President’s Message

While this is an extremely busy time in schools, I love this time of year.

As we approach the end of Term Four, we get to reflect on the achievements of our students, and are reminded of just how much they have flourished throughout the year.

President’s Message My favourite day at Coomera Anglican College is Valedictory Day, the final day for Year 12. Our Year 12 students arrive early and are fed breakfast by the canteen staff. All teachers who have taught them throughout their 13 years at the College come along and wish them well. After breakfast, all secondary students attend House meetings, where the newly appointed House Leaders take the lead in farewelling their Year 12 House colleagues. This is followed a little later by a Valedictory Assembly where families come and watch the College farewell the cohort.

Given that we are a P-12 College there are always quite a number of students who have completed their entire educational journey with us. We have a tradition where a current Preparatory student presents each P-12 graduate with a flower. Having a Prep and a Year 12 student on stage together is a symbolic representation of how far they have come in 13 years.

After the assembly, all students from Year 11 and right through to the Pre-Prep children in the Early Learning Centre, form a guard of honour.

Each Year 12 student passes though the guard of honour and is hugged, high fived, cheered and applauded by the children as they go. There are plenty of gifts given, tears shed and photos taken. The day ends with a Valedictory Dinner with Year 12 students and their parents in the evening. Speeches are minimal and the mood more light hearted, students are presented with their portfolios and their time as students comes to an end.

Traditions like this are important in relatively young schools and act as rites of passage. We have other rites of passages as students move from Year 6 to Year 7 and also from Pre-Prep in the Early Learning Centre to their Preparatory year in the College.

Traditions that we follow are a strong indicator of the culture of our schools. Anglican schools are renowned for having very strong culture, and many of our traditions revolve around our Christian faith and Anglican practices. While there is an obvious familiarity in much that we do, many traditions can be quite specific and unique to our own communities. It is obvious when you walk into a school with strong traditions and culture. There is a certain feel that is very comforting.

As we near the end of the 2017 school year, I want to take this opportunity to thank all Heads, Chaplains, Chairs of Council and staff for your generous support of your own schools and of ASA. Together we educate about 144,000 students and nurture them in strong faith communities. That is a real blessing.

I wish you a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

In addition we hold eight Celebration Evenings (which many schools call speech nights) to recognise the achievements of our students. We hold separate events for the Early Learning Centre, Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Years 3-4, Years 5-6, Years 7-9 and Years 10-12. It is exhausting by the end of it all, but very worthwhile and having so many events enables us to tailor them quite specifically for the different age groups. I am sure all schools have their own versions of what works for them.

CEO’s Column Every Christian knows the power of ‘story’. Our faith is grounded in the story of Jesus and God’s people of long ago, retold through the centuries and made our story today. Each person’s daily work forms part of this story.

Our schools have an awesome responsibility to keep the Christian myth alive. That’s why in Advent, schools go to great trouble to ensure that the part of the Gospel which tells the Good News of our Saviour’s birth is shared with young and old.

Believe me, it is no mean feat to stage a Nativity Play, an Advent Carols Service or Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, especially when children and possibly animals are involved! Seriously, the retelling of God’s story is more important today than ever, when most students in any school have no meaningful connection with a worshipping community outside the school, and their parents or guardians largely comprise a generation which is ‘unchurched’.

As cute as it is, the school Nativity Play is not simply a re-enactment of the virgin birth, with all the complexities that come with this theology. Surely one would choose an easier concept for children (or adults) to grasp, if we had a choice? If I was designing a school play for the early childhood years, this wouldn’t have been the preferred option for a theme!

In generations past, parents passed ‘down’ to their children the truths and wisdom they had learned from their parents. For many today, these truths as told through story and song come from the lips of children to the ears of their parents passed ‘up’ if you like, retold with a freshness that has the power to be life-giving and life-changing.

That’s why in December each year I never grow tired of attending nativity plays and carols services in our schools. Our story is one that is meant to be retold. Sunday by Sunday, Advent by Advent, Christmas by Christmas. For in telling Jesus’ story, our prayer is that one day it will become part of their story too.

As another school year comes to a close, I take this opportunity to thank all the special people who have dedicated their lives to the care and wellbeing of the young people in Anglican schools.

Teaching is a vocation not a job. Teachers are storytellers, not only through their words but also through their lives, which are scrutinised daily. The Christmas holiday provides a time for refreshment and renewal. For unto us a child is born…

But the birth narratives are our story, an essential and central part of the Gospel story. Without an understanding of Jesus’ early years, we will never understand fully the Jesus who journeyed to and beyond the cross. Because we now have several generations of largely ‘unchurched’ adults, today’s children have not been immersed in the Gospel stories as we were. If we don’t retell the story, they may not hear it from any other source.

Planning for Faith: Three Keys for Mission in Schools Stephen has a passion for exploring mission and ministry. He has worked for the Anglican Church for the last twenty years most in the area of youth and children’s ministry. In this time he has worked for two churches, two Anglican schools, as a university chaplain and for the Brisbane Diocese as the Youth, Children’s and Families Officer. Currently he is the Director Mission for the Anglican Schools Commission in Queensland. He has degrees in Science, Theology, Community Welfare, and Education and is currently working on a Doctorate in Ministry, focused on the church’s mission in Anglican schools.

By Stephen Harrison The task Anglican Schools have of helping young people to hear and respond to the Gospel is harder today than maybe any other time.

The reasons for this are well known. We no longer live in a society that broadly aligns itself with the Christian worldview and most people under forty have little experience of church. Common cultural knowledge about Christianity, such as an awareness of the Bible, no longer exists. The trinity of family, church and school supporting faith has also largely disappeared. Most families in Anglican Schools are not church attenders. The school is their only experience of church and it is likely to be the only place where they hear the Christian message. It is not only that the social structures young people move through don’t encourage a Christian worldview; more so they actively promote an alternative vision of truth and the good life.

Despite all of this, or possibly because of it, Anglican Schools are more strategic and intentional about their Christian mission and ministry than ever before. We live in challenging but exciting times and a school’s approach to mission with young people needs to be carefully thought through. We may have a captive audience but this should not be carelessly exploited. We must be sensitive to how students perceive faith activities and use strategies that are compelling, cut through the noise of a pluralistic society and provide whole-person experiences.

The bread and butter of Anglican School ministry for the past forty years or more has consisted of four strategies or activities. These are chaplain, chapel, religious or Christian education and service.

Of course schools use many other strategies such as voluntary Christian groups, prayer spaces and all kinds of innovative activities to cultivate engagement. Apart from the work done in developing a Christian ethos or culture in the school the core has always been these four basic things.

Today many Anglican Schools put significant effort into thinking strategically about how they might fulfil their Christian mission. They gather key staff together to ask big questions about purpose and

how it might be creatively and effectively fulfilled. In doing this it is essential that all the faith development tools available are considered.

