Thank you to everyone for participating in making this year’s Baccanalia!
Editorial
Happy, happy, happy May Day friends!
When I first expressed my interest in becoming the editor-in-chief for Baccanalia 2023, I didn’t realize that would mean I would be writing the editorial as well. It did take me quite some time to think about what I should say here (no, you won’t find “what is an editorial” from my Google search history and if you do, that wasn’t me) but anyways, here we go.
I’ve been a part of Baccanalia’s editorial team since my Freshman year, so this will be my 4th year doing it. As a fresher I had the courage to only do a simple bingo sheet, because I didn’t trust my skills at all. The year after that, I started taking a bit more responsibility - short chunks of text here and there This, however, will be the first, real serious, big-boy article that is mine and mine only (I did write a review about some tasteful and not at all cursed wiener sandwiches, but I don’t think that counts.) So this is truly a proud moment for scrubby old me, and I am honored to have been given this responsibility.
First I want to thank our amazing editorial team: we were legit fire, and I’m so proud of all of us Right from the first meeting I felt this huge, inspirational atmosphere, and bombastic article ideas were thrown all around It felt like everyone was very into it and excited to start writing together what would be our best Baccanalia publication yet (not a biased opinion). This year’s theme - Stairway to Arcanum & 65 years of Anglica - was pretty much clear from the beginning, and building the magazine around that theme felt really easy and natural. But what will you actually find between these glorious pages?

Well, the old favorites are, of course, here again You will get to know Anglica’s board a bit more, you get to dive deep into a Fresher’s first year in the academia, and learn about our beloved professor Pekka Lintunen in an interview-type-of-article There’s a crossword puzzle to put those brain cells in use, a horoscope that’ll surely determine your future for you, the dadaistic farce to…well, I can’t really say anything about that. You’ll learn about Anglica’s newest club ASKI, hear about all the glory and magnificence of our 65th anniversary celebration, and read about our biggest and bluest crossdisciplinary event. I also have to mention a very special article on page 21 that we got the privilege to do this year: an interview with one of the actual founders of Anglica ry! How incredible is that?! For those who crave humor and sarcasm, we have something in store for you as well. I can’t possibly fit everything in here, but I recommend that you simply delve into the magazine in your hands and read - you won’t be disappointed. I wish all of you an amazing read and even better summer - we’ve all earned it.
Happy, probably hungover as you read this, and sincerely yours,
Lettis
Words from the chair
Happy May Day!
Another academic year is soon behind us and we have finally arrived at the peak of celebrations, the mother of all shenanigans: Vappu!
As I taste the noble sima drink on my lips, I find myself looking back on the year; and what a year it has been! Anglicans had to give its bittersweet goodbye to Signum’s Kaffila and move to Arcanum, where we now share the student space with other student organisations of humanities. We should see this as a chance to get to know students from different organisations better, cooperate with one another and even create new friendships.
As I pour myself another drink, I find myself being filled with joy, and honour, as I was fortunate to be the chair when we had our 65th anniversary dinner in the historical venue of Turku Castle. A celebration worthy of glorious Anglica, a night to remember. The work that was done by Anglicans is something that shows the spirit of teamwork we have here. By pulling the same rope, we can achieve wonderful things together.
As I pour myself a third drink *hic*, I feel lucky to have met unbelievable people in my time here. People that I’m fortunate to call my friends I bet that I’m not alone on this one I bet there are people you have found in our community, people who you trust with all your heart and people who make you laugh your eyes out.
Az I pour meself *hic* a drink, I start wonder what will autumn bring. I sincerely hope we’ll meet new people who are eager to help this organisation to thrive Anglica wouldn’t be anything without its members. From first year students to n-year students; I salute each and every one of you!
*hic* As I get close to the bottom of this bottle, I feel like I should mention that May Day is not the time to stress over your studies. The assignments aren’t going anywhere, exam rooms will have plenty of openings during the summer. Relax, take a load off and lift your metaphorical feet.
What I need you to do now is to have an absolutely amazing May Day! Eat a munkki, drink responsibly and be proud to be an Anglican!
Yours truly, Niiko

