Editorial I’ll tell you something kind of weird for an editor-in-chief of Baccanalia to say. I hate the Baccanalia Editorial page.

I first got the job way back in 2019, and to be completely honest I still haven’t figured out what purpose the page has. As much as I might value this paper and appreciate the amount of work that goes into it every year, even I can’t with a straight face tell you that people are clamoring to hear our team's hot takes on pressing issues every May Day. That’s probably okay, to be honest. Just in case someone did come here for salient political analysis though, let’s say war is generally bad.

Often the role of the Editorial is a complex web of escalating redundancies. It can be a vehicle for the editor wax poetic about what a year it’s been, and what great summer and generally bright future we have ahead of ourselves.

I genuinely would have no problem having the Editorial just be this nice and heartfelt message to the community, if it weren’t for the fact we already have that in the form of the Words from the Chair section on the very next page.

The last role the Editorial has had has been serving as a glorified addendum to the table of contents. This is probably where the page is at its most useful. All of these problems would be solved by leaning into this and just calling the whole thing “The Introduction”.

But that’s a decision for whoever is in charge next year. I’ve found a lot of joy in heading this project three times in the last four years, but I think it’s time we hand this thing to someone with less gray in their hair and more time on their hands. So, if you were wondering why I didn’t just put my money where my mouth is and replace The Editorial with an introduction, the answer is I simply wanted to write one last one of these patchwork subject matter salads. Please indulge me.

Thank you to all the Boards for trusting me with getting a paper out on time. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this magazine throughout the years, with some special thanks to my older friends and colleagues who I know can put an entertaining sentence together, that I would message like clockwork every March to ask them to write a paragraph about this or that subject. Last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to Emma Lehtinen, who has continually saved my ass with her dedicated work doing the layout of each magazine.

Thanks for reading this magazine, whether it’s your first one or your fifth, and thanks for reading my last Editorial. Let’s hope it’s the last one in general.

Words from The Chair Hello all and happy May Day! So, this is vappu. It feels weird, I’m a thirdyear student and this is the first time I’m experiencing the real student May Day festivities. How is it, future me? (Amazing, right?)

I feel like this academic year has brought some light for the future. Aside from the slight set back in January and February, things have felt relatively normal. We’ve been slowly going back into contact teaching and have had an opportunity to organize most of the yearly events that I think we’ve all been waiting for.

When I started my studies here almost three years ago, I would’ve never thought this organization would become this big of a part in my life. As a starry eyed piltti, everyone seemed so cool and grown up, how could I ever be like them? Well, I don’t know if I’m cool and I’m definitely not grown up (but rarely anyone is really), but as it turns out, you don’t have to be.

In my time as a Chair, I’ve had a bad habit of comparing myself to others, especially to the Chair people before me. I will never be like them, I will never compare, yada yada yaa. The silly thing is, I don’t have to be like them, and neither do you. It doesn’t matter how you compare to your peers, in studies or in life in general. Your time in university is not a race, you don’t have to be the fastest or the best, it’s okay to just chill and enjoy the ride sometimes.

And there is a lot to enjoy, especially in Anglica. The traditions, parties and other events, but most importantly the people. This is a community I hope everyone can join and be themselves in. For me, Anglica is home and Anglicans are a family when my real family is far away. And that is how I hope you see it too!

If you don’t that’s quite alright, I still love seeing you attend the events tho!

So that should be right about it? Something about the academic year, something meaningful and deep and something about the significance of Anglica to me, seems like a pretty good Words from the Chair to me.

To summarize, come to the events, experience the community, you are cool and great (You are an Anglican for pete’s sake!), and whether this is your first (real) or 11th May Day (I’m looking at you Pirkka…) remember to enjoy it!

The year someone pressed fast-forward

It seems almost illegal to reminisce about freshman year when it truly feels like no time has passed since the last days of August when I walked cluelessly around the University campus for the first time. The fading of my social status as a “piltti” has come naturally, but it still feels somehow unbelievable that the year is approaching its end. Looking back at the year I’ve had, it seems as though I’m experiencing early-onset dementia, only remembering a blur of exams, in-person and online lectures, parties, and other hilarious and thrilling moments. After closer inspection of the memories saved on Snapchat, and looking through photos on my phone, it’s all starting to come back to me. One thing, however, is certain: someone pressed fast-forward in August.

