Partnership As we think back over our lives, there have been startling improvements in health management. We know better now what we should consume or not consume. We understand how important it is to keep our bodies moving. We have so much more information to guide us in making choices about our life and lifestyle.

Our lives have been severely impacted

by COVID-19 over the last two years.

The general population knows more about viruses, variants, immunisation, and infection control than we did at the beginning of 2020. The science has been amazing.

Each time there is a surge in the presence of COVID-19, small groups of key staff meet regularly across Newcastle Anglican to identify and enact the best strategies for protecting the people we support and our staff. These groups meet, sometimes as often as twice per day, and draw on the resources of clinicians, care staff, IT leads, and staff involved in procurement, risk, and communications.

Health management has been at the heart of these meetings. There have been critical conversations about workflow, waste management, immunisation rates, vaccination requirements, testing arrangements, mental health support, infection control, ventilation, roster management, record-keeping, and much more.

One of the privileges we experience in Newcastle Anglican, is the opportunity to be involved in people’s lives because they have invited us to support them. We work with many people who experience health risks because of disability, ageing, social circumstances, and adverse life events.

When there is a health crisis, such as COVID-19, the people we support are often amongst the most vulnerable.

Right now, the impact of the Omicron

variant of COVID-19, appears to be waning. That doesn’t mean we are riskfree. We need to continue to balance our health management measures with our commitment to support people to flourish – enabling people to exercise as much choice as life within a pandemic allows.

We are warned that another variant of COVID-19 will come, and that we need to be careful with this year’s flu season.

We will see regular changes to health management measures for some time to come.

As the head of Newcastle Anglican, I am moved daily by the incredible partnership that we see between our staff and clergy, the people we support, and the families and advocates of those we support.

There is a profound commitment to work together to keep each other safe and well.

My heart is filled with thankfulness for people’s kindness and goodwill in these demanding times.

As a person of faith, who is inspired by the life and teaching of Jesus, I have thought a lot about the religious or spiritual response to the pandemic. Believing that our earthly journey is part of a bigger reality, I have reflected on how we might pray. Dr. Francis Collins is a leading scientist and professing Christian. He is a physician-geneticist who has been closely involved in developing and testing the vaccines. He says, “A lot of science went into this, but a lot of prayers too. It does feel like those prayers were answered. This feels like a gift from God, but you do have to unwrap that gift.” Asked about prayer in the pandemic, he muses, “How does God answer our prayers? Often it is through giving the opportunity for others to come to our rescue. And that’s what God is doing here." +Peter Peter Stuart became the Anglican Bishop of Newcastle in February 2018 having been the Assistant Bishop since 2009. He is the President of Anglican Care, the Newcastle Anglican Schools Corporation and the Samaritans. Since June 2021, he has been working closely with the Executive Leadership of these organisations to create a strong working partnership aimed at enhancing the support we provide to people and the regions we serve.

When restrictions eased on 11th October, we welcomed our visitors, family, and friends back to our residential homes. Our staff across Anglican Care were excited to see all the familiar faces visiting us again. CA Brown lodge welcomed their visitors back with a balloon tunnel and lollies on arrival.

COVID-19 has made life very difficult for everyone, especially those unable to visit their loved ones during the lockdown. We genuinely understand and appreciate our visitor's central role in making our homes a special place. We believe that if we support each other through these times, we can together ensure a safe home for our residents. Anglican Care is currently ensuring all staff are fully vaxed and return a negative RAT test before every shift, using high-quality protective gear and deploying lots of controls measures and cleaning. Although these measures will help, we still need your support. Please tell us if you or a family member has COVID-19 or COVID-19 symptoms and take a RAT test before visiting.

A Special Tribute to the Life of Sergeant Bert Le-Merton Anglican Care Resident As we begin 2022, it is only fitting that in this edition of Reflections, we pay tribute to the life and legacy of WWII Veteran and CA Brown Resident Bert Le-Merton, who, at 103 years young, passed peacefully on December 6, 2021, with the love of his family surrounding him.

The oldest son of Albert Padley Davis and Emma Jane Le-Merton, Leslie Albert Le-Merton was, in his own words, 'brought into the world by his mother' on November 18, 1918, at the Wagga Wagga District Hospital in the picturesque Riverina region of NSW. Brother to Gwen and William, Bert spent the majority of his youth in Sydney, and as a teen witnessed the infamous Captain Francis De Groot, astride his horse, cutting the ribbon to 'open' the Sydney Harbour Bridge on March 19, 1932, robbing Premier of the day, Jack Lang of the honour.

Bert left school at 16 before completing his intermediate certificate and entering the workforce. His real love was for road racing and track racing at the velodrome, and he spent many a day riding to Penrith or Wollongong in his early adult years.

