Since moving into Bishops Court five months ago, we have become aware of a number of “features” of the house. A particular feature is the nine men and one woman who are our companions in residence. These people I am referring to are all the previous Bishops and Archbishops of the Diocese, represented in portraits that currently adorn the walls of the entry foyer and main stairway.

Amongst all the men, there is a painting of a lone women, whose portrait radiates a lovely balance of humility and selfassuredness. There is a name plaque on the frame of the painting identifying her as Baroness Angela-Burdett Coutts. Research revealed that she was the granddaughter of Thomas Coutts, founder of the famous London Bank, Coutts Bank. She was left a significant inheritance that made her one of the wealthiest women in London known for her management of the bank and largess in philanthropy. She generously gave of her time and financial resources over many years to support numerous causes in England, helping prostitutes, woman and girls, the poor and the disadvantaged, providing housing and education and giving to humanitarian causes overseas.

But why is her portrait in Bishops Court?

In addition to her social welfare work she founded churches, church schools and endowed the Bishoprics of Cape Town,

British Columbia and Adelaide (1847). In 1871 she was made a peeress in her own right and when she died was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Angela had a genuine faith and was a lay rector. She was known not to store up for herself treasure where moth and rust can destroy, instead she was aware of her Christian responsibility to be a good steward of with what she had been endowed.

As I reflected on what I had learned of her life and story, I was encouraged that she wasn’t seduced by her vast inherited wealth, she stood out as a “tall poppy in philanthropy” amongst the well to do of her day. She cared for others, living what she believed, agitating for social reform, honoring God without fuss and fanfare.

Entering Bishops Court you could be forgiven for just noticing the ever present assembled clergy on the walls, but for me now, the inspiring light amongst the portraits, is Baroness Angela Burdett Coutts - a woman of faith and action without whom Adelaide would be a very different diocese.

Paul declared the core of Christianity in a sentence:

‘For there is one God and one mediator between God and humankind, the man Christ Jesus...’ 1 Timothy 2:5 The One and only true God in this world and universe, between God and human flesh has one mediator who is Jesus Christ. He who became flesh was born into the world, died on the cross to save the world, descended to the dead and conquered death. He is our Savior.

difficult. Personally I think this is due to the church lack of eschatological perspective; people do not feel of their spiritual needs. We indulge, enjoying the convenience of immediate technology and comfort- while lacking awareness of ultimate concerns.

I was called to spread this good news.

Therefore, gospel work in the church is at a long ‘bottle neck’ at the moment.

To break through this difficulty requires the work of the Holy Spirit- because it is only the Holy Spirit who can awaken and change people. ‘When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment...’ (John 16:8). Repentance must come first from the church, ‘Because the time has come, for judgment to begin at the house of God...’ (1 Peter 4:17). From my point of view, it requires specific, serious discussion and practical action from church leaders.

I did not come from an Anglican background. I joined the church since I was an infant and participated in the various ministries of the church when I was a youth. After completing a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1982 in Hong Kong, I served in my mother church for three years but quit my ministry because of family needs. In 1992, our family moved to Australia. In the role of a pastor’s wife, I supported my husband’s ministry for 16 years. In 2008, God opened a door to let me have my own ministry. In 2011 I joined the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide.

I had bowel cancer in 2014. And due to health needs, I have decided to pursue early retirement from my current work at Unley Parish, effective from December 1, 2017.

It has been a wonderful period over the past six years as I have served in Anglican Diocese of Adelaide.

The Chinese congregation of Unley Parish is the first fruit of Chinese ministry of Anglican Diocese of Adelaide and I had the privilege to participate in it. Despite many years of pastoral experience, I found that this ministry work has become increasingly

Before priesthood, I was being required to study courses to get to know more about the Anglican Church and participate in Formation Class. We reviewed church history, recognizing the Anglican Church’s long, rich and deep spiritual inheritance. That which God entrusted to the Church- is still faced with many threats and challenges, making the road to development a long uphill one. Now with the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, thanks be to God for the preservation of the Church. May the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide live, and strive for the kingdom of heaven, fighting the good fight for the Gospel! I shall never cease to pray for you, the Church.