While recognising that faith is a gift from God it is still pertinent to ask how we can fulfil our task of presenting the Gospel as effectively as possible. Even Paul in the much cited example of his discourse in the Areopagus (Acts 17:22-31) sought to communicate clearly and compellingly in culturally relevant ways with those before him.

Not putting chapel, chaplain, religious education and service aside there are three significant tools that Anglican Schools might consider when planning how they do their mission and ministry.

Relationships Relationships are at the heart of chaplaincy. They are also at the heart of faith formation. It is not unusual for Christians to name a key person as important to their coming to faith. This may have been their parents, friends, teachers or chaplains. When faith is witnessed in the character of those we are close to it influences us. It is important for schools to recognise that a single chaplain in a school of hundreds or a thousand or more students can only build significant relationships with so many students.

While some chaplains seek to teach as many students as possible and this is positive in terms of breadth of relationships, it will diminish depth. It may however increase the likelihood that those who want to connect with the chaplain in time of need will. If the chaplain teaches the same students for many years this will increase the depth of relationship. Schools needs to think how they want to shape the chaplain’s relational work and the impact this will have on the breadth and depth of relationships.

While additional chaplains might alleviate relational pressure a more natural solution might be to harness the existing relationships in the school. For many students the teachers who they like and spend a lot of time with are likely to be their most significant and influential relationships in the school. Schools might ask how these powerful relationships might be harnessed as part of the Christian mission of the school. The chaplain may seek to equip teachers and other staff to be nurturers of faith and role models of spiritual exploration. Even non-Christian teachers can play a role in encouraging openness and spiritual exploration. Chaplains have a really important relational role in Anglican Schools and strategically we might ask how more people can become ‘chaplain-like’ in the school.

Time One of the most powerful tools that schools have at their disposal for the positive development of young people is time. While not all students will stay in the one school for thirteen years most will be in the one place for significant periods. That students spend most days of most weeks of these years in the one community means that small things can be very powerful. A prayer said every day for a year can remain with a person for life becoming a resource to draw on in times of need. Stories told and retold across the year or years can become part of the way people think about life. Time and repetition can be powerful influencers particularly if students see value in

Prayers, stillness, reflection on values and other simple small practices that aren’t considered an imposition by the student and are presented as part of the culture of the school can have a considerable cumulative impact. Thinking strategically, schools might ask themselves how time can be used in a daily or regular way to open students to positive faith practices. Questions might also be asked around how time is used in relation to chapel, RE and service to build on the work that is done each year of school. Time should be seen as a significant tool and best utilised by acting strategically in the faith domain over the long period of a student’s life at school.

and freedom to make choices about what they want their life to be.

The prime example of this type of experience is the overseas cultural exchange trip. In terms of tools for faith development these types of experiences are powerful and therefore need to be done carefully and with subsequent ongoing support.

Experiences beyond the pond

While it may be impossible for schools to send every student overseas it is possible to provide them with experiences for reflection that help them to step back from daily life. Short camps or retreats can have such an effect if led well. Experiences of working with communities of difference within Australia can also enable student insight. The key is the change of perspective which is why even going bush or beach for a few days can make a difference.

A story is told of a baby fish that asks: Mother, what is this thing I keep hearing about water? The Mother says: if you want to know what water is, go and stick your head out of the pond. Often our worldview and presuppositions about life are quite invisible to us until we stick our head out of our cultural pond. Experiences that let young people step out of their pond and reflect deeply seem to enable them more clarity

Anglican Schools are in a new time and space for mission and ministry. Increasingly, missional imagination is needed to engage young people with faith on the same level as previous generations.

While innovative strategies are emerging across Australia the elements of relationships, time and experience should be considered, not only for new strategies but for existing ones as well.

Good News for Modern Parents We were made for more than happiness Harriet Connor graduated with a Master of Divinity from Sydney Missionary and Bible College in 2008. Since then, she has served as a lay pastor and teacher in several parishes within the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle. Her husband Daniel is an Anglican priest and they have three sons at Lakes Grammar - An Anglican School.

This year, Harriet published her first book, Big Picture Parents: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Life. The book provides an opportunity for modern parents to step back from all the parenting advice, reflect on the bigger questions and see how the big truths of the Bible can help them to make sense of life and parenthood. Big Picture Parents was shortlisted for the 2017 Australian Christian Book of the Year Award.

By Harriet Connor Modern parents like me live in a swirling sea of advice and information. We are desperately trying to keep up with the Ten Things Every Parent Must Know, the Twelve Mistakes New Parents Make, and the Seventeen Habits of Highly Happy Families. But we just end up feeling confused by conflicting advice, guilty about our imperfections, and afraid of damaging our children.

Modern parents are desperate for good news.

I hit the lowest point of my parenting journey after the birth of our second son. I was struggling to manage a sleepless newborn and an emotional toddler. I felt like I was adrift in a flimsy boat without an anchor, tossed about by the waves of parenting ‘shoulds and shouldn’ts’.

According to Toxic Childhood author Sue Palmer, this is typical: “Most parents are frantically doing their best in a world where the goal posts are not just moving—they’ve actually disappeared . . .

In a world of tumultuous change, confidence is thin on the ground.

The moral and social certainties [of previous generations] have disintegrated, and there seems to be nothing to put in their place.”

When I was desperate for guidance, I reached for the ancient wisdom of my ancestors—the Bible. I was sick of the internet’s fickle fads and craving the kind of unchanging, timeless wisdom that my grandmothers give.

I came to the Bible looking for little pieces of advice, but I found something much better. The Bible showed me a grand vision— a ‘big picture’—that has put life and parenthood into perspective.

The Bible has good news for modern parents!

Our modern world is working hard to convince us that the goal of life is happiness. We are constantly told, “Do whatever makes you happy; follow your heart”. When you ask modern parents what we want for our children, we respond in unison: “We just want them to be happy!” And so we become anxiously dependent on our children’s emotions, doing everything to make sure they feel perpetually happy and successful.

But there is a problem: the more we chase happiness, the less we seem to find it. In the West, rates of depression and mental illness among both adults and children have never been higher. If life is just about feeling happy, then most of us are failing badly.

But the good news of the Bible is that we and our children were created for more than happiness. The Bible’s opening chapters show that humans were made in the image of our Maker for a bigger purpose—to honour God by living well in his creation and doing good to other people.

It follows that parenting is not about making our children feel happy all the time, but about helping them to know and live out their Godgiven purpose.

Interestingly, recent research shows that simply chasing good feelings and running away from bad ones does not bring long-term satisfaction. Rather, the secret to a truly happy life is connection— finding our meaning in relationship to others, and to a bigger purpose in life.

Ironically, if we stop focusing on making our children feel good, and start helping them to do good in line with their purpose, we will actually be giving them the best chance of finding lasting happiness in the long-run.

We don’t have to be perfect If modern pop psychology has taught us anything, it’s that “It’s all your parents’ fault”! Naturally, when we become parents, we start to worry about what our children will be telling their therapist in twenty years’ time. We are afraid that our mistakes and imperfections will ‘scar’ our children for life.

