THE EVANS FORCE

The Evans Travel Softball program has unveiled their new team logo & name - “The Evans Force.” Last year, the 10U team was known just as “Evans Travel” while the 12U team were the Evans Eagles. The need to come up with a new name sparked a naming contest that resulted in the Evans Force. The program will play in 2 divisions this year, the 12U and 14U. The 14U team just recently completed a successful session at the Sahlen’s Indoor Softball League. Coach Jim Widger led the team to a 5-4 record including winning the last 3 games. The team was anchored by the pitching of Ruby Thomas, who pitched at a 14U level despite being only 12. Brittney Goodrich was solid with strong performances when filling in for Ruby. Erica Holscher had some timely hits as well as taking on the majority of catching duties. Abby Widger seemed to get on base with every bat and showed the ability to play multi-positions, all very well. Only 12 years old, Elle Hale proved to be ready for higher division with strong plate appearances, spectacular catches & outstanding speed on the base paths. Audrey Parks added stellar defense at 1st base while contributing offensively. Betsy Butlak’s strong arm was on display playing a solid third base along with offensive worthy of her third spot in the order. Her sister, Evie Butlak, playing up from 12U, provided speed on the base paths along with Emily Eich who might be the fastest of the group. Madison Scheuneman filled in part-time as catcher while also playing a number of different positions when called upon. Jade Cozzo added strong play in her first year of travel. The team did receive help from other part-time players. The team now enters their summer season with the hope of success in upcoming tournaments. __________

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

In January, the Respect Life Committee of Blessed John Paul II Parish held its first "Respect Life Essay Contest, open to all parish young people in grades 8-12. Mrs. Manley's 8th Grade Religion class at Southtowns Catholic participated as a class assignment. All of their essays were very well written, so all of the students were entered in the contest. In addtion to the ten entries from SCS, there were four others from students attending public school, all but one of whom previously attended Southtowns Catholic. (Ironically, even the one who wasn't a student has strong family ties to the school and parish!) We're very proud of all the students who entered the contest. Mrs. Mary Kowalczyk, of the Respect Life Committee, said that judging the essays was the most difficult task she can remember, because they were all very good. The First Place award ($100 McKinley Mall gift card) went to Emily Hale ("11 SCS grad, currently a sophomore at Lakeshore High School). Second Place went to SCS 8th grade student Elliott Di Christopher ($50 McKinley Mall gift card). Honorable Mention certificates were awarded to Matthew Argy, Brad Darvill, Evan Herman, Claire Koessler, Evan Mangan, Nick Ralph, Molly Skalski, Hunter Skoczylas, and Eli Tremblay, all current 8th graders at SCS. Also: Sarah Fiorello (Frontier Middle School 8th grader and granddaughter of our former school custodian, Mr. Charlie), Katie Bojdak and Natalie Pietro (formerly students at SCS, now 8th graders at Frontier Middle School & Eden Middle School). __________

SCS STUDENT DONATES TO LOCKS OF LOVE

Southtowns Catholic School Grade 2 student, Trinity Kehoe, donated 10+ inches of her beautiful blonde hair to Lock of Love. She has been talking about donating her hair for 2 years and when she knew she had more than 10 inches to share, Trinity knew it was time. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses they provide helps to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. Card of Thanks From the Brother of the late Betsey S. Currey I would like to thank my new extended family, the members of Absolut Care of Eden Facility. They have opened their hearts and door to me that I will forever be grateful for their help in dealing with the horrible decisions I had to make for my ailing sister. Thank you to John and Patty Latimore for handling a personal moment so professionally; Pastor Loos for the beautiful service; the attending Vicar of St. John’s for reassuring her that she will be in God’s hands; Hospice Foundation social worker, Connie James and Nurse Tina; Marcia Taylor for keeping her promise to her late aunt; Kevin Keefe for your rekindled loyalty - remember the good times; Lori Bridges, human resources of Petri’s Baking Products, for your concern keeping her health coverage active - good luck in the future; out of town family members, friends and employees of K & H Industries, past and present, for their support; Sherry (Paul) Kent-Battaglia for sharing her journey and support - she is someone who has been through the worst; Joey and Grace Augustyniak for making grandpa so happy, love you all; Marianne Baake for your kind words at the funeral; Klaus Baake and Cala’s Kitchen for hosting the brunch after the funeral. Betsey is now having her peanut butter, brushing her hair and watching over all of us with her perfect vision.

