This is a worldwide acknowledgement for the efforts that Anglia Print Ltd have made towards reducing their environmental impact over a period of 15 years. The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) is the largest professional body for environmental practitioners in the United Kingdom and worldwide, with nearly 15,000 members.

Up against large UK based and international organisations, the Judge’s said, “This company demonstrated a clear organisational focus on sustainability that was at the core of its business strategy. It recognises the challenge of continuing to achieve year-on-year improvements. It has continued to innovate, including through an industry-first use of paper rather than plastic tape in packaging and engaging on sustainability issues at both regional and sectoral levels.”

The company has taken transformational action with energy use and its main printing press, drastically reducing energy requirements, set up resources, process waste and water use. In 2016, Anglia Print received a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development in recognition of its efforts.

It counts Greenpeace as one of its most important stakeholders and produces printed materials for the organisation. Its framework for monitoring and improving performance gathers data on water use, electricity use, emissions, general waste, specialist waste streams, and ink and substrates purchased.

All data is evaluated and performance analysed and used to develop annual improvement targets.

This was a highly competitive category, which engendered a lively debate among judges. Entries that scored highly were based on overall approach, rather than focusing on particular aspects, and where there was clear senior level buy in, engagement and promotion in organisations.

NORCA and Sistema in Norwich announce special concert to celebrate tenth anniversary

ORCA and Sistema in Norwich announce special concert to celebrate tenth anniversary. For 10 years NORCA and Sistema in Norwich has been transforming the lives of children and young people in the poorest parts of the city. It was launched at Catton Grove and Larkman Primaries in 2009 by Julian Lloyd Webber. Each year it helps up to 1,000 young people aged 7 to 18 to realise their potential and succeed across all areas of their lives through learning to play a musical instrument and being part of an orchestra.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary there will be a special concert, Carnavalia, at UEA on 11 October, performed by The Colegate Nucleo Orchestra made up of young people that have progressed through the Sistema programme.

The concert will also feature an orchestra of Sistema young musicians alongside special guest musicians under the expert guidance of Musical Director Juan Gabriel Roja. It will end with music to get people up and dancing.

The concert is at 7.30 pm on 11 October at UEA LCR. Tickets are £5, £4 and £3 and available to under 16s for just £1 and can be bought from www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk.

Local History Matters Tickets now on sale for Norwich Film Festival (6 -17th November) Following a record breaking 812 submissions from across the globe, the Norwich Film Festival has released details of the 2019 Official Selection: 100+ breathtaking short films showing across 10 days at key venues in Norwich this November.

This year there is something for everyone: from side-splitting comedy, stunning animations, family friendly moments through to thought-provoking documentary shorts. The festival shines a light on under-represented talent such as female film makers and this year includes a showcase of work from the brilliant Oska Bright Film Festival - the world’s leading festival for films made by, or featuring people with learning disabilities, autism or Asperger’s.

The 2019 festival line up also includes 11 hand-picked, full length feature films. Highlights include a screening of Hitchcock’s silent classic ‘The Lodger’ with live piano accompaniment, the Regional Premiere of Widow’s Walk; a ghostly tale filmed in Suffolk directed by Norwich School for Girls alumna Alexandra Boyd who will join the event for a Q&A, and The Fight, starring the wonderful Jessica Hynes who also hopes to put in an appearance during the screening. Aylsham, one of Norfolk’s most historic, thriving towns.

W

ith a population of ca. 6000 this very picturesque town has a lot to offer from a historical point of view – and much else besides too. The town may well date back to the 6th century. The 98-foot tower of the very fine Decorated Gothic church of St. Michael and All Angels, situated just off the central area, dominates the market place. The church dates from the 13th century and is well worth a visit. Its north transept was built under the patronage of John of Gaunt, (third son of King Edward III) in the 1380s, whose strange name is actually corrupted from the city of ‘Ghent’ (then, Flanders, now Belgium) where he was born in 1340. He died in Leicester castle in 1399.

Gaunt was lord of the manor from 1372 and Aylsham became the principal town of the Duchy of Lancaster. Its association with this dynasty brought the townsfolk many privileges including exemption from certain taxes and from jury service outside the town’s boundary. Another famous person liked with the Lancaster dynasty was Norfolk knight Sir Thomas Erpingham (1357-1428), very much a hero at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 where he led Henry Vs archers.