A year I wish to never forget

I will do my best not to turn this freshman year recap article into an Anglica appreciation post, but you know I can make no such promises There, you have been warned and so I shall not be held accountable if you encounter such cheesiness I of course do not speak for all my peers, but I will also say that what you lay before your eyes is not a retelling of a year of meticulous studying, reading the course books, and paying attention to the lectures. Surely that is someone’s story, but it isn’t mine. So if that’s what you are looking for, I kindly advise you to turn the page. I began to write this article in the middle of the night on deadline day. Surely that sums up my academic year just fine
I feel extremely lucky that I was a part of the first batch of freshers to witness a somewhat normal introduction to university life in the past couple of years. Something that can not be taken for granted and has eased our integration into academia (and the infamous student life). I had barely gotten over the initial shock of being accepted into Turku university before the orientation for us freshers began The information overload of the first few days hit us like a truck and there were activities to spare. From getting to know the city of Turku to speed friending we did it all, including losing to the Oldies in a game of football the result of which is information I am not willing to enclose. Since then we have learned the ins and outs of Anglican sitz culture, avenged the older students in the form of Kostajaiset, and sailed across the seas aboard Not-Goom We have gotten to know Q-house like the back of our hands both in the form of partying the night away and cleaning the premises the following morning We have sat through countless lectures and meetings and celebrated our beloved Anglica’s 65TH anniversary. How so many memories have been formed in such a short amount of time remains a mystery to me.
It feels like just yesterday that we were trying on the sample-sized student overalls in Signum’s Kaffila (may it rest in peace). After the initial struggle of patch sewing (and oh boy it was a struggle) it has against all odds turned out to be quite a nice activity. Since their arrival in November, our dear overalls might have lost their shine and brand-newness, but they have been the uniform for memory-making these past months and a vital part of our student identities
All that lies between us freshers and the summer with which arrives the harsh reality of us not being freshers anymore is the ever-so-famous May Day celebrations.
I will always remember this past year as a year of new friends, awesome experiences and belonging Our first year as Anglicans has absolutely flown by. Even though the reminiscing about our first year is nowhere near over and the sadnessinduced emotions of having to let go of my piltti-identity are sure to hit me sooner rather than later, I am glad to be able to say that our Anglica-years have just begun.

Britpop 20th Anniversary

DJ

When I was asked to DJ at Britpop, I obviously obliged. After all, I had been planning the setlist weeks before I had even been asked to DJ and I wasn’t going to let an opportunity of that kind to just pass by After two years of university life without Britpop, it was finally going to happen.

The realization of “holy shit, Britpop is actually happening like right now” really finally kicked in when me and my DJing buddy Niko set foot into Dynamo a couple hours before the festivities began. Of course, I was slightly nervous (this was my first live DJ performance of all time, after all), but with Niko’s assistance and my confidence in my setlist I had zero doubts about the sets going perfectly.
From near the entrance, I hear a call: “Get ready!” I start my first hour-long set From the very first moments of that set until the end of my second set, I was on cloud nine. I was over the moon. I have run out of idioms and superlatives to describe how absolutely incredible DJing Britpop was. Seeing people screaming out lyrics, dancing and having fun was such an unbelievable feeling and having people enjoy the music was the best reward I could’ve asked for.
To put it briefly, Britpop was one of the best nights of my life Bloody brilliant
Aapo HääräBoard
I had only heard legends of an event called Britpop when I started my career on the board. In my mind it was just another night club party, but when I saw the line in front of Dynamo before the festivities started, I knew immediately that I had been wrong. It was so much more than that.
A tradition from the early 2000’s, a celebration of British music and of course, Anglica as well Never in my life have I heard so many people scream Wonderwall at the same time. Seeing the joy on Aapo’s face when I walked in is forever burned into my memory You could be having a conversation with a friend, turn around and start another one with another Anglican. I must’ve spoken to over 50 people that night!
Organizing the event was fun and gave us all a sense of pride towards our community From the beautiful overall patch resembling London Underground, made by our very own Lotta Viitala to the incredible DJ’s Aapo and Niko and to all you beautiful Anglicans, Britpop’s 20th anniversary was a success!
Turku, as seen by Piltit
It comes without a saying that Turku is an amazing city to live in. I have had the pleasure of growing up only a short car drive away in a lovely little town called Paimio (love <3) and you’d think that Turku was a familiar place for me when I moved here last summer, that I knew the street names, the best bars and where the University was located In reality, I knew none of these things I was as lost as Jack Sparrow without his compass. But I managed to sail through the uncharted waters of Aurajoki and a year later, I can proudly say that I know at least 2 streets and the location of our University building My own experiences got me thinking, how were the experiences of my fellow freshmen. So I set out on a journey to find out, and interviewed a handful of freshers. Here’s what I gathered:
EVELIINA MARKKULA
Where have you migrated from?
Teuva, Etelä-Pohojammaa

One year in, how would you rate Turku and why? 4/5, it's a beautiful city especially in the summer, everything is close (and it's the true capital of Finland in my opinion), -1 for the Turku dialect and shitty winter

Weirdest thing about Turku? The existence of posankka
Have you been stuck in the Funikulaari? No, I have kept my distance
KONSTA KUUSRAINEN

