The season of Advent began on December 2 and continued through to Christmas. Each year, those four Sundays in Advent provide us opportunity to celebrate the coming, or the advent of Jesus as one of us, a baby born in Bethlehem 2000 or so years ago.

We may well not have the concept of charity as we do, shown by Jesus.

One thing about Christmas that would have been a big part of many of our recent celebrations was the giving and receiving of gifts. It may be the case that the gifts we received were really important and valuable to us. But there is one gift which is absolutely important- the gift of Jesus himself.

As we reflect on the gift giving and receiving of this Christmas just gone, let’s make sure we don’t miss out on receiving the most important gift- Jesus himself!

While the gifts we received from friends and family may be important and appreciated (and if we didn’t receive them, we might be the poorer), it’s worth thinking through what life would be like if the gift of Jesus hadn’t been given to us.

The list could go on and on, what we would not have if Jesus hadn’t come.

Jesus and his ministry, his teaching and preaching, his life and death and resurrection have changed the face of the world for the better and continue to make a really positive contribution.

If Jesus hadn’t come, we would not have the knowledge of God that we do through Jesus, or the opportunity to actually know God, as we do now.

We would not have the opportunity for the forgiveness of our sins that we do through the death of Jesus.

Death would not have been defeated as it has been through the resurrection of Jesus. The kingdom of God would not be close as it is through the ministry of Jesus.

Teddies Providing Comfort To Young People

For around 20 years members of the St Lukes Anglican Parish have been knitting teddy bears for the community. Organisations such as Samaritans Purse, SA Ambulance and SMG Pastoral Care Workers in local schools have used the teddies when a child needs some extra comfort during times of grief, loss, separation, family breakdown, anxiety as well as in school sick rooms - when a child is feeling miserable, they have something to hold on to. The group also knits balls with a textured centre which suit children with Autism and others who don’t want a teddy.

“It’s a gift of love, the children receiving them are going to cuddle them. When you cuddle that toy, you can feel God’s love going through you and the love of the person who knitted it” said Denise.

Fiona Vanderlinden, an SMG PCW from a nearby school says “Over the past few years, we have had some junior school students dealing with some challenging events and issues in their lives. I had noticed that when we (staff) sit and talk and comfort

these students, we are so restricted in physical contact. I was very keen to receive the teddies, so students would have something to hug. I distributed the teddies among staff to use or give away when needed. The staff loved the idea and the teddies help to gently start conversations and comfort the student at the same time. I am so grateful to the lovely ladies who make these teddies, I wish they could see the students faces when they receive one.”

St Luke’s Parish has made hundreds of teddies over the years for SMG PCWs to use in the local schools. If you would like to support your local Pastoral Care Worker, please contact SMG.

St Elizabeth of Hungary Anglican Church were co-organisers of the Welcome to Australia event that took place at the SA Aquatic & Leisure centre on November 24.

The event, which along with the Warradale Parish, was hosted by the City of Marion, SA Aquatic, Rotary International and various local sporting clubs, and sought to invite new arrivals to Australia to enjoy an afternoon of sporting activities followed by a free barbecue.

Peter Brown is a parishioner at St Elizabeth’s and part of the team that contributed to the successful running of the event, “This is the sixth time we have run the Welcome to Australia event over the past 6 years. It began as an initiative of the Parish of Warradale in conjunction with the SA Aquatic Centre as a way of reaching out to new arrivals to Australia and making them feel welcome to our country. The Parish was looking for extra ways to connect with the community and serve it.”

Peter explained that it’s not just a chance to meet those who are new to the country, but is also a way to introduce them to some of the unique aspects of Australia, “It is a free, fun, family-oriented event, which introduces them to some of the iconic aspects of our culture for example, swimming, cricket, Aussie Rules Football, basketball, and a typical Aussie BBQ, which includes halal and vegetarian options. The event has evolved over the past six years and now also includes representatives from the local Surf Life Saving Clubs, face-painting, and koalas and kangaroos brought by the Koala Rescue Team.”

Churches can take a positive leadership role in welcoming newcomers to our country because we have grassroots connections with our local communities, which government agencies and other organisations often don’t have.

