he 10th Norwich Pride will take place on Saturday 28th July 2018 and will be the usual colourful, family-friendly event, full of people who are proud to be themselves. Our vision has served us well over the years - to turn Norwich into a rainbow! What a party we have had and we have held onto our principles of putting on a free, inclusive and accessible event celebrating the LGBT+ Community that is for everyone. As one of the founding members, I am proud to see how Norwich Pride has grown and developed over the years. We could not do it without all of the people who have been with us on the way - thank you for attending, supporting, volunteering, organising, donating, buying your rainbow goods and parading with us since 2009. Since we held that first event we have seen same-sex marriage introduced across most of the UK. While this is welcome, we still have a lot to do to eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in schools, workplaces, on the street, everywhere. Thanks to our key partners at Norwich City Council, The Forum and Red Card Comedy as well as sponsors such as Unison the Public Sector Union and this year Aviva who are our main sponsor we are able to deliver another fabulous event.

major exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery from 23 June to 23 September 2018, organized in partnership with the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT, USA. The exhibition reunites, for the first time in three centuries, rare 17th century works of art and objects originally featured in a large (166.8 x 247.5cm), mysterious painting The Paston Treasure. Painted by an unknown Dutch school artist, circa 1663, the painting’s unique and cryptic subject continues to mesmerize and puzzle art scholars and historians. Featuring an array of exotic treasures from around the world, as well as animals and people, the painting chronicles a fraction of what was once one of the greatest private art collections of 17th century England, amassed by Norfolk’s Paston family, famed for their medieval letters. So accurately have the items been observed by the artist that experts have been able to identify the exact origin and,

Miraculously five of the original objects recorded in the painting survive including a pair of silver-gilt flagons, a Strombus shell cup, two unique nautilus cups and a mother of pearl perfume flask. These are brought together and displayed alongside musical instruments, rare timepieces, a globe, jewels, paintings and sculptures, all representative of the legendary Paston collection.
The exhibits have been loaned from distinguished national and international public and private collections and collectively they tell both a very Norfolk story and a genuinely international one. The exhibition is the result of an intensive 10-year research project to unlock the painting’s many secrets and shed light on what was once one of the most distinguished art collections in Britain in the 17th century. www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk

NUA, could you help? Our Welcome Wheels project to help refugees and asylum seekers has seen the first bikes given out. We are also launching a scheme with Social Services to provide second hand bikes to individuals or families who are trying to get their lives back on track after personal difficulty. Donations for both these projects are welcome. Then in July we are hugely excited to be hosting a ‘leaping leveret’ as part of the GoGoHares trail in Norwich. HOUSE OF HANDSOME Since opening in December 2017, House of Handsome Norwich has been a hive of activity and the year ahead set to become even busier. Set up originally as a barber shop, popularity and word of mouth has resulted in the shop now offering women’s hairdressing and styling. The shop is welcoming to all as the owner Neil Hendrey explains “I wanted to create a relaxed environment where everyone feels comfortable whether it be men, women, students, children and from the comments and feedback so far, I hope I’ve achieved this”. Forget about the stress and endless queues of the city, House of Handsome Norwich is perfectly positioned to get the best of both worlds with parking literally outside the shop and a stones throw from the city itself. And if you’re lucky, you’ll meet the shops inspiration, Frank and Fred, the handsome French Bulldogs. Whether you are looking for a clipper cut, traditional shave, colour or curls for a night out, House of Handsome Norwich is the place to go. For more information call 01603 762177, check out Instagram and Facebook at Houseofhandsomenorwich or visit the shop on 17 Gloucester Street.

Norfolk day (27 July) appearance by the county’s best loved comedy duo The Nimmo Twins and a worldfirst exhibition of paintings by John Hurt are highlights of this year’s 10th anniversary Holt Festival. They are at the heart of a wideranging and international programme that lights up the genteel north Norfolk town of Holt from 21-29 July. Seventies chart-topper Leo Sayer is coming all the way from Australia with a highy energy set feturing all his greatest hits, and Jasper Carrott’ Stand Up and Rock sees the comedian perform his new stand up show before introducing an all-star band featuring Bev Bevan of ELO and The Move. Less well known but very exciting high energy performers are London band Tankus The Henge. Internationally renowned Italian concert pianist Gloria Campaner will be performing two exclusive concerts, Norwich soprano Lisa Cassidy appears in a one off performance and there’s a concert by leading tenor James Gilchrist. Linda Marlowe, one of our finest actors, is outstanding in Berkoff’s Women, whilst Bob Kingdom brings two great characters to life in Dylan Thomas: Return Journey and The Truman Capote Talk Show. There’s plenty for families and children of all