Where have you migrated from?
Säkylä
One year in, how would you rate Turku and why?
Amazing. People at the uni are wonderful, getting from one place to another is quite easy here and it's especially pretty here during the summer.
Weirdest thing about Turku?
The lack of having to use public transportation as one can get pretty far here by just walking to places.
Täl puol or tois pual jokke?
Tois pual
Our cast of freshmen also include people from the faraway region of Oulu. This year we have three freshers who have completed the long journey along the western coast to find Turku. Let’s see what kind of culture shocks they have endured here in the south!
LILLI HOLMA, HENNA SILVENTOINEN & EMMI HATULA
Where have you migrated from?
Lilli: Kempele (next to Oulu)
Henna: Oulu <3
Emmi: Oulu

One year in, how would you rate Turku and why?
Lilli: I’d rate it 9/10 because it's a beautiful city with everything you need close by but there's no proper winter here

Henna: I’d rate turku a solid 8/10! It’s a pretty city with all kinds of cool people, plus it’s a great place for studying. I gotta deduct a few points for the lack of actual winter, though that might just be the Oulu in me talking…
Emmi: Hmm I have to say a solid 8,5, overall pretty good (but pska se on tämäki kaupunni)
Weirdest thing about Turku?
Lilli: People using ”ketä” instead of ”kuka”…
Henna: Insanely long red lights in traffic.
Emmi: It has been weird to see how different the seasons and weather is here It didn't (still doesn't) feel like time was passing since the weather didn't chance the same (Also people will casually try to run you over with their car and despite that people walk through red lights)
Is it piispanmunkki or berliininmunkki?
Lilli: *Berliininmunkki all the way

Henna: *Berliininmunkki 100%
Emmi: *Berliininmunkki

Everyone has their own experiences and first impressions when it comes to Turku. Let’s hope our love for this city keeps on growing! My goal for the next year is to learn how to navigate Turku without Google Maps. Tune in to Baccanalia 2024 to find out how I did!
BELLA LOZANO
Where have you migrated from?
From Espoo
One year in, how would you rate Turku and why?
8.5, big city energy but on a smaller scale. Weirdest thing about Turku?
Posankka
Explain Posankka to a non-Turkuan. A pig duck with a big butt.

VILI MARTTILA
Where have you migrated from?
From Forssa
One year in, how would you rate Turku and why?
Turku is a decent place. It’s pretty and there are lots of services here. However, I think the place needs more bicycle lanes
Weirdest thing about Turku? found the ”at this or that side of the river” thing quite confusing in the beginning. How would you rate FÖLI?
Föli deserves a six Overall, it works fine but there are some inconveniences, such as constant delays and difficulties regarding the student benefits.
Kasperi ”Kape” KaukonenGetting to know Pekka Lintunen

1. Who are you and how did you end up at the department of English?
My name is Pekka Lintunen, and I'm currently Professor of English and leading the Second Language Acquisition track. I used to be one of the university lecturers for 20 years or so, but since 2021 I have been one of the professors. I ended up at the department first as a student in the 1990s. I had always wanted to study English more, as I felt that I love the language and want to know every detail about it. Luckily I got in when I applied as the second last reserve place accepted if I remember correctly. So I knew from the beginning that I was probably one of the weakest students, and I also felt like one during spoken or written exercises. But I guess I was also quite motivated, determined and industrious student because I really wanted to learn it all, and by the time I was in advanced studies, I was doing quite well and was asked to take care of one junior assistant position before I even got my MA degree. And ever since I have been here. Then I wanted to see if I have what it takes to get a PhD, and I did it. I was never sure what I would be able to do but I always wanted to try the next step.
2. What courses have you held this year? Do you have a favorite among them?

