Dear Freshmen Of 2020 otava korkka

To the freshmen of 2020, Welcome, and congratulations! It’s not every year you’re accepted to study English in the university of Turku! I’m totally not biased when I say that our department is amazing & you’ve made a great choice in coming here.

Starting your studies at a university, whether it’s your first time or not, will have its challenges, this Autumn perhaps even more so than typically. The first few weeks might feel a bit confusing and even overwhelming, since there are so many new people, so many new places, and sooo much new information. Honestly, the whole first year is a learning experience, so don’t worry if you feel like it’s a bit much at first. You’ll have an amazing group of fellow freshmen to share the year with, and some of them might even become lifelong friends for you!

Anglica is the student organization of English students, and while our most important task is to protect your interests when it comes to studies, we also arrange various kinds of events every week. If you are in need of help at any point of your studies, don’t hesitate to contact the board of Anglica. If the board can’t help you, they’ll at least know who can.

In this Rookie Guide you’ll find all kinds of useful information to help you get started with your time at university, and perhaps it’ll provide some entertainment as well. If you have a question that’s not answered in this guide, you can ask the tutors or the board for help – both are introduced on the later pages of this guide. I warmly recommend you keep your guide with you during the first few weeks; you never know when you’ll need someone to sign your pilttipassi, for example.

Tips for a Rookie Your tutors will probably tell you everything you need to know, but here are some handy tips for starting your uni studies: - First of all, get a student card ASAP! You can also use the Frank app. You need the card/app for those student discounts. (Also important when doing exams, etc.)

- If you need help with your English studies, contact your Academic Advisor or our Student Services Secretary Emmi Saari (emmasa@utu.fi or visit her in Rosetta during office hours). You can also send an e-mail to english@utu.fi, and your e-mail will be forwarded to the staff member who can help you.

- Other, more general enquiries considering studies can be directed to the Student Advisor of the Faculty of Humanities, Mauri Paloheimo (mailpa@utu.fi). If you’re, for example, wondering whether some of your previous studies compensate for something, Mauri can help you.

- If you get sick, contact YTHS. YTHS provides students with all kinds of health services, such as general, mental and oral health services.

- Disability Coordinator Paula Pietilä (esteet@utu.fi) will help you if you have any physical, mental or social hindrances. University of Turku wants to give everyone equal possibilities to participate.

Starting your studies, you’re probably filled with questions. Where in the campus area is Publicum located, what’s the best student cafeteria, how to sign up for exams etc. Information can be found in many places, but the easiest way is to ask your tutor! The tutors are here to help you in any way they can, and you can rely on them in guiding you through the first weeks. Here’s a closer look at the tutors of this year!

1. My name is Essi Risikko and I’m 21 years old. I was born in Helsinki but have lived most of my life in Kerava. I’m here studying English because I’ve always been interested in languages and wanted to learn about the English language on a deeper level. And I’m here as a tutor because I want to get to know new Anglicans and share any knowledge I’ve acquired about university life during these 2 years!

2. You don’t need to get a 5, 4 or even a 3 from every single exam, so do not stress about them too much. Go to many events even if you’re not sure if it’s your thing, you’ll never know if you don’t try!

3. It’s hard to choose one absolute favorite movie, but I’d say Parasite is one of my favorites. I think it was very well made and a perfect mixture of thriller, drama and dark comedy.

1. My name is Astrid, I am 24 years old and I was born in Turku and have lived here most of my life. Not sure if “why are you here” means why am I in this Universe or why am I here, studying English, or something completely different. Anyways, my answer is that the reason for my existence is unknown, but the reason why I chose to study English is that being a translator is the only thing I ever pictured myself doing as an adult.

2. Don’t leave all the studying for the night before the exam, but if you do and it just so happens that you don’t pass the exam, remember that there will be retakes! So, don’t stress too much.

3. My absolute favourite film genre is horror and choosing only one favourite turned out to be reeeally tough. Hereditary has been my favourite one so far, mostly because of its very disturbingly surprising scenes.