Parents and children were made for the purpose of honouring God, living well in his creation, and doing good to others. But we have a problem: we are human. Genesis 3 describes how our first parents disobeyed God and were sent out of the Garden of Eden, where sin and death work against us living out our purpose.

It was there—outside the Garden—that the first children were born.

In this fallen world, parents can never be perfect—we will have both a positive and negative impact on our children. It follows that human children aren’t perfect either. And here, in this fallen world, we cannot stop bad things from happening to our children. All of this can leave us feeling guilty and afraid.

But the good news of the Bible is that there is one Perfect Parent: God. He invites us to stop being grown-ups, and come to him like little children. If we humbly confess our failings, God adopts us into his spiritual family. He forgives us through the death of his Perfect Child, Jesus, and fills us with his Spirit to try again tomorrow.

We are not in control of our children’s world, but our Father is.

And he is working all things—both good and bad—for the good of his spiritual children.

When we reach the limits of our human capabilities, we can look up towards our Father in heaven and rest in his endless compassion and strength. And strangely, being children of God enables us to become better parents too.

Experts are also urging modern parents to give up the damaging mindset of perfectionism, and aim simply to be “good enough”.

Our imperfections and mistakes can become opportunities to show our children how to navigate life in this imperfect world.

We don’t have to read all those articles In this age of information, it’s tempting to take our parenting dilemmas straight to Dr Google and start clicking on an endless trail of articles. But when we do this, it’s easy to become preoccupied by the tiny details of our children’s lives. We forget to stop and question whether the articles we are reading actually support our family’s values.

But the good news is that in the Bible, God has established a framework of timeless values that can help us to prioritise what truly matters when it comes to raising our children.

God’s values are easy to sum up. Jesus said that all of the laws and commandments in the Bible are expressions of love—love for God, and love for other people (Matthew 22:37-39). Loving God means acknowledging him as our Creator, and worshipping him alone.

Loving other people means committing ourselves to their good, even if they don’t deserve it.

When our minds are spinning with too much parenting information, we can step back and remind ourselves of the kind of people that God wants us and our children to be. Prioritising love for God and love for other people will help us to ground our parenting in the things that really matter.

We don’t have to do this alone One of the major reasons that modern parenthood is so hard is that, for the first time in history, we are trying to do it alone.

Many of us have moved away from our extended families, and now feel isolated. Besides the problem of distance, many of our parents are still working full-time and are not around to help during the week.

Our relationships with our neighbours are also more transient and superficial than in previous generations.

On a day-to-day basis, it can feel like it’s just us—mum, dad and the kids—battling against the world.

But the good news of the Bible is that we weren’t meant to do this alone. God has always called individuals to be part of a bigger community that is bound together by God’s values, and consciously passing them on to the next generation.

Jesus invited all people, whether young or old, married or single, to become children of God by faith. This new family of believers is characterised by love—putting other people’s needs before one’s own.

As parents, we can bring our nuclear family into God’s big family of faith. There we find spiritual brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers, who can encourage and support us in our parenting.

Anglican Schools Have Good News for Parents Anglican schools can play a vital role in sharing the Bible’s good news with modern parents. They can help parents and children to understand that life is about more than simply chasing happiness— we were made for the bigger purpose of connection to God, his creation, and other people.

Schools can reassure parents that they don’t need to be perfect—our imperfections are opportunities to show children how to humbly seek God’s forgiveness and strength.

Schools can help parents and children to prioritise God’s values: loving God and loving others.

Finally, schools can provide a loving community to support parents in their task of bringing up the next generation to know and live out their God-given purpose on earth.

125 years of Empowering Girls As St Michael’s Collegiate School in Hobart celebrates 125 years of remarkable education of girls, Head of Marketing and Communications, Mrs Amanda Mackinnon, shares an insight into the school’s remarkable history and how it has celebrated its success in this significant anniversary year.

In 1892, a small group of Anglican women accompanied by a band of young orphaned girls, left England to sail for the Colonies. These courageous women, members of The Community of the Sisters of the Church, founded schools across Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

The first of these was St Michael’s Collegiate in Hobart.

At the time, Hobart’s population was approximately 25000 and growing rapidly both by birth and immigration. The Dean of Hobart controversially proposed that a Sisterhood should undertake women’s work in the Diocese to cope with the growing demand for social services. However, the Sisters had strong ideas of their own and were determined that their role would be firmly in the creation of a School.

Sister Phyllis took the reins of the School in 1895 and quickly established Collegiate as a distinguished school delivering high academic attainment. Standards, tone and success were hugely important in the years ahead and families sent children to board from right across Tasmania.

Although commencing as a coeducational school, Collegiate phased out the ‘boys department’ at the end of 1898. The boys were not forgotten however, and the careers of those who fought in World War I can be traced throughout early school magazines. Collegiate went on to forge a strong brother-sister school relationship with The Hutchins School, and for over a century the two Anglican schools have continued to serve the Greater Hobart municipality and worked closely together.

The Sisters formally passed the School to a Board of Management in 1972. It is reassuring to know that the traditions and values of the Sisters continue to inspire and guide the workings of the School today. Collegiate is proud of its heritage and has been celebrating 125 years of remarkable education for girls throughout 2017.

The School has marked this significant milestone in a number of different ways. Accessible to all online, an interactive timeline was established on the School’s

website detailing important events in the School’s history. From the purchase of property and the development of outstanding facilities, through to changes in the curriculum and the contributions made by key community members, the timeline has already been utilised by current students researching the School’s past, and Old Girls who have enjoyed wandering back through time. Highlights from the timeline have been shared across social media in a weekly ‘Tuesday Treasures from the archives’ post and resulted in engagement from alumni across the globe.

Many of Collegiate’s Old Girls have also been celebrated in an ‘Inspiring Old Girls Gallery’. With an impressive list of alumni headed by Her Excellency, Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, AC, Governor of Tasmania, the gallery reads as a who’s who of business, law, science, academia, community service, education, the performing arts and literature. Each woman on the gallery has her own unique story born from the strong educational foundations provided at Collegiate.

Early in 2017, the School commissioned renowned Australian choral composer, Mr Paul Jarman, to compose a special piece to mark the 125th anniversary. Paul is well known as a lyricist and composer of choral music, a world music multiinstrumentalist, and a facilitator of many community inspired collaborations. He has written over 100 commissioned works for ensembles, festivals and special events. Immersing himself in the School’s culture and community, Paul and wife Bonnie Neilson spent months composing and refining a piece that reflected the true essence of the School. References to Collegiate’s passion for lifelong learning and vision to empower girls for their future featured strongly in the lyrics.

Collegiate was particularly thrilled to have Sister Linda Mary, Mother Superior of The Community of The Sisters of The Church, join the School community for the official week of celebrations. Summing up her visit, Sister Linda Mary said: “I have really enjoyed relearning and the vast sense of creativity that exists here.