In bygone days the town was served by a regular coach and horses service, as the town was the main stopping off point betwixt Norwich and Cromer.

This form of transport came to an end in the 1880s when the railway reached Aylsham, and it had two train stations until the inevitable ‘Beeching’ closures in the 1950s.

Today the town has a regular connection via the 44 bus series, which visits the town every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday, (hourly on Sundays).

One of the oldest buildings in the market place is the Black Boys Inn, which probably dates back to the 1650s. It was here that the earlier post coaches used to draw up and it is said to have had stabling for forty horses – a great necessity when horses needed to be changed and rested between journeys.

The famous author Daniel Defoe stayed at this inn in 1732, as did ‘Parson’ Woodforde in 1781. The very famous landscape gardener/ designer Humphrey Repton lived nearby and is buried in St. Michael’s churchyard, where his memorial cannot be missed next to the main porch entrance.

All in all a charming, bustling town with some very interesting history with which to engage its visitors.

Gardening: Better Than Therapy

Grow Your Own released in 2007, starring the incomparable Olivia Colman and the wonderful Omid Djalili, is my favourite film about gardening.

It starts with Charlie, played by the always entertaining John Henshaw, placing his tomato seed tray on top of the television as he does every year. It continues with a successful rebellion against bigotry and prejudice as encountered in a year on a fictional allotment in the Midlands. Like many small scale British films, this one has a moving story line about a traumatised refugee, a lonely old codger, an orgy of wonderful vegetables, plenty of wit and a feel good ending.

I started volunteering with a family of Syrian refugees in April. They made the decision to apply for help to the United Nations’ Vulnerable Refugees Program in a refugee camp in Iraq. They were amongst the lucky 1% that get accepted and are part of the 20,000 refugees that David Cameron committed the country to in 2015.

When I first met them they looked shockingly “normal” but when I think about the day of their arrival now I realise how confused, tense and scared they really were. Things began to change when one of the adults was given a leftover courgette plant, a few tomato seedlings and some flowers which she began to nurture in her tiny garden. In no time she added some leeks, coriander and mint. Recently I heard that she is working an allotment, and now she is walking tall.

Sisterhood – the Healing Tour

WEA Loddon Branch – Autumn talks Plans for our Autumn talks were thrown into disarray when the chosen speaker had to withdraw. Happily, however, Mr. Michael Nash, a Royal historian and legal expert who lectures at UEA, has stepped in and is going to talk about Royal Portraits.

As usual, the talks will be on Monday afternoons in the Jubilee Hall Clubroom, from 2 till 3.30 p.m. The second talk, in a series of 10, will be on October 14th, the series will then continue uninterrupted, concluding on December 9th.

As explained in May, if you would like to come to these talks, you now have to enrol beforehand, either on line or by phone. You will need to quote the course title: “Royal Portraits” and the reference number C2226932. On line - go to WEA Eastern Region, choose ‘Find a Course’ and follow the prompts. You will have to pay the fee of £58 on line when you enrol.

If you do not like doing that, then there is the option of enrolling by phone - the number is 0300 30 33 46; and choose option 1 from the menu.. The line is open Mon. to Fri. from 8am. to 8pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm - and you actually speak to a human being! You can pay for the course over the phone if you wish but, if you prefer, you may, instead, hand a cheque to the Branch Treasurer after the first session on Sept. 30th . On line or by phone, we would urge you to enrol as soon as possible because austerity is now the watchword and under-subscribed courses may be axed.

I

n the 17th Century the infamous selfproclaimed Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins waged a personal vendetta against women in East Anglia.

Seeing Witchcraft everywhere he was determined to use whatever means necessary to convict and execute any woman he suspected. In just three years he was responsible for killing 60% of those executed for witchcraft in the UK. In Sisterhood, the new multimedia play by Jolie Booth, three women, aged 20, 40 and 60 are in a church cell, on the night before their trial for Witchcraft.