A united effort between the church and broader community has meant that these events are well prepared, which Peter says is important given they don’t know in advance how many will be in attendance. “The response from the Parish has been extremely supportive and several people within

our church freely give of their time to help run the event. The response from the community has been very good. It is very well received and, considering that we don’t know in advance how many people might come, attendances have always been strong. This year we had approximately 70 people attend, most of whom were recent arrivals to Australia. We usually give people an opportunity to write down any comments that they wish to make about the event and they are always positive, which is most encouraging for us. Those who come always seem to enjoy themselves and genuinely feel accepted.”

It’s a lead that Peter hopes more churches might follow in the future, “Churches can take a positive leadership role in welcoming newcomers to our country because we have grassroots connections with our local communities, which government agencies and other organisations often don’t have. Parishioners live in the community and are aware of local resources that may be helpful for those new to our area. We are also more easily able to coordinate with other clubs and groups within our community who may also be interested in helping newcomers join in local activities.”

Warradale Offers Warm Welcome

DUEL IN THE STREETS OF ADELAIDE

By Helen Stein -North Road Cemetery Little has changed in politics over the last 120 years. Politicians then, as now, are vocal and argumentative in Parliament, and often resort to insults and namecalling.

Such was the case in 1892, in a verbal altercation between prominent conservative member of the Legislative Council Richard Chaffey Baker, and Charles Cameron Kingston. with him, with intent to instigate, excite, and provoke the said Richard Chaffey Baker to fight a duel with and against him.”

During heated debate in a parliamentary session, Baker denounced Kingston as “a coward, a bully and a disgrace to the legal profession”.

Mr. Kingston’s response was swift and severe, describing Baker as “false as a friend, treacherous as a colleague, mendacious as a man, and utterly untrustworthy in every relationship of public life”.

Kingston, who was known to be aggressive and combative, did not stop there. He obtained two matching pistols, and sent one via a messenger to Baker, challenging him to a duel!

The drama was set to be played out at 1.30 p.m. on 23 December 1892, outside the Adelaide Town Hall. Baker wisely handed the letter to the Police Commissioner William Peterswald (buried VLT EE2, Path 6 South), and

sent a message back to Kingston informing him that he would attend. At the allocated time of 1.30pm, Kingston arrived at Victoria Square with a fully loaded pistol and was promptly arrested.

Two days later, on 29 December, 1892, Kingston faced court charged with “that on December 27 he did unlawfully, wickedly, wilfully, and maliciously compose, write, and send and cause to be delivered to Richard Chaffey Baker a certain letter and paper writing containing a challenge to fight a duel

Kingston was represented by Josiah Symon Q.C. (buried Plot 857, Path 7 South), and was ordered “to keep the peace for 12 months in two sureties of £250 each and his own recognizance for £500”. Three months later, Kingston was elected Premier of South Australia.

Richard Chaffey Baker died at his country estate, Morialta, Norton Summit on 18 March 1911, and is buried in Plot 658, Path 9 South.

The amount of money raise is not a sign of success, but it certainly encouraged them. What God sees as success is a heart that desires to serve the spread of the gospel here and thorough out the world (see Matt 28:16-20)”

The youth group at Tea Tree Gully (TTG) Anglican Church known as SWAT Youth recently raised over $5500 for the Diocese of Awerial in South Sudan.

This was an initiative of the group to support Bishop David Akou who had previously been part of the TTG church family, “Bishop David Akau Kuol used to be a part of our congregation at Tea Tree Gully Anglican”, explained Ashlyn Maude (SWAT fundraising team leader), “His eldest daughter also used to attend the youth group.”

Michael Rogers | Diaconate For the past four years I have been studying (and have now completed) a bachelor of Theology, through Charles Sturt University, via St Barnabas College. Prior to this I worked in the classical music section of the ABC for 25 years. I had wanted to study theology for the last 20 years but didn’t have the confidence to go to university. Ultimately, I felt I was led to study and the experience has been transformational.

Being a student at St Barnabas College, participating in the Formation Program, as well as ministry placements at St Columba’s, St Oswald’s, All Hallows Aged Care, and the RAH – has all contributed to my path towards ordained ministry. Ordination occurs in the context of community, it is a community effort, shaped by God.

For me, it is possible through blessing from God, family, friends, university lecturers, clergy, ministry supervisors, congregations, aged care residents, and hospital patients.