Professors do not have much teaching, but this year I have been teaching a bit more than usual I did the Second Language Acquisition core course for intermediate studies, and Theories of Second Language Learning and SLA Methodology and SLA
Thesis Seminar for advanced studies I also gave some lectures on the Degree Programme for Language Learning and Teaching So at least this and next year I won't be doing English Phonetics where many students have met me previously I would say that my favorite this year has been the core course, because there I see many first year students and I love the questions that are asked there. I like the beginning and end of studies, so my other favorite would be the MA Thesis Seminar where we discuss very advanced questions related to research matters.
. What is your favorite thing about teaching here?
Enthusiastic students definitely. Teaching is all about collaboration, and without students there would not be much to say. I love to see reactions from the audience. This was difficult during remote teaching, but I really love to be in front of an audience to discuss something and also react to questions from the audience. The questions and comments from the audience are very welcome.
4. Did you always want to become a teacher or did you have other dream professions?
I don't consider myself a teacher often, as teaching is only a small portion of my duties here. Of course that is the part that students see the most, but I should not spend more than one day a week for teaching matters if I keep my work duties balanced. When I started university, I wanted to become a teacher of English and German but I soon realized that I'm very interested in theoretical matters, such as general linguistics or phonetics, so I didn't have time to study enough practical courses related to teaching. After some years at university, I dreamt of staying here for my profession, so I can say that I am now in my dream profession, and luckily it also includes some teaching.
5. Do you have a favorite Anglican event?
I like many events. The anniversary this year was so grand that I will never forget it. That was absolutely brilliant! But I also like very much the bake sales. They are much appreciated by the staff. I like that we have sometimes visited coffee hours or been invited to vappubooli. I like any event where there is a lot of casual interaction between students and staff because that's often when you hear important comments and get feedback on anything
6. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
This is the hardest question for me because I often feel that I work such long hours that my free time is a bit limited Even in my free time I like to think about some research project related to English a bit too often But I confess that I watch too much TV and follow all kinds of reality shows and sport events (especially skiing and track and field) I listed to a lot of music and like to follow what is on the charts and, as some of you may know, I'm interested in Eurovision trivia
7 Any final comments for the readers?

Enjoy Vappu celebrations! Remember to enjoy your time as a student, because studying at university is not all about the details to remember and books to read Studying is much a social thing as well to interact and get connections from different fields, and student life has many events and traditions Vappu is one of those important traditions and perhaps the most important annual event Vappu is not the time to worry about exams or papers to write Vappu is the time to celebrate, be together and enjoy the spring and university life The staff are there to celebrate it with you and we can discuss study matters some days after Vappu again, when we all first have enough munkki and booli
Jenna HaajaAnniversary Party101
Akamemoirsofthechairofthecommittee

We started the day as mere cloakroom workers but came out as warriors. Let the stories of that night be told to Anglicans of each coming generation but let us especially remember that hard times make us stronger Personally, I would boycott a certain astronomical photo studio on Hämeenkatu for their CEO's unprofessional answer to our concerns, but maybe that’s just the pettiness in me Other challenges we faced felt quite small after that, but our committee was determined to overcome all of them.

From picking up trash to selling sweets, our committee completed different tasks to raise money for our great occasion. At the same time began the actual party planning. Choosing the place for the party was first on the To Do -list Quite modestly, we set our minds to the Castle as “Linnan juhlat” had quite a nice ring to it.

Anglica was established on March 17th, 1958 Merely 63 years, 11 months, and 5 days later the Anglica’s 65th Anniversary Party committee had its first meeting. Compiled with some seasoned veterans and fresh newbies, our committee set its mind to arrange a party that would top all others. And I think we succeeded in that.
I believe the words “This party was effortless to organize” came out of my mouth several times during the party, and granted it felt like that at that time. Still, I remember some other moments that were not so effortless. We could start our journey to the anniversary party from February last year, but honestly, the first time our committee proved that we could do anything was on April 7th, 2022.
The second party spot to choose was for our afterparty and similarly to five years earlier, we decided to trust the familiarity of our second home Q-house The real challenge was to make the spot pretty It is surprisingly difficult to find curtains of tulle that lit up to mask some of the monstrosities of Q-house but eventually we did it. With the curtains and a couple of trips to Lotta’s boyfriend's workplace, we had everything we needed to give the Q-house an extreme makeover My reaction when I saw the hall in all of its glory was something similar after the “Move that bus!” chants ended and eventually, the bus moved in the show. I’ve never seen, and will never again see, the place as beautiful
There is one person we had zero issues with. Let this paragraph be a love letter to him. I would like to welcome you all to be part of the Erkko fan club Turku Castle’s headwaiter, captain, king Not once Erkko said no to our requests, not once there was an issue with the party planning regarding the dinner and not once I had to doubt how the party would go at the Castle Erkko took my stress away
He liberated me from the concerns about the anniversary dinner and offered me, us, the perfect evening. No mountain is too high for Erkko to conquer, no sea too deep to cross While others at the company Erkko works at were hesitant to agree to some of our suggestions,

Erkko was not one of them. When hinting that cognac was not the favorite of our members and that we would like to have a non-alcoholic version, within a split second Erkko brought Jallu up as a substitute and started to develop a non-alcoholic version. He took special diets as his mission, and no mouth was unfed at the party And lastly, as our decoration plans for the Castle failed the day before the party, Erkko came through and dug up some decorations that were even prettier than our original would’ve been. Erkko and his team made it possible for our committee to enjoy the evening at the castle to the fullest And what an evening it was.