The year started off with several activities the tutors and Anglica had arranged that familiarized us freshers with each other, other students, and the new reality we had entered as we pressed the accept button in Opintopolku making us official students at the University of Turku. During the orientation weeks, the piltti-population of 2021 started to make friends and form connections as we participated in activity after activity, all while desperately trying to understand the website Peppi. We played professional-level football at the Oldies versus Newbies game and sang at karaoke (or shouted across the table like me) till our lungs collapsed. At this time we were also introduced to one of the biggest challenges that would be present throughout the upcoming years we’d spend here in Turku: how to mentally, physically, and financially keep up with the partying and nightlife we were meant to conquer.

As the classes began, both online and in-person, our integration into University life became more lasting.

Autumn raced by as phonetic symbols became engraved in our brain and the amount of money spent on Wolt became undisclosed information. Soon we - the innocent and clueless pilttis - won the beer pong championship held in Villa, became true members of Anglica by performing life-threatening tasks at Kastajaiset, and tried our best to not get “sea-sick” at Not-GOOM. We weren't innocent anymore. As autumn approached its end, we also gathered our first academic credits with varying success, (perhaps) erasing our cluelessness as well. After an ecstatic yet tiring first half of the academic year, coronavirus, the Finnish government, and the university granted us much needed rest in the form of a winter holiday with closed bars.

Winter and spring have now gone by in the same record-breaking-Usain-Bolt-speed, as the final exams of the year await as does the almost four-month university-free summer. The insta-handle @jallutyttojenmatkassa continued to document the highlights of our piltti-year, as our wallets kept on shrinking and the count of academic credits went up. I have also almost entirely shed my piltti-year skin, only waiting for the first May Day shenanigans where I’ll get to wear my overalls and the infamous Lakki. During the spring I have come to terms with moving on from my freshman year. After all, I’m not even completely done with everything it contained: the final boss called “English Phonetics exam” still awaits defeat.

Staff Interview 1. What is your name and how did you end up here at the Department of English?

My name is Pauliina Peltonen. I used to be a doctoral student at the department and gained my PhD in 2020. After that, I worked as a project researcher in a project called "MultiFluency" and started in my current position as a university lecturer in the autumn of 2021.

2. Did you ever consider studying something else besides English?

Psychology was another option I considered, but I decided to prioritize studying for the English entrance exam. Obviously, I'm very glad I did and have been very happy with my choice (and got to include a little psychology in my degree as well in the form of a minor subject)! Funnily enough, one of the reasons I ended up not choosing psychology was the statistics – which I now regularly use in my research!

3. What is your field of specialty? Are you currently doing any research?

My specialty is second language acquisition (SLA). Much of my research has focused on second language speech, especially fluency. I'm currently involved in two fluency-related research projects at the department, the previously mentioned "MultiFluency" and "Fluency and Disfluency Features in L2 Speech". Our fluency research group is called FlowLang, and you can find more information about our current research here: https:// sites.utu.fi/flowlang/ 4. How was it starting at the Department during the pandemic? Pros and cons?

Luckily, I had been working at the Department in different roles also before my current position, so the transition was quite smooth. During the pandemic, the remote working mode and Zoom meetings have become part of our everyday routines, which has, on the one hand, made it easier to connect with colleagues abroad. On the other hand, I haven't met students face-to-face as much, but hopefully more already next autumn.

5. What’s the best experience you’ve had at University of Turku so far?

There have been many very enjoyable experiences related to different kinds of teaching and supervision situations (both remotely and on campus), but I have to say that hearing students engaged in group discussions in the classroom after a long period of remote teaching was something that has stuck with me.

6. If you could teach any kind of course, what would it be about?

It would probably be centered around the themes of fluency, second language speech, and interaction. The course would combine both theoretical and practical aspects and give insights into what it's like to work with spoken data and conduct research with authentic L2 speech samples. (And we actually have an optional course called "Researching SLA" coming up next fall that is very close to what I've described here, so stay tuned! :))

7. What’s your favorite thing about Turku?

So many things! Turku is a cozy town, and I like how everything is within a walking distance. Kupittaanpuisto and Ruissalo are some of my favorites during summertime, but I also love to take long walks in the city centre along the riverbank.

