A lifelong resident of Angola entered into rest on January 27, 2018 at the age of 91 after a long and courageous battle with COPD. She was the beloved wife of the late Salvatore Serio and Edward Forster; loving and devoted Mother of Salvatore (Sam) (Fran) Serio and the late John Serio; cherished Grandmother of James (Sandra), Wendy Newton, David (Meghan), Michael (Jennifer), and John (Jill) Serio; Great-Grandmother of Heather, Mitchell, Nathan, Bradley, Max, Alexis, Shawn and Marley Serio; loving Daughter of John and Josephine Ianello; dear Sister of the late Joyce, Carl (Clara Jane) Ianello, Sam (Carrie) Ianello, Mildred “Claudia” (Sam) Mogavero, Clara (Jim) LoCurto and John Ianello. Also survived by several Nieces and Nephews. Mary was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society at MPB Church, and TOPS Club in Silver Creek. She was employed at New Era Hat factory and later worked many years at the Angola Bakery. In addition to spending time with her family, she enjoyed roller skating, dancing and crocheting beautiful afghans for her family. The Angola Horror Remembered Event
“150 years ago one of the world’s worst and deadly train accidents occurred just 1/2 mile away from the center of the Village of Angola, N.Y. One week prior to Christmas, on December 18, 1867, passengers on their way to New York City had mostly boarded in Cleveland, Ohio and were contained in four passenger cars constructed primarily of wood. As the train was leaving the forty foot wooden trestle bridge over the Big Sister Creek in Angola, the last two cars of the Lake Shore Railway elite express train derailed. The very last train car fell to the frozen creek below. The car ahead of the last, made it across to the east side of the bridge, however it then slid down the steep embankment. The accident known as The Angola Horror made headlines throughout the nation.” This railway tragedy which occurred on December 18, 1867, will forever remain a part of our local village history. The Angola Horror Remembered Committee arranged a special gathering to reflect upon and remember this train tragedy which took 50 lives, 150 years ago. The Angola Horror Remembered Event was held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at the NEW ANGOLA THEATER, 72 North Main Street, Angola, N.Y. free of charge. The Theater personnel were kind enough to reschedule their movie for that Sunday afternoon, to an earlier time, so as to accommodate this unique event. A crowd of over 170 persons of all ages, were in attendance that winter eve. Both sides of the snowy streets of Angola were lined with cars and all the municipal parking areas were crowded as well. A bus tour of the train tragedy site at the Big Sister Creek Bridge, was arranged for a 4PM start. However, so many people arrived to take the tour, that the bus driver graciously agreed to take a second group to tour the train tragedy site. The large-sized school bus was completely packed for both trips. Committee member Caryl Youngers was the speaker during both bus tours, and many commented that he was an informative and knowledgeable tour guide. “He sure knows his railroad history!” was heard from numerous people as they left the bus. While waiting for the bus groups, our speakers/authors were available for book signings and those attendees in the theater seats were treated to Civil War Era Music expertly performed by Fr. John Kwiecien of Most Precious Blood Church, Angola and Corinne Damerau-Best, also of Angola. When the bus tours were complete and the wonderful period music program came to an end, committee member and master of ceremonies - Robert Barrett - welcomed everyone. He explained to all in attendance, the reason for the day’s event and how it came to be. He also mentioned that all involved were volunteers, including but not limited to the bus driver, the musicians, the pictorial postmark designer, the committee members and each of the evening’s speakers. Robert (Bob) introduced Peter Walters as our first speaker. Peter grew up in the village of Angola (he now lives out of state), and since a young lad, he has had an obsession with trains and train history. He shared his knowledge with us; we received an education sprinkled with just the right amount of humor. He had a slide show presentation and also brought various train artifacts with him. One such artifact, was an original chair that was once utilized in the Nickel Plate Depot, Angola , N.Y. - back when the depot first opened in the 1880’s! Peter traveled from out of town (Indiana), back to his hometown of Angola, specifically to help with this event. He had many fond memories of life in the village of Angola and enthusiastically shared some favorite stories. Peter did not hesitate to call upon our village historian Mrs. Joan Houston (who was in the audience), for verification of local historical facts when necessary. Next, Bob introduced Charity Vogel - author of “The Angola Horror”. Her intense research and popular local history book has helped to highlight, heighten and sustain interest in this railroad tragedy. That evening, Charity focused on remembering all persons of that tragic day who had suffered so greatly. She offered prayers and then insight into some of the personalities of the passengers and victims traveling on the train that afternoon. She also told us about persons who, for whatever circumstance, had intended to, but then did not take the train that day. Karen Wielinski - author of “One on the Ground”, was introduced by Bob as our final speaker for the evening. She told of the catastrophic evening when Flight 3407 crashed on her home in Clarence, N.Y. Her story was painful, as it re-opened the dreadful memories of that evening. Her first hand experience tugged at our hearts. She reminded us that as a result of the two tragedies, Flight 3407 and the Angola Horror, new regulations aimed at improving passenger safety were enacted. And...in both tragedies, ordinary people, became instant heroes as they responded to the frantic and immediate need for help. The event of remembrance was successful. We gathered