1. My name is Jaana, I am 23 years old and I come from Varkaus, also known as ”Sure, I’ve Driven Past The Place”. I am here because everyone needs a personal air horn in their lives. You know, because I’m loud.

Like an air horn. Oh and I’m also here to crack awful jokes.

2. Don’t be afraid to get a bit silly. There will always be someone who doesn’t agree with you, but don’t ever let that hold you back.

3. I would say Trainspotting. It is so difficult to watch but I love the rough, realistic and unromanticized execution of the characters.

Wowzers!

1. Hello! My name is Eva-Lydia. I’m a 22 year old English major student from Turku, and originally I come from a small town in Satakunta. I applied to university to study languages honestly because I didn’t know - and still don’t know- what I wanted to do when I grow up, and languages just seemed like a good option.

2. My advice for you is to just be yourselves, participate in the activities that Anglica organizes - if you want to - and get to know new people! Regarding studies, just do your best and choose those minor subjects that feels right to you!

3. At the moment I’ve been loving the good old Harry Potter movies. The nostalgia is just the best. Some of my other all time favourite movies that I can recall are for example Little Women and Dirty Dancing. And oh! I love musicals, too!

1. My name is Matti Ollila and I originally hail from the glorious municipality of Haukipudas but I tell people that I’m from Oulu because that’s just easier. I am 23 years old. I’m here due to a series of (un)fortunate events.

2. Do what you want to do. Be open to new experiences. Don’t burn out. It’s going to be fine.

3.Intouchables. Great movie about friendship. It’s funny, sad and beautiful. And the music is by my favorite composer Ludovico Einaudi. Watch the French version, not the knock-offs.

1. My name is Mikael Rantanen but everyone calls me Micke so maybe you should too.

I’ve been born and raised in Raisio, which is basically to Turku what NYC is to new jersey... Anyhow I came here because I’ve always been interested in language and performed well in English in school.

2. Be curious, be wild, do things.

3. My favorite movie is probably Reservoir Dogs by Quentin Tarantino. While the film mostly takes place in one location, the storyline is well constructed and the cinematography is excellent. Also Steve Buschemi is great in his role.

1. My name is Bea, but you can call me any time ’cause I’m your tutor and happy to help with anything! I’m 23 years old and I was born in Helsinki. I’m here to meet amazing people, to make memories and maybe to study a bit on the side, too.

2. My tip for you is to try to keep an open mind and remember that finding your favorite people, events and places might take some time. The more you see the more you know!

3. Definitely Love Actually because of Hugh Grant’s dance debut. Need I say more? (also, I’m a bit of a softie).

1. Salli, 23, Helsinki and I’m here because it’d be boring to live in the same city your whole life!

2. Don’t worry too much! Everything will sort itself out eventually. Uni stuff is confusing but it’ll come around and we are here to help with all things!

3. Pulp Fiction! I was 14 when I watched it for the first time and it was the film that made me appreciate cinematography in a new way.

I was also obsessed with it in high school, so there’s a lot of nostalgia involved too.

1. Hello everyone! My name is Pihla and I’m Tampere born and raised. I’m here to have a good time and vibe. Live love laugh and so on.

2. Take full advantage of student discounts, such as CampusSport gyms, Spotify Premium and university restaurants. Whenever you see an overall patch you really like, treat yo self! Also, get Anglica’s Songbook as soon as you can so you can enjoy sitz parties to the fullest. Learn the words to Toto’s Africa. Be curious, ask questions!

3. Howl’s Moving Castle, because I have excellent taste. As if I could only say one, I also love Clueless.

1. My name is Otava, I’m 22 years old, and I’m from Lahti, though I’ve lived in Turku for four years now and much prefer this city.

I’m here because I wanted to get out of Lahti.