8. What do you do in your free time?

Movies, music, and reading are some of my hobbies. Especially before the pandemic, I used to go and listen to live music whenever I had the chance.

9. What is your favorite May Day tradition?

Going to the Taidemuseonmäki and just soaking in the atmosphere there.

10. If there was one food and drink you could have for the rest of your life, what would those be?

Tough one! I love a good cappuccino with oat milk, so I'll choose that. For food, can you really answer anything else besides pizza?

11. Any advice for the students?

The pandemic times have not been easy, so remember to take care of yourselves! When you work or study from home, your spare time and studies/work can easily become blurred. It's important to take breaks and to completely get your mind off study and work-related things every once in a while.

Sitz Stories The tale of the surprise Cage Kalle Moilanen One fateful spring, my girlfriend had the great idea to pull a little prank on me. During one week, every time she was alone in my apartment, she decided to hide small pictures of Nicholas Cage doing the meme-famous ”You don’t say” face (from the 1988 movie, Vampire’s Kiss) in different nooks and crannies around the apartment. All through spring and on to summer, I kept finding these delightful pictures everywhere, for example, inside a shoe, under my bed, behind a mug, inside my wallet, behind my phone cover etc. The prank was harmless, it was funny, and it got no-one in trouble...or so I thought. Summer went by and we were both pretty sure I had found all of the pictures, and were just excited to start a new year of partying and sometimes studying at University. We both secured a spot in that year’s pilttisitz, and were excited to join other Anglicans in a night of singing and drinking, while being careful not to burn our tongues on the scalding hot salad. We got dressed up all fancy, grabbed our drinks and songbooks, and headed to the party. I noticed that I had been seated at the end of one of the tables, right next to the lead table. ”Well whatever”, I thought, ”I know how to behave!”

After the introductions etc, came the traditional start of the sitz, the first song, Helan går. I cleared my throat, grabbed my song book (not because I needed the lyrics, just out of tradition) and opened it…

Out from between the pages, floated a crisp, well preserved picture of Nicholas Cage. Time seemed to slow down, as the picture delicately played upon the air, making a turn and a flip, and landed face up on the floor, right in front of lead table. My friends leading the sitz noticed. They looked up at me. I looked at them. Confusion quickly turned into laughter, as more people realized what had happened. Because the start of the sitz had now been derailed for a few moments, I got punished. I got to be a part of a true classic: the pocketwarm non-alcoholic beer relay. But at least my team won! The rest of the night was wonderful, as far as I can remember, but I will never forget how it began, especially as I still have the picture taped up on the first page of my song book Pirkka Hallamaa Having attended roughly 50 sitz parties, I think I can safely say that every sitz is a humongous opportunity.

New friendships get forged, unjustified punishments take you outside your comfort zone and you get to know how tolerant your co-anglicans are of your off-key singing. As to my personal favorite sitz experience, I have to say it was leading the codeNaMES sitz party in Turku with two dear friends. It was a once in a lifetime experience and a privilege to show all the other English studying cities in Finland how to sitz correctly. So I dunno, try to get to the lead table of the NMES sitzes if possible?

Paul-Erik Niit Picking a single sitz party memory is hard because there are oh so many wonderful ones, but I'll go ahead and share what I felt before and after my very first sitz party, the Fresher Sitz of 2014. I remember being nervous on my way to Mäkitupsu because the list of rules posted in the Facebook event (which can still be found) seemed long, and the repeated use of the word punishment in it was intimidating. Long story short, I quickly realized that it was in vain, as it’s all fun and games. Experiencing the joyful atmosphere, the great songs and their traditions, the hilarious mess that are punishments, the gradual descent (or ascent?) towards chaos, the bittersweet final moments and the sitz after-party (and the after-after-party) all for the first time really ignited my love for sitz parties, to which even crutches wouldn’t stop me from going. In a way, sitz parties are landmarks of one’s time in Anglica. The very first one introduces you to some of the best time you can have as a student, while the last one is where many, myself included, sing their last Auld Lang Syne (of their studies, at least) with just something in their eye.