Before Joh and her husband, the Reverend Brad Henley, made the move over to Kangaroo Island (KI) as Bush Church Aid (BCA) workers, she held a stable government job, “before we moved here I was working for Child Protection and The Women’s & Children’s (Hospital), as a psychologist.”

But the move to KI forced her to seek new avenues of employment, “When we first moved here I was looking for any government work… but being such a small community, there’s no government work for Psychologists, so I ended up starting my private practice.”

Most of the health issues Joh is faced with on KI are the same as those she had dealt with on the mainland, though life in a rural community presents a different set of challenges, “Some of them are really similar to what you see everywhere; anxiety, depression, PTSD, but with more of that rural/ isolated factor – farming issues. There’s less access to services over here, so it makes it harder to refer people onto other things that they might need, and quite a few families on the island who have children on the autism spectrum – so that’s an area of need that I became quickly aware of and have had extra training for that over the last couple of years, so I can meet that gap.”

Joh, who previously worshipped at St Matthew’s Kensington, also draws strength from her faith as a way of dealing with some of the burdens of life in a tightknit community, “My faith helps me a lot as a practitioner, as it gives me an ability to offload the things that I’m hearing and working with, to God, who I know cares for those people more than I do, and that helps me to manage that stress. And it’s been interesting working on the island with that faith perspective, people know my husband is the local minister, so people often bring up issues of faith, and I can try to help them with that.

“Community is very important in that we all know each other and there is a strong sense of community spirit. It affects my work a lot in that everyone knows each other, and everywhere you go you see the same people, so as a psychologist I have to be careful of boundaries and trying to manage that. We go to the shops and bump into people, including clients and parishioners, and that causes us to be careful of how we manage family time.”

“When we arrived on The Island I had a six-week-old baby. That was a bit hard because I was used to being in a church where there were six or seven others in similar situations and meals rosters and that kind of stuff. On the flip side, it was a really great stage for settling into a rural community because there’s lots of kinder gym and play group for example.

So, you end up seeing the same mums three or so times a week. So it was a great way of building relationships. And it’s been a really nice environment to bring up our kids. They see the same people at different events and that helps them to feel safe. And it’s just a beautiful place.”

“It wasn’t what I had planned on doing so early in my career but it has been really good for family life and work/life balance, which was very much a “God thing”, Him giving me the courage to do that and take that path – it’s been good.”

Business & Breaking the TABOO

by Peter March TABOO’s journey began in January 2016 as Eloise Hall and Izzy Marshall walked up the stairs of Manly Beach, Sydney, “We had recently taken part in a leadership conference held at Bond University, and had been inspired by various professionals and their work, particularly that of Daniel Flynn.” Daniel is the co-founder of Thankyou Water, a social enterprise designed to sell bottles of water in developed countries, to make a profit that is donated to water projects in developing parts of the world.

“On our walk home, we began brainstorming other products that are in high demand in Australia, so that these products could also be sold to generate profit for a related cause.

Eventually, we came to pads and tampons! 50% of the population require these products and each individual woman spends $19,000 on these products throughout their lifetime.

What an awesome market!”

“According to dignityperiod.org, ‘73 percent of interviewed Bangladeshi garment workers reported they miss work for an average of six days per month (resulting in unpaid work days) due to vaginal infections caused by unsanitary menstrual materials’. There are many more shocking statistics around this topic, so if the subject impacts you, please further inform yourself about this tragic reality.”

As the girls’ research deepened, they were alarmed by what they discovered, “We then started researching the flip side; What do women in developing countries use when they are menstruating? To say the least, we were shocked with the answer. We learnt that an astounding number of women had never even heard of a pad, let alone used them. Women are forced to use kitchen sponges, tree bark or even cow dung during their period. Many girls must leave school for a week every month, which leads to approximately 30% of girls in developing parts of the world dropping out of school as soon they hit puberty.”

“We had to put our curiosity on hold for a year, as we focused our energy on year 12 studies. Almost the day after finishing our exams though, we were back to brainstorming ways that would change those scary statistics that had been on our mind all year.”

“At this pivotal point, TABOO entered our lives. We developed a social enterprise model that would allow us to sell a range of sanitary products on this website to generate profit that would then be dedicated to providing sanitary products and menstrual health education in developing countries.”

