SEASON

The prime season runs from September through May, avoiding the windy midsummer months. Fall and spring offer prime conditions for giant trevally and permit, while bonefish, triggerfish, and bluefin trevally are consistent throughout. Milkfish feed aggressively during plankton blooms in spring and fall. This Indian Ocean nation consists of 115 islands spread across nearly 870,000 square miles. The heart of the fishery lies in remote outer atolls such as Alphonse, Cosmoledo, Providence, Astove, and Farquhar – each defined by vast flats, pristine inner lagoons, and reef edges that drain and flood with extreme tides. The geography combines hard-bottom flats, white sand shallows, and steep bluewater drop-offs that put often-times pelagic species within reach. The result is a setting that feels wild and largely untouched, offering anglers the sense of fishing in a place that is still at the beginning of its story.

Seychelles Alphonse Island Resort is the most versatile, full-service, high-end destination in the Seychelles – pairing world-class flats fishing with upscale accommodations, great dining, and a full suite of non-angling activities. The flats that surround Alphonse are home to prolific bonefish populations as well as giant trevally, triggerfish, milkfish, Indo-Pacific permit, and dozens of additional species. Anglers also have access to offshore opportunities for wahoo and sailfish. Each week is limited to 12 rods, ensuring low pressure across the fishery’s 10,000 acres of flats. For couples or mixed groups, Alphonse perfectly balances adventure with exceptional comfort.

Seychelles Farquhar is the southernmost atoll in the Seychelles and without question one of the most diverse. The fishery is home to bonefish, Indo-Pacific permit, multiple species of trevally and triggers, and the coveted bumphead parrotfish – a species almost always targeted while wading. The atoll’s guesthouse accommodates 10 anglers per week with air-conditioned rooms, great meals, and easy and immediate access to the surrounding flats. Guests walk from the lodge directly to the skiffs each morning, and long days on the water are always prioritized. Farquhar remains a prime choice for anglers seeking species variety and remote, lightly-pressured flats.

Seychelles Astove is rugged, remote, and intimate – a small island program accommodating only six anglers per week. Fishing here is varied and includes everything from wading whitesand flats to exploring coral edges, deep channels, and the bluewater drop-offs of the famed “Wall,” which falls away from shallow flats into depths of more than 3,000 feet. This is a destination for anglers who enjoy wild and technical fishing opportunities in a challenging but rewarding environment. The guesthouse is comfortable and close to the flats, making Astove one of the most exclusive and unique fisheries in the Indian Ocean.

Seychelles Providence Atoll is the most out-of-the-way expeditionary program in the Seychelles – ideal for anglers seeking an adventurous live-aboard experience. The fishery is vast and untouched, with huge numbers of giant trevally, bumphead parrotfish, triggerfish, and trophy-sized bonefish. Anglers stay aboard the MV Maya’s Dugong, a refitted research vessel built specifically for long-range trips. The mothership carries purpose-built skiffs, allowing for shallow-draft access across the waters of the massive atoll. Providence is known for challenging fishing, big rewards, and the ability to deliver one of the last true frontier experiences in saltwater angling.

COSMOLEDO ATOLL

Seychelles Cosmoledo is considered one of the world’s greatest giant trevally fisheries, delivering explosive action in one of the wildest flats environments on earth. The land-based Cosmoledo Eco Lodge accommodates 10 anglers weekly with air-conditioned rooms, satellite Wi-Fi, excellent meals, and a beautiful setting. Anglers fish both on foot and by skiff, targeting GTs alongside triggerfish, bonefish, permit, and dozens of other species. A two-to-one angler-to-guide ratio ensures personal attention, with single-angler packages always an option. Availability is extremely limited, as Cosmoledo remains the most sought-after and hardest-tobook program in the Seychelles.

POIVRE ATOLL & ST. JOSEPH’S ATOLL

Seychelles Poivre and St. Joseph’s are niche, small-atoll destinations that collectively offer some of the best Indo-Pacific permit fishing in the entire Indian Ocean. Accessed using the 75-foot Quo Vadis catamaran mothership, the program accommodates just four anglers per week with two guides.

