Our CEO’s message to you Welcome to the first issue of Reflections for 2019. I hope that as you are reading our newsletter you have enjoyed a happy and safe festive season and that you are enjoying 2019 as we move into the lovely time of year that Autumn brings with it. I’m sure some cooler weather will be much enjoyed by everyone after such a long hot summer.

We have certainly hit the ground running in 2019 with a lot to share in this issue as we continue to deliver on our vision of enhancing the lives of the older people whom we provide care and services to. Work continues at great pace on our C A Brown development at Booragul. The building is really starting to take shape with completion, both internal and external, scheduled for May 2020. We have also made positive progress with our Gloucester project, holding the official Ground Breaking Ceremony on 27 February, with construction anticipated to commence in May 2019. You can read more about the ceremony and see pictures from the day on page 4.

Talking all things property, we were also pleased to be advised that we received funding in the 2018 Aged Care Regional Rural and Remote Infrastructure funding round. The funding will be used for works focussing on solar, lighting and emergency infrastructure at Cedar Wharf Lodge and Bishop Tyrrell Place. Works will commence during 2019.

On more good news, we recently achieved Bronze partnership status with Sustainability Advantage. Our ongoing sustainability initiatives are being led by Deb Matthews, our Contracts & Procurement Manager, who has been able to achieve the Bronze Partnership in conjunction with other Anglican Care team members, in 6 months, a fantastic outcome given it is a 2 year program. Deb has also been successful with her application to be included in the Sustainability Practitioner Programme with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Another fantastic achievement – Deb is the first aged care recipient of the practitioner program. We’ll provide more information about the different sustainability initiatives that have contributed to our Bronze status in the next issue of Reflections in our twice yearly ‘Sustainability Special’.

We have some important updates in this issue on both the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and the introduction of the new Aged Care Quality Standards, which I urge people to read. Along with the introduction of the new standards, the Aged Care Quality Agency has changed its name to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, in line with the Government’s commitment to streamlining the aged care system. With regard to the Royal Commission, I want to reiterate Anglican Care’s support of the work that the Commission is doing and the opportunities to strengthen and improve the aged care system in Australia. Anglican Care, along with the majority of aged care providers across the country, responded to a request from the Royal Commission for information in early January this year. The Commission requested information regarding any incidents in the past 5 years where care has been sub-standard; why incidents occurred; details of what we do to provide high quality and safe services; issues providers experience supporting older people to move around the aged care and health care system; suggestions for improvements; and examples of innovation and good practice.

2019 will see us continue to look for ways to provide new and innovative programs and services to seniors. We were recently successful in gaining approval to deliver Short-Term Restorative Care to people on the Mid-Coast which will increase the care options available to people in that area utilising wellness, reablement and restorative approaches. We also recently introduced the use of ‘Virtual Reality’ into our education programs and believe there is great scope for this fantastic technology, both for our employees from an education perspective and for our residents and consumers within our Lifestyle & Wellbeing programs.

WEDDING BELLS AT ELMDS In December of last year, something very special happened at our East Lake Macquarie Dementia Service. We were lucky enough to host the wedding of two beautiful people – Stan and Dale. It was so wonderful to witness two people, who have known heartache and struggle, finally find happiness in each other’s company and love to sustain them in

their lives. Many tears were shed watching something so lovely! We wish Stan and Dale the happiest of married lives!

STORM MARRIED COUPLES LOVE was in the air as 9 couples living together at Taree’s Storm Village in Taree, celebrated Valentine’s Day All with great stories to tell, Ronald and Beryl Rickard met when they were just 14 years old and have been married for 63 years. Originally from Sydney, the couple moved to Old Bar and then became residents of Storm Village in May 2018.

Covered from head to toe in mud was the way Keith Taylor met his soon to be wife Irene “Joan” during the 1950 floods in the Maitland area. Working on a dairy farm and being the gentleman he is Keith came to the aid of Irene’s family and that was the start of their 63 year partnership. Valda and Harold, married for 68 years, love nothing more than the drive in to town for a coffee, while John “Duncan” and Amor Futter met in Zambia before moving to Australia also celebrating 68 years together.

Married for 57 years Edith and Hector MacAskill raised a young family while working with the missions on the Soloman Islands.

Vacey and Horace Mepham met at a dance at Newcastle’s legendary Palais Royale and married 54 years ago. Ronald and Margaret “Ruth” Murray spent most of their 58 years together on a 2000 acre cattle property, and the babies of the group at 21 years married are Alex and Olive Ives who met at church in Harrington.

The final couple of the happy group Ken and Pat Randall met at a local dance at Coffs Harbour Bowling Club. Pat was living at Boambee and Ken was living at Coramba.

meet our staff Jessica To be a wonderful aged care nurse, you require compassion and dedication. Jessica Robinson, one of our Care Assistant’s at Kilpatrick Court, has both along with a drive to succeed.