“At the beginning of 2017, we were fortunately introduced to a not-forprofit event called Startup Weekend. We met a brilliant team of professionals and were provided with the resources to evolve our dream into something real.

The support, encouragement and prizes we received from that weekend gave us a determination to pursue our idea further, and so we decided to defer our uni courses for a year to commit our time fully to TABOO.” In July, TABOO held a fundraiser at the General Havelock Hotel in Adelaide in order to help secure the funds to reach their goal of placing their first order of TABOO branded sanitary product by the start of 2018, “The Red & Pink fundraiser at The Havelock Hotel was incredible!

We weren’t sure how much financial support we would receive, and were absolutely stoked to learn that we had raised over seven thousand dollars. The fundraiser was really important for us to also convey TABOO’s mission, values and goals to the 150 people there.

TABOO was well promoted throughout the night and it was an amazing

opportunity for us to launch this season of fundraising! Amongst many other groups, The Havelock hotel and The Adelaide Set were especially generous to us over this night and we are so grateful for their support.”

And backing for the project seems to be gaining momentum both locally and further abroad. “The support that TABOO has received has quite literally blown us away! It is honestly so amazing to drive through the street and notice TABOO stickers stuck on the windows of cars and on the backs of so many phone cases! When we made a social media post promoting the fact that we were sending off stickers to followers who wanted them, we received an amazing number of messages from people all over the country - even overseas! We have just launched an ambassador’s program, which is designed to empower our followers to host their own fundraisers for TABOO, and already we are in contact with a number of amazing and passionate young women who are planning their own fundraisers in their communities.

“From a practical and advisory perspective, we have been so blessed by the number of generous professionals who have been willing to share their skills, wisdom, guidance and experience

with us. We have developed some amazing relationships with these mentors and they have played crucial roles in helping us make decisions and keeping us on track.”

“Because TABOO strives to be a movement as well as a brand, we would say that the number of positive responses and passionate encouragement that we have received from people all over the country has probably been our most exciting success so far! Being given the opportunity to take part in, and win a competition called StartUp Weekend definitely showed us the huge potential for social impact that our brand could have. As well as providing us with experienced mentors, workspace facilities and practical support, winning this competition really encouraged us to take the idea more seriously and acknowledge how many people were willing to back it up and support us!

The greatest challenge for both of us has been learning how to manage all the complexities of a start up business, while on the job! We are both quite young and definitely not as experienced as a lot of others in the start up space, so we are most definitely relying on our strong passion for the cause to drive our success.

“Trying to start conversation and earn respect from suppliers and manufacturers has been an interesting experience. Considering our age and the age of TABOO as a company, it is very easy for large companies to assume that TABOO isn’t committed for the long haul. It has taken a lot of persistence to gain this respect from larger companies but that is all a part of the journey.”

“Our passion for the outreach most definitely comes from our Christian based values. Jesus’ teachings make it clear that every person is extremely valuable and deserving of love and community. Jesus loved people by serving them and constantly reminding them of their worth and unique beauty.

We want to serve these women in a practical and sustainable way that will see them empowered and prepared to look after themselves and the people around them. Above all, we believe that every woman deserves to feel ‘clothed in strength and dignity (and able to) laugh without fear of the future’ Proverbs 31:25.

“Our passion for the ‘business’ end of the social enterprise primarily comes from knowing how our profits would be able to support women in Developing Countries. The fact that so many people vocally express their excitement for TABOO’s mission is super encouraging to us, and definitely gives us the enthusiasm to keep going.”

Time To Confront The ‘Doctrine of Discovery’ Bishop Mark MacDonald, the National Indigenous Bishop of the Anglican Church of Canada spoke about the Reconciliation journey of the Canadian Church during his recent Australian visit.

During a forum in Adelaide, Bishop Mark was asked to nominate the ‘blind spots’ of the Australian Church in relation to reconciliation. He spoke of the experience of Canadian Anglicans in unveiling and seeking to repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery.

The Doctrine of Discovery describes a habitual way of thinking that continues to marginalise, dehumanise and downgrade Indigenous people,” said Bishop Mark.

“At the heart of the doctrine is the idea that Indigenous people are a primitive form of human life who are therefore discoverable. This hidden assumption causes us to look at Indigenous people as people who need to be updated.

