Memorial Day Services in Farnham, NY

Memorial Day Services were held at the Veteran’s Memorial Park on Commercial Street, Farnham on Monday, May 26th, 2025. Village of Farnham Mayor Jere Hoisington began the services by welcoming us all. He invited Deacon Lynn Whitworth of Holy Cross Lutheran Church to provide the opening prayer, after which Village Trustee George Cordia was asked to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the pledge, the STAR-SPANGLED BANNER was played using sound equipment with the voices of those present ringing out loud, clear and united. Jere Hoisington then introduced the Village Board members in attendance as well as the Farnham Volunteer Fire Dept. members, Honor Guard, and the Farnham Ladies Auxiliary members who were there in full force. Jere Hoisington, then asked Mark DeCarlo to the podium to recognize those board members from Brant who were in attendance. Mark did so, adding a thank you to the Village of Farnham for hosting the Memorial Day Services.

After a short speech, Jere Hoisington introduced the morning’s guest speaker; Operation Specialist Senior Chief Neil I. Ross USN, retired. Chief Neil Ross began his speech by sharing a true story from the Cold War of 54 years ago. His ship, the helicopter carrier USWS INCHON, was anchored in a Norwegian fjord. Neil had been having breakfast with one of the helicopter crew members of a NATO exercise codenamed operation “Strong Express”. After breakfast, they parted ways. Not four hours later, reports came back to the ship that one of the helicopters was missing. And one-half hour after that, they learned that one of the helicopters had flown into a Norwegian cloud and did not come out the other side. They had struck a mountain. The helicopter had three souls on board and one of them was the crewmember who shared breakfast with Neil just a few hours earlier. Neil described his devastation at learning the horrible news and the thoughts he carried with him, the days, weeks, and years that followed. 54 years have passed. Neil stated “To this day, I do not remember what the crew member looked like. I don’t even remember his name. Yet I do know: (that) somewhere in America, there lies a grave with his remains in it. Then I think of all the things I did these last 54 years. Wonderful things like vacations, raising a family, enjoying life; and then, I think of the things this crew member did not have. I got to be an old man...he NEVER got to be an old man.” It was a very moving and memorable speech.

The Honor Guard of the American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 gave their Gun Salute, followed by the playing of Taps during the Memorial Day Services at Farnham.

Following Chief Neil’s speech, and under the leadership of Joe Tomlinson, the Honor Guard from the American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 delivered the traditional Gun Salute. Immediately after the salute, both the smell of gun smoke and the mournful sound of Taps, filled the air. At the completion of Taps, family members of local Veterans then placed six flags at the base of the Veterans monument to recognize each branch of our

Military. Lee Greenwood’s patriotic song GOD BLESS THE USA was played via audio equipment - and we all sang along proudly.

Deacon Lynn was asked to close the services with the Benediction. Before doing so, she first shared a story of a family friend’s son, and, like Neil’s tale, it too had a sad and tragic ending. Yet she reminded us that the sacrifices such as those mentioned today, are the reason we are gathered here - to pay tribute and remember these heroes. She then requested that we all stand close, place hands on shoulders or hold hands to recite the Lord’s Prayer together. And we did.

Following the final prayer, Mayor Hoisington advised us that refreshments were available at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He thanked Lynda Ostrowski for providing the music and again, thanked everyone for their attendance at this most important ceremony. As Mayor Hoisington, Chief Neil and Deacon Lynn with their stirring remarks so powerfully reminded us – we have our freedoms today, because of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Never forget.