Since my last visit there is also a sense of expansion. It has also struck me that the Collegiate community is very connected – something you don’t see in many schools. I have met Collegiate families of four or five generations, that is very special. What delights me is focus on Mother Emily’s vision. It is still evident and experienced in different ways. I have also been heartened to note that Collegiate has a Spirituality and Social Awareness Prefect. Mother Emily was very socially aware and I am sure she would delight in this role.”

Speaking of the School in its 125th year, Principal Mrs Judith Tudball explained: “It has been a delight to celebrate 125 years of success of this extraordinary school. The Collegiate community is truly a remarkable one and I am continually touched by their ongoing support and commitment of the School.” Fittingly, as Collegiate now looks to the future, it has just released the Strategic Intent for 2017 – 2020. St Hilda’s joins Operation Wallacea St Hilda’s School, Gold Coast Earlier this year, a team of 13 students and three teachers from St Hilda’s School embarked on an adventure to Indonesia which reads closer to an Indiana Jones plot than your average school excursion.

This time though, the quest was not for hidden treasure, but to take part in Operation Wallacea, a mission that relies on teams of student volunteers from around the world to work on real-world research and conservation management programs alongside ecologists, scientists and academics.

St Hilda’s Science Teacher Sara Bentley was instrumental in organising the two-week expedition and despite the many challenges (including terrain so muddy that the soles of hiking boots were lost) reflected on the experience as rewarding and invaluable for the girls.

“The best thing the girls took away from the trip was the opportunity to take part in real conservation science and collecting data that has significant importance to that region of Indonesia,” Mrs Bentley said.

“They also got to see first-hand real passion for the environment and were mesmerised at how dedicated and knowledgeable the academics and scientists were and how willing they were to share their knowledge and passion with them.”

Since beginning work with Operation Wallacea in Indonesia in 2007, student volunteer contributions have crucially contributed to the gathering of data which forms foundations for ongoing REDD+ funding applications. A climate change initiative, REDD+ stands for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

The St Hilda’s team spent time in both jungle and marine areas of Indonesia, attending lectures and collecting precious data which will assist in gaining funding needed to preserve the diverse flora and fauna in Indonesia. The team walked up to 10km a day and learned to live off the bare essentials.

Year 12 Student, Zoe Dart, called the trip a once-in-a-lifetime experience and relished the chance to challenge herself and experience a whole other world away from School life.

“We were slightly apprehensive of the weeks that lay ahead, but the trip ended up being the most worthwhile and exciting trip and one that I hope will be offered to students again in future,” Zoe said.

“It has given me a greater understanding and appreciation for the earth’s precious resources and has made me think more about how I can change my own lifestyle to positively impact our environment.

“And in addition, I met so many inspiring and interesting scientists who love and are passionate about the work they are doing.”

The girls and their teachers were also privileged to spend time with Indonesian locals who lived in nearby villages.

“We were invited into various homes for food and drinks, to celebrate and to converse. Despite not having much, the locals were so generous,” Zoe said.

Year 11 Student, Hanna Shrubshall, found her experience with the locals humbling and inspiring.

“What surprised me most were the people and their culture. It was the most amazing thing to experience a family who would generously welcome you into their home and offer you so much from what little they owned,” she said.

Cadets Fuel the Flame for Volunteering Trinity Anglican College

Nine Trinity Anglican College students from Year 9-11 graduated from the Rural Fire Service cadets program recently, just in time for the warmer weather when fire is top of mind for many people.

Jessica Arkless, Ellie Avage, Faye Cameron, Josh Corbett, Daniel Forrest, Stephanie Hutchinson, Jacqui McMahon, Jake Salan and Mitchell Scott completed the 11-week course, which introduced them to fire safety, casualty assistance, equipment and radio use, as well as an understanding of the role of the Rural Fire Service (RFS).

The students received their certificates at a special presentation at the College attended by Albury MP Mr Greg Aplin, RFS Superintendent Pat Westwood and Cadet Coordinator David Turner.

Some of the students have already joined local brigades as junior members and will have only a minimal amount of additional training ahead of them to join the brigades as adult members.

The program is designed to make young people aware of the RFS and emergency services and to expose them to the concept of volunteering. The college is the only school in the Albury area to take up the opportunity as part of its co-curricular activities, but the program’s success has ensured it will be offered next year as well.

Five students represented Trinity and they were outright winners in two of the 10 events - hose and knapsack relay along with the communications and navigation exercise. Despite competing in some categories which tested skills they hadn’t yet covered in their cadet course, the students finished second overall.

In the first week, students learned about the RFS and fire behaviour.

By week two they were learning the terminology and how to correctly use the radio as well as where everything was on the truck.

Week three introduced them to the use of the hoses, pumps, hand signals and the knapsack. Their knowledge grew and so by week eight, when the inaugural NSWRFSA Division 13 Cadet Field Days came around, co-ordinator David Turner believed they were ready to have a go.

Several students admitted to joining the cadet program on a whim, but had enjoyed it so much they would continue as junior brigade members until they were eligible to become full members. Others were already aware of the RFS because one of their parents was a member. One student decided to join because he was impressed with the brigade that came to help when fire threatened their family farm.

Arden students bring the joy of Christmas Arden Anglican School Continuing Arden Anglican School’s tradition over recent years, the whole school community contributed items for the Operation Christmas Child’s (OCC) Christmas box appeal.

The aim of this appeal, organised by Samaritan’s Purse, is to bring the joy of Christmas to children in developing countries, many of whom will receive a Christmas gift for the first time.

Arden’s Junior School OCC Co-ordinator, Mrs Karen Hopkins said the Junior School children were excited to be involved in this year’s appeal.

“The Student Representative Council (SRC) were thrilled that the Junior School was able to donate 51 boxes full to the brim of items donated by Arden families from each year group,” she said.

“Packing the boxes is a hands-on and practical way the students can support children that are the same age as them living in poverty in countries overseas.

“The students enjoyed the process and felt it was a lot of fun arranging the boxes knowing that they were helping children who are less fortunate than themselves.”

Mrs Hopkins said each year group was allocated specific gifts to purchase for the box. These included toiletries such as soap, a comb or a children’s toothbrush and something special such as a small soft toy, tennis balls or notebooks and pencils. Students also gave a gold coin donation for postage costs.

“Each box contains something to wear, something to play with, something for school, something to love, something special and something to help children wash,” she said.

Members of the SRC led the packing in the library and reported that the children had great fun filling the boxes and imagining the delight of the children who will open the boxes at Christmas time.

Secondary School families also dug deep with donations and 24 enthusiastic Year 9, 10 and 11 students helped at the Samaritan’s Purse Sydney warehouse for a day.

Secondary School OCC Co-ordinator Karen Moss said that Arden’s Social Justice Group had been committed to the Operation Christmas Child initiative for many years now.

“Our visit to help the organisation process the thousands of boxes that arrive at the centre from around Sydney, is a natural extension of the commitment we have as a school to creating beautiful Christmas boxes for children in the Developing World,” Mrs Moss said.