This small footprint ensures an intimate, permit-focused experience. While anglers will encounter bonefish and giant trevally, these atolls are all about chasing permit on remote, unpressured flats. This is a trip that combines exploration with comfort, as the catamaran provides private cabins, an attentive crew, and shallow-draft skiffs for daily access.

UNDERSTANDING TIDES A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO MAKING SMARTER DECISIONS FOR YOUR NEXT SALTWATER TRIP. Many factors determine how a saltwater flats trip will ultimately play out, and most of them – weather, wind direction, barometric pressure, and visibility – are impossible to predict in advance. One key factor we can study and use to plan more effectively, however, is tides. That said, of all the variables saltwater anglers study and obsess over, few are as confusing or misunderstood as tides. For traveling anglers who want to maximize time and opportunity on the flats, understanding how tides work – and how they apply to different destinations – is one of the smartest steps you can take when planning your next trip.

Back to Basics: Why the Water Moves Tides are driven by the gravitational pull of the moon and, to a lesser degree, the sun. Because the moon is closer to Earth, its pull is the dominant force, creating predictable cycles of rising and falling water. The moon completes its orbit around the Earth every 29.5 days, giving us four major lunar stages: new moon, first quarter, full moon, and third quarter. Each stage creates different tidal strengths and ranges.

Most coastal areas experience what are called semidiurnal tides, meaning two highs and two lows

roughly every 25 hours. In some places, the highs and lows are unequal, creating what’s called a mixed semidiurnal tide. A few rare areas, like parts of the Gulf of Mexico, experience diurnal tides, with just one high and one low each day. Understanding which type your fishery has can be step one in predicting water movement and planning your fishing days.

Why Predictions Aren’t Perfect

Tide charts and online forecasts are excellent tools, but it’s important to remember that they’re still just predictions based on lunar and solar movements. Local conditions can – and often do –alter those predictions. Factors like shoreline shape, bay or lagoon size, prevailing winds, and even atmospheric pressure can all play a role, and it is therefore totally possible to have two lodges just 20 miles apart report very different tidal behaviors on the same day!

• Wind: Strong offshore winds can push water away from the shoreline, exaggerating low tides. Onshore winds can also “stack” water against the flats, muting or even eliminating expected lows.

• Weather Systems: High pressure can suppress sea levels, creating lower-than-predicted tides, while low pressure often results in higher-than-predicted tides.

• Geography: Narrow channels, reef passes, and estuary mouths can funnel or accelerate tidal flow, creating localized conditions that differ dramatically from posted charts.

Destination by Destination

Not all fisheries react to tides in the same way, which is why when you book with Yellow Dog, your program manager will discuss tidal factors and conditions specific to your chosen location.

• Indian Ocean Atolls (Seychelles and St. Brandon): Enormous tidal swings with very high highs and very low lows. Guides must constantly move anglers across flats, channels, and lagoons to stay with fish as water floods and drains. Timing and location are everything here.

• Pacific Atolls (Christmas Island): Known for dramatic tidal exchanges across reef passes and lagoons. Wide flats flood and drain on predictable cycles, often creating long wading opportunities on falling tides. The expansive nature of the atoll means anglers must carefully match tide timing to specific zones, and moving just a mile or two can completely change conditions.

• The Yucatán: More modest tidal ranges, even on spring tides. With surrounding land masses and generally shallower waters, water movement is gentler.

Fishing remains productive, but “windows” of peak action are often longer and less extreme than with other destinations.

• Bahamas & Cuba: Classic flats destinations with moderate tidal ranges. Because of the sheer number of islands, cays, and creeks, tidal timing and flow can vary widely between locations. Flats may fish differently even within the same island group, making local knowledge essential. In many areas, falling tides often concentrate fish along edges and creeks, creating prime wading conditions.