Sisterhood is a gentle but fearless adventure into the dark heart of patriarchal rule. It is split between two timelines, taking in the history of the infamous 17th century witch trials alongside modern-day concerns as women face a world in political and environmental upheaval. Using soothing and passionate storytelling, the stories of the 17th century characters interweave with episodes from the performer’s own lives, revealing an immediate and clear association. The play has been likened to The Handmaids Tale - ‘but with more hope’.

Fantastic Funding News for the Grapes Hill Community Garden!

The play undertakes a ‘Healing tour’ of East Anglia, visiting 10 of the principal locations associated with the Hopkins’ reign of terror. Booth is a local, having grown up in Braintree, Essex, and has spent the last 30 years working as a Tudor at Kentwell Hall Re-Creation in Long Melford, Suffolk.

Jolie Booth said ‘Sisterhood is a call to disarm the patriarchy through community, through the world-wide women’s web, to treat our-selves and each other with the respect, grace and honour that Mumma Earth - the divine feminine - requires. In the 16th and 17th Centuries women were set against one another in the notorious witch trials, and there are obvious parallels today.

The play performs at Norwich’s Maids head Hotel – next to the site of the Fye Bridge ducking stool – on 22 October. It can also be seen in Ipswich, Stowmarket, Manningtree, Chelmsford, Colchester, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Ely. Full details at www.kriyaarts.co.uk/#/sisterhood.

We have just heard that we will receive funding for the next three years from the National Lottery Community Fund.

We are one 1600 projects to share more than £58 million. Our new project, starting in November this year, focuses on creating an improved volunteer programme and family growing project.

The aim is to encourage and nurture volunteers from the local and refugee communities to develop their confidence, self-esteem, well-being and sense of belonging. We will provide a full range of horticultural experiences and facilitate volunteers to work towards gardening qualifications if desired. At the end of the project, we would hope that the increased volunteer participation and improved community integration would contribute to the longevity of the garden.

Our August collaboration with Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival. (see photo by Jo Rice) The garden hosted a free cycle maintenance session on the evening of Wednesday 28th August. The next day Richard Bearman led a cycle ride to Norwich Farm Share which provided residents and volunteers with an opportunity to try out their repaired bikes and gain some confidence on the road. This is part of the group’s commitment to improving air quality in Norwich and increasing mobility without negatively impacting the environment.

Moving Forwards

We must turn our thoughts away from Boris “I fought the law and the law won” Johnson and look toward the sunlit uplands of next year’s Euro 2020. Our brave lads seemed to have mastered the art of passing the ball into the path of the opposition centre forward so we can all sleep safe in that knowledge!

Meanwhile on Royal Watch it all seems very quiet, MeAgain seems to have disappeared altogether, Andrew is keeping his head down and Kate and Wills are obviously busy with the school run, bet they haven’t had to deal with the Norwich is it open is it shut road roulette! So that leaves us with the lovely Princess “The Hat” Beatrice and her charming man Edoardo “I’m not in it for the money” Mapelli Mozzi.

Clearly the happy couple are being lined up for the wedding of the Year 2020. This could be a feel good safety net in case Gareth and the lads go out in the group stages. Yes what better way of clearing the streets of Windsor for the peasants to watch a good old wedding.

Back to the roads. So the Fiveways is finished and cyclists must be rejoicing not that I’ve seen may and in sleepy Cringleford, tank traps have been installed on Keswick Road. Presumably this is to protect the Cringleford Light Horse’s rear whilst Jack Hawkins and the lads hold the strategic Eaton Crossroads thereby keeping Waitrose safely behind the lines…

Poldark has rowed off into the sunset leaving Demelza to watch Peaky Blinders on her own. Now should the balloon go up and we need another PM and as my suggestion of George Warleggan was ignored in favour of Boris this time I put forward Arthur “I’m not quite right in the head” Shelby. Who else could offer such a stable platform for the future??

Last time I looked at ‘The Power of Perspective’ and how harnessing this capability gives us the clarity to make better decisions. Now we need to breathe life into those decisions and move forwards by concentrating our energy through focus + action! Let’s say your decisions resulted in wanting to change a few things …The best place to start is by focusing on what will positively impact your life the most – in the short, medium or long-term depending on your situation. Otherwise you may end up tinkering around the edges and never move significantly forwards on any of them. At times you may also realise there are natural connections – for example by changing your job you could also achieve greater financial security or make those new friendships as you try out climbing, kite surfing or running.