don’t want this to turn into another Grumpy Corner, I would hate to step on Mr Anchor’s toes, but the misuse of language is something of a bugbear of mine and having touched upon it last time, I want to have a bit of a vent again. I don’t mean mistakes, we all sometimes can’t quite grasp the right word. I mean people repeatedly using the wrong word quite deliberately. It is a difficult topic, because language is always developing, new words arrive as do new things that require new words and I’m all for that, it’s a necessity, but what I object to is language, and grammar, developing due to ignorance. For example, the word

ometimes ‘literally’ now appears in the dictionary with two completely opposite meanings – the correct meaning: “without metaphor or exaggeration”, and the incorrect meaning: not seen it, but presumably “with metaphor and exaggeration”. This has come about as a result of ignorance over the correct meaning, leading to its most common usage being the incorrect meaning – yes, Jamie “he literally put the ball on a plate” Redknapp, I’m looking at you! Similarly, it has been said that because the majority of people have no idea how to correctly use an apostrophe it is likely that it will stop being used altogether – if no-one knows why it’s there, or where to put it, then it has no purpose! The word that really grinds my gears, though is ‘lush’. Lush is a wonderful word, meaning “abundant, luxuriant, verdant”. It can be used to describe meadows, trees, hair. It cannot, however, be used to describe your honey-glazed sautéed chicken with dauphinoise potatoes! Where did this come from? When did it start? I blame Tom Kerridge. He was the first person I heard misusing the word. Or was it Gavin and Stacey? Is it a Welsh/West Country thing? I don’t know, but it’s wrong, wrong, WRONG! I’m assuming it’s short for luscious, but how many people using it, know that? I’m guessing not many. It seems now to just be used to mean anything that’s considered to be good. I heard someone the other day say that Centre Parcs was ‘really lush’. Now, this time of year, it may well be - the trees, grass and other vegetation probably were lush - but that’s not what they meant. Stop it! Just stop it. Please. Just for me.

Use as a side dish to Mexican, South American, Cajun, Creole or TexMex food like Spicy Chilli. 425 ml / 3/4 pint any milk 30g / 1oz butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar any 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 90g / 3oz polenta or cornmeal 3 eggs – medium - beaten 1 tin / approx. 340g / 12oz sweetcorn – drained and washed 1 & 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • Bring the milk to the boil with the butter, salt, sugar, chilli and paprika. • Take of the heat and whisk in the cornmeal, this will thicken. • Meanwhile mash, whizz or squash half of the corn for some consistency (I usually pulse with a stick blender). • Then beat in the eggs, sweetcorn mix and baking powder. • Pour in to a well-greased oven proof dish (3 pints). • Bake in a preheated oven gas 6 / 200*c / 400*f – for 30 minutes or until set. Tip – Test as you would a cake by pushing a skewer through the middle and if it comes out clean it is cooked By ZENA LEECH-CALTON © For my recipes, blogs & cookery courses including Mexican go to www.lovenorwichfood.co.uk

ABOUT THE PLAY “We are such stuff as dreams are made on” 12 years ago, Prospero, Duke of Milan, usurped and exiled by his brother washes up on a distant and mystical island with his baby daughter, Miranda. A place where his magical powers reign supreme and the only inhabitants of the island, the sprite Ariel and brutish Caliban, answer his every command. In this strange new kingdom, he is left to brood. Now his enemies, his brother Antonio, who supplanted him as Duke, and Alonso, King of Naples, whilst sailing home are blown, by fortune, off course towards him.