• Central America (Belize and Honduras): Tidal shifts are important, but prevailing winds, lagoon systems, and bay configurations often play just as big a role.

Local wind direction can dramatically enhance or mute predicted tides.

What It Means for the Fish

Fish such as bonefish, permit, and even tarpon respond to moving water because bait responds to moving water.

Shrimp, crabs, and baitfish ride the currents, and predators follow. The key isn’t whether the tide is rising or falling – it’s understanding what species will be available, where they’ll move, and how to intercept them. A good guide knows how to adjust to changing tides. There’s no “perfect tide” everywhere, only conditions that create different opportunities.

• Bonefish: Often feed aggressively on a flooding tide when new flats become accessible. On an ebb tide, they move back toward channels and deeper edges.

• Permit: Less predictable, but often show up to hunt crabs when new water floods shallow grass flats. Permit also loves the flow of water and a current over their backs.

• Tarpon: Tarpon generally like a current. Juvenile tarpon in mangroves will slide with the tide; migratory

adults in passes and channels often feed hardest on moving water.

• Snook: Frequently station themselves on mangrove edges, points, and creek mouths where tidal currents funnel bait.

Spring vs. Neap Tides

• Spring Tides occur just after new and full moons, when the tidal range is greatest. Expect higher highs and lower lows, faster-moving water, and more dramatic shifts. Fishing windows can be shorter but explosive, with lots of life moving around.

• Neap Tides occur around quarter moons, when tidal ranges are minimal. Water movement is slower, allowing for longer fishing periods and easier wading.

While not as dramatic as spring tides, neaps often provide longer, more consistent opportunities.

Putting It All Together

So how do you pick “the right tides”? The truth is, there’s no universal answer. Instead, think about what you want from the trip. Do you want more wading time and longer fishing sessions? A neap tide may be best. Are you after big tidal swings and explosive fish movement? Aim for spring tides.

But here’s the bigger point: tides are only one of many factors that determine how a trip unfolds. We tend to fixate on tides because they’re predictable – you can look up charts months in advance. Yet wind, weather, visibility, and barometric pressure often play an equal or even greater role in fishing success, and those are impossible to know until you’re on site.

I get this question from nearly every guest preparing for a trip to the Indian Ocean and other popular saltwater destinations. Over my years of traveling and working in the salt, I’ve found some great solutions to common problems when it comes to staying organized and having exactly what I need while on the water. While some of this might seem obvious, I hope you walk away with a clearer idea of how to streamline your gear so you can stay efficient while traveling and fishing the salt!

Choosing the Right Waterproof Bag

First – and probably most obvious – is finding the right waterproof backpack for the job. Most companies offer something in this category, but it’s important to understand the features that make a bag versatile and durable enough for multiple trips.

I prefer a zippered option because it allows quick access and lets me open the bag wide enough to see everything inside, whereby avoiding the dreaded “black hole” or bottomless pit effect.

Waterproof zippers also add a layer of security when traveling through airports, as any tampering would be noticeable. I also look for a bag with a thick bottom that can withstand repeated contact with coral, sand, and anti-slip boat decks, all of which can wear down materials over time. Internally, I appreciate having at least one small pocket near the top for essentials like keys, wallet, and phone while traveling. It’s also a handy spot for items like electrolyte tablets that I want easy access to on the water. Remember, this backpack will likely double as your carry-on, so it should be big enough to hold a laptop, travel documents, a spare change of clothes, noise-cancelling headphones, and a water bottle.

Modular Add-Ons

The Yeti Sidekick exterior pouch has become an indispensable addition to my setup. It can attach to just about any waterproof backpack or be worn as a waist pack when I want to downsize while wade fishing. It’s perfect for storing sunscreen, used flies, a small fly box, and a Ziplock bag with toilet paper for lens cleaning or other obvious uses.