“At the packing centre, we were reminded of the love and respect that must be extended to all the boxes that Samaritan’s Purse receives, and the students worked carefully and lovingly to ensure that the boxes they processed bring joy to the children receiving them in Madagascar and Cambodia. Watching them serve with such joy and commitment was a privilege to witness.”

Follow your dreams Dr Rob McEwan, Headmaster of The Hutchins School writes about the School’s Follow Your Dream Awards.

The annual awards gives support to boys in Year 11 and 12 to pursue their goals.

Every boy in every class has distinctive talents and passions that when discovered can inspire him to achieve far more than he thought possible. For many boys their talent or passion will not be found in the classroom, it may not even be found in the traditional co-curricular offering of sport or music. Finding each boy’s passion is about creating a life for each boy that is filled with purpose and meaning in and beyond what occupation he may choose in the future.

Without opportunities, how will each boy discover his aptitudes and interests? A lot depends on the experiences made available for boys and their willingness to embrace them. Of the Hutchins Old Boys who finished school before 2005, how many may have been talented dancers, fencers, mountain bikers, sports shooters or karate black belts but were never given the opportunity to try? Few, if any, of this same group of Old Boys would have predicted back when they were at school that 80 Hutchins boys would have performed in this year’s annual Dance Showcase and cite ‘fun’ as the overwhelming reason for participating.

In recognising that no two boys are the same and that each boy has unique interests and talents, the breadth of opportunity available to boys remains an important feature of the Hutchins experience.

As the only school in Australia to be an accredited Discover Sailing Centre together with a Marine School delivering unparalleled marine experiences in a school setting, combined with a diverse sporting program that offers 31 different sports in the Senior School alone, a dance program from Kindergarten to Year 12 and a comprehensive Music and Outdoor Education program, a Hutchins education is filled with possibility. As an extension to the School’s personalised approach, The Hutchins Foundation offers financial support to boys in Years 11 and 12 to pursue their dreams and goals through the annual Follow Your Dreams Awards. Harvey Chilcott (Year 11) – Awarded the Tasmanian Athletics Under 18 male athlete of the year, Harvey will compete at the All Australian Schools Championship in Adelaide in December with the aim of being ranked in the top two in Australia.

Lachlan Chambers (Year 11) – A passionate music student whose dream is to become a composer. Lachlan’s contribution to the Hutchins Music program has been extensive throughout his time at Hutchins.

Thomas Young (Year 12) – A talented musician who is currently studying a performance based course at the University of Tasmania.

Isaac Sargent (Year 12) – A filmmaker who has already won the Australian Childhood Foundation Short Film competition and this year created a public awareness advertisement for Road Safety Week and a short film for the Tasploitation Film Festival.

Adam Nyhuis (Year 12) – A Computer Graphics and Design student who is in the process of starting his own clothing and design business. Adam has already designed and produced t-shirts, stickers and logos.

Boys who discover their passion often go on to achieve at levels many would only dream of. What seems like hard work for others is pleasure for those who love what they do. Musicians love the sound they make, mathematicians love numbers and great teachers love teaching. As the 1970 Nobel Laureate Dr Paul Samuelson said,

“Never underestimate the vital importance of finding early in life the work that for you is play. This turns possible underachievers into happy warriors.”

By providing a diverse and multifaceted educational experience, together with a culture of support and encouragement, Hutchins boys are given the best possible chance of finding the person they are meant to be.

Congratulations to the following boys who received a Follow Your Dreams Award: Samuel King (Year 11) – A highly successful sailor who competed in the 2017 Laser Radial World Sailing Championship in the Netherlands and the SB20 World Championships this year.

Coomera Lends a Helping Hand Emma Lasker, Coomera Anglican College

Students at Coomera Anglican College recently completed Service Week, a CAConnect Project initiative that gives students the opportunity to give back to the community through a range of community service projects.

Despite being a part of Coomera Anglican College’s culture for many years, this year Service Week implemented a new way of approaching community service, with three groups of students travelling to various regions to assist, connect and engage with communities.

The trips provided students with the opportunity to engage with people in local and rural communities and in the process, undergo transformation of their world view so that they may develop a willingness to be agents of change within our world.

The Gold Coast group remained in the local area to immerse themselves in the community by helping students at the local Mudgeeraba Special School, visiting the elderly at an aged care facility, preparing meals for the homeless at the Surfers Paradise Anglican Crisis Care, working alongside victims of abuse and disadvantage, and brightening up the homeless centre with donated artworks created by Year 9 students.

Service Week Coordinator Sasha Ristic said the week aimed to encourage self-awareness, deeper learning and reflection by assisting those through a service learning experience that reflects the College’s core values of ‘Imagination, Listen and Respect’.

“At Coomera Anglican College, we pride ourselves on being a school that gives back to the wider community while educating our students about empathy, leadership, service and the essence of community, while promoting the dimensions of Service and Faith according to our Strategic Agenda,” Mr Ristic said.

“Our students were very excited for Service Week and the CAConnect Project and especially loved the idea of giving back to the community, helping those that don’t have much and simply immersing themselves as guests into different communities and working with the people rather than for the people.”

Two groups of 26 Year 9 students and four staff members travelled more than 800km west to Queensland’s remote towns of Charleville and Mitchell to participate in local activities as part of the CAConnect program, an initiative which Mr Ristic said was about assisting and making a difference in communities beyond the College.

“Over five days, these two groups engaged, connected and became part of these remote communities by working alongside the locals and sharing music through various projects at the local Primary and High schools,” he said.

Cambodia: A real-life lesson on compassion

What is compassion? Is it sympathising with an article on the refugee crisis? Is it being knowledgeable on the implications of the Houston floods? What differentiates compassion in our approach to adversity?

Compassion is about action, not words.

In the recent July holidays, a group of 20 Year 10 St Luke’s students travelled to rural Cambodia. The service trip aimed to allow students to learn from and work with some incredible Cambodians currently living under the poverty line.

One of the projects undertaken was the construction of a house for a man who had tragically lost his leg in a landmine accident.

The family consisted of the man and his wife, six children and three grandchildren. Their house consisted of a single room which had been rendered harsh to live in by decay.

Finding work was a rare occurrence for this man, and even if he could, the nearest city was 75km away. If he did work, he would only bring home five dollars in one day. Five dollars between eleven hungry mouths!

And yet what struck us was their attitude. You would think this family would be stricken with despair, but their smiles and enthusiasm for life left us inspired. The young grandchildren, and even older grandparents, insisted on helping us in whatever way they could.

As Year 10 student Finn Wilson said: “This trip has completely changed my perception of the world, and has made me want to help those in poverty so much more. The people we met were always so happy, even though they have so little. I have realised how thankful I should be for everything that we have. I think that everybody should go on a trip like this at least once in their lives.”

It was a challenging week for the students. But for the people of Cambodia, this is their ‘day-to-day’ for their entire lives. It was at this house that compassion for those living in poverty was truly learnt.