I guess I have learned a thing or two about sitz-going, and to summarize my advice: do it your way. Go all out with your costume or try my strategy and print out a fresh meme and stick it to your shirt. Get on the stage or opt out of that. Request your Yogi Bear or, well, don’t. Just remember to eat before you go and you’re golden.

Mikko Rytö I’ve sitzed a whole bunch through the years. Many of these sitzes have been among the best experiences of my student life, others not so much. I’ve been part of the leading table a couple more times than I probably should. One time I started the night with the common folk, had a few, staged a coup, and ended up leading the last half an hour.

Apart from being in charge, I’ve never been to an Anglican sitz without getting punished. I’m a good boy but it keeps happening. My punishments have included being locked in a cardboard dungeon without my Valdemar.

That was as bad as it got, man.

Gosh sitzing’s a load of fun. Let’s go again.

What Does KonMari Have to Do with Study Motivation?

Last December, when new year 2022 was approaching, I was looking for a way to kick off the year with renewed study motivation to get my BA Thesis done. I was in the bookstore with my mom and a beautiful minimalistic book cover caught my eye. The title of the book was KonMari – Työnilon löytämisen taika (Joy at Work: Organizing Your Professional Life). I rarely get the urge to buy a book – because libraries – but when I saw this one I knew I had to buy it. I read it in a couple of days and now I’m ready to spread the joy to you.

Joy at Work is written by Marie Kondo, an internationally known expert on organizing and tidying, and Scott Sonenshein, an organizational psychologist from Rice University. You’ve probably heard of the KonMari Method already. To put it shortly, it’s a way to tidy up your home and get rid of things that do not spark joy in your life. Joy at Work brings the KonMari Method to work life. The book encourages the reader to organize their working environment, workload and use of time among other things. It all starts with cleaning your desk and eventually you’ll become more efficient and more satisfied with your work.

In my mindset, studying is my primary work at this moment. I want to excel at my work and find joy in it even though I have to do things I don’t always feel like doing. Joy at Work makes several excellent points about what we can do to make ourselves feel happier at work. Sometimes it feels like we don’t have much say in our working conditions but even small choices can make a big difference. Often we also have more power than we realize. Joy at Work tells inspiring real-life stories about people who changed their lives after organizing their workspace and focusing on what brings them joy at work.

After reading Joy at Work, I felt motivated to study and empowered in general. Instead of focusing on all the stress I was feeling about getting my Bachelor’s degree, I focused on all the good things. I realized that I am studying something that genuinely interests me and that I am working towards a valued degree. Studying can be stressful and tiring but there is something I can do about it, and it all starts with a clean desk. So, I cleaned my desk, bought a new table runner and a fake plant to cheer me up and got to work. I was happier, my mind felt less foggy and I was more efficient than before. My desk has admittedly relapsed into a chaos several times during the past few months but I’ve cleaned it again and reminded myself of all the things Joy at Work taught me. Sometimes, if I didn’t feel like cleaning my desk, I went to the library and found a clean table there.

I definitely recommend everyone to read Joy at Work: Organizing Your Professional Life. The book might feel overly optimistic at times but I encourage you to keep an open mind. Studying requires recurrent motivating, and if you feel like you’ve hit a wall, maybe Joy at Work can give you new insights on how to get back on the track. Student Politics - sTYYlish or not?

What is a student union council? - A brief introduction to TYYn edustajisto The Student Union Council (edustajisto) is the highest authority in TYY (the student union of the university of Turku). The council consists of 41 members and the term lasts two years. They make the biggest decisions of the student union! I ran for the first time last autumn and got elected, and my experience has been great so far. Here’s a brief introduction to the council and my experience.

Who? Any member of TYY can run (and vote)! Altogether, there are 41 TYY members from all faculties. I see many of the other members (also edaattorit in Finnish) as my friends, too! Of course, you don’t always see eye to eye with everyone, but fortunately everyone knows how to behave - most of the time. For me, working on decision-making with so many different people from different faculties is probably the best thing about edari.

Even when there are disagreements, they make for great learning opportunities.

What?

