Univera Healthcare has donated eight automated external defibrillator units (AED units) to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

The donation is part of an initiative the health insurer launched several years ago that has, to date, put more than 140 AED units into service across upstate New York. Nonprofit Univera Healthcare is based in Buffalo and has more than 150,000 members across the eight counties of Western New York.

MARK COIA A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, for Mark Coia of Angola who died March 14, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Mary G. Coia (Clark); dear son of Evelyn (late Rudy); dear father of Gerald J. (Siddhartha), Mark P. Jr. (Robin) Coia, Michelle (Donald) Bielefeld and the late Johnathan J. Coia; grandfather of 14 grandchildren; survived by two sisters and two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

ROBERT G. WILLIAMS SR. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday at Blessed John Paul II Parish for Robert G. Williams Sr. of Lake View, who died March 18, 2012 at age 93.

He was the beloved husband of Dolores “Dee” (nee Peschio); devoted father of Robert Jr. (Carla) and Michael (Carrie) Williams; cherished papa of Michelle, Joe and Ciara Williams; loving great-grandpapa of Dylan Williams; also survived by Paula Williams and nieces and nephews.

Williams, known in his family as “The Chief”, was born in McKean County, PA. He served in the National Guard from 1940 to 1941 and as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1945. After WWII, he worked in Bethlehem Steel’s police department for a short time before joining the Hamburg Police Department.

He moved up from patrolman to lieutenant and was appointed chief of police in 1960, retiring in 1982. Mr. Williams’ two sons, Robert Jr. and Michael, joined the department in 1980. Robert Williams retired as a detective sergeant and Michael Williams, following in his father’s footsteps, was appointed chief in 2010. Mr. Williams was a member of the Erie County and New York State Chiefs of Police associations, the Erie County Captain and Lieutenants Association and the Western New York Association of Retired Law Enforcement Officers.

ADDISON FUNERAL RECOGNIZED IN BUSINESS FIRST The Addison Funeral Home Inc. of Angola was recognized in the March 9, 2012 Buffalo edition of Business First Magazine as being a legacy business with roots in the Evans and Brant communities dating to 1884. Owners Jay and Mary Addison have recently passed the reins of their business to sons Randy and Scott Addison with the intent of keeping it a family owned business for generations to come.

The business is believed to be one of the oldest funeral homes in the region.

It managed to survive while others were forced to merge or close. It was originally established by furniture store owners Joseph Froehley and Jacob Friend. The two partners sold coffins as part of their furniture product line from a store front at 48 South Main Street in Angola. Realizing a need to provide more service than just selling caskets to families who experienced death, Froehley and Friend began to offer undertaking services.

In 1908, two sons of Joseph Froehley, Charles and Phillip, entered the business and operated as J. Froehley and Sons Furniture and Undertaking from 30 North Main Street, for nearly 50 years. Nephews of Charles and Phillip Froehley, Jene and Donald Heimburg, joined the firm in the late 1930’s. In 1957, the furniture and undertaking business was split. The furniture store at 30 North Main was sold and Jene and Donald Heimburg moved the funeral business to its present location of 262 North Main Street, Angola.

In 1975, the Heimburg brothers changed the name of the funeral home from J. Froehley and Sons Funeral Home to Heimburg Funeral Home.

Jay and Mary Addison purchased the Heimburg Funeral Home from Jene and Donald on May 1, 1981 and added their name to the business in 1984. Randy and Scott Addison, sons of Jay Mary, both earned their

funeral directors licenses and joined the family business, Randy in 1987, and Scott in 1992. As well as providing funeral service and the sale of cemetery markers to the Evans, Brant and Angola community, Addison’s also provide professional services which include embalming, remains transfer and livery vehicles to many other funeral homes throughout southern Erie and Chautauqua Counties.

In 2012, the Addisons are celebrating their 31st year of ownership and the 128th year of their firm’s continuous operation. Highlighting their 31 years in business are several major facility renovations. Over 1000 square feet of business space and 800 square feet of living space were added to the building in 1984. The most recent changes to their business were completed in 2004 and include the amendment of the name of the funeral home from Heimburg-Addison to Addison Funeral Home and an addition of over 3000 square feet to the existing facility. Some amenities of the newest renovation include a second public entrance to the building, 1200 square feet of chapel space, two handicap accessible rest rooms, handicap elevator, merchandise selection room, and additional parking spaces.

The Addisons vow to continually evolve as did their predecessors, to meet the changing needs and requirements of the families they serve. The focus of the Addison business has changed from merely providing traditional services and products such as caskets, burial vaults and cremation urns, to offering families unique personalized experiences to help them celebrate and honor the lives of their loved ones.