Tintern Grammar celebrates 140 years Reverend Alison Andrews, Tintern Grammar

140 years, celebration and appreciation, that what 2017 has been for Tintern Grammar.

Celebrations you would expect when achieving such a milestone as 140 years!

As such, celebrations this year have come in many shapes and sizes.

The first for the year being our Tintern Grammar Foundation Service, where the whole school came together in the CMWood, with parents and specials guests to look back and remember and to celebrate our school. We looked back on photos of the past, from the many years at Hawthorn, to the move to Ringwood East, through all the different years of growth, which all began back in 1877, with Mrs Emma B Cook and her vision for education.

This year also saw the launch of our Avenue of Excellence, established to honour Tintern Alumni for their achievements on a world stage. The Tintern Grammar Avenue of Excellence formally celebrates and honours the outstanding achievements and contribution of extraordinary Alumni in their field of endeavour.

Dedicated pillars detailing the achievements of our Alumni grace our beautiful treed paths and additional alumni will be added to this historical living legacy every year.

It is the School’s vision to inspire current and future students to pursue excellence in a wide range of areas. The School community came together for a Celebration in September to formally acknowledge these impressive Tintern Grammar Alumni.

Going into 2018 once again we ‘look toward the hills’. To the future, to the possibilities, and just as the Psalmist writes, ‘our help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.’ (Psalm 121:2) Grace and Peace.

It was an honour to have in attendance Alumni, Life Governors and members of the Board, as well as parents, staff and most importantly students. Life Governor Deidre Johnson (class of 1955) was able to tell the school about the Hawthorn years and Southwood old boy Dean Vescio (class of 2012) led us through a prayer of thanksgiving for the past. Our principal then reminded each of us of the importance of this day and that it is the journey that we travel which is important. It truly was a service of celebration, with beautiful music from the Concert choir and the cutting of a birthday cake. Followed by birthday cake for all students throughout the school at recess.

Another such celebration was our Cathedral Service held in May at St Paul’s Cathedral. This service had the theme, ‘Towards the hills’.

A phrase from our School Psalm, Psalm 121. It was chosen as a way of recognising not only the physical move to the Ringwood site from Hawthorn but also to reflect the potential and growth of our school community over the years. Our preacher for the service was the Bishop of Ballarat, The Right Reverend Garry Weatherill who spoke to our community about the foundations we build our lives on, and asked the question, ‘What will you do with your one wild and precious life?’, from a poem by Mary Oliver.

A magnificent highlight of the service was our community item, the singing of the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, bringing together students, alumni, teachers, past and present as well as other members from our Tintern Grammar Community. For me this embodied our culture at Tintern and was symbolic of what we can achieve when we work together.

University beckons early for Ivanhoe Grammar Ivanhoe Grammar School

Year 9 students at Ivanhoe Grammar School will soon get an early taste of university, with a new dedicated campus for Year 9 students to be set up on the outskirts of La Trobe University.

The School and La Trobe University this year entered into an Australia-first partnership to establish the campus and provide students with a unique educational initiative to challenge and inspire them and prepare them for the next stage of their life.

Ivanhoe Grammar School Principal Gerard Foley said his school was leading the way in creating Australia’s first Year 9 campus providing students with a year-long university-based learning experience.

“Our collaboration with La Trobe is a win-win – a chance for academics to influence the younger generation and for our students to see what learning is like beyond the classroom and how it translates to the real world.”

“Spending a year at our new University Campus will provide our Year 9s with new and exciting learning opportunities,” he said.

“Over the course of the year, they will be exposed to big ideas in a university environment. They will interact with researchers and academics, attend lecture presentations and develop skills that they will be able to apply to real life situations.”

Mr Foley said providing students with a hybrid university-secondary school experience at such a significant time in their schooling had enormous benefits.

“It adds to their existing learning, increases their cultural understanding, helps them to become global citizens and prepares them for their senior school years and adult life,” he said.

“The experience will enhance and enrich our students’ academic and personal lives.”

Mr Foley said careful planning had gone into all aspects of the initiative, with parents, students and the local community all consulted. The new campus also had the backing of Darebin City Council.

The program will begin in 2019 with students from the Ivanhoe and Plenty campuses relocating to the new Ivanhoe Grammar School University Campus in Macleod.

Year 9 Learning Facilitator Helen Marotta said the partnership between Ivanhoe Grammar and La Trobe University builds on a successful education program that has run for the past 10 years.

“It has been delightful to see the growth in our program over the years to a point where it has a waiting list of academics who want to take part; and has extended from once a year, to three times a year and now is becoming a dedicated campus in its own right,” Ms Marotta said.

Ms Marotta said the feedback from students who completed the current program was positive, and she expected future students attending the dedicated campus would gain so much more with the program being extended to a full year.

Year 9 students Isabella and Tara both attended La Trobe in June.

“I relished the opportunity to contact various academics regarding their research on our topic and it was great to experience the university-like nature of the program. It made me feel very grown up,” Isabella said.

“I enjoyed attending lectures as we were able to hear the views of current academics on our areas of study. We were also taught how to synthesise research and correctly acknowledge sources,” Tara said.

The School has appointed experienced educational leader Stella Batsanis to head the campus, leading a team of 20 school staff.

Formerly the Head of Middle Years and currently the School’s Wellbeing Director, Mrs Batsanis brings a breadth of knowledge to the role and is excited about leading this unique campus.

“At our University Campus, students will have the opportunity to learn through authentic experiential learning, a rich, varied and rigorous curriculum, university programs and community and international service activities all of which give wonderful richness to the Year 9 experience,” Mrs Batsanis said.

La Trobe Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Tony McGrew said La Trobe was thrilled to be welcoming Ivanhoe Grammar School to the University.

“The new Ivanhoe Grammar School University Campus will be established in two terraces owned by the University in Macleod,” Professor McGrew said.

“The terraces will be completely renovated into modern open learning spaces, compliant with Heritage Victoria guidelines.

“Students will be based at the terraces, but will also have access to other facilities at La Trobe University - including our scientific laboratories, a mock boardroom, a moot court and our Wildlife Sanctuary. Furthermore, La Trobe academics will contribute to students’ studies through our very successful joint educational program.”

A Helping Hand for young refugees Perth College

A local not-for-profit group will expand its services for young female refugees thanks to the generosity of Perth College students.

Members of the School’s Amnesty Club have donated $6,000 to the Association for Services to Torture and Trauma Survivors (ASeTTS).

The girls raised the funds over four years by selling cupcakes and running annual activities such as a talent quest as well as a Silence-athon, in which 37 nominated students and five staff were not allowed to speak for a day.

ASeTTS, which is based on Beaufort Street, close to Perth College, provides a range of services for refugee survivors of torture and trauma to rebuild their lives in Australia. Its Youth Counsellor, Lucy McEvoy, said the organisation was humbled by the students’ generosity and compassionate leadership.