I remember walking into the castle in my evening gown and having this feeling that this evening would be something else. That during this evening, I would be part of something magnificent. I wasn’t wrong. I’ve never seen more beautiful people than during that night, I’ve never eaten better-tasting tomatoes, and I’ve never felt more connected to the community that Anglica is Maybe the best thing was that I wasn’t the only one feeling that. Aliisa navigated us through the party beautifully, Niiko delivered one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard and Kape made me proud by reading out the updated version of a piece of Anglican history. Lotta and Oili sang beautifully and the moment Lotta and Aapo took the stage, I was unable to hold back my tears. We laughed, we cried, and we had the greatest time.

I hardly remember what I said during my spontaneous teary-eyed speech during the last moments of the party, but what I remember was the faces I saw the staff who, as stated during my speech, have already moved on from me even though I’m still lingering after some kind of recognition from them. I saw my friends who have already graduated and moved on to the next phase of their lives, the phase I would soon join. I saw my peers who are at the same point in their study lives as me and whom I hold so dear to my heart, hoping that they will be in my life after we leave university life behind. But the most memorable moment was when I saw the next generation. I turned to look to my left and saw the eagerness that the freshers have I saw tears in their eyes and thought that our community must be the greatest because within just mere months we have welcomed a new generation who feels the same as I do. Not to sound too sappy, but I saw myself and my friends in them. I kept wondering whether they looked at us oldies and thought, maybe even hoped, that in five years they would be there. Celebrating this community, celebrating the people around them, and celebrating the life this organization had given them.
After that moment everything was bliss. Qhouse had never looked more beautiful, the music Sohon Torwet played was the best music ever, and the drinks from the bar were the tastiest ever. It’s hard to say what was my favorite moment during the after-party, there were just too many of them. Dancing to Kylie and Hittiputki with the members of the staff. Eating the best pizza ever Shouting out the lyrics of ‘I wanna dance with somebody’ with my nearest and dearest around me. Spontaneously joining the Jallurinki outside. Not sitting down for a single moment until the early morning hours. Even cleaning the hall and the toilets at 7 AM was the greatest.
After that, I had a moment of peace and quiet. Pihla, my co-chair, took the reins from that moment on and delivered the perfect Silliaamiainen with the rest of the committee All that was left was chilling. The Kahoot was exciting, Bingo was nerve-racking and even the dildo-flip competition (which I won once) was perfect The biggest thank you goes to my committee Without your effort and dedication, this party would not have been as amazing as it was. Thank you for that.
But now, once more, here’s to our beloved 65-year-old Anglica and to us. Let our organization thrive for another 65 years!

Founding mother
An Interview with One of our Founders: Ulla Lipsanen.

On Easter Monday our board received the most extraordinary message on Instagram: The grandchild of one of our founders contacted us and asked if we would be interested in doing an interview. The board of course relayed this message over to our Baccanalia-team, who immediately went on to set the time for an interview. I had the honor of interviewing one of our founders, 90year-old Ulla Lipsanen. I went to meet her and I got to hear all about how our organization came to be. The interview was conducted in Finnish and has been translated by the author
Ulla Lipsanen, née Ahtimo began her studies at the University of Turku in 1957 in the Department of English She had always been interested in languages but got especially interested in English after attending a correspondence course called “English by the Nature Method”
Lipsanen remembers from the department a professor Biese, who read her laudatur seminar thesis, and his assistant Master of Arts Inna Koskenniemi Lipsanen graduated as the Bachelor of Arts in English in 1961 Back then lectures were either in Finnish or English, and were always interpreted to either Finnish or English “One time the interpreter of a lecture got sick and they needed another interpreter I was so excited I immediately raised my hand to do it”, Lipsanen laughs
The organization was originally founded in order to help organize different guest lectures for everyone interested in the English language. The organization worked together with the Finnish-American society to organize the lectures. Lipsanen remembers a specific lecturer from Spain: “There was a dance being organized and he had excitedly prepared one Finnish phrase to tell his dance partner: ‘sinä olet jumalainen’. Unfortunately as a Spanish speaker he had not quite grasped the Finnish ‘j’, and got a smack from his dance partner”, Lipsanen laughs. “He was so confused and wondered what was wrong with these Finnish women.”
Lipsanen revealed that most of the founders were women. There had been one boy she tells, who unfortunately passed away very early on.
“I think there were around 6 to 8 of us students, who decided to form this organization to help us widen our knowledge of the language with these guest lectures. The name Anglica came to us as a latin-sounding name that just felt right for the organization.”
Our signature colors came to us much later on, after Lipsanen had graduated, and in the early days of our organization, the name was all there was. When asked about the boards of her time or events that were organized, she laughs saying:

“We were not that organized back then. We were just a group of people who had the motivation and the spark to organize these guest lectures. I remember being a part of it but it was just for fun.”
Lipsanen in the end was surprised to hear about how large the organization had become.
“When I moved back to Turku, I was surprised to hear that Anglica was still alive and breathing.” She laughs.