Prospero raises a tempestuous storm that shipwrecks them. Scattered across the island the boat’s passengers are tested and tormented as they are magically drawn towards their fate. Left to plot his revenge for years Prospero finally has the chance to exact it. But will he? This play of soaring poetry, high comedy and tender love, Shakespeare’s late, great gem, examines the power of true love, our capacity for vengeance and what it takes to forgive. Come and spend a glorious summer evening watching this enchanting, fastpaced production of one of Shakespeare’s finest plays. Performed in the open air, by an all male cast with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance.
Norwich-based artisan bakery, Bread Source, are delighted to announce a new series of day baking classes led by award-winning baker and author Emmanuel Hadjiandreou. Beginning on 3rd June, the first series of classes will be introducing the art of baking sourdough bread and take place twice a month. Emmanuel says of the course: “Many people are turning their backs on massproduced, homogenized and bland bread in favour of something natural and nourishing. And what can be more natural than the way break used to be made – with flour, water and care. “It’s no surprise that when people take in the wonderful aroma of their first homemade sourdough loaf, they never look back.” The baking classes cost £120 and take place from 10am – 5pm at the Bread Source bakery and cafe on Upper St Giles, Norwich. The day includes welcome drinks and pastries on arrival, a delicious home cooked lunch, recipes, tips and advice and lots of goodies to take home at the end of the day including Bread Source’s sourdough culture. For more information or to book, pop into Bread Source, Upper St Giles, Norwich or call 01603 611526.

Local History Matt For a long time I thought that the best way of responding to any life challenge was to analyse the situation logically before taking action. Sometimes this strategy worked well, however too often the more I kept pursuing this approach the worse things got. This continued until I had a significant ‘light-bulb’ moment in which I realised I needed to put much greater emphasis on satisfying my deeper emotional needs. That insight led me to consider the benefits of hypnotherapy. And once I had moved beyond my unfounded fears a whole new world opened up for me. Having walked through a door that I had ignored for many years, I felt drawn to helping others experience life differently and I chose to become a qualified hypnotherapist. Since then I have been guiding clients, both young and not so young, on how to harness the power of their emotions and their imagination. It would be my pleasure to work with you in the same way. S
himpling St. George (Post Code: IP21 4UF) is set back from the main village road but, even so, beckons visitors by its tranquil setting and exterior beauty. A squeaky gate bearing St. George himself gains you admission into the churchyard, from where, on your left, you will see the building’s 13th century origins declared by distinctive ‘Y’-shaped carved tracery in the window frames. As you enter the church its ‘peppery’ atmosphere may well give you a sense of its age, plus its trapped ‘time capsule’ appearance. Has anything happened in here during the past century? Well of course, in its heyday it served its faithful worshippers like any other church in the county. However, there is a feeling of mysterious melancholy within its walls. Immediately before you on entry is the 15th century ‘Lion’ font. Norfolk can boast of having some of the most remarkable of these structures – but this one looks sadly past its undoubted noble original best. Turning to face down the nave towards the altar you can only be impressed by the grandeur of the amazing arch-braced roof structure that dates from the late 14th century. Just below the mass of timbers overhead note the small projections (‘corbels) that actually support the weight of the roof, for all bar one were purposely

south Norfolk, osphere of time-locked history disfigured ca. 1643/44 during the zealous purges of the Cromwellian era, when saintly images were considered superstitious and offensive – even if they held the roof up! William Dowsing, a Suffolk farmer turned soldier, was charged by Parliament to ensure that bands of Puritan wreckers visited churches to saw and hack away banned religious images. As far as the ‘corbels’ are concerned the one that was missed is opposite the main entry door lurking in a dark corner up to the right. The despoilers did yet more damage in this church by sawing off items from the ends of the pews and, whilst they had the ladders up, they set to work scratching out the faces of all the angels in the windows. At the conclusion of their heinous acts the roaming despots often had the gall to demand payment from the local church. Occasionally the parishioners and Rector were pressed to do the gruesome work themselves. So, you may have mixed emotions viewing this wounded interior. However, you may well feel that the building has yet triumphed – for it has survived, when those who harmed it have not. For all that sadness I still think that this holy place has a rather beguiling allure. See what you think.