Now for the action - make sure it bite-sized!

I often say it’s like eating pizza … once slice at a time …because if you try to stuff too much into your mouth at once you end up with indigestion!

‘THE FEELING’ To Headline Heveningham Hall Fireworks

R

ock band The Feeling will headline Suffolk’s most spectacular fireworks show on Saturday 2nd November at Heveningham Hall, the Grade I listed Georgian mansion near Halesworth. The event, which is held in the estate’s 6,000acre parkland, will also see Little Sister and Morganway take to the stage for a stellar line-up of live music & entertainment that goes on late into the evening.

‘Ivor Novello’ award-winning, Brit Awardnominated band The Feeling first burst onto the scene in 2006 with their debut Top 10 UK hit ‘Sewn’. The band’s debut album, Twelve Stops And Home, followed in June 2006. It was a huge success, selling 1.5 million copies worldwide (with platinum sales of over 900,000 in Britain) Along with ‘Sewn’, the album also included the bona fide hit singles ‘Fill My Little World’, ‘Never Be Lonely’ and ‘Love It When You Call’.

Accompanying airplay made them the most played act on British radio that year, receiving 97,436 spins (or 267 a day). In due course, the band won the prestigious ‘Ivor Novello’ Award for Songwriters of the Year.

The live music begins as soon as the gates open at 4.30 pm and the huge bonfire is lit, whilst the spectacular fireworks display, once again by Full Effects Fireworks, takes place between 7 pm and 8 pm.

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice - Cream (9 scoops) English Custard (Crème Anglaise) 550 ml / 1 pint of full fat milk and double cream (50/50) 4 egg yolks – medium 100 g caster sugar All Else 10 g / handful fresh garden mint or spearmint 60 g chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate 1 measure / 30 ml peppermint liquor / crème de menthe (optional) • Make the English custard (I won’t lie this is technically hard, but I know with a little know how - you can do it) • Bring the milk and cream to the boil, set aside.

• Meanwhile whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large bowl until light and throffy.

• Pour the hot milk over the egg mix and whisk together.

•

Pour back in to a clean saucepan.

• Place back on a gentle, low heat and stir constantly with a wooden spoon – until slightly thickened.

How do you know when it’s done – the custard will look silky and thicken and coat the back of the spoon rather than run straight off, the custard must never get too hot or simmer as the custard will split and look

like scrambled eggs (this can be saved by processing with a touch of cold cream or Mr Ramsey would say start again!).

• Remove from the heat, pour in to a plastic container and chill as fast as possible, preferably refrigerate over night. The custard has to be cold to make the ice cream.

• Wash the mint and process or chop until very finely chopped.

• Stir the mint, the liquor and the chips in to the English custard.

• Use the ice-cream machine as per instructions or freeze in a plastic open topped container, stirring every 30 minutes until firm – cover until needed.

• Remember to remove ice-cream from the freezer 5 – 10 minutes before needed or the ice-cream will be to hard to scoop – ice-cream is best kept at -18*c.

Tip – 1 lot of English custard can make any number of different ice-creams, experiment with strong espresso, fresh cherry’s and kirsch, marshmallows and white choc chips, lemon curd, fresh vanilla, mashed bananas or my favourite rum soaked raisins served with home-made brownies best eaten late on a Saturday night watching a good film!

Art Fair East, one of the biggest contemporary art fairs outside London, will return to Norwich this November.

As the major art fair for the Eastern Region, artists, galleries and art dealers will be part of the event which takes place between 29 November and 1 December 2019 at St Andrews Hall - in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter.

Art Fair East was founded in 2015 by leading Norfolk-based artists Will Teather and Brian Korteling, who will both be exhibiting at the event. The pair are passionate about bringing contemporary art to the area, increasing interest in the visual arts and supporting artists.

This year the fair - which has previously brought signed editions by Banksy and other famous artists to the region – offers the most international line up to date with artists from India, Mexico, Sweden and Japan exhibiting.