A recipient of our June Flett Scholarship, Jessica combines work and studies, as she follows her chosen career path to become a Registered Nurse. Nursing is in the family she says, ‘My mum was a nurse and I’ve always wanted to do the same and work in aged care. I’m hooked on aged care’.

Jessica looked on from her nearby home in Toronto as Kilpatrick Court took shape and prophesied that one day she’d work there. She was right.

February of last year, after completing her studies to be a Care Assistant, Jessica joined the team at Kilpatrick Court. “I love older people and consider it to be an honour to spend time with them”, explains Jessica.

Whilst continuing her studies to be a Registered Nurse, Jessica has used the funds awarded to her through the June Flett Scholarship to subside her wage during placement and pay for practical things such as work shoes, a laptop and textbooks of which she says, without the scholarship she wouldn’t be able to afford. THE LAUNCH OF OUR PAMPER-ME PROGRAM Launched on Valentine’s Day at Kilpatrick Court, our NEW Pamper-Me program has become part our innovative Lifestyle & Wellbeing activities on offer to our 1400 residents and consumers in the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid Coast regions. Our new program aims to give both men and women, much enjoyed make-overs and pampering treatments. The Pamper Trolleys will remain on the move among our three regions, residing on our Lifestyle Resource Van “Rene”. We all deserve and love a pampering every now and again, that’s why our new pamper trolleys are stocked with all kinds of goodies including make-up, nail care, hairdressing and skincare. Something for everyone. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser joined our residents, consumers, Hunter Auxiliary and guests, including 87-year-old resident and Pamper-Me program volunteer Edward Jayne, who was a sales representative for cosmetic and hair company L’Oreal for 50 years.

The Pamper-Me program has been made possible by the generous support of the Anglican Care Hunter Auxiliary who have raised over $500,000 for the organisation. We can’t thank them enough for all their hard work and dedication to enhancing the life of our seniors.

GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY IN GLOUCESTER Anglican Care hosted an historic ground-breaking ceremony on the site of their Gloucester Aged Care project in the presence of the Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, the Right Reverend Dr Peter Stuart, Bishop of Newcastle, Anglican Care Chair Malcolm McDonald and CEO Colin Osborne, local dignitaries, staff and the community. The ground-breaking, which took place on the Clement Street site on February 27, is a significant step for the $20 million state-of-the-art purpose-built aged care facility to match the needs of the ageing community in Gloucester. Stage one of the development includes a residential aged care home with single rooms with ensuites, a large multi-purpose area to facilitate resident and community activities, events and lifestyle programs. It will also include lounge and dining rooms, a reception area, hairdresser, allied health and therapy room and administration. Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie has been supportive of the project from its inception and is excited to see the construction phase commence.

To view the statement please visit our website www.anglicancare.com.au NEW QUALITY STANDARDS FOR AGED CARE Aged Care providers offering Commonwealth subsidised aged care services are required to comply with a new set of standards.

Traditionally there have been two sets of standards, one for residential aged care and another for home care packages.

The Australian Government has recently set new standards that will cover both residential aged care and home care that clearly define what good care should look like. Aged care providers will be assessed in line with these standards and must be able to provide evidence of their compliance with and performance against them from 1 July 2019.

The Quality Standards focus on outcomes for people receiving care and reflect the level of care and services the community can expect from organisations that provide Commonwealth subsidised aged care services.

Each standard says what the consumer can expect. Aged Care providers need to meet an “outcome” and demonstrate how they are meeting that outcome. The intent of the new standards is to make it easier to check that people are receiving good care, both from the perspective of the provider and the person receiving the care and their family. There is an emphasis on collaboration and partnership with families and on the provision of person centred care, all of which have formed an important part of Anglican Care’s philosophies for many years.

We look forward to continuing our work as a provider of contemporary, high quality services. At all times we aspire to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for our residents and consumers, including the broader group of their carers and are confident in our ability to provide care and support within the framework of the new standards.

There are eight standards, and each one is about an aspect of care that contributes to safety, health and wellbeing.

1. Consumer dignity and choice 2. Ongoing assessment and planning with consumers 3. Personal care and clinical care 4. Services and supports for daily living 5. Organisation’s service environment 6. Feedback and complaints 7. Human resources 8. Organisational governance Each of the Quality Standards is expressed in three ways: • A statement of outcome for the consumer • A statement of expectation for the organisation • Organisational requirements to demonstrate that the standard has been met.

What’s NEWS? EVENTS JUST GONE PADDLE FEST - TORONTO SUNRISE ROTARY A huge thank you to all the staff and their delightful families that joined us to compete in this year’s Paddlefest. It was a perfect day to be on the Lake and be part of the fun. Our team enjoyed the dragon boat and outrigger races. No doubt, there were a few sore shoulders at the end of the day. Fabulous day Toronto Sunrise Rotary group, we look forward to your next event!