Yoga has helped me so much in every aspect of my life and it can help you too. I have been practicing approaching 20 years now and have over 12 years teaching experience. I share a gentle flowing style of Yoga that is suitable for all levels. I offer different variations to poses so beginners are very welcome, those that have an established practice are encouraged to experience the more advanced variations. Posture work is adapted to each individual. The class format is similar although the content differs each week with some overlapping postures. We begin each session with mindfulness (tuning in and observing your body and breath) and Pranayama (breathing). Postures flow from one to the other, some with longer holds using the breath to guide you on your journey. Each session is 90 minutes so we have the time to luxuriate in a relaxation at the end. Something that I find is so beneficial , so healing for the body and mind especially in the current busy media driven life so many of us live. Yoga balances the body and the mind. o with the sad news that Ray Wilson a World Cup hero from 1966 has left us we must turn to this year’s tournament. Gareth “Penalty Shootout” Southgate has like all previous England managers not given Jack Hawkins and Richard Todd the call-up something he may regret against Belgium. Still at the moment we can look forward to a tournament without Wayne “mine’s a pint “ Rooney and Jack “I’ll just see if I can stand” Wilshere! An opening game against Tunisia what could possibly go wrong? Of course Norwich have ended the season with nothing and seen the tearful departure of the Irish Messi, Wes Hoolahan. A rare breed in that he stayed with one club for more than two years. It was like that in my day just look at Billy Wright at Wolves, Stanley Matthews at Blackpool. The same applied to managers Revie, Shankly, Catterick, Busby and Nicholson whereas now you can spend six months saving a club from relegation and still get the push ask Allardyce at Everton and Moyse at West Ham. It was never like this with Subbeteo!! As I write we are hours away from a London weekend which could decide the future of several people. Conte, will he get the chop even if Chelsea lift the FA Cup? Will Meghan “job done” Markle throw her wedding bouquet to Beatrix (fielding at silly point)? Talking of panto characters is Camilla (hair apparent) going…. Oh no she isn’t …. Oh yes she is! Staying with the von Windsors, another royal babe has arrived and with a nod to Brexit and Entente Cordiale he has been given a French name. It must have been all those nights in watching the Versailles box set. We await the name of auntie Pippa’s baby with trepidation could the nod to Europe go as far as Adolf? Well after all her big sister has married into a German gang! Poor William looked tired on ANZAC day so valets, servants pay attention and buck up!! Meanwhile he’s apparently coming in July Get the fallout shelters ready!
I have three chickens which I keep on my allotment. They are known as Leggy, Ms Aubergine and the Sussex. During the summer months they live, picturesquely and romantically, on the fruit plot in the shade of apple trees and currant bushes, where the best places for dust baths are at the base of fruit trees, which, gardening books will tell you, need to be weed free. But it’s what they get up to in winter, when they have the freedom of the whole plot, that is particularly adorable. When the soil is dormant they act, in effect, as a pesticide, efficiently unearthing and wiping out colonies of slugs, snails and other insects I don’t want. They drop little fertiliser bombs and keep the plot relatively clear, so that I can keep on top of weeds without having to resort to lots of digging. That’s good for the soil as well as my back. They sift and aerate the compost heap and when allowed to, spread compost evenly around my plot, before turning it in and fine-tilthing the soil. All of this, of course, is good for the crops. On top of all that my chickens show me that they love me, even if they do occasionally mistake my toes for worms (their beaks are surprisingly warm and soft). They make up for it by talking to me when I’m gardening in their company and laying beautiful eggs that make me laugh. Chickens are an essential well-being tool!

ome of the best contemporary circus shows from around the world are coming to Norwich in in July. The Chapelfield Summer Circus big top in Chapelfield Gardens will feature shows from leading international companies, all appearing in the city for the first time, to celebrate 250 years of circus. Australian company Casus bring their breakthrough show Knee Deep. Now in its 7th wildly successful year, it explores the boundaries of strength and fragility as bodies are pushed and pulled, eggs are weighed and tested and acts of intimacy share space with thrilling physical feats. Fauna is a multi-award winning show described by London’s Evening Standard as ‘like David Attenborough in tights and leotards’. The performers balance, tumble, jump and fly as they transform their bodies into spiders, lemurs, tree frogs and birds of paradise to illustrate the similarities between human movement and animal behaviour.