With around 1,000 artworks on display, a range of contemporary art will be exhibited including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video art, installation, performance and original limited-edition prints.

Join Volunteers at the Amesty Book Shop, Unthank Road What’s it like being part of the team of more than 40 volunteers who give up their time, unpaid, to work in this exciting new bookshop? Sam Margetson, who works in the shop on Wednesdays and Fridays, has been involved since the very early days. He explains what he loves about volunteering: “I love being around the books and being part of the bookshop – it’s always been a dream of mine to sell books, and it’s marvellous to raise money for such a worthwhile cause at the same time.” No shift is exactly the same, says Sam. “I enjoy serving customers, and processing the donations that come in, pricing books and putting them on the shelves. My favourite part is setting up one of our many special promotions and seeing the books fly out of the shop that’s so satisfying! Volunteers are given a lot of freedom here, so if anyone has a special interest, they can bring that passion into the role.”

When he’s not in the bookshop, Sam is working on a novel and a collection of short stories. “It’s fun to take a break from writing to come and spend time with other volunteers who love books as much as I do.”

The shop has volunteers across a wide range of ages and experience, from students to retired people. Everyone is welcome to apply – all you need is a love of books, and the desire to be involved in this new and thriving part of the Unthank Road community. Monty Shaft’s Did You Know… …that this is fast becoming a Football Column!

T

he nature of sport, particularly football, means that by the time you read this, Norwich City may have lost two or three games and be bottom of the League, but I am writing this on the day after an injuryravaged team of Canaries have beaten the current Premier League Champions, Manchester City, in an unbelievable match at Carrow Road. I was going to write a summary of the first five games, but last night really needs a column of its own.

Much has been written over the past 24 hours, but anyone who was there will never forget it. The hoo-hah around the result may be a mystery to those who don’t follow the beautiful game, but the result is one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Premier League, such that Man City’s manager, only half-jokingly, suggested it meant that they couldn’t now win the League, as they had done the previous two years. Many statistics demonstrate the gulf between the two sides, like the fact that all but one of the players in the Man City team cost more than the entire Norwich City team together, several of them ten times more. More relevant to the game, much was made in the media of the fact that Man City were missing their first choice Centre Back and had to make do with £50M English International World Cup semi-finalist John Stones, whereas far less was made of the fact that Norwich City had only one fit Centre Back and had to make do with an on loan Central Midfielder (who turned out to be Man Of The Match!)

Local Gym’s Cyclathon

sit up and take notice of us. They had said nice things about us in three of the four previous games, but we had lost three of the four games, and they had called us naïve and reckless trying to play flowing football against the big boys of the Premier League, but the manager and players vowed to keep playing the same way. Some got it – Pellegrini, West Ham manager, told Tim Krul after they’d beaten us, to keep playing the same way because they had been scared of us. Norwich play the Man City way and on Saturday evening at times they played it better than Man City. As Gary Neville pointed out, Norwich kept the ball for two minutes without a Man City player getting a touch in the lead up to the corner from which they scored the first goal. Teams just don’t do that against Man City.

You may have noticed that I keep switching between ‘us’ and ‘they’ when referring to Norwich, and that’s because that is how it is now, we are as one. Every one of us thought we would lose – you’re lying if you say you didn’t – but we sang, we cheered, we encouraged, we did everything we could to lift the team. And not just for the goals. Tackles, blocks and saves were met with cheers that may well have been louder than those for the goals. I have been going to Carrow Road for fifty years and I can’t remember ever hearing as much noise as last night. I can barely speak today, but I have a massive grin on my face, which will probably be there for several days yet.

Members and friends of Loddon Community Gym raised funds for their local gym on Sunday when 20 people took part in their Cyclathon.

Using static bikes, they rode over 140 miles over a twelve hour period raising over £900.

Gym Chairman, Richard Birbeck said “This initiative by our fundraising group is a great example of the community spirit we have at the Gym and within the locality. People recognise that we are an important local service that needs their support and income such as this helps us to survive” The not-for-profit Eastern Rivers Community Gym at Loddon is a well equipped and friendly facility open to all over 16.

Running now for over 5 years, its unique Exercise Referral Scheme also allows those referred by local doctors to improve their fitness and wellbeing under expert guidance.