The council holds the highest decision-making power in TYY. They decide how much money is used and on what. They (or, I guess, we) approve the plan of action, elect the executive board of TYY, and make sure that they do their jobs well! The council meets once a month (ish). In addition, there are various bodies of the university, committees and so on that the council elects members for and looks over. I know it sounds complicated and like you have to know a lot about everything, but that’s not exactly the case - being interested in learning and doing is the key!

How? and How do I run?

It works sort of like local politics. There are candidate/council lists, some of which are political, and others related to your area of study, and anyone can run for council with a list. The lists with the most votes get the most candidates elected, and the candidates with the most votes in their respective lists get elected. They then make decisions for TYY for two years, in short. The next election takes place in autumn 2023. You should contact the list (edustajistoryhmä) you would like to run with, and they will help you further! Find them listed on TYY’s website :) I want to know more!

All in all, being in the council has been a great learning experience, and I feel like I am just getting into it. And, it’s actually fun!

Aapo Rauha Elected member for the term 2021-2022

SPIN THIS: A few good albums to spend a good few hours with Aapo Häärä I adore music. Exploring music and its millions of genres and subgenres is a passion of mine and finding new favorite albums in unexpected places is always a fantastic experience. I’m here to spread the joy of discovering music to all y’all!

Angel Olsen – All Mirrors If you’ve recently experienced heartbreak (or want to feel like you have) this is the album for you.

This album is an exercise in understanding oneself and one’s own emotions. It’s about healing, self-acceptance, loneliness and moving on after devastating events.

All Mirrors also doesn’t lack variety. In one song you can hear soaring string sections and Olsen’s vocals hitting peak intensity and in another you can hear Olsen almost whispering alongside very quiet and tender instrumentation. In other words, this album has quite a few different flavors of sad.

I’ll especially recommend ‘Chance’. That song hits like a wrecking ball.

Olsen will also be releasing a new album on the 3rd of June, so make sure to check that out as well. It will be brilliant without a doubt.

The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses Look. If you know me and have been around me, you’ve probably heard one of the songs off this album.

That is because I don’t think I’ve ever heard an album this catchy and fun to listen to.

Created in the late 80s into the baggy scene (which was heavily influential to the mid-90s britpop scene), this album has ridiculous replayability, its rhythms are almost hypnotizing and it is such a blast to sing along to.

With incredibly satisfying guitar tones, great vocal performances (and stunning background vocals), rock-solid drumming and a healthy helping of summery psychedelia, you really can’t go wrong with this album.

The first three songs are a must-listen, especially ‘Waterfall’. I adore that song. It’s almost like a theme song to me.

Interpol – Turn on the Bright Lights Interpol is one of those “inbetweener”-kind of bands. Not experimental enough for long-lasting critical praise but also not mainstream enough for widespread radio play.

That being said, this is one of the finest post punk-adjacent albums created, ever. I love this album and its dark, haunting, melancholic atmosphere. I love Paul Banks’ eerie vocals. The bass-playing is elite tier and the drumming is as reliable as a metronome.

It’s hard to recommend just a single song off of this album, since it is just such an experience to listen to the whole way through. However, the tracks below are my personal high points on the album.

Heikki Lyytinen COVID-19 hasn’t been all bad! I’ve had so much time to listen to new music. That’s why I’ve come up with three album recommendations from my new (and not so new) musical discoveries. You never know when you’ll find your next favourite record!

Anri: Timely!! (1983) Citypop (loosely defined as Japanese pop music from the 70s and 80s) is a relatively new discovery for me as a genre. There’s nothing more exciting than really immersing yourself in a new genre of music. Thousands of hours worth of stuff to listen to!

This album is the perfect introduction to the genre for new listeners.. The vocals are pitch perfect and instrumentation is immaculate. Saxophones, funk guitars, horns, glistening synthesisers. It’s all here!

“Timely!!” is the perfect soundtrack for the upcoming summer. Listening to it, I can vividly picture myself walking the streets of Turku, on a perfect sunny day. Anri is truly the queen of good vibes.

Massive Attack: Mezzanine (1998) From the cheery summer vibes of Timely!!, we’re moving on to something completely different. This is one the ultimate dreary vibes albums. Perfect music for the dark winter of Finland or when you’re driving at night.

You might have actually heard some of the songs on this album. “Teardrop” is famous for being the theme of the popular television series House MD. The first song of the album “Angel” is also a 90s classic.

