Kate DiMartino of Angola, New York, was recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at Syracuse University.
DiMartino is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and its territories. Its mission is to "cultivate a community that celebrates and advances the love of learning."

“Farnham Field Days” was once a yearly event sponsored by the Farnham Volunteer Fire Department. Our historical society has a few photos from this particular year of the event (1940ish) in its possession. Some of the photos
we have The parade included the Farnham Volunteer Fire Dept. marching unit and the Farnham Ladies Drum Corp., with majorette Beverly (Ahlers) Wasmund leading the way.
The two photos we chose for today, provide a glimpse of a simpler time. In each of the photos, a member of the Farnham Volunteer Fire Dept. is shown dressed in his marching uniform, which consisted of a hat, white shirt, dark tie and white shoes. If we look closely at the bottom left corner of the one photo, we can see the brick road of Commercial Street. The brick building in the background advertising “Ice Cream” is Schwert’s Store which was located on the corner. Built in 1902, this beautiful building still stands today. It is currently owned by members of the Butlak family and is now a private residence. It appears that much of the “field day” fun included soap box derby races with racing down Railroad Avenue towards Commercial Street. Soap box derbies began around 1933 and according to the Smithsonian.com article written by Paul Dickson (May 1995): “soap box derbies are spin-offs from a mix of automobile racing and downhill sledding on a Flexible Flyer. Boys and girls have a passion for anything that travels super fast – even if only down a hill under the power of gravitational pull.” Railroad Avenue in Farnham does have an incline, so we bet that must have provided plenty of speed!

The Borngraber Sisters; Jean, Verna and JoyceMembers of the Farnham Ladies Drum Corp
The Farnham Ladies Drum Corp existed during the years 19381955. The Corp began because of Helen Watt who was a local music teacher as well as an organist at Farnham’s Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Helen had the idea that Farnham should form a Corps and gathered together all interested women of the community. Most of the members over the years were friends or relatives from Farnham, Brant and the Seneca Nation. They learned to march, carry a drum, bells or a bugle, flag or banner. The girls practiced all year and marched in parades and competitions all summer. At one time the Corps played during half time at a Buffalo Bills football game at the Buffalo, N.Y. War Memorial Stadium!
The Borngraber sisters Jean, Verna and Joyce along with their mom Alice were members this talented and multiaward winning group. They lived in Brant, N.Y. on the Brant-Farnham Road. According to our notes, Jean and Verna played the snare drum and Joyce and mom Alice played the bugle.
Beverly Wasmund, long time Drum Major of the Corps wrote the following for our Farnham 125th Anniversary book, published in 2017: “The Farnham Fire Department paid for everything - the uniforms, instruments and instructors. The first uniforms were white dresses with a navy bottom, next satin blouses made by the women and blue skirts, the last was a navy wool jacket and skirt, with white shirt and tie and always stockings and white shoes. The navy jacket, shirts and hats were purchased from Brownies Uniforms in Buffalo as were the drum major and twirlers uniforms.” This photo of the Borngraber sisters gives us a glimpse of the Farnham Ladies Drum Corps’ uniform of 1947.

The business presently known as Addison Funeral Home Inc, has been proudly owned and operated for the last 44 years by the Addison Family, and the firm itself is celebrating its 140th year of continuous operation, serving the Evans, Brant, Irving, Seneca Nation Territory and surrounding communities. The history of the local business we know today is deep
First established in 1884 by furniture store owners Joseph Froehley and Jacob Friend, the two partners sold coffins as part of their furniture line out of their store front located at 48 South Main Street in the Village of Angola. In 1908, Joseph Froehley’s two sons Charles and Phillip entered the business and then operated as J. Froehley and Sons Furniture and Undertaking. This business operated at 30 North Main Street in the Village for nearly 50 years. In the late 1930’s Jene and Donald Heimburg, the nephews of Charles and Phillip Froehley, joined the firm.
In 1957 the furniture and undertaking business was split. The furniture store at 30 North Main was sold and Jene and Donald Heimburg moved the funeral business to its current location at 262 North Main Street. In 1975 the brothers changed the name of the funeral home from J. Froehley and Sons to Heimburg Funeral Home.
In May of 1981, Jay and Mary Addison purchased the Heimburg Funeral Home. In 1984, the business was renamed once again to Heimburg-Addison Funeral Home. Randy J. and Scott J. Addison, sons of Jay and Mary both earned their funeral directors licenses and joined the family business - Randy in 1987, and Scott in 1992. Together in 2012, they purchased the funeral home from their parents. After adding on an extensive 3,000 Sq. ft. addition, they changed the name to it’s current name - Addison Funeral Home, Inc. With plans to carry on the family business, Scott’s daughter, Jacey Ann Addison recently graduated from SUNY Canton with a degree in Funeral Service Administration. In addition to providing funeral and cremation services, the Addison’s sell cemetery monuments and markers to families in our community. Scott, Randy and Jacey vow to continually evolve, as did their predecessors, to meet the changing needs of the families they serve, and help them celebrate and honor the lives of their loved ones.
