Chipping Sodbury Festival 2021
More on page 24
The stage is set for the return of the Chipping Sodbury Festival this summer with many of the events and activities based on this year's theme of 'Heroes'.
From Asterix to Zatara, window displays in the Town, and the floats at the Lion’s Carnival on Saturday 26 June, will all be challenged to celebrate their favourite Heroes. We challenge you to don your cape or crown and join in all the festivities.
We all know that some super heroes don’t wear capes and during the last twelve months a different kind of hero has emerged, nationally and also from within our own communities. This could be an opportunity for you to highlight the contribution they have made to lives during the past year.
However you choose to join in during June and July you’ll find some of your all-time favourites. 'Spot the Error’ trail, Quiz Night, Bike Rides and an evening of wine tasting will all run alongside free talks, taster sessionsfor Yoga and Bridge and new on-line events for 2021.
Let’s make it one to remember!
Full details of all the events and activities can be found at Spiderman’s home page on the World Wide Web(!) or – www.chippingsodburyfestival.com and on the Chipping Sodbury Festival Facebook page.
“I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” –Superman

Paul and Wendy Whittle married on the 3rd June 1961. This year they are celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with their family and closest friends. In their 60 years of marriage they have accomplished a number of amazing things for themselves and their community. Paul and Wendy have two daughters, Louise and Jayne. They also have five grandchildren, all of whom they have proudly supported.
For years Paul and Wendy have been integral parts within the Chipping Sodbury community, holding various roles on the council. Both Paul and Wendy were voted to be mayor of Chipping Sodbury for several years, along with holding the position of council chair for nearly 20 years. They have both been incredibly dedicated to their jobs, even ensuring to attend meetings in heavy December snow.
Not only this, but they have taken massive strides to show their community how much they care. Paul and Wendy have protected the St John’s Way field from overdevelopment, helped ensure an increase in funding into local schools and supported local charities. In 2013 Paul and Wendy opened the Waitrose store on Barnhill Quarry and it is still flourishing to this day, sitting just a short walk from the High Street where visitors to the store will be able to support smaller local businesses. They also helped to push through funds to open the Chipping Sodbury Sports Hall in 2010, giving the secondary school new facilities and also creating a space for out of school hours clubs for the young and old alike.
Wendy has dedicated a number of years to the Sodbury Players and is an honorary member. Paul has given an incredible amount of time and support to Chipping Sodbury Rugby and Football clubs.
With the relaxing of COVID restrictions Paul and Wendy are glad to be able to celebrate 60 years of happiness with the people they love. They and their loved ones are both looking forward to the celebration of their Diamond Anniversary and the family their marriage has built around them.

TONY HARCOURT 1949 – 2021
A POPULAR AND WELL KNOWN OSTEOPATH OF HORSE STREET, CHIPPING SODBURY by Andrew Webb Co Chair of the Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce.
Tony lived and worked in the town and nearby areas for some 40 years. Residents and business folk were shocked to hear Tony died suddenly and unexpectedly in January (2021).
Tony came to live and work in this area with his wife, Jean, in 1979. He worked with Clifford Davies in Wotton-under-Edge and also in Pierrepont Street, Bath.
In 1994 he opened his practice in Horse Street, Chipping Sodbury.
He was a man with many interests including Archery being also a skilled Fletcher. Tony had a great love of history and was a medieval re-enactor for many years. He also enjoyed carpentry and timber framing in particular. He had an allotment where he excelled in growing vegetables, parsnips being his speciality. Professionally he was a much respected man who had a real skill in dealing with the aches and pains of his many patients.
Tony retired at the end of 2020 and spent the first and sadly the last year of retirement in lockdown.
Jean has received many messages and letters of condolence which have been very much appreciated. Jean thinks there are many people who knew Tony but are still unaware of his death. Due to the current restrictions in terms of meeting with people the “Chipping Sodbury Grapevine” has been somewhat slowed down.
