Southtowns Catholic School's STREAM Gold Bridge Challenge

Students in Mrs. Joy Katra's Library class split into groups to participate in this STREAM Gold Bridge Challenge. This is part of a STREAM building and engineering project with a St. Patrick's Day Theme. The kids built a bridge using only pennies. This activity is designed to encourage critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills, as well as, problem solving and teamwork. When they were done, the bridge had to be at least 3 centimeters tall and 3 centimeters wide, stand for seconds and hold a green object.

The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce held their annu­ al President's Award & Recognition Dinner on March 25th, 2017. The event was held at The Evans Center Banquet & Conference Facility in Evans NY. ber Heather Leitten (Unique Sweets Cake Shop) prepared scrumptious desserts and Rich Borosky (Big Beat Creative Studios) provided outstanding keepsakes as the photographer. Once again, Jeff Connors was stellar in his role as master of ceremonies.

During the season of Lent, students at SS. Peter & Paul, a Community School in Hamburg, have had a variety of activities while gearing up to celebrate Easter. First grade students recently took a tour of SS. Peter & Paul Church, which was led by Pastor Rev. Arthur Mattulke. Each student had to pick 1 person and do research on them.

Each Biography had to include the person’s name, birth date, death date, what made them famous, their career, early life, why the student found them fascinating, pictures and a list of what books the student read to find their information.

From 1956 to 1971, the Strawberry Festival was a popular summertime event in the Town of Brant. The first Brant Strawberry Festival in 1956, had over 20,000 people in attendance! The festival was held on the Pero family grounds.

The Brant Fire Department, Auxiliary and countless members of the community joined in the fun and work each year, to make it a success. The Governor of N.Y., William Harriman came to visit one year, as did many local celebrities from that era; such as Bill and Mildred Miller of “Meet the Miller’s” [ WBEN TV ] and “Genny” the Genesee Beer Co. spokesperson. One year, it was recorded that 4,680 quarts of strawberries were sold during the 3 day duration of the Strawberry Festival. The Brant Strawberry Festivals created some fond memories that are still spoken of to this day.

Lake Shore Senior High Bands and Chorus Champions at National Music Competition Groups place first at Contest in New York City

The Senior High bands and chorus have returned home from New York City as Champions! The Mixed Chorus under the direction of Brittany Nichols, the Concert Band under the direction of John Kresse, and the Symphonic Band under the direction of Eric Blodgett returned from New York City all placing First in their Class at the Big Apple Performing Arts Consultants National Music Competition. In addition, the Symphonic Band was awarded the Grand Champion Award with the highest score overall out of all groups attending.

Sophomore Alyssa Perkins from our Mixed Chorus was awarded the Top Vocal Soloist and junior Madison Justinger from our Symphonic Band was awarded the Top Instrumental Soloist (alto saxophone).

The students enjoyed an incredible itinerary that included a tour to the Top of Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. The group rented studio time in downtown Manhattan and worked under the baton of three-time Grammy Award Winning Maestro David Lai, the director of the Broadway Musical Phantom of the Opera. They also worked with two of the musical's leads; Ali Ewoldt who plays Christine Daae and Rodney Ingram who plays Raoul before seeing the show that night. The students were blown away as they saw Lake Shore's own Wall of Fame Alum Dan Willis and the Birdland Jazz Club Bigband at the hottest jazz club in New York City - BIRDLAND! After the students competed at the National Music Competition on Saturday at the College of Staten Island they went on a dinner cruise on the Hudson where they learned of their great success. To culminate the tour on Sunday, the group went on an interactive bus tour to learn about the history of the city and spent time at the American Museum of Natural History.

The Music Department will be featuring Lake Shore Wall of Fame Alum and one of the top saxophonists in New York City, Dan Willis at our Guest Artist Jazz Concert on Wednesday, April 26th. The concert will feature the Elementary, Middle School, and High School Jazz Ensembles highlighted

by Mr. Willis.