Internal Inserts and Cubes

Waterproof backpacks are notorious for turning gear into a jumbled mess. That’s why I never go without an internal organizer. The Fishpond Thunderhead backpack insert is a must, and it fits most waterproof bags. This allows me to customize compartments for fly boxes, spare sunglasses, a water bottle, and a small camera. Another key piece of organization is the Patagonia Black Hole Packing Cube. I use it to store leaders, tippet, spare fly lines, and other accessories.

Depending on the size, having two cubes can also help keep your checked luggage organized.

Example Gear List (Seychelles Trip)

The contents of my bag vary depending on the destination, but here’s what I typically have in my day pack when fishing the saltwater flats: • Rain Jacket - Rolled into its hood or a stuff sack for easy storage in the skiff.

• Fly Wallet - The most efficient way to carry large flies without taking up much space.

• Smaller Fly Box - I prefer a double-sided box with crabs on one side and shrimp/bonefish flies on the other. Two separate boxes are always an option as well.

• Black Hole Cube #1- In this small cube, I pack a spare fly line, SA travel line winder, small scissors, fly line loops, and braid for nail knots.

• Black Hole Cube #2- Lens wipes, tippet spools, tapered leaders, electrical tape, lighter, superglue, and cash for guide tips.

• Water Bottle - I use an insulated Yeti to prevent condensation inside the waterproof bag. Big enough to last the morning.

• Spare Sunglasses with Strap - I always bring two pairs: one for low light and one for bright days.

• Ziplock Bag, Toilet Paper, Hand Sanitizer - Great for cleaning lenses and emergency bathroom use.

• Camera – While I usually rely on my phone (slipped into a waterproof case) some people want a DSLR body or slightly larger camera.

• Electrolytes - Many saltwater destinations use desalinated water, which lacks essential nutrients. One tablet a day keeps you fishing all day.

• Sunscreen – Usually packed in an external pocket or zip lock bag. Also include lip protection.

• Snacks – Energy bars, beef jerky, etc.

Other optional items you may want to consider adding to your kit (based on personal preference and destination): Multi-tool, small headlamp, electrolyte tablets, bandana, small travel speaker.

What Yellow Dog’s 5-Weight Fly Rod Invitational Reveals

I

n a sport full of opinions about fly rods – and plenty of subjective “best of ” lists – Yellow Dog Flyfishing set out in 2025 to build something different. The 5-Weight Fly Rod Invitational was designed to be one of the most comprehensive, transparent rod evaluations ever done in flyfishing. In partnership with The Anglers Academy, every major rod manufacturer carried by Yellow Dog participated, and three elite, unaffiliated casters – John Juracek, John Hudgens, and Whitney Gould – tested each rod across three rigorously designed courses: dry fly, nymph, and streamer. The goal wasn’t to crown a single champion, but to clearly show how each rod performed in real-world fishing scenarios.

Months after the project launch, we’ve listened closely to the conversations across social media, message boards, fly shops, and inboxes. One misconception kept surfacing: that the Invitational identified the “best overall” rod.

That was never the intent.

A rod that excels in one fishing style won’t automatically excel in all of them. No single rod is perfect for every angler, every fishery, and every condition. Even among our three casters, preferences shifted from course to course – yet their scoring still converged on the same performance patterns, proving that the results reflect genuine capability, not personal bias.

Like surfboards, golf clubs, and mountain bikes, fly rods are engineered with specific strengths. Some rods thrive at short-range finesse. Others come alive at distance. A model that shines in a 40-foot dry fly

situation may not be your friend in heavy Patagonian winds or when launching long presentations to cruising trout on stillwaters. The Invitational was created to highlight these differences so anglers can match the rod to the fishing – not the other way around.

For years, we heard from anglers who bought rods simply because they appeared at the top of a narrow “overall” list, only to force those rods into situations they weren’t built for. The Yellow Dog Invitational turns that thinking upside down. Our data helps anglers identify the style of fishing they actually do, so they can then select the rods that perform best in that category.

The 2025 Yellow Dog 5-Weight Fly Rod Invitational sets a new benchmark for real-world, performancedriven testing. More than anything, it provides clarity: • Start with the fishing you do.