together, remembering those who died as well as the unintended heroes of that tragic day. At the end of the program, commemorative envelopes were available at no charge. The envelopes were souvenirs of the evening, but also intended to encourage people to obtain the specially designed pictorial cancel available at the Angola post office on December 18, 2017 - 150 years later to the date of “The Angola Horror Railway Disaster”. It may have only been 7 years since 8th grade graduation, but walking into Queen of Heaven Church on the evening of January 27, 2018 brought a rush of memories to Richard Grant of Derby (Class of 2011). On this evening a special Mass was held, the 60th Diamond Jubilee Celebration Mass. It is a special reunion Mass to commemorate the founding of Queen of Heaven Schools. The Queen of Heaven School was the basis for the development of character, faith, respect, compassion and integrity. It holds a very special meaning to be part of The Queen of Heaven family. Both the parish and the school played a very important role in preparing Richard for his life journey. The evening began by walking through the church doors and seeing Father Tim Quinlavin sitting at the pulpit, a ‘pillar of strength’ that held the congregation and student body together for over 17 years. A mountain of a man with a teddy bear disposition. You can feel nothing but love for this man. Mass was celebrated by Rev. Gregory Faulhaber, Queen of Heaven’s Principal. Mrs. Mary Damico addressed both past and present school staff, pointing out the impact Queen of Heaven Schools has had on the community. Following the Mass was a reception for the School Alumni which was held in the gymnasium. There were cocktails and refreshments, but more importantly, there were hugs, kisses and stories that were shared, catching up on the years that have passed by much too quickly. What a wonderful tribute to an unforgettable staff and their commitment to empower each of their students to achieve their full potential, personally, morally, academically, physically and spiritually. Here’s to another 60 years for Queen of Heaven! Richard Grant is presently attending his junior year at the University of Buffalo majoring in Business. The Union Hotel, Brant, N.Y., about 1911
An excerpt from our 1964 Brant 125th Anniversary History Book reads as follows: “... on the Brant Reservation Road stood a general store which may have been built by Walter Seymour in 1839. In 1864, it was Levi Thompson’s general store. It is unclear when the transition took place and a hotel stood there, but records mention Julius Lehley building “another hotel” about 1885. In 1889, Emma Lehley owned the hotel, succeeded by Fred Johnt, Peter Reifel and August Middlemire and was known then as the Union Hotel, with a barroom on the main floor. In 1900, Frank Gruener operated the hotel and William Ahlers had it in 1903. Behind the building was located a corral which was used to keep cattle being driven to the market. Peter Pero, Sr. purchased the barroom and hotel in 1915. In 1933, Peter Pero Jr. and his wife, Angela, converted the hotel to a steakhouse and added bowling lanes in 1942.” Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society __________

A Pictorial Cancel to Remember
In November 2017, the Angola Horror Remembered Committee submitted a design to the Angola Post office Postmaster David Tempestoso, for a special pictorial cancel to commemorate the Angola Horror Railway Disaster. After review and all required USPS approvals, the design created by Angola N.Y. native Christian J. LoGrasso for “Big Sister Creek Station” appeared on the USPS website http://about.usps.com/ postal-bulletin/pb2017.htm. (Brochure dated 12/07/2017). The postmark date requested was the 150 year anniversary date of the Angola railway disaster. The response to the special pictorial cancel was overwhelming - with FIVE HUNDRED …yes…500 “First Day” cancels issued on the December 18, 2017 anniversary date! (We believe this has to be a record!) Commemorative envelopes supplied by the committee members at the previous day’s event, were available for free, until they ran out. The Angola, N.Y. postmark was available for 30 days and on the last day, the final count for this specifically designed cancel was an amazing total of 1,228!! Over the 30 day period, mailed in requests were received from 28 states including Washington, California, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, New Hampshire, Michigan and New York to name more than a few. Requests were also received from 4 countries: Germany, England, Spain and Belgium. This small piece of local history helped us all to stop, reflect and take time to remember a tragedy of one hundred and fifty years ago. A day when ordinary passengers of the unharmed lead railway cars and local residents of the village of Angola became instant heroes when they immediately responded to the cries of the many doomed victims that fateful afternoon of December 18th, 1867. Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon made a special stop at Southtowns Catholic School on January 31st to help them with her Valentine’s for Veterans Program. Legislator Dixon will deliver the handmade Valentine’s Day cards to veterans’ organizations throughout her district for Valentine’s Day. The morning started with an assembly explaining what the program is and who they will get delivered to. Every student from Preschool 3 to Grade 8 will be making hand made cards in appreciation for the veterans’ dedication and service. The Valentines for Veterans program is organized by Legislator Dixon and her colleagues. We are very happy to be part of this program. The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named Bridget Orth of Lakeview, NY to the SUNY Potsdam Dean's List. Orth, whose major is Psychology, was among 351 students who were honored for academic excellence in the Fall 2017 semester. To achieve the honor of being on the Dean's List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours, with a grade point average of between 3.25 and 3.49 in the given semester.