At the age of 21, World War II had commenced, where Bert's service in the Australian Defence Forces began. After initial training at the Rutherford Camp as a Universal Trainee of the 35th Citizen's Military Force Battalion, Bert was then called up for the AIF joining the 'Devils Own', 2/13th Australian Infantry Battalion at Ingleburn. Bert had many vivid memories serving in North Africa and the Pacific with the 3 Section Mortar Platoon in the 2/13th Battalion, 20th Brigade, 9th Division of the AIF, his battalion being the first complete Australian unit to fight German troops during WWII. Engaging with forces of 3,000 on April 4, 1941, the battalion held firm against an army that vastly outnumbered their own before withdrawing to rest and joining the remainder of the division to enter Tobruk on April 10, 1941. The legendary 'Rats of Tobruk' defended the 'fortress' for eight months, with the 2/13th being the only Australian battalion to see out the siege. After being involved in some of the harshest conditions and combats, Bert luckily avoided any serious injury during his five and a half years of service… although Bert and his best mate and fellow 'Rat' Johnno 'Dagger' Dickson shared many a story that made Bert's family wonder how they survived!

Bert & Irene, walking partners at CA Brown Lodge Bert' met' his future wife Joan during his time in the AIF when best mate Johnno's mum and his sister (Joan) sent morale-boosting care packages from home. Bert and Joan formed a pen friendship until he came home and was invited to meet Joan in February 1946, where they promptly became engaged and married on September 27, 1947.

Married for 49 years, as a young couple, they initially settled in Chippendale before moving out to a small acreage in Plumpton Bert purchased for Joan (a 'bushy' at heart) in 1955. Plumpton became home and the much-loved community where they raised their two boys, Grant and Trent, for over 30 years.

As a civilian, Bert began working with the Australian Taxation Office.

He was a long-standing employee for 41 years before retiring in 1980, aged 61, upon Joan's desire to see Bert enjoy retirement! In 1990, Bert and Joan made their final move, settling in neighbouring suburb St Clair's. However, in 1996, Bert lost Joan, his beloved wife and matriarch of the family.

Bert's love of walking and keeping fit saw him become the Patron of Soldier On, the country's only charity supporting members of the Australian Defence Force to deliver holistic services in the prevention of veteran suicide and assistance in the transition for military men and women into civilian life through education and skills training.

Moving into Anglican Care's CA Brown Lodge in December 2020, Bert remained active by setting up indoor and outdoor walking tracks and inspired many residents to get active!

From the moment Bert arrived, he encouraged the team at Anglican Care to raise funds for Soldier On as a part of the "March On to Save Lives" campaign. Sergeant Bert stirred the nation to take action against veteran suicide and instigated a national conversation by walking 96km, the length of the Kokoda Track, during the month of March.

A team of Anglicare staff committed to the goal and "Team Bert" was formed. Walking alongside Bert was Residential Liaison Officer, Irene, Lifestyle and Wellbeing Officer, Sharon, Deputy of Nursing, Melissa and Toby, General Manager Residential Care Services. Bert's individual efforts not only raised a fantastic $116,000 but contributed to a staggering $1.85million for the March On campaign in 2021.

CA Brown Resident Liaison Officer, Irene Balkema, spent many hours walking with Bert said, 'I feel so much better for having had him in my life'.

Bert's unique character and infectious passion for helping those around him were recognised by the Australia Day Council of NSW, selecting Bert as a Finalist for Senior NSW Australian of the Year 2022. The ceremony was held at Luna Park in Sydney on November 15, 2021, shortly before Bert's 103rd birthday. Amongst the attendees were the honourable Margaret Beasley, Governor of NSW, and the Honourable Dominic Perrottet, Premier of NSW. Bert was unable to attend due to health reasons; however, he watched the ceremony with this family, his son, Trent, Daughter-in-law, Sandy, and Granddaughter Maddi, who could not be prouder of their father and grandfather.

Bert's 100 years celebration with family Bert was a true hero in every sense and was deservedly recognised with an OAM to honour the dedication of his life, service, and work in the 2022 Australia Day awards, In celebration of Bert's 103 years, on March 25, 2022, the Soldier On team has set the goal to walk 103km from Concord to Kiama for this year's 'March On to Save Lives' fundraising campaign. Bert's son Trent said the team at Soldier On loved Bert, were so thankful for the awareness he raised for veterans, and wanted his legacy to continue.

As a tribute to Bert and the hundreds of kilometres he walked, Soldier On has created a 'Bert Bear' mascot, with Bert's signature walking outfit, a red checked shirt, blue denim shorts, and 'Soldier On' cap. A uniquely special way to remember a uniquely special national hero.

It is excellent for your Health We know that people who cook at home eat a greater variety of foods than those who primarily eat out. The benefit of eating a broad and varied diet is that it stimulates our senses and encourages us to consume a broader range of nutrients, which decreases our risk of deficiency and malnutrition and leads to better overall health. And even better, we also know that when compared to people who predominantly eat out or opt for pre-prepared meals, those who cook their food at home eat meals in portions more aligned to their health and lifestyle goals.

It can be Relaxing Aside from being delicious and fuelling us, food can also be therapeutic. Cooking and baking can help relieve stress and provide us with an enormous sense of joy and purpose. Taking the time to prepare a nutritious meal in your home prioritises your health and well-being, positively impacts your memory, and boosts confidence in the kitchen.