1. Viljo Linjama, 21, Turku. I am here for reasons not entirely clear even to myself.

2. I’ve only ever been a freshman once so I don’t know if mine is the best course of action, but basically what I did was Attend All the Events. Also remember there might be dumb questions but if there is ever a time to ask them it is during your first year, so please ask about anything you might be unsure of, we won’t judge.

3. Ratatouille (2007, Brad Bird). I have no idea why.

1. I’m Saara, 21 years young and I come from the notorious streets of Salo. I came here to study and to have a jolly good time.

2. Don’t hate, participate! Really try to take all the new experiences in and try everything at least once (except folk dances).

1. Hi, I’m Emma Lehtinen, I am 21 years old and come from the small town of Rauma!

I have no idea why I’m here, but I’m not complaining!

2. Just try to live your best life and enjoy the freshmen year to it’s fullest! Sooner or later, it’s over and you’re already in third year and getting your bachelor’s thesis done!

3. My favourite movie propably is Spirited Away, as I love hand drwan animation.

Though I have been obsessed with Hamilton recently.

1. My name is Tiia , I’m currently twenty years old and I come from Eura. I am here because my mom and dad loved each other very much and one day a stork dropped me through the chimney. In all seriousness though, I love languages and people and I have managed to find my Tiia-shaped nook here in Anglica. I can’t wait to help you to find yours!

2. I know it feels a bit intimidating to be on your own, perhaps in a new city, surrounded by all these new people. But be brave, participate in activities even if it feels scary, get to know new people and ENJOY! Also, enjoy every moment because studying English with lovely Anglicans is simply wonderful.

3. I would probably say Lord of the Rings trilogy. The films remind me that one does not need be strong, tall, or even in one whole piece to be the hero of the story.

Greetings from the department & staff Dear first-year students, Welcome to the Department of English!

This is the time to embark on a new scholarly quest: to learn about English, about the world, and, perhaps, about yourself. Embrace the opportunity to consider familiar things from different angles and to gain new theoretical and practical skills. Things you thought you knew might prove to be more complex, but you might also find that you are brilliant at something you have never tried before. Strive to work throughout the year, not just before the exam season. Schedule your work and meet deadlines. Attend lectures, ask questions, discuss things that are interesting or difficult or unexpected. Be an intrepid seeker of knowledge.

In the beginning of a new quest, not knowing everything is absolutely fine. Studying English at the university is rather different from studying English at school, and the first few weeks may feel overwhelming. However, by the end of the autumn term you will be well-versed in the ways of our department. Here, you can focus on what you find most fascinating about English – whether it be linguistics, literature, or translation studies. You might explore topics such as the history of English, language learning, Canadian literature, machine translation, spoken English, language contact, internet English, book history... the list goes on. By choosing minor subjects, you can shape your degree to suit your interests and your future career. You might become a teacher, a translator, a researcher, a language specialist – or something entirely different.

You are not alone on this quest. Alongside your tutors and fellow students, the staff members will be there to guide you. You will have an academic advisor to help you plan your studies. Every staff member also has a weekly office hour. This is a time slot dedicated to meeting you, which means you can pop in without an appointment. You can also send us an email or come talk to us when you see us around. The intranet contains a wealth of information on all matters study-related. Kaffila – Our home on Uni hill Until 2013, both the Department of English and Anglica considered Juslenia our home on University Hill. It was nothing fancy a dark, gloomy and cramped corridor and a tiny class room we could only use whenever there was no teaching - but home nonetheless. The building was supposed to be renovated completely ever since the 1980s, and in 2013 they finally decided to proceed with the plans. However, it turned out that the university didn’t have enough money to do anything about the building, and there it stood, until finally being demolished this year. We all had (or got) to move to our new premises in Rosetta and Signum.

It now hosts 11 of the 12 different student organisations from the School of Languages and Translation Studies.

KAFFila is at the students’ disposal during Signum’s opening hours. You can relax, study, meet friends, have coffee or tea, eat lunch or take a nap before, between or after lectures. Anglica also holds the board meetings in KAFFila and you’re more than welcome to join in. We also have a Coffee Hour once a week where you can come deal with any Anglica-related matters (joining Anglica, buying patches, asking advice, etc.) or just hang out. Quite a few of our events are also held in KAFFila.