I showed Lipsanen several photos from Anglican events and the 65th anniversary party, and told her about the events that we organize these days and what we do. Lipsanen was happy to hear that the organization had reached such magnitude.
“It is truly great to see and I wish you all the best of luck!” she laughs.

I’m blue (Da ba dee da ba di)

There are traditional events every Anglican should know like not-GOOM or the Villa weekend. For us, these events hold a special place in our hearts, but it’s never a bad time to make new traditions with new events! Anglica has participated in the Blue Overalls -event since 2022. It’s an event held in Spring, where all student organizations with blue overalls gather for an evening of various checkpoints! Here are some thoughts from Jenna and Oili, who have participated in the event for the past two years:

“I’ve always been keen on going to events During my first year of studies, we lacked collaboration with other organizations (mostly due to covid) so the blue overall event of ‘22 was a refreshing event. I had such a fun time participating in the checkpoints with my friends and being able to meet people from other organizations Battling against Forum for flip-cup with a touch of facts about France or playing some mölkky with Hansa, the checkpoints were none like the others.
This year, my position was a little different I had the courtesy of being one of the organizers and holding a checkpoint with fellow ASKIs. With all checkpoint race events, it’s always a little different depending on whether you’re the one holding the checkpoints or the one completing them, and I love both! This year, my favorite aspect of the event was how into the games people were! It’s something you don’t necessarily notice when you’re taking part, but it’s rewarding to see people having fun with the tasks you came up with. I can confidently say that although I had great blast this year, I would’ve loved to participate in all the checkpoints that were held this year!
What made me want to participate this year was the excitement I had from last year, and the need to make this year as fun as it was last year. It was a learning experience (like they always are) and I can’t wait to see what the event will evolve into as the years go on Both times the event has been organized have been super different for me personally, but they’ve had their positives and negatives in their own ways
With two years of the event behind, somehow with the timing and scale of the event, it feels like the start of spring and the amazing events that come with it. ”
Jenna Haaja”I’ve been one of the organizers of the event in both -22 and -23. The first year I was only responsible for the checkpoint I held with Lotta Viitala, and we truly had a blast I especially enjoyed competing with people from different student organizations because, as Jenna pointed out, we hadn’t had the chance to do a lot before. I love seeing students come together and celebrate the student life and culture we have in Turku The event was definitely one of the most memorable ones of my freshman year, and that’s why I wanted to take on more responsibility for organizing it this year
We managed to get even more organizations on board to join the event this year, which was clear in the number of participants this March. Once again, I had a blast setting up the competition and socializing with people from so many different faculties. There’s also no better feeling than seeing people enjoy something you’ve had a part in putting together. The smiles and laughter were contagious, and the atmosphere was buzzing the whole evening After the checkpoints, we gathered at Heidi’s to celebrate the wins and losses of the evening, but the event was nothing short of a success in my eyes. The uni-spring that’s full of events, both Anglican and collaborative ones, couldn’t have gotten a better start
I’m sure that Blue Overalls is an event that will continue many years into the future, and maybe next year, I’ll be lucky enough to participate in the event as a competitor, as new enthusiasts take over the planning and executing of the event (with all kinds of improvements - I’m sure).”

Hitting the slopes ASKI's first year

When I started my studies in Turku, I already knew that some student organizations have ski clubs that organize trips and other fun events As a person who’s spent what feels like an immeasurable amount of time enjoying the slopes and all kinds of winter activities, I very much admire this kind of student life culture However amazing Anglica was and most definitely is, it couldn’t fulfill this specific dream of mine, which resulted in the decision to do it myself. Then officially began the story of ASKI as I gathered my dear friends Lotta and Jenna together and started to plan.
It took a while to get the official approval to form a club under Anglica, but when our beloved emeritus chair Veera gave us the green light, we couldn’t have been more ready. First, we started recruiting for our board, with whom I’ve had the pleasure of making my small idea come to life in a better way than I could ever have imagined. So first and foremost, thank you, Jenna, Lotta, Klaara, and Noora - alone, we wouldn’t have made it a year. When we had our organizing members together, we had a small launch evening where we revealed our daring plans for the upcoming academic year.

