Town of Brant Honors Patty Friend as 2025 Brant Resident of the Year
Excerpt published in the 2025 Brant Summer Festival Program:
Born on January 21, 1959 to Rob and Kathleen Mittner, Patricia Ann “Patty” Friend (nee Mittner) was raised in Buffalo and later in Point Breeze, Angola, alongside her two brothers and two sisters. A graduate of Lake Shore High School, Patty began working as a teenager at Chicks. Her caring personality and strong work ethic stood out early, leading her to a long-time position at Flexovit, and later at TXRX.

EVENTS
BRANT-FARNHAM 2025 FREE MONDAY NIGHT CONCERT featuring SHAKY STAGE, July 14th, 6:30pm- 8:30pm at Farnham Veterans Park, Commercial Street.
In 1979, she married Bill Friend, and together they bought a small farm in the town of Brant, where they still reside. It was here that they raised their three childrenRon, Jolene and Sam - instilling in them the same values of kindness, humility, and service that Patty lives by each day. The Friend family home has long been a gathering place, especially during the years they hosted the beloved Barn Mass for St. Anthony’s Church at Christmas time.
Patty has spent her life giving back to her community, not for recognition, but because it’s simply who she is. As longtime Brant Town Historian, she has preserved countless local stories, initiated memorial postal cancellation stamps, and can spend hours joyfully researching and sharing the area’s rich past. Patty loves neighborhood events that showcase history and bring people together. She’s been a faithful volunteer with St. Anthony’s Church, the Angola Library, Brant Summer Fest, and countless other community endeavors and fundraisers. Even when she is not directly involved with planning and organizing local events, she is regularly attending them and supporting their efforts. In addition to being a familiar face at high school musicals, spaghetti dinners, strawberry socials, and the like, Patty is a frequent contributor to the Angola Pennysaver, where she loves to recognize the achievements of other citizens and document community happenings.

Le Moyne College Names Daniel Feeley to its Spring Dean's List
Daniel Feeley, a Junior Marketing major from Angola, NY, was named to the Le Moyne College Spring 2025 Dean's List. To make the list, students must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or above.
Located in a suburban setting on a picturesque 160-acre campus in Syracuse, N.Y., Le Moyne College is one of only 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. Offering more than 30 majors, Le Moyne provides a values-based education that helps students explore their potential through academics, experience and service. In 2024, for the 12th consecutive year, Le Moyne was ranked by The Princeton Review as one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduate education, an honor achieved by only 15 percent of the colleges and universities in the nation. A Le Moyne education provides students with the intellectual skills necessary to succeed in the world and the will to use their abilities to promote a more just society.

The Buffalo and Lake Erie Traction Co. line once extended from Buffalo, NY to Erie, Pa. In the photo above, passengers are disembarking, preparing to board, and waiting at the Buffalo and Lake Erie Trolley Station at Farnham, NY. Notice the pointed steeple of the old wooden Holy Cross Lutheran Church in the background. (This church burned in 1930.) The trolley station was located where the Farnham Fire Department and village hall currently stand today.
In the early 1900’s the method of transportation from Angola to Farnham to Silver Creek and back, was made easy enough by riding the B & LE Trolley. Larry Militello a while back reminded us that when his dad - Angelo Militello Jr. (who was once the Town of Brant’s oldest citizen at 99 years of age) attended High School in Silver Creek, NY, there were no school busses available. The method of transportation to and from school was via the B & LE Trolley line. Daisy Mae (Erick) Winters (a long time Brant resident from the past) had remarked that when attending the dances at the Farnham Dance Hall (located above Schwert’s Store) she would take the street car from Angola [where she lived at that time] to Farnham. One evening she and her then future husband, Herbert Winters, missed the last car (which was at midnight) and they walked from Farnham to Angola along the trolley tracks.
As per the 1973 writings of Mrs. Joan Houston (Angola, NY), “the trolley station in Angola was located on the corner of Main and School Streets in 1912. Passenger service between Buffalo and Erie was possible every forty minutes.” She also tells us that “the tracks in Angola followed Main Street from School Street to Commercial Street, following the west side of the railroad tracks.” In addition she wrote that, “the site of Robert Wilson’s Town Press was a power house for the trolley. Round windows on the second floor of the structure, which can be seen from Maple Avenue, once housed insulators to which power cables were attached. Abutments of the bridge that carried the trolley across Big Sister Creek remain to this day and can be seen south of the Mill Street bridge, looking toward the Penn Central Arch Bridge.”
The last B & LE Trolley had arrived in Angola at 1:00 am on January 28, 1933 and by 1934, the trolley had been replaced by motor cars as the preferred method of transportation.
In January of 2017, Mr. Jim Greene visited the Farnham Village Board meeting, presenting his “Rails to Trails” information. His idea of using the trolley line route as a hiking trail was outlined extensively in his B & E & LE Trolley Line report, which he has donated to many local historical societies along the rail trail. A copy is available for viewing in the Farnham Village Hall as well as the historical room in the Brant Town Hall. His investigation shows that the trolley lane between Farnham and Angola is in relatively good condition. It is quite an interesting thought, the possibility of re-opening the rail trail as a hiking and or biking trail.

Farnham Fire Department Ladies Drum Corp. 1940
78 years ago, the idea of a Farnham Ladies Drum Corps was conceived by Helen Watt, a music teacher who lived on Commercial Street in Farnham. She discussed her idea with Gert Wasmund Fose and together they organized the Corps in 1939. Through the years, new members were added and others left, with membership varying between 25 and 40 ladies of all age groups. During the time they were together, the Corps developed into a unit that was the envy of all others. They won numerous trophies; state, sectional and local. The Corps marched in parades near and far and in their last few years together, competed in field competitions - winning most of these. At one time the Farnham Ladies Drum Corp played for the Buffalo Bills Football Team during half-time at the Old War Memorial Stadium (aka Civic Stadium), which was affectionately referred to as the “The Rockpile”.
The Farnham Ladies Drum Corp. disbanded about 1955, however in 1989 (the Sesquicentennial year of the Town of Brant) the ladies had a reunion of sorts, participating in the Brant Parade upon a float, each wearing a matching T-shirt, created special just for the occasion. Nine of the ladies in attendance that day were chartered members of the group: Alice Marchuck (at that time she was 90 years of age), Louise Lemmler, Gert Fose, Dorothy Lawrence, Lavina Kuhlman, Esther Beuzenburg, Christine Carbeck, Lucy Nordblum and Eleanor Chiavetta. Other former members participating in the parade were: Alice Galbraith, Verna Ditcher, Jean Brunelli, Shirley Pfleuger, Joyce Cullen, Beverly Wasmund, Marge Beck, Janet Bowman, Dorothea Nordblum, Marilyn Russell, Mary Russell, Linda Lawrence, Anna Martorana, Sandra Wasmund, Shirley Estee, Rose Marie DeMaria and Jeanette Mirusso.

JUDE NOVENA
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the ninth day your prayer will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised.