In January 2013 we moved into a spacious and much more cozy student space in the ground floor of Signum, that we call KAFFila for the original four resident student organisations Kääntöpiiri, Anglica, Forum Romanum and Foneemi. Parties, culture, sports and more!

Lets face it, what would study life be without good parties? Anglica is known around the campus to raise havoc roaming in the navy blue overalls while speaking Finglish loudly. Traditional parties include Turku Survival (breaking in the newbies), Kostajaiset (vice versa), Halloween, Pilttisitsit etc. Turku survival is something you should definitely not miss. During the autumn we also go on the Not-GOOM cruise. We also arrange a number of night club and sitz parties with other student organisations that you should definitely check out.

If you’re not so much into rough partying, don’t worry, Anglica has still lots to offer.

About twice in a semester we have movie nights where you can enjoy some fine films, plus board game nights & other related events if there is interest. We also organise trips to different culture events, like theatre, as well.

The sportier folk can also find plenty to do in Anglica. We’ve been expanding our palette of different sports by trying out things such as laser tag and bubble bump football recently. There’s still room for the old classics such as floorball and football as well.

There are also special events during the academic year, such as the Oldies vs. Newbies football match every autumn, and the Humanistisähly tournament every spring.

Remember, we are always open for new suggestions.

Anglicans gather every week at around the same time as Coffee Hour to Pass the Pigs.

This noble sport determines the holder or such titles as Anglica’s Number One Pig, and as such is regarded as ”serious business”. To join the fun join the SOAP Facebook group or contact Mikko Rytö either on facebook or by email at mimary@utu. fi.

You can join ARC’s Facebook group to get the necessary info on meetings and other stuff. If you’re not on Facebook, don’t worry - all necessary information will also be posted on Anglica’s mailing list.

Couldn’t find what you’re looking for? Start a new club!

In the past Anglica has had even more active clubs and we do encourage our members to step forward with new ideas for new clubs. We’ve had a food club, a beer club, and an impro group, for example. These have been quiet for a few years now but it doesn’t have to be so! If you have enthusiasm for revitalising one of the old clubs or coming up with something completely new, the board of Anglica can surely help with some practicalities!

TREASURER: sALLI sALOLAHTI How do you feel about communal living?

I’ve never tried it but I think it’s cool and I don’t really enjoy living alone so it’d probably suit me!

If you are one of those quirky humanists with a suspicious fascination towards math and accounting, this is the dream spot for you. The treasurer keeps watch on our funds and advises the rest of us on what we can afford and what we certainly cannot. They also keep record of all our expenses, and the money we receive,

membership fees and bakesale profits, for example. They also see to that all cruise, theatre and such tickets are being paid to the account, correctly and on time. The treasurer also plans the early budget together with the chair and prepares the financial statement of the year.

SECRETARY: tOMMI vIRTANEN What is something new you yourselfwould like to do or experience?

Lately, I’ve been sort of wanting to try acting of some kind. It’s just intimidating to think about remembering all of your lines or needing to be creative enough to improvise when needed.

BOOKS! And music. But books are number 1.

The Info’s most important job is to keep our members up to date on all things concerning Anglica: its work and events.

They accomplish this mostly through our mailing list, our website (and calendar) and Facebook.

They are also responsible for going through a lot of e-mails from TYY and other student organisations

and forwarding any of them that might have significance for our members. They update and take care of our mailing list, our website, and Facebook. All in all, the info-person should have a good sense of things happening with Anglica and the university in general as well, or at least he should know when the next event is going to happen.

Student bulary

Voca-

Here is a short list of words/terms you might stumble upon while trying to figure out all that there is to being a student at the Uni. To help you get to the finish line easier, these might be of use, tying to grasp the student lingo.