Who need to be westernised or civilised in order to have any sort of happy life.

It doesn’t look at Indigenous people as people of a distinct and worthwhile cultural. It doesn’t value their gifts and talents and ideas.”

According to Bishop Mark, the Doctrine of Discovery is at the heart of the mistreatment of Indigenous people that is historical and ongoing. Bishop Mark visited Australia at the invitation of National Aboriginal Bishop, Chris McLeod and the Anglican Board of Mission (ABM).

He was a keynote speaker at the Melbourne Diocesan Ministry Conference where he spoke on Incarnation, Indigenous Life and God’s Mission. Pointing to the growth of Indigenous churches, Bishop Mark suggested that the Western church has much to learn from Indigenous wisdom - especially when facing the task of incarnating and inculturating the Gospel for younger generations.

From Melbourne, Bishop Mark headed to Central Australia where he joined Bishop Chris McLeod and a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican leaders for retreat. The group spent time in prayer, story-telling, sitting together in country and prophetic imagining about the future of the church. Canada and Australia both share a sad history of placing indigenous children into institutions.

The group visited the Bungalow (now the Telegraph Station) where many Aboriginal kids grew up. They also spent an evening with Rev’d Brian Jeffries and the former residents of St Mary’s, an Aboriginal children’s home, which was once supported by ABM. The retreat ended in an evening around the campfire with local Arrente elders and other Alice Springs residents, sharing stories of land and spirit. It was a fitting end to a very moving time characterised by shared grief and laughter, and a marked spirit of unity in diversity.

Cathedral Again Plays Host to Art Prize St Peter’s Cathedral will be transformed into a stunning art gallery from 13 to 21 October for the Cathedral Art Prize and Exhibition – one of the largest community art shows in Adelaide.

This year’s Exhibition will feature work from well-known Adelaide artists, as well as work from young and emerging local artists.

Prizes will be awarded to the best artwork in a number of categories, including Best Portrait, Best Still Life, Best Abstract Expression, and Best Social Comment.

Visitors to the show will also have the opportunity to choose their favourite painting, with the People’s Choice Award to be presented at the end of the week.

The Exhibition is not only a means of opening the Cathedral to the broader

community, but is also a means of providing assistance to those in need by supporting a charitable program.

Proceeds from this year’s event will support an Anglican Board of Mission training and leadership development program for Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders in disadvantaged remote communities.

This program enables approximately 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to undertake leadership development training, and then return home equipped with the skills and abilities to improve and develop their communities.

The Exhibition will open on Friday 13 October with an Opening Night Gala, which provides guests with the first opportunity to view and buy artwork, and enjoy drinks, canapés and jazz in the beautiful surrounds of the Cathedral. 125 Years Of

Mothers’ Union Mothers’ Union in Australia is celebrating 125 years in 2017 after the first recorded branch meeting was held at Cullenswood in Tasmania in 1892.

In September there was a great celebration in Launceston with members from all over Australia attending as well as World Wide President, Mrs Lynne Tembey.

Mrs Dorothy Harmer, v of Bishop John Reginald Harmer, instigated the first MU meeting in Adelaide in late 1895 and today there are 18 groups and 275 members across the diocese.

Mothers’ Union maintains a world-wide fellowship united in prayer, worship and service. In their daily prayer life they bring to God the special needs of society – world-wide, nationally and locally. They are currently prayerfully considering ways to support the Indigenous community in South Australia and they remember the students at St Barnabas College, while presenting new clergy a small gift at their Ordination.

To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children, Mothers’ Union current local fund raising activities include the St John’s Youth Services programme for young mothers and their dependent children. Members collect blankets, toiletries and household items for the Quickest Warmth programme which are distributed, via Anglicare and the Department for Child Protection in the Northern suburbs, to families experiencing difficulties. Items go as far as to the APY lands via Gawler Aboriginal Health.

Members attend the Helen Mayo House, which is part of the Women and Children’s hospital, and baby sit children whilst their mothers have treatment or have time for themselves.

Their ongoing support for Seeds of Affinity provides toiletries for women entering prison or on their release as they return to the community.