The highlight of the year followed in January, as I got to live in my fantasy of an academic ski trip abroad Somehow we had managed to get a group together, take care of all logistics and finally make it to HelsinkiVantaa with our heads turned towards Cervinia in the Italian Alps. After the flight and a three-hour taxi drive, we finally arrived at the snowy and beautiful destination You bet all phones were out photographing the scenery during the whole drive. Our first ski day had the best weather we could’ve asked for. The sun was shining as we came down the slopes with our legs burning from fatigue, just in time to be saved by a cold frosty one or a refreshing Aperol spritz The after-ski scene also didn’t fail to impress, and I for sure can’t call my coming down the hill skilled snowboarding after dancing on the tables of Love Cervinia. Coming home, I was so proud of what kind of trip we had managed to put together, even though it contained its ups and downs (literally on the slopes but also figuratively). We all made it back to Finland safe and sound, and the hot topic of the flight back was, of course: “Where to next year?”

What was especially important to me was that ASKI would offer fun activities for everyone at Anglicaincluding people who don’t ski or snowboard All of us on the board also wanted to put a lot of effort into those events, so we started planning our Winter Olympics with high hopes And rewarded we were: on the cold Shrove Tuesday afternoon, Anglicans gathered to battle for the winter’s sporty championship, warmed up by offerings from Jägermeister and other drinks and snacks. After this, everyone got to melt the ice that had formed inside their bones in the warmth of TYY’s Sauna. The evening was fun, and there really isn’t anything better than seeing people enjoy something we at ASKI had created together

Then, to finish the winter off with a blast, we organized a domestic ski trip to Himos, where - granted - we might’ve spent more time in the hot tub than the actual slopes. Miami Boys Choir still circles around my head after the trip, and I think I’ll know the song by heart for the rest of my life (thanks Juuso). Now that it’s time to finally put down my skis and snowboard for a well-deserved rest during the summer, we couldn’t not say goodbye to the spectacular season of 22-23 without a proper celebration By joining forces across faculties, SkimbaLEX, TESKI, and ASKI held a joint funeral for the nousut and laskut of the academic year, as we already have our sights on next year ' s adventures.
This truly has been one of the biggest achievements of my two short academic years, and I hope that ASKI continues to offer these one-of-a-kind experiences for many years to come Thank you to everyone who’s been a part of ASKI so far, and see you again for the foolishness of 23-24 <3.

Kaffila memoirs

For many of us, saying a last goodbye to Kaffila was quite a sad moment. Fortunately Kaffila will always live in our hearts and our memories. Here are a few of those memories.
As a 2019 fresher, I only got to experience about half of my first year in Kaffila before Covid-19 shut everything down. Of course as a board member I got to hang out there a bit more during the pandemic as well - we got to hold most of our meetings there, so most of my latest memories are from our beloved board meetings. However, the best memories I have from Kaffila are from those 6-ish months during my fresher year - when I tell you that Kaffila was the place to be, I mean Kaffila was The Place To Be. Whenever there was a coffee hour or I had a break between my lectures, I would find myself sitting on those old, scrubby sofas and drinking that free, bitter coffee. Kaffila would always be full of people and full of sounds, the atmosphere would be a mixture of oldies complaining about their theses, newbies ranting about their lectures, and laughter. More often than not we would have a Pig Passing tournament during those breaks, and man, was it intense. The yelling and intensity of the game made me be late from my lectures so often that I would be ashamed if it hadn’t been for a good reason (!). In Kaffila, it didn’t matter who you hung out with: it always felt like everyone was in the same boat, and coming to Kaffila always felt like coming home.
Lea-Lotta HuurtelaThere’s couple of things that I learned in Kaffila and those things have stuck to me for the past 7 (oh god) years 1 Generally you can talk to anybody in Anglica I’m sure the distance learning periods might have affected this a bit, but generally I feel comfortable to walk into a space where there are anglicans and just talk about anything and everything, least likely your studies 2 Anglicans are loud You knew you were about to have a good time when you heard the laughter and babble from Kaffila all the way to the front doors of Signum. The times were especially good when the staff of the Phonetics department passive aggressively closed the door to the hallway.
3. Drink your coffee black. When I started, it was more of a rule than an exception that there was no milk in Kaffila. As a coffee deprived fresher I could’ve sulked and said “Miksei hallitus tee mitään?”, but when the addiction is strong and the need even stronger, you adapt.

When I think about Kaffila, I think about how it was homey and how we loved it even if it was a bit old or worn out. The posters on the walls didn’t look brand new, the sofas had seen better days and the kettle was a bit rusty, but it was all just right for Kaffila. The whole place was so multipurpose too - you could do your Grammar homework there, or skip that Grammar class and take a nap instead, or drink a cup of coffee or tea and talk with your friends Anything and everything, all of the time, that’s what Kaffila was!