She took her oath of office in the presence of the Erie County Assessor’s Association membership, her family, and Town of Cheektowaga Supervisor Mary Holtz.

Jeneen resides in the Town of Evans with her family.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced that bridge construction will continue on the NY Route 5 Bridge over Eighteen Mile Creek, in the town of Hamburg and Evans, Erie County, beginning on Tuesday, March 20. As a result, work zone traffic controls will be put in place in the vicinity of the NY Route 5 Bridge over Eighteen Mile Creek thru November 2012.

NY Route 5 will remain open in both the eastbound and westbound directions during construction.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

Several local elected officials took part in the national “Mayors for Meals” campaign by delivering meals to the homebound elderly and disabled served through Meals on Wheels for Western New York, an independent nonprofit organization serving more than 1,800 individuals daily in Erie County.

Mayors for Meals, a campaign sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America, raises awareness of senior nutrition programs and educates the community on ways to get involved to help end senior hunger. Delegates supported Meals on Wheels for Western New York by partnering with meal delivery volunteers and personally hand-delivering meals to homebound residents in their district.

“Our volunteers are such an integral role of our organization. Each weekday, they travel more than 1,200 miles to deliver nourishing food to the homebound,” said Tara Ellis, president and chief executive officer at Meals on Wheels for Western New York.

Meals on Wheels for Western New York is one of the largest volunteer-based human service agencies in the region with more than 1,500 meal delivery volunteers. The organization seeks additional volunteers to help reduce the number of people being waitlisted to receive home-delivered meals.

“Through the support of local delegates, the vital service Meals on Wheels provides in our community is spotlighted,” Ellis said. “There is no greater time than now to become a volunteer and help enrich the lives of our homebound neighbors.”

All residential brush burning is prohibited in smaller communities during the state’s historically high fire-risk period from March 16 through May 14, state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens reminded New Yorkers recently.

“This time of year has the most risk of fires and the risk is even greater this year due to the extremely mild winter we’ve seen across the state,” Commissioner Martens said. “Since the open burning regulation passed in 2009, there have been fewer fires reported in New York State. In an effort to protect the health and safety of our children,

families and our natural environment, we remind residents that brush burning is banned statewide beginning this week.”

In 2009, New York toughened restrictions on open burning to reduce harmful air pollutants and help prevent wildfires.

While the burn ban regulation allows residential brush burning for most of the year in towns with a population of less than 20,000, it prohibits open burning in all communities during early spring when the bulk of New York’s wildfires typically occur.

The state regulation prohibits the burning of garbage at all times and in all places. ________

TOWN EMPLOYEES RAISE $1030 FOR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

On Monday, March 19, 2012, the Evans Town Clerk’s Office distributed the proceeds of the 2011 Town of Evans Employee “Dress Down for a Cause” to four local organizations at a small ceremony held at the Town Hall. Representatives from the Angola Public Library, Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore, and Lake Shore High School Student Government (Adopt-a-Family at Christmas program) were on hand to accept checks in the amount of $257.50 for their organization. A representative from the Madison Mc-Carthy Foundation was not available, but sent their sincere appreciation for the donation.

Dress-Down for a Cause has been an Evans Town Hall tradition for almost a decade. It was initiated by former Town Clerk Carol Meissner and has been kept alive by current Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino. In January of each year, partici

pating Town employees elect a specified amount to be deduction from their payroll and in return they are allowed to relax the professional dress code each Friday. At the end of the year, employers vote from a list of local charities, and the top 4 vote getters receive the funds.

“The generosity of Town employees never ceases to amaze me,” said Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino.

“The annual contributions have helped numerous local organizations continue their good work in our community,” she said.

IMMACULATA HOLDS LANGUAGE FAIR All the sights, sounds and cuisines from places like Belgium, Singapore and Luxembourg wrapped the Immaculata Academy cafeteria in a distinct international flavor during the fourth annual World Language Fair.

Over 150 students from all grade levels were split into groups and assigned a country to present. The students brought their countries to life through culturally specific clothing, music, dance and - of course - snacks. Each group set up displays featuring dioramas, samples of their country’s popular exports, and other illustrations shedding light on the way of life in their country.

The students representing Austria, who won best presentation, featured authentic Austrian goods, such as a communion book in German that was passed down through family to

sophomore Liz Musial, of Lancaster.

Students presenting Indonesia featured an authentic dress passed through family, and those showcasing Belgium may have presented the day’s most popular item, illustrating one of Belgium’s most famous products with a chocolate fountain.

EVANS DEMO CLUB NEWS

Club recording secretary Kathy Karyczak led the Evans Democratic Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the March 2012 meeting.

Town councilman Paul Cooper reported that the Town of Evans is awaiting a state auditor’s report, which is expected by June 1, 2012.