AATU Akateeminen aurajokilaivuritutkinto. Every year thousands of students take part in the pub crawl on the shores of Aurajoki and of course on the riverboats floating in it. Legendary.

Angelica/Anglia Common mispellings of Anglica. Often spotted at sporting events, on deliveries, etc.

Appro A pub crawl, where the goal (besides an extremely good time) is to complete different degrees, determined by the amount of drinks purchased.

BYOB Bring Your Own Bottle. Pretty self-explanatory. Applies to most parties.

Fuksi See Piltti Humanitas Organization for all students at the Department of Humanities.

Kääntöpiiri Organization for students of translation Lyni / Vegas / LyGas Night Club Marilyn, and its sister club Vegas. Often collectively referred to as LyGas. The most common place for student parties.

Noppa Study point or opintopiste.

Not-Goom An epic cruise to Stockholm and back with other English students. A must.

NAMS North American Studies. Can be taken as a minor without an entry exam. Recommended.

NMES National Meeting of English Students. Held in a different City each year, with people from every Finnish university where English can be studied as a major.

student restaurants Assarin Ullakko The newly renovated Assari is close to the hill and there is almost always a seat available. The menu probably has the most options out of all the Unica restaurants.

The food itself is well worth the price of admission, albeit sometimes there are some rather crazy experiments going on. The longest opening hours of all the Unica restaurants Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 Brygge Assari for vegetarians and vegans. Same location as Assari, but has its own line. Plenty of options are available here as well. Many swear by the protein bistro in terms of bang for buck value. Brygge closes earlier but then you can find the foods at Assari’s lines.

Delica A bit far away to quickly visit between lectures. The food is standard Unica but apparently the hamburgers can be a bit hit and miss.

Deli Pharma is located under the same roof, if you desire something fancier (and pricier: usually about 5€ instead of the standard 2,6€).

Itäinen Pitkäkatu 4 (Pharma City)

Dental A bit closer than Delica, but still too far away. Quite small but the queues are usually reasonable. Dentists.

Lemminkaisenkatu 2 Galilei Food is OK, queues are reasonable. Small variety of menu options. A cafe is located next to the restaurant, perfect place to grab a cup of coffee or a sandwich if you’re in a hurry.

Vesilinnantie 3 (Agora) ICT Good grub. Even further away than Dental and Delica. A roomy interior but a lack of menu options. You might stumble into wizard robes, capes and flat, warm coke.

Joukahaisenkatu 3-5 Kasvisravintola Keidas A must for vegetarians and other veggielovers.

Their restaurant on Uudenmaankatu serves student-priced lunch until 5 p.m.!

Uudenmaankatu 3 Macciavelli Despite the fancy name, mainly basic grub. Great salad bar.

Close to YO-kylä. A good variety of menu options for

both vegetarians and omnivores. Serves breakfast in the morning and is open till 4pm. At noon: FULL. Assistentinkatu 5 Tottisalmi Located inside the YTHS building and thus also close to YO-kylä. Queues are usually very reasonable and the place is quieter than most other Unica restaurants.

The food is among the best in terms of Unica and the staff is nice. Many consider Tottis among their Unica favourites. They have buffet lunches from time to time as well. Open on Saturdays.

Kirkkotie 13 (YTHS) Monttu If you want to know what the people at the School of Economics are up to, visit their cellar restaurant.

Rehtorinpellonkatu 3 Abo Akademi’s cafeterias Don’t forget ‘em! They’ll accept your university student card and the staff speaks Finnish.

Kristiinankatu 4 Bar Toimisto K-20 An appro staple with very affordable drinks. A bit of a dive bar but charming in its own right. Karaoke every night and you can play pool for free!

Kaskenkatu 3 Club Marilyn / Vegas K-18/20 Home to student parties most every Wed/ Thu. Different atmosphere, people, and prices during the weekend.

Eerikinkatu 19 Cosmic Comic Café K-20 Wide selection of drinks and board games as well as comics free for your perusal.

Kauppiaskatu 4, Forum Dynamo K-20 Home of Britpop. The night club with the most varied music repertoire and occasional live music.