Heritage Orchard launch event at Norwich High School for Girls

Musical Triangle On Wednesday 11th September, writer and journalist Richard Mabey officially opened Norwich High School for Girls’ Heritage Orchard.

Based at the school’s Dingly Dell site, the Heritage Orchard is home to 18 trees at present – all are local varieties of apple, pear, plum and cherry - the oldest dating back to the 1500s.

Over 60 guests enjoyed drinks and canapés, autumnal poetry readings and music performances from girls at Wednesday’s event, including The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Vaughan Thomas, and Sheriff of Norwich Dr Marian Prinsley.

“Already, teams of girls have been busy protecting the trees from the winter frosts in January, pruning them and watering them through the dry spells of summer.” said Headmistress Kirsty von Malaisé.

“Enrichment and outdoor learning is an integral part of an education at Norwich High School to ensure a girl’s time at the school will offer stretch, challenge and fun outside of the classroom.”

“It was a privilege to have the forefather of modern nature writers, Richard Mabey, open our ‘orchard in the city’ and wonderful to share the moment and the space with our parents and wider local community. We look forward to plenty of fruit to share in the future!”

hile over the Summer taking a break from playing and going to gigs I made my annual pilgrimage to Folk East and headed to the Norfolk World music festival. Set in the grand surroundings of Glemham hall there was a definite increase in numbers at this years Folk East but with no noticeable change to its feel of a folk festival meets fete feeling.

Having not been able to make the washed out Friday it was pleasing that Saturday and Sunday were mostly sunny. Saturdays highlights included the personal tales of his travel songs of Les Woodley, the lyrically riveting and offbeat outlook songs of Danny Whitehouse, the fluent and lively tunes of Sharon Shannon, storytelling songs of State of the Union, and upbeat high energy tunes and cheesy stage routines of Blackbeards Tea Party. Sunday brought the sonorous vocals and intriguing songs of Emily Mae Winters, off the scale energy, onstage antics and amusing play on word titles of the superb Sheelanagig, equally mixed political and humorous songs of Jez Lowe, dextrous musicianship and deft playing of Calan. Rounding things up headliner Richard Thompson played probably the best set of the weekend, delving back into his Fairport past from a superb rendition of the classic ‘who knows where the time goes’ to brilliant storytelling original solo songs including ‘1952 Vincent Black lightning’, and his 70s partnership with ex wife Linda on the poppier ‘I want to see the bright lights tonight’ forming a formidable trio of songs just before launching into an amusing

rendition of Britney’s ‘oops I did it again’ and new material emphasising that he can still pen a great song. Another great Folk East with so much to do, learn, see, hear, eat, drink, create and enjoy. Superb.The Norfolk World Music festival awoke sleepy Southburgh with its vibrant energy and the rain failed to deter us from particularly enjoying the upbeat African and Hi Life rhythms of Harare led by Marimba player extraordinaire Kuda Matimba and the Cuban and often Buena Vista inspired sounds of Son Yambu that propelled the audience to their feet in appreciation of their infectious songs. A lovely day with, like Folk East, many new things, especially dance, drum, and instrument workshops to learn. A gem of a festival in the middle of nowhere.

I did some stage managing for Head out Not home in July and August and enjoyed the solo and duo semi acoustic sets of Maz O’Connor, Billy Lubach, Ben Robertson, and the Rabbitts, the guitar, harmonium and tabla led thought provoking songs of Samia Malik, the progressive blues of The Mojo Preachers, and a great upbeat and quirky set from Gladboy who had no doubt discovered&taken inspiration from their mum and dad’s record collections. Worth seeing.

RADIO SHOW CHANGE- After 11 years of broadcasting my Acoustic and Eclectic show on Future radio I felt that the time was right for a change, and so in September I concluded the 1 hour weekly show and began broadcasting my new 2 hour Eclectic Selection show every other Sunday 6-8 pm

(Oct- 6th,20th, Nov-3rd,17th). I am covering mostly the 70s to present day but with a particular emphasis on 70s prog and jazz rock, alternative and quirky bands and artists from the late 70s to 90s, as well as world and classical music, with some folk, local and 21st century music but not perhaps as much as before.