ANGOLA PENNYSAVER

The Angola Pennysaver takes pride in recognizing Debby Anderson as the February 2013 honoree for the Lake Shore Central School District “Employee of the Month” award. Debby is shown in the photo below accepting a check for $100 from Bob Biondi and James Austin, owners of the Angola Pennysaver.

Congratulations, Debby, for your dedication and commitment to preparing students at Lake Shore Central for their journeys through life. You are a great asset to our school district and to our community.

Pictured Above(left to right): Robert Biondi, Debby Anderson, James Austin Debby Anderson has served the Lake Shore Central School District as a school psychologist since 1991. She has worked in every building during her 21 year tenure in a variety of roles including Committee on Preschool Education Chairperson, Committee on Special Education (for school-age) Chairperson, Behavior Specialist as well as conducting psycho-educational evaluations. Most recently Deb has served as the Transition Coordinator for Special Education Students in grades 8 through 12. Initially, Deb's role was to ensure district compliance with transition plans and services and documentation on student's Individual Education Plans. However, Deb simultaneously focused on quality improvement as well. She attended numerous workshops on Transition Services and quickly became a turn key trainer and mentor for her colleagues. She introduced many concepts and strategies aimed at teaching special education students essential skills needed for post secondary employment and college readiness. Deb recently implemented “Operation Graduation”, a mentoring program at the High School that links teachers/ staff with at-risk students. Graduation ‘coaches’ seek to build relationships with their student and then provide ongoing monitoring and persistent support to help students feel engaged in school and empowered to reach their goals. Improvements in attendance and graduation rates are the goals of Operation Graduation. Needless to say, Deb is a tremendous asset to the Lake Shore Central School District. She is a true team player who isn’t afraid to”think out of the box” when it comes to supporting students. She continuously demonstrates her dedication to the students and staff in our district. Deb conducts herself with utmost integrity and professionalism in each of her important roles as School Psychologist.

IMMACULATA ACADEMY STUDENTS COLLECT CLOTHES FOR THOSE IN NEED

Students in Immaculata Academy’s Franciscan Club recently donated over four large bags of clothing, shoes, and coats to St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy in Buffalo. Part of St. Luke’s Ministry is to provide clothing to those in need through their “St. Luke’s Mall” where people can come in and receive clothing absolutely free. Members of the club had lent a helping hand at St. Luke’s earlier in the school year, when they went they had service-oriented class retreats there, and decided that they could continue to help. Franciscan Club moderator and Theology teacher, Deacon Robb Ciezki was moved by the students’ passion, "It never ceases to amaze me just how giving the students here at Immaculata Academy are. They saw a need in our community and not only did they recognize it, they acted promptly and with a loving heart." The clothing drive ran from mid-November through the end of January. About Immaculata: Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit, our goal for each student is that she maximize her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society. PI DAY CELEBRATION AT SCS

The Middle School Math Classes at Southtowns Catholic School celebrated PI day on March 14th. The day was filled with activities that centered around circles which included hula hoops, a "Tour de PI" Relay, Scavenger hunt, a human circle and of course eating varities of pies! Pi day is an unofficial holiday celebrating the Mathematical constant pi (π); the numbers in the month/ day format correspond wth three numbers in the formula, ( 3.14) Pictured: 7th grade students Alexandra Bevilacqua, Erin Wright and Dea Chiavetta. __________