Faith involves a lifetime of discovery, not just in an academic way, but also in the reality of experiencing God at work in our lives, and the lives of those around us. To this end I feel fortunate to participate in hospital chaplaincy, aged care chaplaincy, and the parish setting.

Within this dynamic, I feel called to ordained ministry.

I am married to Joanne, a physics teacher with a PhD in education. We have three teenage children, Rebekah, Jacob and Thomas. At times my attention is drawn to 50’s cars and guitars, the world game, and the African American contribution to music in the 20th century.

Deborah Jeanes | Diaconate My faith journey, shared with a supportive and loving family, started from childhood and includes meeting my husband at All Saints’ Seacliff and 25 years’ worship at the Coromandel Valley Anglican Parish. My professional background of education in secondary teaching, youth alternative education and lecturing to International students and migrants, led to a Training Management role with Schools Ministry Group. It was through this transformative experience, I was called to change direction, to full-time theological study and enter into a time of discernment and formation.

During this time it has been affirmed that my calling is to the distinctive or vocational diaconate; a role with one foot firmly based in a parish serving and supporting the community in prayer

and the call to community action. In the community I seek to walk alongside those in the fringes of our society, serving with no strings attached; sharing the love of Jesus by being in the world.

I love. I know it is only by God’s grace that I am here, and it will be his grace that will sustain me in what lies ahead.

Michele Yuen | Priesthood With my faith firmly grounded in the Anglican tradition, I find myself placed in multi-faith chaplaincy roles, at Flinders University as part of the Oasis Chaplaincy team and as a Relief Chaplain at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital; a complimentary role to an existing position as Play Therapy Volunteer. I have also continued my ecumenical involvement on Scripture Union Council and as a member of the Anglican Ecumenical Network.

For the last 12 months, I have been supported and pastorally cared for in my ministry training role at St Michael’s, Mitcham. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow in faith and understanding with the Mitcham Parish, in the role of Honorary Deacon Assistant.

Shane Ellery | Diaconate The direction of my life changed forever when at age 27 I put my confidence in the Lord Jesus. In many ways it was an unremarkable moment, but at the same time I knew that something profound and permanent had just taken place. In Jesus I finally found both a reason for and an answer to the deep longings that had been a constant unsettling force in my life to that point. For me, receiving Christ was like coming home, and I have been living in his grace and seeking to faithfully follow him ever since. That was eleven years ago.

The pathway into ordained ministry for me in the Anglican Church was neither obvious nor easy. The call of Jesus upon my life was clear – I was to offer my life for his service – but just what that meant in real terms on the ground has required a lot of working through. In the end, I have come to realise that it is my heart’s desire, under God, to be a pastor. Once that vocation was awakened in my mind and heart, it would not let me go. I look forward now to exercising and growing my pastoral gifts as a deacon in the church

The pathway to ordained ministry was completely unexpected. Prior to my ordination as Deacon, in my personal prayer life, I was asking Jesus, how am I to serve you? I was already leading worship music and reading the scriptures in the service, serving on the parish council, attending (and had led) a bible study group. One morning I awoke to scripture of John 21:15-17 where God asked me to feed my lambs, take care of my sheep, feed my sheep if I love Jesus. I prayed and reflected with others to what God was asking of me.

My journey to ordination is one of taking small steps and exploring my call.

Early in the discernment period, I heard the call to Parish ministry and followed the leading of the Holy Spirit and this has not changed.

After great reflection, I can now see that my own spirituality and spiritual growth and serving in in my parish, coupled with experiences working in hospitality and Information Technology consulting, post graduate business management studies was preparation for ministry.

I am currently a Deacon and will become an Assistant Priest based in the Anglican Parish of Glenelg. I have formed a Youth Group for middle school aged children, restarted bible fellowship group, which has grown from one to two groups, facilitated communion services in local aged care facilities. I also work with homeless, low income people in the Glenelg area and am active in an Ecumenical group with the Uniting, Lutheran, and Catholic Churches in the local area.

Wendy Morecroft | Priesthood I have spent most of my life in the Anglican Church, firstly at St Peter’s & St Paul’s in Pt Pirie, as a teenager at St Martin’s Campbelltown and as an adult, mostly at Holy Innocents Belair.

