A Re-enactor’s Tale; The life of O.H. Dibble (1861 – 1894)
At the Evans Historical Society’s summer event held on July 23rd at the Forest Avenue Cemetery, one of the Historical Society members and re-enactors, Rick LaClair, gave his presentation on his great-grandfather - O.H. Dibble. Rick was dressed in mid-late 1800 style clothing - wearing a top hat, white shirt, and a vest - look-
ing quite dapper! He carried with him some articles to use as props which you will read more about in
his presentation. Because he is a direct descendant of “O.H.”, Rick had more than a few snippets of his family history passed down through the years to keep our attention!
As mentioned in earlier articles, we are sharing Rick’s presentation so that those who could not attend the July event, may enjoy the opportunity to learn about an early town of Evans resident and his family. We relay the story using Rick’s own words:
“O.H. Dibble was born in 1861 at Grand View Bay, Evans. In those days families migrated west along the Lake Erie shore, as his family did about 1818.
By 1861, the railroad came to Angola, and many shoreline people chose to move the Village of Angola to enjoy travel and shops. When O.H. married Sarah Laverty, he built a home at 29

He was a carpenter. In his “Excelsior Diary” for 1884, he worked at Gages as a carpenter for 8 hours on April 15, 1884, for “$1.60”!
He worked also at Lythe Tile Works. While on the job he enjoyed making
decorative objects out of clay, such as an umbrella stand and planters. His son, Leroy, later married Gertrude Lythe.
His hobby was making puzzles. He turned a puzzle called “Fox and Geese” (See photo). He did not have a lathe to turn the walnut and maple, so he made one out of pine and used nails on back of faceplate to index points of the star.
When he died in 1894, at the age of A
33, he left a wife, and four children bereft. They formed an ice cream store in Angola to survive. It was his fireman’s insurance policy which helped pay for his burial.
His name was Orange Hezikiah Dibble. His father was Orange James, and his grandfather was Orange Hezikiah Dibble. He named one of his sons, Orange Marvin. Why “Orange”? When the Puritans were evicted from England, it was William of Orange, ruler of the Netherlands, who welcomed the Puritans and helped then obtain ships to the new land. We honor William who lost his life to save us. According to the song, “America the Beautiful”, it is the Puritans whose feet walked across America and to Evans too.”

Emily Thomas, of Angola, New York, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Thomas was initiated at State University of New York at Cortland.
Thomas is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
