$20,000 in Scholarships Available from the Fairgrounds

As part of the Fairgrounds’ effort to foster education and success in students, the Erie County Agricultural Society and the Erie County Fair will be awarding $20,000 in scholarships to high school seniors and college students.

The Erie County Fair is offering scholarships to students who are pursuing all fields of study. Students must be enrolling or enrolled in an accredited college or university.

Applicants must have participated in the Erie County Fair for eligibility. Participation can include but is NOT limited to employment, exhibition, volunteering, marching band, or other performances.

To apply for the Erie County Agricultural Society’s scholarship the applicant must be enrolling or enrolled in an accredited college or university. The college does not have to be within New York State to qualify. Students must be pursuing a career tied to agriculture and must be able to describe how their field of study will help them in their agricultural endeavors. The mission statement of the Erie County Agricultural Society states that our purpose “is to preserve and enhance the agricultural and historical legacy of New York State,” and our scholarship winners must reflect this mission in their academic goals.

Applications are made available to students through their high school and colleges or online at ecfair.org. 4-H participants can receive an application at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension 4-H Office located at 21 South Grove Street in East Aurora.

Scholarship application postmark deadline is April 10, 2015.

David C. Wappman of Hamburg, NY died Wednesday, February 4, 2015 in Mercy Hospital at age 78.

He was born January 13, 1937. Son of the late Vincent and Catherine Wappman.

He was the loving father of Sheryl (Douglas) Hage, Sandra (Kevin) Prentice, Stacy (William) Cox and Patricia (Kevin) Genson; a brother of Joseph (Theodora) and James (Linda) Wappman. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Jeremy and Christopher Krencik.

David was a member of the Southtowns Walleye Association, the North Boston Fire Company and the Teamsters. Also, he was a member of the Boston Valley Conservation Club and started up the Pistol League. David was an owner/operator for Wappman Brother’s Trucking in Hamburg, NY for over 20 years and also worked for Bethlehem Steel for over 10 years. He enjoyed NASCAR, from watching races on TV to attending the Daytona 500.

Also, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Family and friends called February 19, 2015 at the Laing Funeral Home Inc. 2724 W. Church St. Eden. A Memorial Mass was held at 10AM February 21, 2015 in St. Peter and Paul Church, Hamburg.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southtowns Walleye Assn. 5895 S.W. Blvd. Hamburg NY. Eden JR/SR High’s Musical Hello Dolly

Eden JR/SR High School will present Hello Dolly, a musical based on the play “The Matchmaker” by Thornton Wilder with music and lyrics by Jerry Heman and book

by James Michael Stewart on March 6, 7, & 8, 2015. This classic musical has won several awards and was performed thousands of times on Broadway with Carol Channing as Dolly Levi. Some of this show’s memorable songs include Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Ribbons Down My Back, Before the Parade Passes By, Elegance, It Only Takes A Moment and So Long , Dearie. This is definitely a familyfriendly, fun show you won’t want to miss!

Eden’s production is a student driven club production where students contribute to costume and set creation, as well as many other off-stage aspects of the production as well as performing on stage, performing with the pit orchestra and staffing the stage crew. It is a show that also involves many family members and school and community members as well! See our Pennysaver ad next week for more details.

Boys & Girls Club News

At the Boys & Girls Club of Eden, the members like to compete. This week, they had to use a random assortment of materials and attempt to build the tallest tower. While some members went to work and tried building a skyscraper, others tried making more of a ‘cement’ structure. They all participated and were excited to compete, but unfortunately, none of the towers could stand up on their own.

The members learned about geometry and construction during this hands-on activity. ____________

Evelyn (nee Linsler) Falk of Collins, passed February 6, 2015, at age103. She was born September 30, 1911. Beloved wife of the late Elmore C. "Jake" Falk; daughter of the late William and Margaret Linsler; sister of the late Clayton W. and Kenneth Linsler. Friends called Wednesday February 11 at the First Congregational Church, North Collins, where funeral services followed. Arrangements by Wentland Funeral Home, North Collins. Mrs. Falk was a retired teacher from North Collins School. Also, she was a member of the First Congregational Church of North Collins, New York State Teachers Association and Past Matron of the former Arcana Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She received her education at Fredonia State University and taught school for forty years. She spent the remainder of her life traveling, collecting antiques and flower gardening. ___________

Again this past year, the students, faculty and staff of Eden Elementary School, The Eden Teachers Association, and the Elementary Drama Club, collected donations and recycled bottles to raise money to assist Honor Flight Buffalo in carrying out their mission - to fly America's veterans at no charge to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their sacrifices. Boys & Girls Club News

At the Boys & Girls Club of Eden, the members like to compete. This week, they had to use a random assortment of materials and attempt to build the tallest tower. While some members went to work and tried building a skyscraper, others tried making more of a ‘cement’ structure. They all participated and were excited to compete, but unfortunately, none of the towers could stand up on their own.
