Boys & Girls Club Christmas Party

Members and families of the Boys & Girls Club of Eden really got into the Christmas spirit over the past two weeks.

Two weeks ago, they rehearsed, then performed Christmas carols for families in the Club neighborhood, as well as the residents of Absolut Care. This past week, members came to the Club for the annual Christmas party, at which they played games, made treats, won prizes, and got to see a very special guest. Families have also been participating in the Club’s Tree of Warmth by bringing in new and gently used winter clothes to benefit homeless women and children at the Matt Urban Hope House in Buffalo. Happy Holidays from the staff, board, and kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Eden!

“Twas a Music- Filled Day” for North Collins Students

December 11 was a very busy day for members of Musically Yours and NCA (North Collins A Cappella). The two select ensembles begun their annual Holiday Tour at Musacchio Gardens in North Collins to spread some holiday cheer where they shared delicious cookies. The chorus students then traveled to Hospice in Cheektowaga where they caroled quietly through the halls and passed out handmade cards lovingly designed by Mrs. Warren's and Mrs. Riethmiller's second grade classes. After a brief stop for lunch, the last destination was Eden Heights. The students and residents sang along on many of the carols, which added to the joy of the whole day. In the evening, members of Musically Yours traveled to the University at Buffalo to listen to their women's a cappella group, "The Royal Pitches." The Pitches are the female version of our ever-popular "Buffalo Chips." In between sets, Lake Effect Harmony Chorus performed so our girls could hear a cappella singing at the college level and at the adult level. __________

The Eden Up-to-Date Club, a local women’s club founded in 1894, has been collecting donations from its members to support a local cause each holiday season for a number of years. The Boys & Girls Club of Eden has been the group’s charity of choice for the past 3 Christmases and their support has done great things for Eden’s youth. Two years ago, the holiday donations were used to take lowincome children on summer field trips to places they might not otherwise have the opportunity to visit, such as the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester and to see a live performance of The Sound of Music at Artpark. The Christmas funds from 2014 were used to enhance the Cooking Club program, which teaches youth the benefits of developing healthy habits such as eating smart and being physically active; equips them with skills to adopt healthier habits by participating in fun learning activities; and encourages them to make positive behavior changes. The donation enabled the Cooking Club to purchase much needed kitchen equipment, including a griddle, a blender, brand new baking sheets and cutting boards, and new pots and pans. The donation also partially covered the cost of a year’s worth of food ingredients for the program. In 2015, over 100 youth participated in Cooking Club, with a core group of 17 members attending 10 or more sessions. Lessons over the past year have addressed MyPlate and the food groups, specific vitamins and minerals, the importance of exercise, and other topics on nutrition, but have also included topics like the migration of foods to the United States from different cultures and international cuisine.

This Christmas, Up-to-Date members chose to give their holiday money to the Club again and raised more than ever! This donation will be put toward the Boys & Girls Club’s scholarship program, which covers the cost of Club membership, either in part or whole, for children on the free and reduced lunch programs at school. So far this school year, the Club has 32 youth participating in the scholarship program, which accounts for nearly 30% of its membership. With the funding from Up to Date, the Boys & Girls Club will be able to cover the cost of a school-year membership for four children on full scholarship and one on partial scholarship.

The Up-to-Date Club is Eden’s oldest active organization and was instrumental in establishing the Eden Library in 1911. Though certainly a social club, it is also a study club, the objective of which is to promote literary, social, and cultural interests.