During my ministry training I have been

placed at St Cuthbert’s & St Christopher’s in Prospect, St Philip’s Somerton Park and for the last twelve months I have been the Assistant Curate at St Peter’s Cathedral. I first enrolled to study a single subject of theology at St Barnabas College in 2011, purely out of interest, and became “hooked” on theology.

It was in meeting women in ministry and people in different forms of ministry at St Barnabas, that my much earlier calls to ordination made sense and I began to realise how God could use my particular gifts to his good purposes. This came at a time in my life when I was free of child rearing and was able to pursue study and enter a time of discernment and formation for ministry.

I feel honoured and privileged to have been trained as a deacon by the clergy and laity of St Peter’s Cathedral and am so happy that I am able remain here for another year of training time as a priest. Thank you to all my family, friends, clergy, parishioners, colleagues, lecturers, mentors, spiritual directors, supervisors and fellow-students who have taught and encouraged me in my journey so far. I give thanks to God for each and every one of them.

Worship on a Tropical Island

By Bishop Chris McLeod While it is difficult to seek permission from the immediate family of our beloved brother in Christ, the Late Bishop Mabo, I was able to consult with a Torres Strait Islander Clergy and Laity on the right cultural protocols involved of the use of names of a deceased Torres Strait Islander. The use of the name is only used with permission with appropriate Torres Strait Islander protocols. +Chris McLeod

One of the great blessings that have come my way is the privilege of worshipping with my Indigenous Anglican brothers and sisters, over many years, and in many places. I have worshipped in the bush, in remote communities, on the edge of cities, in struggling city centres, throughout Australia, and with the Maori in Aotearoa with a congregation that included first nations’ people from the United States of America, Hawaii, Canada, and Australia. I have learnt so much from these experiences, and I have been incredibly enriched by them.

One experience that left an indelible mark on me, and that was the funeral service on Thursday Island for our beloved in Christ, the late Bishop Mabo, the bishop of the Torres Straits Islands.

There was much in the service that was familiar to me. It was clearly Anglican, and taken from ‘A Prayer Book for Australia’, but, importantly, it included Torres Strait Islander culture at many points. I felt like I was being drawn into another world. It was a Gospel shaped world where life and death both have their rightful place. The service was both a celebration and an expression of deep sadness, but all the time a service of great hope in the power of Christ’s resurrection. Let me try and take you into this world.

Most non-Indigenous Church services are shaped by time restraints: starting on time and finishing on time. The sermon, prayers, and music should not be too long. With Indigenous worship all that goes out the window! Time seems to stand still. To visit Thursday Island for a funeral takes three days.

You must arrive the day before and leave the day after. There are only few flights from Cairns to Horn Island, and then there is a ferry ride to Thursday Island. A lovely little sea trip of about 20 minutes. The funeral service was held in the former Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Carpentaria, All Souls and St Bartholomew’s, with the sides of the church open to catch the lovely sea breezes. On the day of the funeral the service started with a viewing at 8.00am. The service itself was scheduled to start at 10.00am.

However, most people came at 8.00am.

The service included wonderful Torres Strait Islander singing and music. There was a sermon by the Bishop of North Queensland, the Right Reverend Bill Ray, and then a number of eulogies given by family, colleagues, and friends. I was privileged to be able to say a few words on behalf of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council. The service was a Eucharist and most, if not all,

communicated. I would estimate a congregation of well over 600 people; many were seated outside because the church was full to bursting. There was more singing and prayers, and then we left for the burial.

As we travelled to the cemetery people stopped in the streets to watch the hearse pass by and pay their last respects. Children came out of the school to do the same. The burial took place in the Island’s cemetery, where there was some more praying and singing, and then the burial itself. The coffin was lowered into the grave, and then the young men took turns filling in the grave. After the grave was filled, the women decorated the grave with flowers, and a simple cross was placed at its head. More prayers were said, and more singing. Susan and I returned to our room about 4.00pm, but we were not finished yet!

At 6.00pm it was time to have a feast: more singing, and wonderful exotic food. Our gracious and generous hosts made sure that I sampled all the local delicacies on offer: crocodile, turtle, and dugong. This celebration of life went well on into the night, and what a day and night it was. It was beautiful balmy night in a tropical paradise. Susan and I returned to our room tired, but feeling very privileged to have been part of this celebration of life.