This loud and funny dramatisation of the domestic adventures of a chaotic family, inspired by Roald Dahl’s The Twits, has thrills, gasps, laughs and drama aplenty for both adults and children to enjoy.
On the evening of Friday 6 July a herd of life size elephant puppets will parade from Goal Hill through to Chapelfield Gardens. The parade recreates the practice of years gone by when visiting circus companies would parade their animals and performers through the streets to announce their arrival.
Circus Cabaret Lates will feature spectacular line-ups compered by international star Abigail Collins who has has appeared in late-night cabaret sensation La Clique. Over the weekend a programme of daytime outdoor circus fun will include drop-in workshops and circus skills instruction for all ages. Passing Your Pension to Your Heirs
O
ne of the big changes in recent years to pension rules is the way that unspent pension savings can be passed down to your heirs. Phil Beck looks at what the rules say. It’s interesting that many people are still unaware that in many cases their pension savings can be passed on after their death. The first two factors to consider are whether the pension holder is under the age of 75 on death and whether or not the pension fund has been “crystallised” – ie whether pension benefits have started to be taken. If death occurs before age 75 and the pension holder has not crystallised the fund, then any benefits passed on to heirs are free of tax. If it happens after age 75, then the inherited benefits are taxed at the recipient’s normal rate of tax for their income level. In both cases, benefits can be passed on as a lump sum, a drawdown pension or an annuity.
If the pension holder has started taking benefits in the form of a drawdown arrangement, the treatment is similar in that benefits paid on a death before age 75 are free of tax and benefits paid on a death after age 75 are taxed at the recipient’s normal rate. If you have an annuity in payment, it may be worth checking the terms so you understand how the contract deals with spouses and/or dependants. A big change introduced in April 2015 was the ability to pass benefits on to any beneficiary rather than just a spouse or dependant. However, it is important that anyone you wish to benefit is specified using a pension benefits nomination form. Whilst a nomination form is not binding, it will give the scheme administrator the necessary guidance. Your nominated beneficiary has the option to take the benefits in the form of an income (such as a drawdown pension) or as a lump sum.
It’s worth noting that if the benefits are taken as a drawdown pension, the person inheriting the benefits can then, in turn, pass them on again to his or her nominated beneficiaries on death if there is still unspent money in the pot. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change. For independent advice about your financial planning, contact Phil on 01603 706740 or email phil.beck@ almarygreen.com. Richard Penguin’s
Musical Triangle Another very enjoyable weekend was had at this years Folk on the Pier running my Tea Time event on the fringe festival at the social club in Cromer (thanks to everyone who played or attended and to the club) and at the main festival. Sadly I missed the Friday afternoon concert on the pier and some sets but my 6 highlights were a bold brass laden set from Home Service on Friday night, the dance driven folk tunes of Morris on Saturday afternoon, the mix of fiery instrumentals and trad songs from Urban Folk Theory, and marvellous melding of folk and reggae from Edward 11, the lyrical, thought provoking and amusing songs of Gerry Colvin band on Sunday afternoon, and a relaxed, and slightly nostalgic set from Fairport Convention to conclude the festival in the evening. Just before this Karen Tweed played a superb concert upstairs at Carberry’s café in Norwich displaying her nimble fingered approach to playing the piano accordion and highlighting on tunes from Orkney to Ireland, France to Sweden why she is still one of the most highly regarded, original and sought after players in folk. Just across the road at the King of Hearts, but a few weeks earlier Alden, Patterson and Dashwood (APD) launched their superb second album ‘By The Night’ the follow up to their ground-breaking debut album ‘Call Me Home’ that was voted Froots editors album of the year 2016. A languid approach, yet tight knit trio Christina’s voice floats beautifully above the fluent fiddle playing of Alex and deft dobro work of Noel with her own subtle guitar playing

underpinning it all. There are stories aplenty on the new songs with books inspiring the albums dream like title track and ‘The Time Song’ and the curious actions of a fish on ‘Kingfish’. Their harmonies were as equally resplendent on the new tunes as they were on ‘Moon Song’ and ‘Mole in the Ground’ lovely reminders from that classic debut aired again on the night. A trio who are deservedly going way beyond our fine city. Friday nights at Jurnets are still going strong and a recent night saw Anto Morra mixing personal, and poetic songs with political, while young up and coming duo Red Dear seemingly take inspiration from late 60s psychedelic folk and The Cocteau Twins to create a cavernous, eerie, and dreamlike sound unlike many others. One’s to watch for, they also played a great set at my Tea Time event. In a very different vein The Bloodshake Chorus dressed like Zombie Butchers at the Brickmakers and re-interpreted rather than covered many classic songs from the 50s and 60s giving ‘These Boots Were made for walking’ and ‘Delilah’ an even more sinister edge, and encouraging audience sing-alongs on the likes of ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon’ and ‘House of the Rising sun’.