Mothers’ Union Overseas and Northern Outreach mission is for Developing Peace and Reconciliation strategies in conflict ravaged areas of Africa. They send financial support for training of Indigenous women in the Northern Territory and provide funds so that clergy spouses in remote areas can travel with the clergy to conferences etc. They also respond both financially and prayerfully to disasters that occur within Australia.

Every year on or around August 9, Mothers’ Union chapters celebrate founder Mary Sumner with a special celebration. This year in Adelaide there was a wonderful day at St Michael’s, Mitcham with a celebratory Eucharist followed after lunch by a talk on Schools Chaplaincy by the Reverend Dr Theo McCall.

Lady Day in March is always special when we celebrate the Annunciation and present scrolls and badges to members for long service. This year a 70 year badge and scroll was presented to Mrs Lesley Polmear who is a member of the Brighton branch.

It is to the delight of members to have the wife of the Governor of South Australia in attendace to present these awards and for the past few years Mrs Lan Le has been most gracious in her involvement with this.

This year’s theme is Faith in Action and our members continue to show this with their own faith and actions.-

Appeal to Support Newton College, PNG

by Bishop David McCall Newton College is the theological college of the Church in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and it is in urgent need of support. The College opened on its present site of 200 acres at Jonita, about 8 kilometres from Popondetta, in 1981. A rural site was chosen so that students could make their own gardens. It is an idyllic site, with about 25 cottage style buildings spread across a large area and surrounded by coconut palms. A beautiful semi-open-air chapel sits in the centre.

Beyond initial impressions, a closer look reveals a college that has had little refreshment since it was first located on that beautiful site. Most of the buildings are in some form of disrepair.

The water supply has failed and power generation is minimal and sometimes intermittent.

The library is the one building to have had significant refurbishment (thanks to the Anglican Church in New Zealand), but most of the books are pre-1980s.

The curriculum is out of date and some of the lecturers are struggling to complete their own primary qualifications. Finance from the Church of PNG and partner churches has been sporadic and inadequate. In some ways Newton College is past crisis point.

Bishop Jeffrey Driver (Adelaide’s former Archbishop) has been asked by the Church in PNG and ABM to

offer support to the college and will be spending three to four months at Newton for the next few years.

Bishop Jeffrey is deeply impressed with the commitment and the spirit of staff and students despite the serious lack of resources and money. He points out that, “If the Anglican Church is to have its place in the future of PNG then leaders with deep theological roots and a strong sense of their own cultural identity will be essential.

“Without Newton College, it is difficult to see how the Anglican Church of PNG can provide that sort of leadership.”

Bishop Jeffrey is one of very few people with the vision and energy to meet this challenge, “Gone are the days of a colonial style intervention. But friendship, partnership and prayerful support are of the Kingdom of God and

this is precisely what Newton needs now from its partners in Australia. And it needs that support desperately.”

He has organised materials for the renovation of the buildings, some tradesmen to do the work and a substantial donation of books for the library. The container will be ready to leave Adelaide in January.

Please pray for Newton College, commend its needs where you can, and if you are able, make this important but fragile community forming leaders for the Church in PNG part of your giving.” $10,000 is needed by mid-December to transport the building materials and the books to Popondetta. It is hoped that ABM supporters and others in South Australia will be able to ensure that the container leaves from Port Adelaide in January.

Pedare College Moves To

Consolidate Campuses Pedare College has announced that they will go ahead with its One College, One Campus initiative.

The college, which is run by both the Anglican and Uniting Churches in Adelaide, hopes the move will enable them to deliver the best educational outcomes identified during the school community consultation for Pedare’s Towards 2020 Strategic Plan.

From the beginning of 2019, a new Junior School will join the Middle and Senior Schools on a redeveloped One Campus.

The Principal of Pedare College, Mike Millard said of the move, “One Campus will strengthen and advance across all ages and year levels our Pedare culture of student growth, wellbeing and community belonging. The development of the Junior and Middle Schools will feature state-of-the-art learning spaces with flexible break-out zones and enhanced play environments not previously possible. One College will enhance the educational experience from Reception to Year 12 and open exciting possibilities for learning and growth.

