New Year, New You $

House is Your House
How to succeed with your New Year's resolution
While it's diff icult to gauge just how many people make New Year's resolutions each year, various factors suggest millions of people resolve to improve their lives each January. Television segments devoted to healthy resolutions and discounted memberships are just two of many indicators suggesting resolutions are popular and potentially big business.
As popular as making resolutions may be, reports indicate that they're more popular to make than commit to. For example, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail. So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help.

•
•
•
•
· Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal.
· Don't be shy. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you're also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer incite and/ or advice, which can prove invaluable.

· Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal.
· Expect setbacks. Just like it's important to be patient, it's equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don't be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

Tips to help realize your goals in the year ahead
At the dawn of a new year, many people set goals to motivate themselves to change. But as January 1 drifts further into the rearview mirror, it can be easy to settle into old habits and forget about the resolutions and goals established at the turn of the calendar.
Staying on course and achieving one’s goals requires discipline. In addition to working hard, men and women who want to realize their goals in the year ahead can take several steps to increase their chances of being successful.
• Examine your priorities. Achieving goals is easier when their goals can be among your biggest priorities. Examine your priorities to determine if you can fully commit to goals that may require significant time commitments. Men and women who are already stretched thin may need to recalibrate their goals or make changes in other areas of their lives before they can fully commit to pursuing new goals.
• Be specific in regard to planning. Being specific when choosing goals is important, but it’s equally important to be as specific as possible in regard to developing a plan to realize those goals. Before embarking on a journey to realize your goals, figure out how you’re
going to achieve them. Create a new daily or weekly schedule that allots time to realize your goals, seeking input from loved ones whose lives may be affected by your new schedule.
• Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

Deliver Bundles of Warmth
Since the week after Thanksgiving the Sophomore and Junior Class officers worked diligently to collect new and gently used hats, gloves, and blankets to be donated to the homeless. In December, the class officers, along with their advisors, spent the day distributing the items collected and volunteering their time at St. Vincent De Paul's and Compass House.
Lake Shore High School students and staff got to see firsthand, the work that it takes to provide, food, clothing, and shelter to those of all ages. We would like to thank everyone who helped make Bundles of Warmth 2017 a success.

December was a very busy month for the Lake Shore High School Leadership Students. They planned and facilitated four separate community events for Lake Shore and the Evans-Brant Community.
Specifically, 24 upper-classmen separated into four groups to organize holiday events to benefit others. These activities both enabled them to utilize their leadership skills learned and spread holiday cheer to all. Students were asked to participate in the planning of the Evans Parks Department Christmas Party, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore Holiday Ice Cream Social, Christmas in the Village, and the Annual High School Christmas Concert.
Each event had a different holiday theme, and students were happy to assist the many wonderful community leaders responsible for facilitating these events. Lake Shore Leadership Students also collaborated with the Dunkirk Pet-Smart store, which donated over 200 stuffed animals to the students of Lake Shore. Children of all ages were delighted to receive new, soft, cuddly friends at the Boys and Girls Club and the end of the holiday concert.
The Lake Shore Leadership Class appreciates all groups and community members who allowed them to participate in these holiday events and hopes the lives of all those who attended our events were positively impacted by its effort.

From the Old Photo Album
In the horse and buggy days of the early 1900’s, the establishment located just past the four corners in Brant, on Brant Reservation Road was known as the Union Hotel. It was originally owned by William Ahlers and Augusta Winters Ahlers. There was a trade off – and the Ahlers family took the Pero’s homestead farm (current residence of Kenny Fox on BrantFarnham Rd) and the Pero family took over and ran the hotel for many years.
Peter Pero Sr. met Angela Ganci of Buffalo and they were married on February 14, 1933. In September of 1933 the ban on prohibition was lifted. Peter and Angela Pero borrowed money to acquire a liquor license. For our 1989 Town of Brant 150th Anniversary History book Angela wrote: “Our one room, with its bar and pool table, was the sanctuary of the town’s males who spent hours enjoying each other’s company by playing cards, sipping homemade wine and talking. In 1937, we added a dining room, put in bathrooms and a new furnace. Prior to this it was wood burning stoves and an outhouse. We became famous for our own recipe of “Chicken in the Pan”, which we served in the “ruff style” (bibs and finger bowls). In 1940 we added another dining room, “the balcony,” and in 1941 we added the first six bowling lanes in the area.” In 1940 the business was called “Roadside Restaurant”. In 1942 it was “Pete Pero’s Steak House” with advertisements boasting of “Six Streamlined Brunswick Bowling Alleys”! (The phone number was Angola 143 F21). Our recent Supervisor and youngest son of Pete Sr. and Angela; Leonard K. (Lenny) Pero was owner and operator from 1972-1986. At that time it was then known as “Pete Pero’s Steak House and Bowling Lanes”. Nicki Pero Wilson (granddaughter of Pete Sr. and Angela) also opened “Pero’s Restaurant” at this location for a short time.
Currently the building, now empty and silent, is still owned by the Pero Family; the lanes, the bar and the restaurant remain as happy memories for the Town of Brant residents and all those who frequented this once extremely popular gathering spot.

A favorite activity in Brant, N.Y. was bowling at Pero Lanes!