I have called this article ‘Worship on a Tropical Island’, and so it was. From the viewing of the deceased to the feasting at the end of day the whole time was an act of worship. The word worship comes from an old English word meaning ‘to give worth’, and we certainly did that this day. We often forget that a funeral is an act of worship. There is a focus on the deceased, and that is right, but we also need to remember that a funeral is an act of worship of the God who ‘gives and takes away, Blessed be the name of the Lord’ (Job 1: 21). An Indigenous act of worship reminds us that in our time poor world there is something far richer to consider than time management: the gift of life given to us by God, and, lived and celebrated in all its fullness (John 10: 10).

A Year in the

Life of AFES

As always, the year kicked off in high spirits with our annual Commencement Camp where we welcomed 48 new university students and provided an opportunity for them to make some friends before heading into uni. Following on from that, O’week saw ESers help in various was to engage the campus at the stall and other events on during the week.

Semester 1 kicked off with a series through John 13 and 14 on “The Unexpected Jesus” in the lead-up to Easter Mission. Bible Study Groups were up and running too. We had 211 students enrolled in groups across North Terrace - which is encouraging to see.

E-team continued with various people meeting on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to pray and go out and do walk up evangelism. I am always encouraged by the team’s boldness and conviction as they express our vision of reaching the 35000 on North Terrace with the good news of Jesus Christ, this way.

One of our highlight events of the year is Mid-Year Conference on the topic “The Cross of Christ”. It was great to be stretched on how we think about the cross and how it impacts our lives today. The never disappointing Ultimate frisbee competition was well contested this year and MESH faculty (Maths/ Eng/Science/Health) managed to bring the trophy back to Adelaide Uni. All in all, it was a great week away to grow, fellowship and have fun.

Semester 2 kicked off with Bible Study Groups going through Daniel and Titus.

Fellowship and Training also kicked off with courses offered in discipleship, preaching and engaging with culture.

This year for Jesus week we made the proposition to our campus that “There must be more to Life…”. We had 190 people come along to the great debate and an average of just under 80 people attending each of the public meetings.

It was encouraging to hear many stories of ESers sharing the gospel with different people on campus.

My prayer for you as we reflect on 2018 and look towards 2019, like Paul prayed for the Ephesians, is for God to strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts with faith.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve Evangelical Students as President this year. It has been a valuable experience and one I will treasure for the rest of my life.

All Together Now Wouldn’t it be great if all Christians of whatever persuasion all got together, put aside their particular wish list for worship, and united in prayer for a common cause?

Well guess what? That happens at a World Day of Prayer (WDP) service!

Yes, once a year on the first Friday in March, over 170 countries participate in the same service. This ecumenical service focuses on a chosen country and is written by a group of women from that country. The whole event takes much co-operation and planning, and as you can imagine, lots of give-and-take.

It begins at International level, passes to a National Committee and on to the State Committee whose job it is promote the services throughout South Australia and Northern Territory and to distribute the provided materials.

In this way, services are held in big cities, small villages, country towns, care facilities and schools all around God’s wonderful world.

By Heather Cooper, President State WDP Committee Many of you have possibly been to one such service and may not have been particularly impressed, but if you consider what has happened to bring it about, you have to be amazed that it can happen at all!

The money collected at the services goes to Christian projects in the focus country.

We call it “informed prayer and prayerful action”. You can learn more about WDP and the focus country on the website at www.worlddayofprayeraustralia.org The focus for 2019 is on the tiny country of Slovenia in Central Europe. There are only 2 million people in Slovenia and the land area is just about the size of Wales.

Having been persecuted for believing, Christians are very aware of the new freedom to worship that they now enjoy.

There are people here in Adelaide who have migrated from Slovenia and the State Committee for WDP is hoping to have some of them attending services and playing an active part.

CANS in the VAN Our Hope-Mobile has made its first delivery of the Christmas season, with the delivery of 26 boxes of food to the Magdalene Centre over the weekend.

The donation was thanks to the St Alban’s Largs Bay Church community, who held their ‘Cans in the Van’ event last Saturday.

They gathered food donations from their local community, reaching out to schools, other church communities and residents who generously donated 26 boxes of non-perishable food. The Church community provided a warm welcome and hospitality with a sausage sizzle and morning tea.