Linnankatu 7 Edison K-19 Newly renovated and quite trendy. Sports on the big screen often. Quite crowded on weekends. Board games and pool.

Hannikaisen Olutravintola K-18 Robust and authentic. If or when you need an alcoholic beverage at 9am, this is a good choice. Great jukebox selection.

Eerikinkatu 37 Heidi’s Bier Bar K-18/K-20/K-22 A bar and a nightclub with an Austrian after ski- theme. Fairly pricey but there are often discounts. Beer pong and other specialities regularly. You just might run into familiar faces among the staff!

Aurakatu 14 Hunter’s Inn K-20 English style pub with a wide selection of beers, as well as snacks and food.

Brahenkatu 3 Koulu K-24 An old boarding school turned brewery.

Try their blackcurrant cider! The premises are totally worth seeing, especially in the summertime.

Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 Puutorin Vessa K-18 Waterloo is no more, and the days of old have thus returned. A typical pub with the charm of the building intact. Student discounts available.

Uusi Apteekki A classy bierhaus with a wide selection including whiskeys and ciders.

Kaskenkatu 1 Walo Rooftop Bar K-18 Worth a visit just for the views. A new and trendy place with drink prices to match (i.e. very pricey).

Eerikinkatu 11 Whisky Bar K-18 In the immediate vicinity from the market square, this bar provides an affordable experience enhanced with heavier music.

There’s an inexpensive jukebox available.

Never Stop the Madness: Freshman Year at a Glance Emmi Kaitarinne

It’s a peaceful Monday morning in the Student Village. Due to a certain deadly virus, all teaching has been canceled and there is not a soul on the streets. Thus, I’m in no hurry to get up and speedwalk up the University Hill to make it to class on time. However, lectures are not the only thing that have been canceled. All kinds of leisure time events have also been canceled until the end of May to protect everyone from the Corona – both the virus and the liver-damaging beverage, it seems.

As we all cope with our disappointment by making bad jokes, I can’t help but to think about the wonderful year we’ve had so far. When I moved here in the middle of August, I had no idea what I had to look forward to. I remember looking around in my tiny apartment and wondering if I would make any friends here, or just study alone at home all day every day. Ah, what a clueless little piltti I was.

The first couple of weeks were packed with all kinds of fun activities and get-togethers organized by our amazing student tutors. At first I was a bit unsure whether to take part in anything but I’m glad I did. The atmosphere was always relaxed and we had a great chance to get to know one another outside the lectures. After the city tour I had already gotten to know many fellow Anglicans and a bit of my new hometown. It turned out that I had really made the best decision of my life when I chose to study English in Turku.

Another thing that took me by surprise was that there are parties here literally every week.

Coming from arelatively small city (or just straight-up lande), I was honestly not prepared.

Partying can be exhausting. But what do you know, next Thursday you find yourself at the counter of the same bar as every week before, and the bouncers are already beginning to consider you a regular. As a side note, I really don’t want to know how much money I’ve spent on such entertainment this year...

I’ve also found that there is so much more that student life has to offer than just regular parties. The events range from casual movie nights and boardgame nights to riotous sitz parties and pub crawls to Villa weekend and Not-GOOM. They are all so different in nature that I can’t simply choose one favorite. However, among my favorites were Turku Survival and its counterpart, Revenge of the Freshmen, and their afterparties. Only after Turku Survival do you become a true Anglican, and it is Revenge of the Freshmen when you get to pay back for everything the oldies made you do – with interest, of course.

There are admittedly many things we didn’t get toexperience this year, but at least we got to witnessone important historical event. You see, this year wewere lucky to celebrate the 100th anniversary of ouruniversity. The carnival in February was truly magical and made me feel really proud that I’m a student of the University of Turku.

The madness may be on hold because of the coronavirus but I assure you: it will never stop. Hopefully next year we’ll have better luck. Stay safe and hang in there, dear Anglicans!