“There will, for example, be unprecedented access for all students across all ages to modern and sophisticated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) facilities. Among the range of benefits

will be purpose-built learning spaces for the Junior School, our exciting STEMenabled building, strengthened and integrated International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and SACE Curriculum; integrated sport and music programs; well-being program; superior ‘buddy’ systems and a dedicated Pedare out-of-hours school-care service (OHSC).”

“All that we value at the Junior School will be brought to One Campus. This includes two playgrounds dedicated to the Junior School and a full size Blue Gum basketball court. Families also will benefit from a single drop-off and pick-up, a doubling in parent parking and improved traffic flow. Among the many steps in the creation of One College, One Campus is, of course, the necessary sale of the Junior School site with the approval of our College Board.”

The land currently occupied by the Junior School has been sold to Pinnacle College that has committed to lease it back to Pedare until the end of 2018. Like Pedare, Pinnacle College is a member of the Association of Independent Schools of SA. It is a non-denominational school that shares Pedare’s values of diversity, inclusion and tolerance.

Major Housing Transfer to Create More Affordable Housing for Adelaide’s West Creating safe, vibrant and engaged communities is at the centre of a recent government housing transfer to AnglicareSA in Woodville.

During September, Premier Jay Weatherill officially opened AnglicareSA’s new tenancy offices at Kilkenny, before the final management transition to AnglicareSA occurred on 23 September.

The Housing SA parcel, which includes 737 homes in the Woodville region, has been awarded to AnglicareSA by Renewal SA as a part of the Renewing Our Streets and Suburbs (ROSAS) housing transfer.

AnglicareSA CEO The Rev’d Peter Sandeman said that the transfer represented an opportunity to connect communities and provide a holistic approach to social housing services.

“Our services aren’t simply about providing housing but working with tenants to build a vibrant, sustainable community,” Peter said.

“Building on the success of our existing tenancies across Adelaide, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with local residents in the West.

“In addition to our tenancy service, we will support collective impact initiatives and connections to multiple services, including children’s programs, financial counselling and home care services for our tenants.

“We’re proud to provide quality, affordable housing within vibrant communities to South Australians on lower incomes.”

Premier Jay Weatherill said that working with recognised community housing providers, such as AnglicareSA, increased the availability of social and affordable housing in South Australia.

“Through our partnership with AnglicareSA, we can build a stronger support system for South Australians on lower incomes.

“With housing growth and renewal in existing suburbs, close to the services everyone needs, we are creating healthy, affordable and liveable neighbourhoods.”

The Anglican Diocese of Adelaide has announced that Ms Amanda Harfield will be the next Registrar and Secretary of Synod.

Amanda comes into the role with a wealth of experience in corporate governance, legislation and law.

Currently, Amanda is the Associate Director of the University of Adelaide’s in-house legal team. Amanda has qualifications in Science, Law, Business Administration and has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Directors Course.

Amanda is a member of St George’s, Magill and has served on the Diocesan Professional Standards Committee. Previously, Amanda has been a Parish Council member and Synod representative of St Martin’s, Campbelltown.

Amanda will begin her new role on 8 January, 2018. Synod members will have a chance to meet Amanda at this year’s session of Synod.

Please pray for Amanda as she prepares to join the senior leadership of the Diocese.

Silver for Guardian at ARPA Conference and Awards recent Australiasian Religious Press Association (ARPA) Conference and Awards held in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Award was well deserved recognition for the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide’s Graphic Designer, Alex Gatley, who has consistently created a beautifully designed quarterly publication since taking the reigns at the beginning of 2016.

The Award was presented at the Conference’s Gala Awards Dinner held at the Rydges hotel in the city’s CBD.

Its aims are to develop members’ skills, knowledge and professionalism; to offer opportunities for networking, fellowship and information-sharing among members; and to recognise excellence through the presentation of annual awards.

The 2016 Christmas Campaign was an initiative of Diocesan Office to engage parishes in a united Christmas message based on the passage of scripture, John 1: 5 “The lights shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”.

The campaign encouraged churches to make the most of the many evangelistic

opportunities available at Christmas time. This was done by employing a range of mediums to share the Good News of the birth of Christ, and to invite those in the community to Gospel driven Christmas events.

Following this success of the 2016 campaign, the Diocese will be driving another Christmas campaign, this year based on John 10:9-10 with a focus on 'flourishing' and 'life in abundance'.

