristina and Mrs. Reicher for their time and cooperation. The lessons learned by all students are ones that cannot come from books or videos but from real experiences in the classroom, and those lessons are invaluable.