Spin Poi

INTERNATIONAL DEMONSTRATION

Our residents at Cedar Wharf Lodge have recently been a part of a Spin Poi demonstration on an international Zoom meeting with Spin Poi and Dr Kate Reigle Van West. Spin Poi facilitators from New Zealand, China, Japan, India and the US were able to watch our residents perform a couple of Spin Poi routines with the guidance of Janine Warne. Janine Warne is a certified Spin Poi Instructor, and luckily for our residents, Janine is our Lifestyle & Wellbeing Coordinator at Cedar Wharf Lodge. Janine brings her experience and enthusiasm in Spin Poi to our residents, allowing them to enjoy this activity whilst improving their overall health.

WHAT IS SPIN POI ?

Poi is the name of the weight on the end of a flexible cord and what you do with that object is spin it in circles around your body. It is believed that poi originally came from the Māori, indigenous people of New Zealand.

Today, poi continues to play an essential role in Māoridom and across the globe as a form of performance, play, and fitness.

WHY IS SPIN POI GOOD FOR SENIORS ?

Poi is a form of physical exercise through gentle movement from a seated or standing position. It also increases cognitive activity and keeps the mind engaged. Poi is an activity for all levels of care that fosters lots of laughter and social interaction.

THE BENEFITS OF SPIN POI Spin Poi conducted a clinical trial on older adults physical and cognitive function after playing poi for one month. The results were awe-inspiring, with significant improvement in balance, grip strength and attention.

Garden Gnomes have a special place in the heart of Grahame "Jacko' Geatches Meet Graham Geatches, Nickname "Jacko" for his skill and 10month stint with a jackhammer on the top floor of Swansea RSL Club, where he also became famous for his BBQing skills. Jacko played for Western Suburbs Magpies, 1st-grade rugby league in the '70s.

At 74 years of age, grandad to eight, and greatgrandad of thirteen, former steel worker, Jacko commenced receiving a Home Care Package with Anglican Care early in 2021. Along with a Home Care Package, Jacko also attends the Alkira Day Centre twice a week and would like to start volunteering there in the near future.

With a love of volunteering and community service, Jacko has become popular in Belmont for his love of gardening. He plants a wide variety of seasonal vegetables and herbs in the front yard of his house, then washes the produce, puts it in sealed bags, and places it on his front fence for anyone to help themselves.

Jacko's garden was not only full of fantastic produce, it was also home to his garden gnomes and many other ornaments. Devastatingly Jacko's ornaments were smashed by vandals who threw them on the road on Boxing Day night. The vandals also stole Jacko's Australia Day flag, which he has flown outside his home since returning from the war in the 1970s.

Hearing this story, Lauren Carlson started a facebook group to rally support, delivering new gnomes and other pieces to replenish and return Jacko's garden to the one he knows and loves. A facebook group member contacted the Federal Member for Shortland Pat Conroy to get Jacko a new flag, and the community also contributed donations towards a security camera system. Jacko was overjoyed at the kindness and generosity of his local Lake Macquarie Community.

Adopt a Pet Program

CA BROWN LODGE Our Residents at CA Brown Lodge have a new Adopt a Pet program! Friends, staff, and our CA Brown Retirement Village residents kindly donated our furry friends.

Everyone had a wonderful time picking out their pet and receiving an adoption certificate.

Cultivate lasting friendships, Sow seeds of kindness Anglican Care Friendship Garden

This recently created community Friendship Garden was the idea of members of the Anglican Care Friendship Group who loved gardening as a hobby but were unable to due to various reasons. This shared love of gardening prompted a collective agreement to establish their Garden on site at the Central Coast Community office.

Planning ensued, as the Friendship Group does not attract any funding, Central Coast Freemasons made a kind donation to purchase several raised garden beds. Once constructed, a day of gardening was enjoyed, with various vegetables, herbs, and flowers planted.

Care Worker and organizer of the Group, Lilian Wallace says, "The Friendship Group has a fantastic sense of fun.

When everyone arrives, the room becomes alive with the sound of talking, jokes, and laughter".

This joy and banter extends throughout the day, whether at morning tea, during group activities, playing games, doing crafts, puzzling over quizzes or gardening. It is clear this initiative provides a remarkable impact on members' well-being and creates positive outcomes for all those who join.

One of our exceptional resident's at Warnervale Gardens Lorna, celebrated her birthday, 101 years. Lorna's day included flowers, gifts, cake, and many special birthday messages.

Melbourne Cup

Residents of Kilpatrick Court had a marvellous time enjoying the festivities on Melbourne Cup day.

One of our resident picked the Trifecta on the day. Fashions afield, sweeps, nibbles, drinks, and laughs with good friends are what make a great Melbourne Cup day.

Our team at Alkira Respite and Day Therapy Centre enjoyed their 'Cooks Club' session. With an Oktoberfest theme, the team went into action making apple strudel. Yumm!