As other committee members were also from interstate, Louise Sherman of Adelaide based Bible Society’s Remote & Indigenous Ministries, and I found ourselves with the considerable task and responsibility of bringing the book together.

OUR MOB, GOD’S STORY: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artists Share Their Faith, published in March as part of Bible Society Australia’s bicentenary celebrations, came about through the vision and generosity of the most joyful Christian I have ever met, Glenn Goodwin, in a town with an unenviable reputation for racism. When Glenn, an accountant, found he had been left a substantial bequest by a client, he prayed long and hard, seeking God’s guidance for its use.

Because Glenn had Aboriginal friends, Ellen Draper and Margy Adams, whose paintings he admired, he thought of producing a book of Aboriginal Christian art. After approaching various charities, in 2010 he decided to entrust the project to Bible Society Australia.

On 5 April 2012, a steering committee met at BSA Adelaide. Queensland artist Max Conlon, later co-opted to the committee, came up with the title and

Artists were asked to submit paintings based on Bible verses significant to them and to give free use of their work while retaining copyright. All proceeds from the publication were to go to Bible translation into Aboriginal languages, as many groups still have no Scriptures in their mother tongues.

Through personal contacts and contacts with community art centres across Australia, we gradually accumulated over 300 images.

Originally, we had hoped to publish 100 works by 100 artists, but had to revise our expectations, instead using 115 works from 67 artists, in some cases 2 or 3 by one artist, because they were too good to omit.

Jordy Davidson and young Njarrindjeri Jordan Lovegrove of Dreamtime Design submitted several versions and eventually used the beautiful concept of linking the artist’s name with a

colour from their painting. Different fonts were used to distinguish artist statements from editorial text, other information and Bible verses relating to the works. The cover was designed

by Safina Stewart who has roots in Torres Strait and Wuthathi Country in Queensland.

A number of artists from across South Australia feature in the book: Kunyi McInerney, Nelson Varcoe, Greg Sinclair, Susan Betts, Bronwyn Coleman-Sleep, Verna Lawrie, Nancy Lawrie, Yvonne Tjintiwara Edwards, Tricia Carter, Makinti Minatjukur, Waniwa Lester, Katie Curley, Imiyari (Yilpi) Adamson, the late Hector Tjupuru Burton, Amari Tjalkuri, Deborah Burton, Katrina Tjitayi, Rupert Jack, Katatjuku Mary Pan, Mrs Riley, Nyurpaya Kaika, Nurina Burton, Katanari Tjilya, and Inawantji Scales.

Our Mob, God’s Story, endorsed by 15 prominent Australians, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, has received very positive reviews and in August received Sparklit’s Australian Christian Book of the Year Award. It is about to go into its 4th printing, bringing the total to 11000 in 7 months. Priced very reasonably at $49.99 for 240 full colour pages in hard cover, it is a book to treasure and share. Many people are using it for daily meditations.

“Words Not Bullets Must Resolve Our Problems” ACNS The South Sudan Council of Churches has issued a statement reflecting on the violent conflict that continues to plague the nation. The statement came at the end of a three-day meeting in Lusaka, Zambia.

“Death, displacement, hunger and impoverishment have brought our people to their knees, and they are deeply tired of this unbearable situation,” the statement says. “The parties to the conflicts appear no closer to a resolution, despite frameworks and signed agreements, risking total destruction of our beautiful land.”

The South Sudan Council of Churches defined a collective moral responsibility

to stop the violence and prevent the misuse of power and arms. “The war must end! National interests and the interests of the people in South Sudan must be put first, arms must be laid down and those within and around South Sudan who support violence must stop fanning the flames.”

Film Review:

The LEGO Ninjago Movie A LEGO film that is by the numbers and only for Ninjago fans - 2 stars

LEGO has been part of the lives of children since since 1958. As was shown in the original LEGO movie, some people are free-flowing builders while others are insistent on following the instructions that come in the box. This freedom is the beauty of the toy bricks out of Denmark; they satisfy various creative methods and personalities. This concept was an underlying theme of the Warner Brothers Animation team, but with the release of their third bigbudget production have the creators maintained their originality or have they become a slave to a formula?

