Phyllis Notaro - Hall of Fame Bowler
Recently the Brant-Farnham Historical Society was contacted by Arline and Tony Danial. They had items once belonging to Phyllis Notaro (their “Aunt Philly”) and wondered if the society would be interested in having them for the society’s historical room.
Their question was answered with a “YES of course!” And...just a few days later, our society received the following items: a painting of Phyllis Notaro with a gold plate that states “Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame 1993”, a framed print of the GREAT SEAL OF THE UNITED STATES, personally signed by Congressman Jack Kemp, a N.Y. Republican Representative serving from 1971-1993, which reads: “For Phyllis Notaro - With congratulations and thanks from her many friends for contributing to our community and our country. -All the Best, Jack Kemp”, and an engraved trophy “1966 National Doubles Match Game Champion - Jessie Miller and Phyllis Notaro”.
This is an enormous honor for our society! Phyllis is enshrined in four Bowling Halls of Fame: The Woman’s International Bowling Congress (1979), The Buffalo Women’s Bowling Association (1982), the New York State Woman’s Association (1986), and the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame (1993). The donated items are a great addition to items we currently have on display: Phyllis’ bowling bag and ball, various photographs, news clippings, and a framed print of her “300 GAME”.
Phyllis Notaro was a lifelong resident of Brant, N.Y. and very active in the Brant community throughout her life. She was the daughter of the late Margaret and John Notaro. Her siblings were Thomas Notaro, Nina Notaro-Faltus, and Bertha and Frances Notaro. The Notaro family (and generations thereof), are highly respected and fondly remembered throughout our Brant community.

Xavier White is on team Infinity and his favorite subject is math. Outside of school, Xavier likes to play video games and play with others. In the future, he would like to start a business and make money however he can. His favorite thing in the world is his family. Xavier believes that the most important trait for continued success is PR.

Kole is in 8th grade and on team Spirit and his favorite subject is physical education. Kole likes to play basketball with his brother and his friends. In the future, Kole would like to go to be a mechanic and work on cars, trucks or motorcycles. His favorite things in the world are his family and friends. Remembering the Blizzard of 1977
Brrrrrrrr! We see here the town of Brant plow truck during the blizzard of 1977! This blizzard of ‘77 photo and three others, were donated to the historical society by Sally Giambrone in 2011 or so. Sally and her husband Bill lived on Ellis Road in the town of Brant and possibly this photo was taken on that road. Her husband Bill was a long-time employee of the town of Brant Highway Department. Sally’s brother-in-law Joe served as the town of Brant Highway Superintendent for more than four decades. Let’s hope we don’t see snow like this anytime soon!

The Brant District #1 School added a second story in the year of 1910.
The Paving of Commercial Street in Farnham, N.Y. began in 1915. The Steam Cement Mixer is shown in front of the Walker Bros. Store of General Merchandise.
From the Old Photo Album A Timeline for the Town of Brant, Part 16 Continuation…
1910: In 1910 as the need for more rooms developed, the roof on the Brant District #1 School was raised and the school was transformed into a two story, four classroom structure. The Brant school at that time was located on the Brant-Angola Road. The structure, easily recognizable, is still standing today and is currently an apartment building owned by the Pero family.
1913-14: Natural gas lines were installed in Brant and the number of kerosene lamps began to diminish and were replaced by gas lamps.
1915: Men begin the paving of Commercial Street in Farnham, N.Y. In the Sept 8, 1915 edition of “GOOD ROADS, DEVOTED TO THE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF ROADS AND STREETS, Volume X, July - December, 1915, by The E.L. Powers Co., New York” we find a reference of the bids received for brick paving work of “Road No. 1304, Farnham, Village - Commercial Street, Erie County: 1.17 miles - Shaw & Lakin, Jamestown, N.Y. $26,878; O.M. Severson,Erie, Pa., $27,736; Dunkirk Const. Co., Dunkirk, N.Y. $27,821.”

Sally E. MacPherson of Angola died February 1, 2023 in Buffalo General Hospital, she was 80. Loving mother of Heather (Ron Tebo) Kasperek, John MacPherson Jr. and Timothy (Sandy) MacPherson. Sister of Judy Stoddard, Dorothy Hilliard, Barbara Sphon, Bruce Hayes, Rodney Hayes the late John Edmonds and Kathleen Messner. Grandmother of Jessica Verstreate, Kelsey and Jacob MacPherson. Great grandmother of Gracie and Nikkole. Arrangements are incomplete. Service date and time to be announced.
Richard L. Hazard, Sr. of Lake View, NY, passed away on January 18, 2023 at the age of 86. He is predeceased by his siblings Shirley (Pete), Jack and Lenny. His younger brother, David, has been huge support to his brother and the family especially during the last few years and we couldn’t have handled this nearly as well without him. He is our rock. Rich is predeceased by his first wife, Jeanne Meaney whom he had five children with, Richard, Jr (Sharon), Mark (Chrissy), Donald, Bonnie and Michael. Rich is also predeceased by his second wife, Nancy Ross and has a step-son, Peter Ross (Elizabeth). He leaves behind grandchildren Jason, Rebecca (Ben), Alanna, Sierra, Christian, Corey, Brandon, and Kayla plus great-grandchildren, Nora Jean and Malickai. Rich worked in a multitude of jobs, from press operator to school bus driver. After retirement, he loved to work on small engines. Known as “Mr. Fix-It”, Rich could fix anything, or so he tried, and had every tool known to man. If he didn’t know how to fix it, he would “MacGyver” it. Rich discovered video games somewhat late in life and immediately became obsessed. He could sit for hours surrounded by his gaming gear and play his PS5 for hours, usually while his beloved Yankees were on the other screen. Unfortunately, he ran out of time and didn’t finish the quest from Elden Ring. When Rich entered home Hospice Care, he was living life on his terms. He did as he pleased and ate what he pleased. He had a special fondness for donuts, cookies and ice cream. Services will be held at a later date.
