Local Community News
Students at SS. Peter & Paul, a Community School in Hamburg, spent time during music class preparing for an upcoming concert. The students add to the music experience by playing boom whackers, a unique pitched instrument. Pictured form left are Isabella Taylor, John Bauer and Sophia Tronolone.
Students in grades 5-8 participated in the Rockin' Rollercoaster Academy. They learned about the physics that make Roller coasters a wild and crazy ride. Students had to construct their own roller coaster using materials provided to them like PVC insulation piping, cardboard, duct tape, and masking tape. There were certain specifications for the coasters like each one had to have at least one hill other than the initial drop, a loop, and a turn. NYSCATE Outstanding Teacher
Lake Shore District Technology Integrator Michael Drezek was recently named the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies (NYSCATE) in Education 2016 Outstanding Teacher.
Drezek, who has worked at Lake Shore for the past 12 years, has spent the past two working closely with both the Information Technology and Curriculum and Instruction Departments to integrate technology into classrooms across all five campuses. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, he also leads the Middle School Computer Science Club.
“Winning this award is a great achievement in my career,” said Drezek. “Our students are incorporating the latest technology in many of their classes, and I look forward to going to work each day and helping them make the most of it. It’s a great honor to be recognized by NYSCATE.”
NYSCATE is an organization of over 20,000 technology-using educators and administrators in New York State committed to transforming teaching and learning. Drezek was formally honored at their annual convention held in Rochester, New York this past November.

Southtowns Catholic School 2nd Place Robotic Win
Students in the Robotics Club at Southtowns Catholic School competed in the X-STREAM Games & Expo on December 4th. X-Stream was held at St. Joe's in Kenmore. With extremely tough competition from all the Catholic School within the Buffalo Diocese, SCS tied for 2nd place. Robotics is part of STREAM (science, Technology, Re;legion, Engineering and Math). The Robots were created by iDesign Solutions, this program teaches students to design, construct and program their own robot while gaining valuable teamwork and problem solving skills. A.J. Schmidt Elementary Students Put on Jingle Bell Jukebox Musical
For three days in December, grade students from A.J. Schmidt, under the direction of Mrs. Holly Martin, presented the musical “Jingle Bell Jukebox…the Flip Side!” The musical centers on a 1950’s-style diner with a rocking jukebox serving up all the holiday hits.
The students sang traditional holiday songs and dressed in poodle skirts, leather jackets and plenty of holiday flare. The school’s principal, Mrs. Clark, made a cameo appearance, much to the student’s and audience’s delight. The props were provided by the art teacher, Mr. Ruffino, and included a jukebox which lit up and had a motorized CD topper.
It was an exciting performance which really helped to ring in the holidays at A.J. Schmidt. Congratulations to all who had a part in making the production such a success.

“Christmas is a week away!” said Itsy to himself as he enjoyed a hot slice of pizza from Pizza Hut in Derby . Christmas was the most wonderfiul time of the year for Itsy the Elf, but now that his list was written, he wasn’t sure why he still felt like something was missing...
“Ready for Christmas, Itsy?” Itsy looked up from his list to see his favorite waitress, Name Person at Name Diner, setting down a giant stack of his very favorite blueberry pancakes. “Almost!” he answered. Christmas was the most wonderful time of the year for Itsy the Elf, but now that his list was written, he wasn’t sure why he still felt like something was missing…
After his delicious lunch, Itsy was ready for a busy day of Christmas shopping! First, he stopped to see his friends at Key Bank in Angola. Itsy had been carefully saving his spare change all year long, and he brought his rolls of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies to his favorite teller, Peggy.
She counted up Itsy’s change, and handed him a crisp stack of bills. Now Itsy had the money he needed to buy all of the gifts on his list!
“Oh, what fun it is to shop!” exclaimed Itsy, as he visited his favorite stores all around town. He bought cool clothes from Once Upon A Child and great gifts for his pet-owner friends at K-9 Kutters .
As Itsy headed home with his gifts, something caught his eye. Tacked to the lightpost, he spotted a poster with a picture of the cutest dog he had ever seen. He suddenly knew what was missing from his holiday: a pet to love!
Later that evening, as Itsy sat enjoying his favorite dinner at Pasquale’s in Derby, he thought about what it would be like to have a dog just like Bitsy. They would go for long walks, run around the park, play fetch and have so much fun! He’d always wanted a dog, but he also understood that having a dog came with a lot of new responsibilities. Itsy knew he had a lot of thinking to do before making this important decision.
The next day, Itsy arrived at Angola Shurfine bright and early. As he filled his cart with delicious treats for Christmas dinner, he still wondered if he was ready to be a pet parent. When he asked his good friend Kelly at checkout what she thought, she said, “Itsy, if you can take Bitsy to the vet and make sure he gets plenty of attention and exercise, I know you’ll give him a great home with all of the love and patience he needs.” Itsy smiled. His mind was made up, and he was so very excited about meeting Bitsy! Having forgotten a few things, he made a quick stop to see Mary at Derby Deli to complete his shopping list.
When Itsy finally met Bitsy, it was love at first sight. His heart was filled with glee! But, Itsy had to shop and prepare his home for Bitsy! He went to Just Pets to stock up on food, toys, and treats while Bitsy stayed overnight with his friends at Golden Paws Pet Care Services in their pet boarding kennels. The next day, they suggested spreading the word about pet adoption to help other dogs and cats without homes, just like Bitsy had been!
Their cart was full! Time to check out and head to Village Veterinary Clinic of Hamburg to introduce themselves. Bitsy felt so lucky to have a clean bill of health. Before leaving, Itsy and Bitsy took a tour of the fancy building and fun play areas for dogs and cats.

Lake Shore Senior High Student Government Attends State Leadership Conference
Lake Shore High School’s Student Government had the opportunity to travel to the Catskills for this year’s New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities Conference. During the conference, Student Government members were able to share ideas, network, and learn skills necessary for being a student and school leader. At the conference, Lake Shore was presented the 2016 State Charity Award for their efforts in raising money for the state charity, the Epilepsy Foundation. Student Government hosted the annual Dodgeball Tournament and Seniors in Demand to raise money for the foundation. In conjunction with these events, Lake Shore was named to the NYS CLSA Honor Council because of their continuous hard work and efforts to serve the community and school.