The city service in 2019 will be held in our beautiful St Peter’s Cathedral at 10am on Friday 1 March. This will be followed by fellowship and morning tea in the Cynthia Poulton hall.

There are fifteen city churches in Adelaide. Uniting together by attending a service shows that “Church” doesn’t mean a building but a community of followers of Christ. South Aussies could take the opportunity of coming inside the Cathedral, so often praised from the outside during sporting events.

St. Peter’s will celebrate 150 years of worship in 2019, so please join us for a world-wide prayer event.

AnglicareSA made all the difference to this event actually happening. In partnership we were encouraged to have a go, and that together we could advertise, collect and distribute.

“Working together in these three ways meant that people in the parish experience tangible help that encouraged us and meant alignment of strengths. For example, while we could gather the food, it’s not our strength to distribute.

“Partnership also meant that when Jill Rivers came to church to discuss the event, there was experienced input as

to how we might manage and run the event-which was reassuring for us!”

From Anglican Communion News Service The first parish “church from scratch” to be built in the New Zealand Diocese of Christchurch in 40 years will be consecrated early next year. The congregation at the All Souls’ Anglican Church complex began using their new building with services around the feast of All Souls in early November. Earlier this month they held a weekend of “festival worship and community-facing family fun”. It is the second Anglican Church to be built from scratch following the 2011 earthquakes – the first being the Transitional Cathedral which opened in 2013. It is the first Parish Church new-build.

The Bishop-elect of Christchurch, Dr Peter Carrell, dedicated the church on Saturday 3 November. He will return to the church early in 2019 with Archbishop Philip Richardson, who will consecrate the building.

Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, invited the two communities to re-imagine a future together.

The Vicar of St Albans, Megan HerlesMooar, hailed the beginning of worship in the new buildings as a milestone which signalled hope and renewal for the whole community. “Some who were heartbroken at the earthquake losses – including of their beloved church buildings – have already found healing coming into this new space.” she said.

The new complex houses treasures saved from the two former church buildings which are incorporated into the new design, such as the stained

glass windows that now hold pride of place in a conical glass tower that forms the entrance chapel at All Souls.

The name All Souls recalls all those who have died in the earthquakes, but Herles-Mooar said that it also expressed hope for who this church will be for others. “We wanted this to be a place where ‘all souls’ will feel welcome to come to the table, no matter who they are, or where they come from,” She said.

One recent visitor to the church expressed his surprise at the beauty of the modern building’s interior, which was designed by architects Warren and Mahoney in consultation with the parish.

“What I found when I came into the building was radically unexpected,” he wrote in an email to the vicar.

“The space is strongly successful and joyously holy. I wonder what prayer or spiritual yearning has occurred to create such an atmosphere?”

Dr Carrell said that the Parish had been worshipping in halls, other churches, school buildings and marquees as they waited for their own worship home.

“Looking forward to this new building has kept the Parish highly motivated, and the final result is impressive,” he said, as he praised the Parish for having already begun using their new buildings to reach out and meet the needs of the communities they serve.

The Merivale St Albans Parish was formed after two Anglican communities – St Matthew’s in St Albans and St Mary’s Merivale – joined forces in 2014. After the 2011 earthquakes, St Matthew’s Church faced extensive damage and a huge repair bill, while St Mary’s Church community in Merivale came to realise their 1926 stone church was unsalvageable and would have to be demolished. Scholarship Established to

Celebrate Historic Occasion

by Peter March The Anglicare SA 150 Augustus Short Scholarship has been established in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the St Peter’s Cathedral and the Right Reverend Dr Augustus Short, the first Anglican bishop in South Australia and a pioneer in the founding of the University of Adelaide.

It will run in addition to The Augustus Short Scholarship, which has been in place for some time, having been awarded to almost 50 students attending the University of Adelaide throughout the years.

As well as celebrating the Cathedral’s 150th year, the addition of Anglicare SA 150 Augustus Short Scholarship in 2019 will promote and refresh the important historical relationship that exists between the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide and University of Adelaide.

It’s also a strengthening of the partnership between Adelaide Anglicans (including Anglicare SA) and the University of Adelaide, in their combined mission of assisting people less able to access further study. As Bishop Short once expressed, education, would increase opportunities and outcomes for any person, “I now more fully realised than ever before the great advantage offered by the royal foundation of St Peter’s College, Westminster, to the sons of professional men who have to make their own way in the world. By successful personal competition when ‘standing out’ for college, I had gained the first rung of the ladder of life.”