MEMORY WALK Memory Walk is a fantastic opportunity to help Australia Get Active and Beat Dementia by raising awareness and funds for Dementia Australia. Dementia is the condition that will have the greatest social and economic impact of our time. In NSW there are an estimated 146,007 people living with dementia and the services of Dementia Australia have never been in higher demand.

The Hunter event was held at Speers Point Park. Our team were excited to be there with many bringing along their family and friends.

Thanks to all of our staff, their families and friends who walked, jogged or sprinted their way around the track and joined the spirit of the day - great job. We hope to see you again in 2020!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY We celebrated a very special 105th birthday in January of this year with Jean Watts from Warnervale Gardens. We of course want to know the secret to her longevity. Robyn says it’s all in the genes but we do know that Jean has been a life long user of Oil of Olay!

A beautiful, caring lady, Jean has many interesting stories to tell. She grew up in a family who were involved in the film industry and has met many famous stars such as Alfred Hitchcock, Charlton Heston, Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier.

RETIREMENT LIVING Author: Kathy Bullock We independent living residents at Storm Retirement Taree number just 15 at the moment. We enjoy monthly bus outings together and meet for morning tea once every 3 months to celebrate birthdays.

However, last October we found ourselves enjoying being part of a much bigger community gathering. Arranged by Anglican Care’s Marketing Manager, Kylie Jacques, all areas of “Storm” (High Care, Low Care & Memory Unit residents) as well as ourselves, staff and volunteers, all came together at Club Taree for a social half-day.

The venue was spacious with attractive indoor décor along with pleasant views from the windows of the golf greens & shrubbery. Morning tea and a very tasty lunch were provided.

At our tables we interacted over games & quizzes and some enjoyed the soft and gentle touch of youthful face-painters. Our Nancy & Pam were among such recipients whose faces were quite a delightful art work when finished. A capable guitarist and vocalist Mick Fetch entertained us with old time songs. We weren’t backwards in singing along jollily too!

A variety of entertainment came from the floor as well as from the stage. A youthful Aboriginal dance troupe moved around the tables, their bodies painted & their movements so unique to their culture. A Taree High School dance group amazed us with their agility, a routine which seemed to be a blend of ballet & gymnastic movements. A choir from that same school delivered beautiful harmonies in their renditions of several modern songs.

The day brought together such a diverse group of people from across the age spectrum, all interacting, giving of themselves as able and taking in what others had to offer.

We saw ourselves as part of a wider community and were also encouraged that a young and able generation is coming on. Their caring personalities and contributions touched our lives positively that day; maybe we touched theirs as well.

I was just thinking how the time has flown since our last Retirement Living News was published. Christmas been and gone, but the weight gained with all the festivities we have enjoyed has stayed on!

It seems this year has got off to a bad start, with the Royal Commission’s adverse results in the banking industry. Do you remember when your local Bank Manager welcomed you into his office and HE made the decision to grant you your Home Loan, it seemed so much easier then.

We are now seeing the new Residential Care Building rising high above us, up to the second level in part, a much larger construction than we imagined it would be.

Since our last Newsletter in the 2018 Spring Edition of Reflections, we have enjoyed many wonderful day trips, a few of the highlights being: Touring the Back Roads to the Hunter Valley Vineyards, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen before Christmas and All Saints Church Open Door Café at Nelson Bay for a scrumptious early Christmas Luncheon. On our way there, we detoured to Anglican Care’s Northwood Village where the residents served us a wonderful morning tea, we also inspected two of the lovely new villas.

This year, after a delicious morning tea at Vincent’s Coffee Shop at “The Coliseum Antiques” Mayfield, we went overseas to Stockton via The Ferry for lunch at the Tomago Bowling Club. On our most recent day trip, we enjoyed a fantastic morning tea at the “Born Again” Op Shop at Morisset, then we travelled down to the Historic Nora Head Lighthouse on the Central Coast, the views along the coastline were amazing, then onto the Halekulani Bowling Club for a very enjoyable lunch.

Australia Day was celebrated with a Sausage Sizzle tea followed by a hilarious Aussie Movie, this evening was enjoyed by over 30 of our residents including my “Littlies”, who also had a wonderful time.

In February, we were treated to a special evening of “Good Food, Great Company”, arranged by Anglican Care’s Hospitality Services Manager Barry McKibbin and catered for by Executive Chef Aaron Campbell and Hospitality Service Staff. It was really appreciated by all who attended.

Together with our Happy Hours, special functions, games afternoons, exercise classes, craft (have a chat) afternoons, life in our community certainly is not dull.