“This donation will help us to launch our first young women’s multicultural forum and fund a five-day camp for adolescent girls who have been victims of torture and trauma,” she said.

Perth College Learning Enrichment Co-ordinator Pippa Depiazzi said students wanted to donate the money to a local organisation with a clear link to the community.

“Having learned about the work of ASeTTS, our Amnesty Club members were eager to make a difference in the lives of those who are facing personal hurdles relating to their experiences as a refugee.

“ASeTTS receives limited government funding and our students are pleased they have been able to help.”

Commemorating a Unique Partnership Christ Church Grammar School, South Yarra

A ten-year partnership with the Friends of the 2/14th Australian Field Regiment has been celebrated as a valued component of Christ Church Grammar School’s Year 6 program, enhancing the School’s history curriculum and commemorations of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. In 2007 the Friends group formalised a partnership with Christ Church Grammar School, South Yarra through the Adopt an Ex-Service Organisation Program, administered by the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Veterans and their families welcomed the involvement of Christ Church Grammar School and the respectful commitment shown for the 2/14th contributions.

Following the closure of the 2/14th Australian Field Regiment Association in June 2007, the Friends of the 2/14th Australian Field Regiment was formed by Jim and Pat Connor, whose late father was a member. This enabled veterans and their families to maintain links and feel confident the history and unit experiences would be appropriately honoured and remembered.

The link between the 2/14th Australian Field Regiment and Christ Church Grammar School has been a wonderful opportunity to bring history alive for students and to support the veterans and their families in a meaningful way, by maintaining memories and the heritage of the regiment.

Over the past ten years, students have been involved on Anzac Day and the 2/14th Commemorative Service in October and the school has been represented at several Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin commemorations.

The School also hosts the Regiment’s website and veterans have been involved in school visits, donated memorabilia and been involved in interviews and other records to share the Regiment’s history. The partnership has been nominated for the Shrine Medal in 2013 and was a finalist in 2014.

Veteran Ron Jackson, wrote The Broken Eighth, a book documenting the history of the 2/14th Australian Field Regiment. He and his wife Mavis donated the profits, as The Jackson Gift, to Christ Church Grammar School as a continuing fund to provide resources to perpetuate the memory of the regiment and support the school’s history curriculum.

Kindy Kids Promote Kindness in Kings Park Perth College

Perth College’s youngest students surprised families at Kings Park last month with a flash mob dance to launch World Kindness Week.

Fifteen Kindergarteners, together with 18 Year 11 Dance Students, had practiced together for two weeks to learn the routine; they were among thousands of people around the globe – 100 cities in 50 countries – to perform a flash mob to the same song and dance on the same day.

The event, organised by non-profit organisation, Life Vest Inside, involved participants posing in positions that demonstrate acts of kindness, to show that kindness is a common thread uniting people around the world.

“Research argues that two mental practices – mindfulness and compassion – are key to wellbeing and the girls have been doing a number of activities to learn more through our InsideOut selfleadership programme.

“It was a delight to be joined on the day by some of the girls’ siblings, who took part in the Dance for Kindness in 2015.”

The Perth College team was the only group in Western Australia registered for the sixth annual Worldwide Dance for Kindness, and one of two in the entire country; this was the third time the School had participated in the event.

“The Kindergarten girls formed very strong bonds with the older students who were collaborating with them, and they looked forward to their rehearsals very much.”

A first in Victoria for St Paul’s St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School

St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School has been recognised by the Victorian Government to be the first secondary school in the state to complete the Achievement Program.

The program supports schools and kindergartens to create healthy environments for learning, working and living and encourages a holistic view of health for children, families, staff and the entire school community. St Paul’s completed all of the eight health priority areas within the program.

Marnie Wilson from the Achievement Program team commended St Paul’s for its great collaborative work, particularly around partnerships and taking a ‘whole schools’ approach.

St Paul’s Business Manager Leah Young said the school began the program with a review of the canteen menu across campuses at Warragul and Traralgon and had progressively worked through the eight key areas with staff, students, and parents and developing community partnerships.

“Students were involved in all key areas of the program including the canteen menu review where they were able to sample and provide feedback on new healthy recipes,” she said.

“Sports Captains were engaged to assist the drafting of new policies relating to health and physical activities, health promotion activities were conducted, and a Health and Wellbeing Team established to drive a whole of school approach.”

Mrs Young said a partnership with West Gippsland Healthcare Group’s Health Promotion team had provided valuable guidance in the projects implementation and development.

WGHG’s Health Promotion Officer Angela Greenall said St Paul’s had taken many proactive steps to achieve best practice in terms of health and wellbeing and made significant changes which have been embraced by the whole school community.

170 Years for St Peter’s College Throughout 2017 St Peter’s College has celebrated its 170th anniversary and acknowledged its rich history with activities culminating on Founders’ Day. Held at the beginning of Term 3, the service brought together the Junior and Senior Schools in a collective celebration.

With 300 staff and almost 1500 students in attendance, everyone gathered in the Burchnall Sports Centre to recognise this special occasion. As is tradition, boys learnt about key figures in the School’s history, honoured and remembered in the names of the Houses. This included benefactor and philanthropist Benjamin da Costa and Albert Brooks, a former master-in-charge of the Prep School.

To mark the occasion all students and staff received the booklet ‘A Celebration of Saints’ which rejoices in the surprising stories, tall tales and remarkable truths about the Adelaide School’s history.

Newcastle Celebrates The Reverend Matt Shorten

Lakes Grammar – An Anglican School

Each year the four schools of the Diocese of Newcastle gather for a Celebration Day at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle.

The Diocese has four schools that belong to their corporation best known as Newcastle Anglican Schools Corporation (NASC). These schools are Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College (BTAC) located in Fletcher, a western suburb of Newcastle; Lakes Grammar – An Anglican School located on the Central Coast of NSW at Warnervale; Manning Valley Anglican College (MVAC) situated at Taree on the Mid North Coast of NSW; and Scone Grammar School (SGS) in the Upper Hunter region in Scone.

Reverend Matt Shorten from Lakes Grammar then jumbled everyone into different groups in a chaotic ice-breaker that would surreptitiously have the students from different schools mingling.

Once settled again students from MVAC read from the book of Nehemiah a tongue twisting reading that revealed the theme for the day, “The joy of the Lord is our strength.” Dean Katherine graciously unpacked the reading for the students, cleverly likening herself to the next Dr Who which came as no surprise to those of us who know her.

She then organised the students into tour groups and they wandered around the well-marked out points of interest.

The Dean and NASC Board member, Father Scott Dulley, Mr Michael Hannah (Principal of Lakes Grammar) and Mr Greg Anderson (Chaplain at MVAC) were all at key locations with much knowledge to impart. After 30 minutes of organised chaos and timed movements to the sanctuary bell we all gathered again for some final prayers lead by student representatives and coordinated by Reverend Melinda McMahon from BTAC. Our day concluded with a feast provided by the amazing Wallsend Parish and organised by Lorin Livingstone. The students ate, drank and said hello to each other. A few phone numbers may well have been exchanged and another Celebration Day had come to an end.

