A special thank you goes out to the First Church of Evans, Lake Shore Central’s Middle School’s 7th Grade Class and members of Most Precious Blood for their continued support.

When U.S. Navy Captain Eugene "Red" McDaniel was a Vietnam prisoner, he valued above all else the Bible verses he had memorized as a child. At the risk of being punished by his captors, he shared these gems from God's Word with fellow prisoners by tapping in code with his tin cup on the wall of his cell. The one who received the message passed it on to the man in the cell next to him and so it reached every American in the prison. When others remembered verses, they did the same, contributing to the store of their Bible knowledge. Even agnostics and atheists in the prison eagerly participated. During a time of good treatment the prisoners were given one Bible to use. Each prisoner took his turn memorizing as much as possible before he had to turn the Bible over to the next prisoner.

The Brant No. 3 School

The Brant No. 3 Schoolhouse was situated in the North Collins School District. The school, located on the northeast corner of Mile Strip and Mile Block Roads, has long since been remodeled into a residence.

Donna (DeCarlo) Mecca shared the following remembrance for The Town of Brant’s 175th Anniversary book which the historical society published in 2014: “I remember, at the age of 6, starting school at Brant #3. It was the neighborhood two room school house on the corner of Mile Block Road and Mile Strip Road. I was in the classroom with Miss Leiker as my teacher. There were four rows of students each row being grade 1, grade 2, grade 3 and grade 4. The other room had grades 5 thru and including grade 8. After you finished grade 8 you went to North Collins High School in North Collins, N.Y. for grades 9 thru and including grade 12. My sister and I would walk to Brant #3 school every day Monday to Friday. We would arrive at the school and climb at the time, what seemed like a lot of stairs up to the hallway before entering our classrooms. In the hallway there were hooks so we could hang up our coats and take off our boots in the wintertime. We brought our lunch and at noon time we would go downstairs in the basement which had large windows which gave us a lot of light in the room, we all ate our lunch there. In the winter when we could not go outside for recess, we also played in the basement. In the summer we had recess outside. We had a swing set with a slide for all the students to use.”

Southtowns Catholic School Celebrates the Buffalo Bills

On January 4th, Southtowns Catholic School students left their uniforms at home and wore their Buffalo Bills gear to school. This was to celebrate the Buffalo Bills making the playoffs after 17 years. To put it in perspective, not a single student was born yet. Evans Seniors Lent a Hand for Town of Evans Holidays

Evans Senior Center seniors lent a hand to the Town of Evans in support for a holiday event. Several ladies that participate at different workshops and programs all came together in the center’s kitchen to make holiday cookies to show the continuing partnership that is displayed from the Evans Senior Center. These ladies displayed their skills along with smiles and a lot of laughter. It was delightful to witness the interaction of these women and the stories that they shared of their own family memories with their children when they were younger.

Ice Jam Caused Flooding of the Big Sister Creek

On Thursday January 11, 2018 there was an ice jam on Big Sister Creek. This caused flooding of Route 5 back to the Bennett Road Intersection. The flood water and the ice blocks it carried went as far as Catalano Motors. Route 5 was closed from Sturgeon Point Road to Beach Road. No damage to the Historical building or contents. Fortunately, the water did not get high enough to enter the building.
