1898 The ‘mill in the woods”.

The sawmill built by Samuel L. Butts.

Samuel L. Butts was born on May 25, 1789 in Dartmouth, Mass. He was a surveyor for the Holland Land Company and worked for Joseph Ellicott, helping to lay out this entire area. He arrived in what is now the Town of Brant, in 1820. At that time Brant was a fairly unsettled area. Samuel built his home near the Delaware Creek in Lot 41. In 1822 he built the very first sawmill in Brant, which for several years was the only industry of its kind in the area. It too was located on Delaware Creek, deep in the woods between Grannis Road (today known as Ellis Road) and Brant-North Collins Road. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society

Lake Shore Senior High Artists’ Work Selected for National Show

Paintings to be displayed at historic site

Five students’ paintings from the Lake Shore Senior High Art Department have been selected to be displayed at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, North Carolina. This is a national exhibition running from April 1-May 31, 2018, with artwork selected from schools across the country.

Students were given the theme, “Nothing Happens, Unless First a Dream,” a line from Carl Sandburg’s famous poem, “The People, Yes.” Students created paintings expressing their visions for the future. The following students have had their artwork chosen for this prestigious exhibition: Sierra Aliota, Grace Flickinger, Toni Liles, Madison Miranda, and Ruby Thomas.

Senior Center hosted the 1st Holiday Bazaar, along with bake good sale, during temperamental weather. As we all know the Town of Evans and surrounding businesses held several holiday events for the residents of Evans community. Veronica Sullivan, director of the senior center states: “We wanted to test the waters with holding a holiday bazaar and see how many vendors and how much traffic would be produced throughout the two day event.” It was a huge success in her eyes; the vendors that came were from surrounding townships and provided diverse merchandise. Surprisingly, the center hand a lot of traffic and all the vendors did fairly well with sales. The center also was able to generate revenue for their Senior Actives account from the diligent efforts of the following senior center workshops which provided many handmade items: Quilting, Sewing, Crocheting, along with @ least 20 seniors donating homemade baked goods. This is just a continuation of ways the director and staff, along with great participation from the senior members to keep the center up and operating for the continued benefit of the senior population of the Town of Evans.