He is looking for a volunteer to run the Taste of Evans Chinese Auction, which will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2012. Club corresponding secretary Dawn Casali volunteered to chair this.

DiMartino was recently recognized by the New York Town Clerk’s Association and has achieved its Registered Municipal Clerk Certification.

Angola Mayor Howard M. “Hub” Frawley discussed how local governments had pushed for pension reform. He is pleased to report that the Tier 6 Pension Reform bill was passed by the state senate and assembly. Frawley is confident that the Governor will sign this, since it had been one of his announced priorities.

Frawley recently met with Governor Cuomo during a gathering of the New York State Conference of Mayors.

Frawley discussed his involvement with the Countywide land banking effort.

Currently tens of thousands of idle properties sit on local property tax rolls, abandoned by their owners. When the tax liability exceeds the value, there is no interest in purchasing the property. Land banking will offer a way to sell distressed properties. He closed by noting that the Village of Angola tax rate remained the same for 2012.

Democratic Town Chair Robert “Bob-Cat” Catalino introduced two new members to the club: Chuck Klepfer III and Joe Ianni.

He noted that the New York State presidential primary is 4/24/12. He pushed back against efforts to reduce the number of polling places open in the Town of Evans, and succeeded in ensuring that voters will go to their usual location. He has developed a list of

53 Democratic elections inspectors.

In other political news, he noted that under the new districts for the House of Representatives, Evans will no longer be represented by Congressman Brian Higgins. It will be in the district now represented by Kathy Hochul. The date for the primary, which used to be in September, may fall on June 24, 2012. The state assembly passed a bill for that date, however, it awaits state senate and governor assent.

Coming up: The annual picnic will be held on Sunday, August 5th. Also the Southtowns Democratic Club, currently headed by president Fran McLaughlin, will hold an event at Sturgeon Point Marina on June 10, 2012.

LS FRESHMEN STUDY DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE

Most people who admit to using drugs will admit that when they started using, they did not truly understand the negative consequences drug abuse would have on them later on in life. They were ignorant or simply did not care. However, the freshmen students in Lake Shore 2015: Freshmen Seminar cannot plead such ignorance. They have spent the last month learning about the real-life, blunt, and at times shocking, truths about prescription/street drug use and binge drinking. For example, statistics show that the majority of high school and college students who experiment with drugs usually suffer from low selfesteem, problems making goals and/or are simply curious about drug use.

Although some students were very honest about experimenting with drugs or alcohol, they now understand the fact that those bad

choices were part of their past, and we are concerned about today and tomorrow.

Students are no longer ignorant about the fact that using such drugs can lead to addiction, mental/social/ physical illness and eventual death. Many students were particularly shocked about the statistics that proved people who experiment with drugs are more likely to harm their reproductive organs and/or future children.

Mr. Connors asked them this question: “Why should your or my future children pay for our bad and selfish choices in our teen years?”

Mr. Connors also encourages all parents reading this article to truly consider the importance of sitting down with their children and discussing the blunt realities of abusing drugs and alcohol; knowledge is power!

LSC SENIOR MUSICIANS EXPERIENCE BPO

On Wednesday, March 21, members of the Lake Shore Senior High Symphony Orchestra got the opportunity to see and hear the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at the historic Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo.

This year’s program was entitled “West Side Stories” and featured the BPO in collaboration with the African American Cultural Center’s Dance and Drum Performance Company.

They also featured 17-year-

old Alexandra Alvarado Switala, violin soloist, this year’s winner of the Sphinx Competition which is a national competition for Black and Latino string players.

The West Side of Buffalo is haven to our newest immigrant populations and has become an internationally diverse community. The BPO celebrated and connected with its neighbors through this concert experience. The students were thoroughly entertained and educated at the same time.

THE “LEGEND” TO APPEAR AT HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Antiques, oddities, and treasures will be the topic of the program at the Evans Historical Society meeting on Monday, March 26. Mr. Enrique Jimenez of the ‘Legend’ antique store on North Main St. in Angola will bring several items from his collection to exhibit. Mr. Jimenez specializes in art work, silver, jewelry, gold and pocket watches and will provide informal appraisals of various antiques.

The public is invited to the meeting and is encouraged to bring an antique to display or learn more about. Mr. Jimenez and society members may be able to help identify “mystery” artifacts as well as providing additional information regarding the value of the item.

Pomona Grange will hold its 40th Annual Spring Flea Market and a second one will be held in October. The flea markets are the main fundraisers for their community service projects.

The annual Legislative Luncheon at Ilio DiPaolo’s on April 21st is an opportunity to hear presentations from several of our legislators.

Each year Granges honor a special person in their community with a Community Citizen Award. This year Evans Grange will honor Police Chief Ernie Masullo at a special dinner on May 5th.