Otava Korkka

When I first set foot inside Kaffila I must say my first thought was “oh my god what is this”, but very quickly I came to love the space The best memories of Kaffila for me include finding weird relics (like the iconic Twilight blanket) and listening to older students tell me “you don’t actually have to read all of the ConLit books” and “yeah wish you the best of luck with that phonetics exam, you won’t pass” They were correct
Hanna Aro
The most memorable moments I got to make in Kaffila were the endless board meetings that somehow were made enjoyable by fellow Anglicans and, of course, the anglican pets! There were countless moments where Tenho would disrupt our meetings by begging for scratches or by escaping out the door into the hallway, no matter who made the mistake of going to open the door for latecomers or going to the bathroom.

Sounds of Anglica

There are quite a few things that make Anglica’s parties worth going to: great people, drinks, room temperature food, games and - of course - fantastic music. Bangers after bangers.
So I decided to go on a journey to discover the true sounds of Anglica - songs that remind fellow Anglicans of the organization, the people and the events and also songs that they consider their own theme songs.
The results may surprise you (although, they also may not).
What songs remind you of Anglica?

Here are a few songs that got singular mentions:
Sweet Caroline

I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Metro Spider
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! ( A Man After Midnight)
God Save The King
Life Is A Highway
And, finally, here’s the top 3.
In 3rd place, we have Africa by Toto A true Anglica singalong classic In 2nd place, we have Hittiputki A guaranteed way to get people on the dancefloor for almost ten minutes In 1st place, It’s Kylie by Akcent. It was always going to be Kylie, wasn’t it? It demolished all other competitors.
It wasn’t even close. How could I put the sheer cultural impact of Kylie in just a few words? It’s an infectious, incredibly catchy dance pop tune and participating in the choreography during the chorus along with your friends is a blast
It’s an absolute anthem, and according to several fellow Anglicans, it’s the song that brings about the spirit of Anglica.
Anglican Theme Songs
Listed below are a few songs that Anglicans named as their personal theme songs. Slap them on your May Day playlists and maybe even try to guess who named which song!

This is an easy one. They say that laughter lenghtens your lifespan. So, what sounds more fun to you? Hedonism for the win is what I would recommend ;)
Can pulling an all-nighter help when you haven't studies for an exam at all?
Well, all the all-nighters in the world couldn't have saved me in the Phonetics exam (and still haven't), but sometimes even common sense will take you far. So yes and no - you choose

A piece about ferrets

Ferrets – what are they like?
Floof noodles, carpet sharks, poop machines, a beloved pet has many names. Today I’m going to talk about what it's like to own a species most of you know as ferrets.

I’m the (mostly) proud owner of two ferrets, Koopa, an almost two-year-old big stinky boy and Kirby, a tiny but very feisty girl who just turned one. And yes, they are named after Nintendo characters.
I have always been interested in ferrets and about three years ago I started doing research on how to become a ferret-mom. In Finland you can’t just march into a pet store and buy ferrets, they come from breeders, which means the process of getting a ferret is similar to getting a dog Ferrets are only in heat during spring and summer, so all baby ferrets are born during that time. Since there are not that many ferret breeders in Finland, many of them have a waiting list for people who would like to own a ferret In short, getting a ferret is not easy
My ferrets are both imports outside of Finland, Koopa moved here from France and Kirby from Hungary. They are co-owned with a breeder from Turku, which means that they will make babies for the breeder at some point

Owning ferrets is easy and difficult at the same time. Our ferrets have a big two-story cage in which they are when we are not home or are sleeping. Ferrets can sleep up to 20 hours a day, but when they are up, they will cause ruckus Our ferrets usually free roam everyday mornings and evenings before their feeding time. The best diet for ferrets is raw food (our ferrets love chicken necks), but they can also eat cat food.
One of the more difficult things about owning ferrets is that they will poop everywhere Our ferrets mostly do their business in the litter box they have in their cage, but accidents happen, and making it in time to the litter box is not their top priority.
One of the most asked questions about ferrets is “do they stink?” They do and they don’t Of course, we are used to their smell, so we don’t really smell it but normally they smell just like any other animal. When they are in heat, they do stink. Especially the males. So normally, no, when in heat, yes
Ferrets are social animals, they like watching their owners and participating in their daily life. Sometimes, if they are tired enough, they might even fall asleep on your lap We take our ferrets outside on leashes more during the summer and they like finding hiding spots and digging dirt. Ferrets let you know they are happy by dooking. Dooking is a sound that they make when they are excited, and it sounds similar to the sound that a chicken makes Ferrets usually also do well with other bigger animals like cats and dogs but they are tiny predators, so rodents and ferrets in the same household is not a great idea.
In short, ferrets are active, loving, messy, feisty and cute. They are great pets, but not the easiest!