Grab yourself a pair of headphones. The thumping bass and the rough guitars really hit you when listened to on good audio gear. A glass of good whiskey is also recommended.

Risto: Risto (2004) My final recommendation is some Finnish music! The band Risto is simply amazing. I think my friend Pirkka Hallamaa introduced me to the band about 10 years ago. They’ve been one of my favourites ever since.

This album has it all. From a touching ballad describing a golden shower (Sade, kultainen sade), to a heartbreaking tale about a failed relationship (Nina, olen palasina). There’s something for everyone.

The music is basically rock with some rough synths mixed in. What really makes the music special is the performance of the singer Risto Ylihärsilä. The lyrics are incredibly vulgar but at the same time strangely touching. The line between singing and spoken word is dabbled with constantly. I love it!

Mikko Rytö The Taxpayers: To Risk So Much For One Damn Meal (2010) In the summer of 2018 I had a job delivering mail. I spent those duskless nights cycling around undecipherable blocks of apartments, cursing my boss, and listening to The Taxpayers. Song titles like “Everything Is Awful” and “It Gets Worse Every Minute” aside, the general vibe of the music is very positive. For what is nominally a punk record, many of the tracks include pretty horn sections and piano parts. This album always makes me feel like coming home while the sun rises ahead of me.

Track picks: Louisiana Hot Sauce Rainy Nights Some Kind of Disaster Relief It Gets Worse Every Minute

The Mountain Goats: The Sunset Tree (2005) A regrettable amount of you have had to listen to me go on and on about The Mountain Goats, so I’ll try to control myself. The Sunset Tree is not the best album by this band, nor is it even my favorite. It does however capture a summer vibe that I place enormous value on. I listen to songs like Dance Music on my way to see friends by the river, and This Year, Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod, and Dance Music again when I come home and drink my last beer of the night.

It’s a simple album instrumentation-wise, but the songs have a beauty to them that has kept me coming back for years.

If you like this I’d strongly recommend some of their other albums, like Tallahassee. Or Transcendental Youth. Or Dark In Here. Or All Eternals Deck. Ok I’ll stop.

I really should’ve just written a Mountain Goats tier list or something.

This thing is 2 hours and 45 minutes long, containing, if you’d believe it, 69 love songs. The tracks differ wildly in length, genre, instrumentation, types of love depicted, and basically everything but the writing credit. It doesn’t need to be listened to in one sitting, or in any order. You can pop it on shuffle and listen to a couple songs every now and then. There’s some jazz, a story with Cher, a Gilbert and Sullivan homage. Give it a whirl.

May Day Snack Recommendation (TW: cursed food & wieners) Feeling malnourished after all the May Day celebrations? In need of a salty snack to get you back to the land of the living? Lucky for you, this page is the solution for your problems. I have spent years and years gathering information and knowledge about the perfect bready snack for myself, and I’m willing to share my results with you. Here are my top 3 picks for the most delicious (some might say cursed) sandwiches.

The first one is a pretty classic one. Delicious Finnish rye bread, some butter, cheese, crunchy pickles that make your mouth water and some wieners on top (because I ran out of ham.) This particular sandwich marks the beginning of my wiener-sandwich era as I realized that wieners can, in fact, be used in sandwiches just as well as ham. 4/5, very tasty, you can never go wrong with pickles and wieners.

The second recommendation is a classic toast topped with butter, processed cheddar cheese, wieners and – get this – mayonnaise. This picture only is enough to make me absolutely lose my mind from the cravings. The softness of the processed cheese is a perfect match for the sturdy wieners. I’d give this one a 4,5/5 (texture and color bonus).

Lastly, the grand winner: avocado cheese wiener sandwich. Oh boy. The base is again a delicious (toasted) toast (toast recommendation: Vaasan Taika Monivilja.) But this time, instead of butter, we have avocado! Well, actually smashed avocado with some lemon, salt and pepper, but you get the drill. On top of that, some cheese, then two fridge-cold wieners, and MORE cheese. I made some interesting choices, gotta admit. But the result was _heavenly_. Straight 5/5, the combination is weird enough to put you on your guard but the pure tastiness surprises you like a sudden summer rain and makes your intestines sing in joy.
