On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the WGHMS Civics Club dedicated the new Veterans Memorial located behind the Middle School off Eagle Drive.
The dedication, led by students of the Middle School Civics Club, was attended by representatives from various federal, state, and local offices, members of the American Legion Post 928, the Ladies Auxiliary Unit 928, and the VFW 5798, and many school district officials.
Students in the Middle School viewed the event in the auditorium due to the rainy weather, however that did not damper the enthusiasm of the dedication.
If you have any members of your family that serve or served in the United States military and lived, went to school, or currently reside in the Lake Shore Central School District, please forward their names to Jeffrey Ziobro, Civics Club advisor. WGHMS 8855 Erie Road, Angola, NY 14006 or email jeffrey.ziobro@lscsd.org.

A few years back, the family of Russell and Marie Dispence generously donated a collection of Brant Strawberry Festival photos and memorabilia to the historical society. This particular 1958 packet of photos included various floats and parade participants. In today’s photo, the ANGOLA Band, as designated on the base drum, is just beginning to pass the Brant Fire Hall on the Brant-Farnham Road, heading towards the Brant four corners.
As per the family section of our Brant history book, Russell and Marie moved to Brant in 1930, building a home and living on Milestrip Road. In addition to farming their land, they also ran their own business on the property, which was known as Brant Implement Service. Both Russell and Marie were very active in many community functions, including the Brant Fire Company Auxiliary, Evans Grange and also the Strawberry Festival Committees.

Most Individuals take many decades to achieve prominence in their lifetime. This was not the case of Angola’s Pius L. Schwert who died at the young age of 48.
Pius, known as Pi, was born in Angola on November 22, 1892 [125 years ago!] to Julius M. and Louisa Schwert. Growing up in Angola, Pi attended Angola Schools as well as Lafayette High School in Buffalo.
After graduation in 1910 Pi was accepted at the Wharton School of Commerce which was part of the University of Pennsylvania. At the university his leadership and athletic qualities excelled. He was a member and president of many activities including the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity, Friar’s Society of Scalp and Blade, Christian’s Association as well as several other groups.
His ability on the baseball diamond was also very much evident at the university. He played on the freshman team and soon became a member of the varsity team for the next three years. In his senior year he was captain of the team and was selected as a member of the All American College team. Pi was the catcher who batted and threw right handed.
Upon graduation in 1914, Pi signed with the New York Yankees. On August 24, 1914 he played his first major league game. His career with the Yankees was short lived ending on October 7, 1915. At the Yankees, Pi had 6 RBI’s and had a .208 batting average.
Pi came back to Angola in 1916 and operated a general store [on Commercial Street] with his father who would manage it when Pi was away. His love for baseball continued in the minor leagues with the Newark Indians in 1916 and with the Mobile Sea Gulls in 1917.
World War I interrupted his daily life and Pi became a member of the U.S. Navy. He attained the rank of Ensign while serving at the Bremerton and Philadelphia Naval yards. After the war he continued with baseball playing for the Buffalo Bisons in 1920-21.
Pi’s background in commerce at the Wharton School helped secure a position at the Bank of Angola from 19211931. He eventually became president of the bank and left when it failed due to the depression.
Following the bank’s demise Pi turned to politics. He was elected as Erie County Clerk in 1933 and served until 1938 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. As a Democrat he soundly defeated the Republican Edwin Moss, 64,250 to 44,866.
It was during his second term that his life was cut short. On March 11, 1941 after giving a speech at a dinner in Washington D.C., Pi collapsed from a fatal heart attack. Angola and Erie County lost a favorite son. Pius Schwert’s final resting place is in the Forest Avenue Cemetery in Angola.