All the students boarded buses which, for some, would be a long trek home. And all the chaplains and staff from the schools breathed a sigh of relief…all had gone well and we believed that “The joy of the Lord is our strength!”

In November this year, more than 200 students from the four NASC schools converged on the Cathedral with a buzz of excitement.

Some of the students had been on a bus for almost three hours in order to spend three hours engaging with each other and the Cathedral. Most had never been to the Cathedral before and were quickly in awe of its remarkable architecture. The Scone Grammar Chapel Band kicked off the event with some rousing worship music before Bishop Peter, our Bishop Administrator, officially welcomed everyone to the 7th annual gathering. Reverend Richard Loh from BTAC then introduced Dean Katherine who explained her role and the role of the cathedral in the life of the Diocese. Dean Katherine is the first female Dean of Newcastle Cathedral and has been in her role for only a few weeks.

Whitsunday Anglican School Continues Christmas Donation Tradition Whitsunday Anglican School (WAS) has continued its Christmas tradition of donating to Anglicare with this year’s presentations taking the tradition to 18 years of giving.

This year’s donation, presented during the sub-schools’ Christmas Services, was made up of more than 50 hampers of perishable goods, a donation of $640 and $300 worth of vouchers which were kindly donated by a WAS family.

The Junior School was the first to present their perishable goods donation to Anglicare Mackay Director John Langford AM on Monday, as part of their Annual Christmas Giving Tree Appeal.

“Christmas is a time of joy, thankfulness and faith and if we can give even just a little joy, thankfulness and faith to children in need then we have done something to help our community this Christmas,” she said.

Mr Langford said he was grateful for Whitsunday Anglican School’s support for Anglicare and the community over the years.

Donkey’s First Christmas

The children in the St Mark’s Early Learning Centre were very excited to perform their musical Nativity play based on a story called ‘The Donkey’s First Christmas’.

The original story was written by an 11 year old girl, Susanne Schroder, and it tells the Christmas story through the eyes of the donkey and the other animals in the stable on the first Christmas night.

The cows and donkey are not happy that the stable is being overcrowded with unexpected visitors! First Mary and Joseph, then a baby, closely followed by the shepherds, angels and kings!

During CAVE (Christian and Values Education) and Music lessons throughout Term 4, the children worked hard to learn all the songs and the Year 1 students took on the lead roles with confidence and enthusiasm!

The grumpy cows are about to storm out of the stable when Mary invites them to meet baby Jesus and in meeting the special baby, the cows blush and admit that the stable is rather big after all and that the special baby is very welcome!

The final production came together in the last couple of weeks and the end result was simply delightful!

Arden students share the dignity Arden Anglican School

Arden Anglican School’s Social Justice Group (SJG) aims to “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.

The group has been exploring the issue of gender inequality, not only in the developing world but also closer to home.

“The group has become an important part of Arden’s mission, vision, and values,” said SJG Prefect Tessa Marsden, who reported that the group has grown from 14 members in 2014 to more than 50 members today.

At a global level the SJG has continued to financially support The Good Return organisation which facilitates micro-financing to women in the developing world, helping women to ultimately raise their families out of poverty.

The SJG’s bake sale proceeds enabled Arden to micro-finance Cambodian woman, Sim Onn. Sim plans to use the money to improve the yield on her small farm through purchasing farm inputs.

Once Sim has repaid the money to Good Return, it can then be reinvested into another woman’s business venture.

More locally, the group encouraged the School’s Secondary School community to embrace the challenge to ‘Share the Dignity’, an Australian organisation formed in 2015.

Tessa reported that the initiative was also embraced by the male students, with many Arden boys bringing in items in support of this cause. Over 200 individual sanitary kits were donated in total.

Tessa concluded: “It has been fun to get involved and make a really practical and lasting difference to an issue close to our hearts.”

She added “I never thought we could do this in a co-educational school and was very encouraged by the whole school’s support.”

Arden’s SJG Coordinator Karen Moss said: “This shows the School’s commitment to justice and compassion for all and to see justice as gender non-specific. It was great to see a local initiative having an immediate impact on our wider community.”

Other gender inequality issues discussed during in the SJG this year have included third world issues; such as child marriages, the lack of education regarding maternal health and the unemployment rate of women; as well as first-world issues, like the dominance in American business of male company CEOs.

Tessa explained: “Their founder, Rochelle Courtenay, was shocked to realise that there were thousands of women in Australia who were homeless, often due to fleeing domestic violence situations.

They were forced to make difficult choices, such as whether to spend their money on essentials like shelter, food and clothing, or equally as essential, sanitary items. Share The Dignity’s work centres around the belief that sanitary items should be a right, not a privilege.”

To create awareness, Tessa Marsden spoke about ‘Share the Dignity’ not only in the SJG, but also in school assemblies. She initially found it challenging to talk about.

“I realised the greater cause was more important than my reservations around talking about a taboo subject,” Tessa said.

Arden collected sanitary items via a ‘Share The Digni-tree’ at the School’s annual Girls’ Night In. “The beautiful acts of giving were matched by an equally beautiful place to collect them. Donating physical products had a different impact than financial donations; donating something real and tangible made the girls feel like they were making an instant impact on other women’s lives,” she said.

Pay-Per-Use Lounges There are 4 paid lounges located in Singapore’s Changi Airport. 1 in the public area, known as The Haven by JetQuay equipped with 18 nap rooms and 13 shower rooms. The other 3 are located in the transit area for passengers to use before their flights. These include the Plaza Premium Lounge in terminal 1, and the Ambassador Transit Lounge located in terminals 2 and 3.

Transit Hotels If you have ample time between flights and want your own space to refresh, relax and rest, you can stay at one of the transit hotels without having to leave the Departure Lounge. The Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel, located in terminal 1 operates 24 hours/7 days a week and has small, medium and large rooms equipped with a shower. The Ambassador Transit Hotel, located in both terminal 2 and 3 also operates 24 hours/7 days a week.

Changi Transit Programme Until 31 March 2018 receive a SGD$20 Changi Dollar Voucher (CDV) that is valid for use at a range of retail, food and service outlets in Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Free Singapore Tour If your transit is longer than 5.5 hours then you can be enthralled by the sights, sounds and colours of Singapore by choosing between one of two tours during the transit. The Heritage Tour, takes you on a journey through places such as The Colonial District , Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam. The City Sights Tour takes you sightseeing through Singapore’s famous icons.

SIA Hop-on Bus The SIA-Hop-on One-Day Pass allows you to board any of the SIA Hop-on Bus services that stops at more than 20 places around the city, gaining you walking access to major attractions, cultural centres and shopping malls. SIA Hop-on Buses operate from 8:30am to 6pm every day, and offer convenient wheelchair access as well as audio commentaries in 12 languages.