Archdeacon Emeritus, The Venerable Michael Whiting an expert on Bishop Short has previously described Short’s passion for education, “Augustus Short was a lifelong enthusiast for education. His personal good fortune was to realise the opportunities and

the impact that education made on his life’s possibilities. He believed in the fellowship of education, at every level.

He owed all his success in life to the two scholarships he obtained at school and at university.”

“Events” will take place across 2019 around the scholarship providing opportunity for the Diocese and Anglicare to get to know the successful student, linking them in with opportunities across the various networks.

This is all linking in with Christ Church, Oxford (Bishop Short’s alma mater), with the ambition to enable the student to visit Christ Church’s Dean.

Applications for the Anglicare SA 150 Augustus Short Scholarship open at 9AM Monday 14 January 2019 and close 5PM Friday 1 March 2019. The scholarship is available to undergraduate students across all faculties at the University of Adelaide, providing the successful applicant with $6,500 per year for up to 4 years.

Film Review:

Mary Poppins Returns Practically perfect in every way To imagine Mary Poppins as anyone else besides Julie Andrews in the 1964 Disney classic will be a stretch for multiple generations. Making it hard to remember that she was a beloved literary character from the P.L. Travers book series before she was brought to the big screen and eventually to the Broadway stage. The battle to get the strong-willed nanny to the screen was depicted in the Tom Hanks / Emma Thompson film Saving Mr. Banks in 2013. To look back over 80 years since her introduction to the world, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) is being reintroduced by flying back into the lives of the Banks family and into audiences imaginations again.

Over two decades since she blew out of the lives of Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer), living in the family home has gone from a place of joy to a one of sorrow. During the financially challenging times of the 1930s, Michael has recently lost his wife to illness and is left to raise his three children with the limited assistance of his sister and their housekeeper, Ellen (Julie Walters). While dealing with the difficulties of home ownership and raising a young family, lawyers from the bank show up at the door to give notice on the family’s potential eviction because of Micheal defaulting on his home loan.

While the Banks children consider what they can do to help their father as he tries to find a means of saving

their home, Mary Poppins floats into their lives. The mysterious, but familiar nanny reintroduces herself to the family and wants to help them in their most significant time of need. With the help of the local street lamplighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), the children travel on fantastic adventures that mirror or compliment the reallife journey of their father and his sister. The family strives to find a stock certificate that could be the answer to their financial difficulties and it becomes a race against the clock to save their home and family.

For those fans of the original film and the classic children’s stories, director Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) has done his best to provide a fresh perspective on this familiar tale while allowing enough of the nostalgic to bring audiences along on this new adventure at 17 Cherry Tree Lane, London. By including elements of the original story make this an honourable nod to the past, but David Magee’s screenplay delivers the newer twists to the Banks’ story to offer a potentially classic film to this generation.

To anyone who was concerned about the quality of performances by Blunt and Miranda in comparison to Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, there is no need for concern. Both leads manage to make this project their own and deliver magical performances that will please the die-hard fan and may win over anyone who is less enchanted

To all of the families who can sing the lyrics to supercalifragilisticexpialidocious to those who are just being introduced to Mary Poppins, this is one of the best options for the Christmas season. There is very little to complain about with this film, except for the length which may make this a difficult choice for young children. Otherwise, Mary Poppins Returns is the film for everyone who is looking for an inspirational experience that is practically perfect in every way.

What should I know as a parent before going to Mary Poppins Returns?

To all parents, it would be a travesty for you to miss out on this captivating adventure with your children. Beyond the music, comedic aspects and charming characters, this is a tale that shows the real value of family, community and faith. In our society where we tend to be more lost in our social media and video games, Mary Poppins Returns reinvigorates the message of the second commandment of Jesus.

You shall love your neighbour as yourself. - Matthew 22:39 and the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

by musicals. Their acting, singing and dancing are just the right combinations to carry the film, but then to be surrounded by fantastic talent who manage to rival their characters. Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth are great additions to the cast, with a special acknowledgement to Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson as the Banks children round out the cast beautifully.