As a typical 16-year-old, Lloyd (Dave Franco) experiences all of the challenges of a teenager. An overly protective mother, the awkwardness of high school and he has a complicated relationship with his father. Being the only child of divorced parents is hard enough, but the real issue is that his dad is Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux), the tyrannical warlord who continually attempts to take over the city of Ninjago. As the enemy of this whole LEGO populace, his father has made things exceptionally difficult for Lloyd’s life.

Thankfully he has his circle of friends and his ninja mentor, Master Wu (Jackie Chan), who have all come together to protect the citizens of Ninjago from the multiple invasions by Garmadon. As

vigilante warriors, Lloyd and his band of fighters always manage to keep the upper hand, until one day when their enemy unwittingly finds their weakness.

This challenge leads to a quest to find the Ultimate, Ultimate Weapon that could finally bring an end to this tyrannical invader and all of Lloyd’s problems.

After only three feature films, the directing team for The LEGO Ninjago Movie must have received the ‘by the numbers’ instructions on how to deliver a film within this franchise. The formula involves a villain with a snarky attitude that wants to control the local LEGO community, a hero that has identity or daddy issues and a surprise twist that is added in for good measure. These elements worked well in The Lego Movie, but are reminiscent of the old building brick sets that sit on the shelf in a children’s playroom. Once the construction of these toys is complete, most of these creations are usually only suitable for display or for the bricks to be added to the ‘mix bucket.’

This film is primarily for fans of the Ninjago sets and graphic novels. There are whispers of the previous films that offer a few laughs and enough action for all of the primary school boys in the audience. The only element that provides originality, but a bit of frustration to this movie is the voice

work of Jackie Chan. He is funny, but without his signature stunt work to add to the film, his presence is more to pay homage to his extensive kung fu career than for lifting the quality of this production.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie offers a safe option for families with younger male fans, but it does not add too much to the LEGO film canon. The parents will appreciate the humour, but after awhile most of the jokes will seem familiar. The hope will be that for the next film they will throw out the ‘instructions sheet’, stick their hands into the ‘mix bucket’ and build something new and different within this builder’s world.

REEL DIALOGUE: What are some of the bigger questions to consider from this film?

Children are truly a blessing. It can be hard to remember this during the early morning feedings or the latest car smash, but these incidental things should not diminish the gift that they are in our lives.

Fathers need to look at this opportunity as an honour and do all that can be done to be the men our children need us to be. Somedays are harder than others, but thankfully the Bible gives us the instruction manual to help to mould our children and prayer provides the comfort to watch over them in all situations.

CMS Unveil New State Director CMS (the Church Missionary Society of Australia) have announced that The Rev’d Katy Smith will be the next Regional Director of the SA/ NT branch. Katy will begin her time in the role with the CMS Summer Encounter in January 2018.

Katy is currently the Lecturer in Old Testament and Director of Postgraduate Studies at Bible College of South Australia, a position she has held for the last 6 years. She has been an active and strong supporter of CMS and partners with a number of their Gospel Workers.

Her desire is to come alongside CMS Gospel Workers, the Board and the Branch members to see a flourishing branch with a sustainable future with a clear and articulated vision.

First Female Archbishop Elected in Australia ACNS The Right Revd Kay Goldsworthy has been elected Archbishop of Perth, the first woman to hold that office in the Anglican church in Australia. Kay Goldsworthy was consecrated as Australia’s first female bishop in 2008 and has served as Bishop of Gippsland, in Victoria, since 2015.

The Administrator of the Anglican Diocese of Perth, the Right Revd Kate Wilmot, welcomed the appointment, commending Bishop Kay’s commitment and significant experience: “Bishop Kay was one of the first women ordained to the priesthood in St George’s Cathedral in 1992 and has a wealth of diocesan, national and international experience, including being a long-standing member of

General Synod and a member of the International Anglican Consultative Council. The Archbishop-elect is well known in Perth and has displayed excellent leadership and hospitality across the Perth community. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Bishop Kay and her husband Jeri James back to the Perth community.”

Bishop Kay’s election follows an eightmonth selection process by the Church, in the wake of the departure of former Archbishop Roger Herft in December 2016. The installation will take place in St George’s Cathedral, Perth, in February 2018.
